Hitting the reset button on your family’s privacy practices (NC) The end of an old year and the dawn of a new one is an opportunity to hit the reset button and to adopt good habits that will help protect your family’s personal information throughout the year. The online world offers convenience, but also carries risks for privacy. Organizations have a responsibility to protect your personal information, but there are also steps you and your family can take. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada encourages Canadians to learn about the apps and services your children are using, encourage them to limit the information they share with others, and take a closer look at

the privacy settings on your family’s accounts and devices. A good way to start is by talking with your kids. It’s important to know about the places your kids visit on the Internet and the devices they use to go online, to help you understand the nature of personal information they may be sharing. To this end, dive in. Try out the family web cam if you have one, play the online games they love, create a profile on the social networking sites they frequent, for example. Most sites have extensive privacy options that children should learn to use. For each site where your kids are posting information about themselves, their family and their friends, sit
down with them and review that site’s privacy policy. Then modify the privacy settings of their account together and have them consider how the information they are posting could be used – or misused – by others. Finally, your kids should understand that once they post content online, they no longer have control over it. It can be forwarded, copied and pasted, manipulated, printed out or saved – it can remain online, in some form, potentially forever. They should know that deleting information doesn’t mean that it’s gone forever. Find more privacy tips for parents at youthprivacy.ca

COMPUTER TROUBLE? BEWARE OF SCAMS.
In this con, scammers pose as tech support employees of well-known computer companies and hassle victims into paying for their “support.” A tech support rep calls you at home and offers to fix a computer bug that you haven’t even noticed, or a popup warning appears on your screen instructing you to dial a number for help. In this con, scammers pose as tech support employees of well-known computer companies and hassle victims into paying for their “support.” How the Scam Works You get a telephone call or a popup on your computer screen from someone claiming to be with tech support from a well-known software company. Microsoft is a popular choice. Often the scammer will create a sense of urgency—the computer is sending error messages, they’ve detected a virus, or your computer is about to crash and you’ll lose all your data! You are told only a tech support employee can fix the problem, and you’re asked to allow access to your machine. Once access is granted, the caller will often run a “scan” and claim your computer is infected with viruses. The scammer then offers various services to fix the problem...for a fee. These services can range from things you can get elsewhere for free, things
you already have, ‘fixing’ other problems that don’t exist, and subscriptions that don’t do anything. That may not be the end of the scam. If you allow remote access, malware may be installed on your machine. Malware often scans files in search of personal information, which scammers can use to commit identity theft. Tips to Spot This Scam • Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you know it is the representative of a computer support team you contacted. • Legitimate tech support companies will never contact you unsolicited claiming knowledge of problems with your system. What You Can Do • Don’t click any links, don’t call a phone number, don’t send money. • Keep your security software up to date. Know what it looks like so you can spot fakes • Tell others about this scam. Report it to bbb.org/scamtracker.

Are you ready for a harsh winter? (NC) Snow and ice can strike suddenly, and with the Farmer’s Almanac predicting a “freezing, frigid and frosty” season, it’s good to be prepared. This includes making sure your car is ready to navigate roads that can suddenly become treacherous. Here are some expert tips on how to pick the best set of tires so you can thrive in our frigid northern winter months: Choose tires built for winter In snow, ice and cold weather, all-season tires just won’t cut it – they have harder compounds that don’t grip well in these conditions, and their tread patterns aren’t designed to provide elite winter traction. On the other hand, winter tires have softer compounds designed to handle well on cold, slick surfaces. They also have superior tread shape and other technology more appropriate for navigating inhospitable roads. But it’s important to note that not all winter tires are equal. While many tire manufacturers make winter products, some companies are experts at it. For example, Nokian Tyres invented the winter tire in 1934, and the Finnish manufacturer tests its products north of the Arctic Circle for more than 200 days each year, ensuring they’re ready for the worst winter extremes. Studded versus non-studded tires Consider the road hazards you’re most likely to face. If you’re more likely to encounter icy roads than snowy ones, studded winter tires are the best choice for you. Studded tires are the ideal choice for wet ice and hard-packed snow. Non-studded tires are well-suited for areas that receive more snow than ice. They can also be installed earlier in the fall, since they’re better on dry roads than studded tires. So, if you experience unpredictable autumn conditions, nonstudded tires will have you covered sooner in the season. Remember that studded tires aren’t legal in all areas, so check your province’s regulations before heading to the shop. Timing your installation Generally, it’s best to put on your winter tires when the temperature consistently falls below 7°C. That’s the point at which all-season tires typically become less effective, since their compounds begin to harden and lose grip on the road. “All-season tires are only meant for all four seasons if you live in Phoenix,” says Steve Bourassa, director of products and pricing for Nokian Tyres. “When fall temperatures arrive, it’s time for every Canadian to switch to a reliable set of winter or all-weather tires.”

4 easy ways to minimize gift-giving stress (NC) Being tasked with finding a great gift for a friend, family member or office Secret Santa can prove challenging. Sure, there’s the worry of the gift selection itself – even the best gifters can find themselves stumped when attempting to buy for the person who has everything, or for someone they barely know. Factor in the stress of gift wrapping, timely delivery if you’re ordering online and trying to score a just-right item that also suits your budget, and you’ve got a perfect holiday-anxiety storm. Fortunately, alleviating the aforementioned stress is very possible. Here are four ways to help: 1. Whittle your list. Even if it feels like your people-to-shop-for list is set in stone, know this: it’s okay to reassess each year. Buying for kids instead of adults in a family-and-friends dynamic is a great way

to minimize spending and incorporating an ornament exchange with hard-tobuy-for types will keep the spirit of giving alive without sacrificing your sanity in the process. 2. Be a purposeful shopper. A great way to avoid buying items your recipients don’t want or need? Make a list. Whether you prefer to shop in-store or online, being prepared before you buy will help minimize unnecessary purchases. And making a list early will also help you determine if you’re planning on buying too many gifts, period. 3. Get emotional. A study published by the Journal of Consumer Psychology found that many participants chose to give a personal but predictable present, assuming the recipient would prefer it. Interestingly, the study found gift recipients
valued emotional gifts that tugged at their heartstrings instead. The takeaway: choosing a gift that’s meaningful and gives back is never wrong. Purchasing a gift from World Vision’s gift catalogue is a great way to feel good about giving, especially considering that each donation has the power to literally change a life. 4. Shop early and shop smart. Sometimes it’s not possible to finish your holiday shopping by September. So, whenever possible, make a plan to set aside a few hours on a weekend or after work to chip away at your list online or in person to avoid the chaotic last-minute rush. And for those who prefer to shop online but are concerned about delivery dates? Shopping early (and with reputable retailers) is even more important.

They are automatically mobile friendly and are supplied with unlimited technical support for the life of the contract term. There are no large startup fees, and payment terms are based on affordable monthly rates. All hosting and maintenance is included.
