Note from our

Editor

As I write this, snow is finally starting to softly fall here in my home town of Regina. What an unusual November we have had! As lovely as it was to enjoy fall a little bit longer, with exactly thirty days today until Christmas, dare I say I’m ready for a little bit of the white stuff. I really do enjoy experiencing all four seasons.

How quickly this year has passed. It seems unreal that I am writing what will be the last editor’s note for 2015. This past year, we have been blessed here at Pink to not only work with such incredible talent in the province, but learn of so many women who are truly making a difference. Thank you to all who submitted story ideas and especially to all of the women who graced our covers, allowing us to share your wonderful stories. Thank you also goes out to our loyal readership. We appreciate your ongoing support with our print and online stories. We love connecting with you on our social media platforms, and it always makes our day seeing you pass along and share our stories with others. If you haven’t already complete your holiday shopping for all the little ones in your life, I suggest checking out this month’s cover story and support local by picking up a copy of the Cook by Colours cookbook! Establishing a diet that incorporates healthy foods was an important consideration for both Jessie and Brent when designing the Cook by Colours cookbook. For example, the book’s cupcake recipe incorporates a spinach puree. This health-conscious alternative boosts the finished product’s nutritional value without compromising its 10 |

She goes on to explain how the cookbook is a “tool to not only increase integral knowledge and skills about food preparation, but also to build a strong, healthy relationship with your family and the food you are enjoying.” “Even before the book, it seemed like lots more people were cooking with their kids,” says Jessie, who relishes in any opportunity to spend time with Esime and Tanion. “Food has a way of bringing

These skills include basic hygiene, enhanced fine-motor skills, patience, communication and more. “With this cookbook, we want to help children become confident, well-rounded individuals,” says Jessie. “We believe that part of being a good parent is nurturing skills and starting this when kids are young. Our cookbook is a tool that makes this process easier and helps kids learn valuable life lessons.”

“So many people have been involved with this project, from tastetesting recipes to deciding the best way to portray, in picture form, what the little chefs who will use our book had to do.” The couple decided to submit their idea as part of the 2013 Saskatchewan Business Challenge, an annual competition for entrepreneurs to pitch and develop a business plan with the help of a variety of experienced professionals. Help Yourself Reduce Investment Stress

We all know that stress can have many adverse affects on our lives and can affect the quality of our health. Cutting out stressors, including in your investment activities can have a positive affect. But how can you cut down on the various stresses associated with investing? Here are a few possible “stress-busters”: Know your risk tolerance. If you’re constantly worrying about the value of your investments, your portfolio may simply be too volatile for your individual risk tolerance. Conversely, if you’re always feeling that your investments will never provide you with the growth you need to achieve your long-term goals, you might be investing too conservatively. Know what to expect from your investments. Uncertainty is often a leading cause of stress. So when you purchase investments that are mysterious to you, you shouldn’t be surprised if they perform in ways that raise your stress levels. Never invest in something unless you fully understand its characteristics and risk potential. Be prepared for market volatility. Historically, the financial markets have trended upward, though their past performance can’t guarantee future results. Yet for periods of months, and even years, these same markets can sputter and decline. So when you invest, be aware of this volatility; if you’re prepared for it, you won’t be shocked when it happens, and you should be able to better keep stress at bay. Maintain realistic expectations. If you think your investments are going to earn a very high rate of return, year after year, you are more than likely going to be disappointed — and you could easily get “stressed out.” You’re much better off, from a stress standpoint, not to expect eye-popping results. Diversify your portfolio. If you were only to own one asset class, such as growth stocks, and that particular segment took a big hit during a market drop, your whole portfolio could suffer, and it could take years to recover — causing you no end of stress. But if you spread your investment dollars among a range of vehicles — stocks, bonds, government securities and so on — your portfolio has a better chance of weathering the ups and downs of the market. (Keep PMS 5535 in mind, though, that while diversification may help you reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t prevent losses or guarantee profits.) Think long term. If you only measure your investment success by short-term results, you can feel frustrated and stressed. But when you stop to consider your objectives, you may find that the most important ones, such as a comfortable retirement, are all long-term in nature. Consequently, it makes more sense to measure the progress you’re making with your investments in periods of years, or even decades, rather than days or months. Instead of fretting over your monthly investment statements, compare where you are today versus where you were 10 or 15 years ago. The results may well surprise and help “de-stress” you.

