Use caution when hiring a home improvement contractor. Scams abound, especially following a major storm, flood, or other weather event when many homeowners are trying to repair their houses. But contractor scams can happen any time, so be wary of highpressure sales tactics, up front fees, and fly-by-night businesses. Con artists will take homeowners’ money and deliver slipshod work… or no work at all. How the Scam Works Home improvement scams can start with a knock on the door, a flyer, or an ad. The contractor may offer a low price or a short timeframe. One common hook is when the scammer claims to be working in your neighborhood on another project and has leftover supplies. Once started, a rogue contractor may “find” issues that significantly raise the price. If you object, they threaten to walk away and leave a half-finished project. Or they may accept your upfront deposit and then never return to do the job. Following a natural disaster, scammers persuade homeowners to sign over their insurance payment.

Tips to Spot this Scam Watch out for “red flags.” Say no to cash-only deals, high-pressure sales tactics, high upfront payments, handshake deals without a contract, and on-site inspections. Not all “storm chasers” are con artists, but enough are that you should be cautious any time a home contractor contacts you first…especially after a natural disaster. Ask for references and check them out. Bad contractors will be reluctant to share this information and scammers won’t wait for you to do your homework. Check them out at bbb.org to see what other customers have experienced. And always be sure to get a written contract with the price, materials and timeline. The more detail, the better. Know the law. Work with local businesses that have proper identification, licensing and insurance. Confirm that your vendor will get related permits and make sure you know who is responsible for what according to your local laws and that your vendor is ready to comply.

1. Gaze across the Ouimet Canyon. A short drive from Thunder Bay in Pass Lake is a canyon with knife-edge cliffs looming over a ravine. It’s the perfect backdrop for one of Canada’s longest and fastest ziplines. 2. Scale the Via Ferrata du Diable. Via Ferrata du Diable soars above Quebec’s largest national park and features epic views and pristine wilderness. Supervised by a guide and hooked up to a secure climbing route, make your way along a sheer cliff above a 650-foot drop. 3. Cycle along a wine route. In British Columbia, the Okanagan Valley’s fragrant countryside is home to over two hundred vineyards. 4. Try to spot Canada’s national animal. The beaver can be very difficult to see unless you are at the wooded Beaver Boardwalk in Hinton, Alberta. There you can stroll around an active beaver dam and hang out on the observation tower over the beaver lodge to get a glimpse of our nickel’s focal point. 5. Arm a cannon. In Halifax the star-shaped Citadel was built by British forces in 1856 and offers fantastic views of the city. You can tour the barracks, watch firing practice, help arm a cannon or sign up to be a soldier for a day.

6. Embrace Indigenous history. One of Canada’s sunniest cities, Saskatoon is the perfect place to discover six thousand years of First Nation history at the fascinating Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a national historic site. Beyond the exhibits and artifacts, the 600-acre grounds have various trails and a medicine wheel as old as Stonehenge. 7. Stand beneath a polar bear. Get up-close and personal with a polar bear at the Polar Bear Conservation Centre inside Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg. TIPS TO SURVIVE A HEAT WAVE (NC) Most of us enjoy everything our short summers have to offer. But a heat wave can make even the biggest warm-weather enthusiasts long for winter. Stay cool and comfortable with these tips from Health Canada. Understand heat illnesses. Hot temperatures can be dangerous and lead to heat illnesses such as

You’re at a greater risk for heat illness if you have certain health issues, including breathing difficulties, heart problems, a mental illness such as depression or dementia, or take certain medications. If you are taking medication or have a health condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it increases your risk in the heat and follow their recommendations.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 or your local emergency number immediately if you are caring for someone who has a high body temperature and is either unconscious or confused or who has stopped sweating.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool liquids, especially water, before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Remind yourself to drink water by leaving a glass by the sink and eat more fruits and veg30

Rest and recover. If your home is extremely hot, take a break by spending a few hours in a cool place, like a tree-shaded area, a swimming facility or an airconditioned public place. Take cool showers or baths until you feel refreshed. Use a fan to help you stay cool and aim the air flow in your direction.
