CLEANING YOUR AIR DUCTS Don’t fall for air duct salespeople telling you your system needs regular cleaning and mold control. Doing so could result in you paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a service that is not really necessary. Every home is different, so it really is up to the homeowner to determine if their air ducts need cleaning, but most maintenance can be done with a regular household vacuum, or shop vac for bigger particles or buildup. But sometimes professional servicing is needed. Look for these signs that your air ducts could use a deep clean: • Visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other parts of your heating and cooling system (especially if there has been water damage in the home) • Ducts infested with vermin • Ducts clogged with large amounts of dust and debris (i.e., in newly constructed homes or after a major renovation) • Particles entering your home from your supply registers What to look for in an air duct service contractor There are no duct cleaning standards to certify, endorse or approve air duct cleaning companies. But asking the contractor if they are members of a trade association or have knowledge certification by National Air Duct Cleaning Association (which educates on the entirety of the HVAC system) could help you make a decision about who
to hire. Do not let a contractor insist you need a chemical treatment for mold unless the company can show you proof of mold or other contamination. Something might look like mold, but only an expert will know for sure and may need lab tests to do so. Be wary of any company proposing the use of disinfectants or biocide. Under Canada’s Pest Control Products Act, no such products have been approved for use in the home and broadcast spraying is unacceptable. Ask the contractor if they have cleaned a system like yours before you sign a service contract, and ask to be presented with references that you can investigate. Avoid “blow-and-go” companies who charge a low fee and then do a poor job. This can be worse than a full cleaning because it can kick up particles or damage your system. The contractor should perform a visual inspection after the cleaning is complete. This can be done by using access panels in the duct work or using a flexible cable camera. Find an air duct cleaner you can TRUST by searching bbb.org/sask. See their current rating, if they have the appropriate licensing, read any customer reviews, and know if they have had any unresolved complaints in the past.
Since 1981, we have been providing top quality products and expert installation for Regina & District. We strive to provide impeccable service at the lowest possible price.

Fall home fixes: What to DIY and what to leave to the pros (NC) When it comes to improving your home, it can feel like a “pay now or pay later” gamble. For some of the more straightforward tasks, we’ve all been tempted to roll up our sleeves rather than source a professional whose hourly rates can start before they even walk through the door. That said, there’s a reason certain experts are in high demand – they help ensure your home is safe and secure. Here’s what to tackle now and what to leave for a pro:
little elbow grease can go a long way for your pocketbook when it comes to this dirty job. Make sure you always follow all ladder safety rules and have a spotter while you’re up there. 4. Repairing drywall: A hole, whether from a nail or an accidental bump, can typically be repaired with putty and a spackle knife. A patch kit may be needed for larger holes, but using one makes for a simple repair. Just remember to make sure you have some touchup paint to match your wall.
Do-it-yourself:
Leave it to a pro:
1. Running toilets: Hearing your toilet run nonstop is frustrating, especially when you think about what it’s doing to your water bill. In many cases, this is simply a case of adjusting the float or draining your toilet tank to replace the seal, a simple at-home fix with minimal expense at a hardware store. 2. Exposed leaky pipes: Similarly, a leaking pipe under your sink could be as easy as tightening a nut or coupling with simple clamps. However, if you suspect a leaking pipe in a wall, it’s probably time to call a plumber. 3. Clearing the eaves: As long as you’re comfortable on a ladder, a

1. Fixing windows: Whether it’s a breeze coming in or a sticking window, it may be hard for an untrained eye to determine the source of a window issue. Secure windows keep your home warm and dry when the temperature drops and can keep your heating bill in in check, so calling in a pro may be a wise investment. 2. Updating your insurance policy: If you’ve made changes to your home recently, it may be time to revisit your policy. Insurance brokers can help by shopping around for the right coverage and price. If you’re not sure where to start, the online form at pcinsurance.ca gets you the details needed for a broker to shop around for you.

Seasonal décor tips for a spooky but chic home (NC) From costumes and candy to jack-o-lanterns and scary flicks, Halloween has something exciting around every corner—and it isn’t your tired decorations from 1980. This year make sure your trick-or-treaters are greeted on a doorstep that’s more spooky than sad with these fresh and fun Halloween décor ideas. Gore—but make it glam. Skulls can still be spooky if you give them a little makeover. Refresh those old skeletons with a DIY costume jewelry addition, or shop around for your new favourite glammed-out accent piece. Pearls, diamonds, gold mask; the options are endless for bejeweled skulls. Pretty and prim pumpkins. This year is all about painted, not carved, pumpkins — adding a splash of fabulous fun. Play with metallics, pastels or the traditional Halloween colours like black and orange but add some sparkle into the mix for an extra pretty pattern. The pumpkin is your blank canvas, have some fun. Light it up—non-jack-o-lantern style. With the cooling weather, candles, fires and lights are always in style. This year add a little twist to those traditional fall lighting staples by opting for black candles for your dining room table, wired lights in glass pumpkins or jars, or super-spooky fire log skulls. Tarot cards and palmistry. Palmistry and tarot cards are all the rage, and for this season finding exciting ways to incorporate them into your fall décor is a must. Try adding palmistry paintings, tarot card coasters or even books to your coffee table for a divine new look.