Hair Products for All Types of Hair Not sure what to get your family and friends for the holidays? Why not get them hair products? Fine and thin hair: People who have fine and thin hair generally are nervous about using different or too many products. Their type of hair can typically get weighed down easily, and can look very greasy when heavy products are used. Shampoos and conditioners that say “maximum body” or “thickening” are great for people with fine hair. For styling products, look for lightweight mousse, volumizers, light hair spray or a volume styling powder; these products help maximize fullness for someone that wants thicker looking hair.

conditioners are great for all types of hair. How often they use it will depend on the type of hair; someone with thick coarse or curly hair could use it daily or regularly, where as someone with finer hair would benefit from it once a week. Happy Holidays! And Happy Hair Days!

Curly hair: People who have curly hair generally are trying to battle frizz, especially during the cold, dry winter. Deep conditioners, hydrating oils and smoothing creams work wonders. People with curly hair will try any product to help tame the mane. Think moisture and hydrate! Thick coarse straight hair: People with thick, coarse straight hair might enjoy a little bit of serum on their ends, but other than that, probably don’t load their hair with products since it already feels thick and heavy. Try buying them a hydrating or normal shampoo and conditioner they can use regularly. Unsure of the type of hair they have? Go with a nice smelling hair spray or a light hydrating serum that is paraben free. With it being winter, hair, lips and skin tends to be dry because of the lack of moisture in the air. To make up for the dryness, deep

I want to hear from you! Ask me anything! thehollybarker@gmail.com

ASK HOLLY

New!

with Holly Barker Hey Holly ... The thing I struggle with the most is balance - balance in a busy life with a child, a job and a business. How do you stay focused and on track while finding balance to still LIVE? There are times I feel like I am constantly thinking about when is the next workout, what am I eating next, where am I eating next, etc. I feel as if sometimes I shut myself out from my friends and family because the balance just isn’t there. Being as you travel a lot but are always on point with the next shoot coming up, or appearance to be made, how do you stay on track, stay motivated and focused, but still allow yourself to explore the world and seize opportunities? Eager for your thoughts! Thank you! ~Teshia Answer: Hi Teshia! I love this question because balance is something we all search for, but I have a very hard time answering this question because balance for each individual is incredibly personal. No one can tell you how to reach or live your balance. The truth is, balance is something you need to practice. You can still be driven and goal orientated while practicing balance; it just takes preparation, prioritization and planning with the ability to respond and react with a balanced approach to things that come up unexpectedly. I believe where we let our- selves down is by not realizing that our response and mindset is just as important as our planning and execution when trying to live in balance. As a competitor, we are programmed to be solely focused on every action, consumption and detail for that 2-minute stint on stage … however, life does not always understand your goal, and distractions creep their way in every day. To live balance, you must live each day for something more than those 2 minutes. You can still be on point with nutrition, training and details to be your best for whatever goal you have coming up, but this end goal should not supersede the goal to live your best every day - not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. The more factors we involve on a daily basis, the more planning we must do to confirm we are scheduling everything it takes to reach our goal. After assessing all the ‘need to’s’ to reach this goal, change your mindset and change these into ‘get to’s.’ Sometimes it is as simple as changing your mindset and asking yourself the right questions to help you achieve a more balanced approach to your day and every day forward. Find what works for you while still living your life. And I repeat … find what works for you, not what everyone else expects of you. Enjoying friends and social outings does not have to come at a cost to your personal success. This does not mean neglect to your children, your relationships, your work or home responsibilities, it means scheduling your day so that you can achieve the greatness you strive for. Balance is making sure you align your actions to the results you want consistently every day in mind, heart and body. Practice every day and reflect on your growth. In reflecting on your consis22 |

tent growth you will find that your balanced approach is constantly changing and evolving. As long as you continue to grow, learn and achieve, you will continuously find new balance each day.

it again through an 8-10 week period. This will give your body a chance to reset its expectations and ability to respond to the changes you would like to make.

