Don’t hibernate: 5 tips to stay active in cold weather

(NC) Sometimes all you feel like doing in winter is curling up with a cozy blanket on the couch. But there are many health benefits to being active, including fighting the seasonal blues and getting better sleep. Here are some tips to help you start and keep moving: 1. Shift your schedule. Having turned back our clocks, we get much more light in the morning and little if any once we get home from work. If you find it difficult to get motivated once it’s dark, switch up your routine and schedule morning workouts instead of evening ones.

Sign up for a new class. Nothing breaks you out of the winter doldrums like learning something new. Try a

hybrid fitness class, like Aqua Zumba or Yoga HIIT (high-intensity interval training). As an added benefit, a class is a financial and personal commitment, meaning you’ll be more likely to follow through even when you don’t feel like going.

Try active TV watching. If you’re stuck indoors because of a snowstorm or really don’t want to miss your favourite show, incorporate some movement during commercials or slower parts of the program. You can do jumping jacks, skip or jog or skip on the spot for some cardio, and squats, push-ups or burpees for strength training.

4. Get creative indoors. If you’re limited

in how much time you can spend outside, try finding new, exciting ways to become active indoors. Visit your local library for free workout DVDs, walk around exploring art and culture at a museum or check out a local indoor market or festival.

5. Reward yourself. At least half the battle is motivation, and if you set little rewards for yourself when you meet your goals, you’ll be more likely to succeed. Treat yourself to a movie or that deluxe workout gear you’ve been craving. Or try a day at one of many Westin spas in Canada, with therapeutic massages, cleansing facials and invigorating body treatments that revive your senses.

Just like any other type of contractor or home improvement project, it is imperative the professional you hired is reliable and qualified for the job. Watch out for plumbing companies that use high pressure sales tactics, or do not give you enough time to thinkthrough your options. This could be a red flag for a scam.

Check warranties. Make sure you check the warranties for both your products and your plumber’s labour; they may not be for the same period. Your plumber should comply with manufacturers’ specifications so warranties remain valid, but may have to do something that void a warranty in an emergency.

The following are some BBB tips to consider when choosing a plumber or plumbing contractor to hire.

Read your estimate and contract carefully. There are many variables in pricing for a plumber. Check if the estimate is a flat rate including materials or if materials will be charged separately. Will the work being done by a full-time employee or contracted worker? Also ask about equipment fees and see if there are extra costs for equipment, truck or trip costs. Ask if the plumber will use drop sheets or service mats during work, and if the cost of cleanup is included in the estimate.

Begin your research at bbb.org/sask. Read customer reviews; check the business rating and possible warnings; note how long the business has been in operation. Ask your family and friends for recommendations. Ask the plumber for references for similar jobs done in the past.

Look at credentials. A plumber hired to do any type of work or repair should be licensed and insured. Plumbers in Saskatchewan need certification by The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship & Trade Certification Commission. Also ask if they are COR* safety certified by the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association. Can they produce a Letter of Good Standing stating they have an up-to-date and paid WCB account?

Consider membership in professional organizations. Look for professionals who are members of organizations like Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating and Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada.
