The kids are not sitting in their old classrooms as the new room is warmer and cozier from inside. The kids got inspired when seeing a motivated team effort, especially seeing the females work shoulder to shoulder with the male participants. It opened up their mindset and the typical notion that women can’t progress in life. Water filtration tank is a live demonstration of what they study.
Ghuggu Kham’s new signage has become an attraction point for all. Tourists get attracted to the interactive signage which has in return generated income for all the shops around in the chowk. The energy and the enthusiasm created in the process of making the school block and activating the chowk has made the locals respect and love their native land even more. The youths of the village are very motivated.

Our angawadi has got a new look and the kids love it. I am very happy to see that the building uses mud kulhads made by our local potters and doors are weaved by local craftsmen. A lot of smaller elements are added which are educative and innovative for the kids. Utlising the village waste and scrap materials to make the play area highlights the fact that we are awarded as the cleanest village of Gujarat.

The transformation of the angawadi Kendra from a dumpyard to what it is now, is phenomenal. In Haridwar, cleanliness is one of the biggest issues and this project has played a major role in changing people’s mindset about hygiene and cleanliness. Best part is that the extension to the anganwadi is conceptualised as a multipurpose space- Spandan Kendra, library and play area for the kids.

The space created has set an example for the villagers to adopt bamboo as a construction material to build their own houses as valsadi teak is becoming more and more scarce. The pavilion is a good space for the kids to learn and create craft. It is also one of the coziest spaces to hold our meetings and discussions. The tunnel is a new fun element for the kids to play over it, under it or through it.

EXISTING CONDITION OF SCHOOLS There are numerous problems with government schools across Uttarakhand like ● The buildings are not climate responsive hence they lack natural light and ventilation. ● In the mountains there is sufficient outdoor space for recreational activities but they are not developed well. ● Poor construction quality of the structure leading to water leakages, breakage of the slab etc. This compromises with the learning environment for the children. ● Maintenance of the building and the infrastructure within is lacking. ● Lack of water supply ● Lack of hygiene
All these problems eventually lead to decrease in number of kids coming to government schools. Hence an urgent change in the infrastructure facilities of our major grassroot education engine is needed.
WHAT WE PROPOSE IN AN EXISTING SCHOOL Schools are the first step towards education and hence is an essential space to generate interest and innovation in children. ● ● ● ● ● ●

The school should house a series of experiences and learning aids exclusively designed for children. The space designed will blur the boundaries between inside and outside because outdoor learning is equally important for a child’s growth. Each surface and material is used as a learning aid which makes it fun for the kids to interact with. Natural light and ventilation are very important in defining a space and facilitate a learning environment. The design has to be climate responsive to face the extreme climates of the mountains. Various spatial experiences combined with multiple sustainable features like organic vegetable farming, water harvesting, solar energy, solar cookers, gobar gas plant etc will create an ideal learning environment for the kids. An interactive installation will add a modern touch to a kid’s learning .