I look forward to watching you grow Teshia. You are a beautiful woman who is accomplishing great things. Your drive empowers others to do better and your willingness to grow is what will allow you to continue to succeed in whatever you set out to do. Stay true to what makes you happy, what works for you and balance will ultimately be the result of your every day.

When factoring what it takes to create change, we must take all input and output into consideration. In your case, if we do not slow down the output to reset and eventually reintroduce change, we cannot create an environment for muscle growth. If our bodies are constantly in a stressed state (i.e. Over training) we are acidic, our adrenals exhaust and our cortisol is increased causing insulin release, fat storage and muscle growth near impossible. When trying to increase lean muscle mass, we need to create an environment conducive to do so and resetting the body’s expectations is a great start. This reset can be done in conjunction to implementing a strategic strength training plan and fuelling properly to gain lean mass.

Hi Holly, I recently read an issue of Pink magazine and saw your Ask Holly section. This got me to thinking about my current fitness situation and I have a question for you in regards to my personal fitness journey. Over the years my body has gone through some big changes. I am a former university athlete (volleyball) who used to have a ton of muscle mass as we were with our trainer in the gym anywhere from 3-5 days a week (in addition to practice and competition). Once I finished my degree and my playing career, I stopped doing weight training and fell into the “cardio trap” and over the past two years with a high cardio fitness regime and change in diet (portion sizes a lot smaller). I have lost 45 pounds of muscle (not good!). I finally got sick and tired of feeling and looking “weak” and have been trying to make some improvements to my diet and fitness regime. I regularly teach a spin class (1 day a week) and kickboxing class (1 day a week) and enjoy these, however I realized I needed to start doing some weight lifting again to put some muscle back on (definitely not 45 pounds worth). Now I’m noticing it’s a real struggle to actually gain lean muscle mass. I’ve been tracking my macros and upping my caloric intake, however my ultimate question is how much cardio is too much cardio now that I’m incorporating weight lifting? I aim to do weights 3 days per week and have currently been doing cardio (spin or kickboxing) 4-5 days a week. I fear I am fatiguing my body, but struggle with the fear of putting on excess fat rather than lean muscle. ~Roxanne Answer: Hi Roxanne! I love and absolutely relate to this! So many of us fall into the cardio trap. It is awesome you love being so active. Cardio for many of us is a safe place and mentally therapeutic, allowing us to release tension and those feel good endorphins. However, when you plan to strategically gain lean muscle mass, too much cardio can definitely hinder your ability to do so. I have come up against this challenge as well, and understand the mental struggle this involves. The question of how much is too much is hard to answer, but the response I believe to be true to anything is, no change will yield no change. Allow yourself a timeline you can dedicate to your self-improvement. A time where you will transition from cardio queen to the strong physique you wish to achieve. I suggest a 14-18 week timeline. Consider slowly reducing your cardio through a 4-week period reaching minimal cardio for 2-4 weeks before slowly implementing

Know that reducing cardio expenditure does not mean you have to do nothing. Take this opportunity to exercise your mental strength, to encourage your body’s ability to be strong. You can implement new ways to stimulate yourself through yoga, meditation. Assure yourself that this is short-term rest and recovery to do what is best for your body, in order to make the most of your fuel and ultimately build strength. Strength training - Structure your training schedule to focus on the areas you are wanting to build. Stay away from total body training and focus on 1-2 muscle groups per day allowing proper rest for each muscle group before working it again. Keep rep ranges lower and focus on slow and controlled movements to form the foundation you will build upon. Make sure you are fueling your workouts properly and consuming enough calories to make a change and repair the new lifting schedule you are performing.

