Tips to make fall gatherings a breeze (NC) With a quick shift in weather and jam-packed schedules, autumn can go by in the blink of an eye. Here are some tips to get ahead to make sure you enjoy every moment with friends and family: 1. Prep freezer meals. Cooler temperatures call for warm, comforting meals, which are easy to get ready. On Sundays, pull out the slow cooker or make a low and slow soup with seasonal ingredients. Make a few extra servings to freeze for busy weeknights, out of town company or send with kids heading away to school. 2. Take your car for a check-up. Many of us will be hitting the roads this season, and whether it’s a short carpool to school or a long trip to grandma’s for a family feast, conditions can change quickly. It’s important to ensure everything in your car is running smoothly. While you’re at it, review your insurance policy to make sure you’re covered for the unexpected. It’s important to get a policy that’s right for your coverage needs – and wallet. Connect with an experienced broker like the ones at PC Insurance for some serious peace of mind. 3. Set priorities. You may not be able to do it all, and that’s okay. On a regular basis, sit down with the family to determine the most important commitments and politely decline the things that may get in the way of enjoying the events you’re anticipating the most. This will allow you to dedicate time and attention where you want so you can fully enjoy and connect with loved ones.

Renovating your basement on a budget (NC) Renovating your basement doesn’t have to break the bank. Here, homebuilding expert Mike Holmes Jr. and the Electrical Safety Authority share tips to spruce up your basement on a budget and ensure the job is done safely. Maximize your space. No matter the size of your basement, you want to make the most of your square footage. Basements can be dark, but you can make your space appear brighter and bigger by incorporating lighting at varying levels. To do this, consider the use of pot lights, your needs for task lighting, and where to place table and floor lamps or dimming switches. Before you get started with brightening up your space, consult with a Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC) to create an electrical plan to make sure your new vision will work and meet code requirements. Build from the outside in. If you’re planning on investing money to upgrade your basement, make sure it’s protected from outside threats before starting work. To prevent or deter flooding, check your for signs of moisture and be sure to seal all access points where water could seep
in and cause damage. If your basement has ever flooded, consider ground fault circuit interrupters, which can help prevent a dangerous electrical situation. The right person for the job. Whether you choose to use a contractor for your basement renovation or complete the project yourself, always ensure all electrical work is performed by an LEC. Hiring one will guarantee work is done safely and legally. In Ontario, only an LEC can

BBB CONSUMER TIPS: AUTO REPAIR AND SERVICE Every vehicle needs some kind of repair, eventually. Finding a mechanic or auto body shop you can trust is important for your confidence, safety, and getting your automotive darling back on the road in peak condition! PLAN AHEAD! Don’t wait until you have an accident or your car stops running to begin the search. In these situations, you will be stressed and may make snap decisions based on speed and convenience. Be aware that there are many auto repair and mechanic shops out there, and not all operate with trust and integrity. Do your research ahead of time and make an educated decision on who is best to look under the hood. And for the self-proclaimed auto expert, don’t self-diagnose. You may have received some great pointers from your parents or school buddy, but self-diagnosing problems can lead to unnecessary costs if you ask for specific work that doesn’t actually fix the issue. Give the technician as much detail about the vehicle’s problem as possible, but let them diagnose and make work recommendations. BBB tips: Start your research at bbb.org. Check to see if a business is accredited
and in good standing. Read customer reviews and complaints. Ask your network for recommendations. Look for certifications like an Automotive Service Excellence Seal (ASE) that show the operation maintains regular training and achieves passing grades for its technicians. Follow up with problems. If you continue to have problems after the initial work was completed, take it back to the shop that performed the repair. If you continue to have issues, you may wish to file a complaint at bbb.org/ sask. If your issues involve the warranty for the vehicle (if it is a recent model), it may qualify for the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP). Be a smart consumer. One way to protect yourself against disreputable repair shops and scams is to practice “consumer automotive strategy.” If you do not know much about vehicles, do not make your lack of knowledge obvious to the mechanic. Watch your car, if possible. Be aware of common repair shop scams (such as loosening spark plug wire connections). There are many things disreputable mechanics can do to make a car appear to have more problems than it actually does. Keep these tips in mind, and you and your vehicle can enjoy many more long drives together!