Fuel - Fill your diet with whole foods to fuel your activity. Eat throughout the day and make sure each meal/mini meal/snack includes a protein source. Keep foods minimally processed and low on the glycemic index and make sure you are getting proper rest and hydration. These will all ensure an optimal environment for lean muscle growth and minimal fat storage. Track your success through measurements, lean muscle mass/ body fat percentage, strength gains and progress photos rather than solely on the number on the scale. When changing composition, weight gain is necessary and loving your new shape is important. Stay away from the word fat and embrace this change and

THE EDEN

VILLAGE

NEIGHBOURHOOD Eden Care Communities Inc. (ECC) is the parent company for a group of non-profit, charitable and faith based organizations dedicated to enhancing and promoting an increased quality of life for all. This is accomplished through the provision of integrated and intergenerational housing, clinical, personal and spiritual care services, which preserve independence and promote growth. ECC envisions connected, fulfilled and secure communities of people, who are served by an empowered and innovative staff team. Eden Care Communities Inc. was incorporated in 2007 as a not-forprofit charitable housing, health and wellness service provider located in Regina, Saskatchewan. ECC oversees the operations of the Regina Lutheran Home, Broadway Terrace, Milton Heights, Eden Care Health, Eden Care Communities Foundation and the Regina Lutheran Hospital Chaplaincy. ECC provides safe, secure, affordable and supportive housing, and care services to over 400 seniors, adults, families and children both internally and externally. All of their housing and care facilities are Eden Certified. Their Eden journey commenced in 2006 when ECC began implementing the Eden Alternative Philosophy at the Regina Lutheran Home, becoming an Eden Alternative registered home in 2010. In 2013, Broadway Terrace became the first assisted-living complex to be a registered Eden Care Philosophy facility in Western Canada. Milton Heights has just begun its journey with their goal to be registered in 2016. Eden Alternative training continues to be provided to staff and board members. ECC continue to measure the changes in outcomes and satisfaction. The Eden Alternative Philosophy is a person-centered and person-directed approach resulting in a culture change reflected in their activ-

ities and facilities. The adoption of this new philosophy and culture change meant ECC had to abandon the institutional approach and medical model in which patients only receive care based on the service provider’s needs. The focus has now changed to the residents, elders, adults, families and children to ensure all have the opportunity to participate in their own care, as well as make decisions about how they live their lives. Building on this new integrated and intergenerational paradigm, the Eden Alternative affirms care is not mutually exclusive, but rather a collaborative partnership with elders and their care partner team. The goal is to eliminate the “Three Plagues;” loneliness, helplessness and boredom. This is often found in those who find themselves vulnerable and isolated within their community. ECC is transforming the care environment into habitats for people that promote quality of life for children, residents, elders, families, or those who collaborate with them as care partners. Care partners and elders build relationships that offer opportunities to care for animals, plants, and provide daily opportunities to participate in meaningful activities including creative art and music. All caregivers and care receivers are truly care partners, empowering and supporting their choice to live the life they choose to live. In a culture that typically views at-risk adults, families, and aging as a period of decline, the Eden Alternative Philosophy asserts that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, every individual has the ability to continue to grow and thrive through focusing on abilities rather than disabilities. The Eden Alternative firmly believes culture change unfolds one relationship at a time, and deep change can only take root when the entire continuum of care is involved. Through education, consultation and outreach, we currently offer three applications of its principles and practices to support the uniqueness of each person we care for in our various living environments. These range from the special care home to the neighborhood street to independent living. Our ‘Dream’ seeks to extend the reach of this philosophy. The driving force behind the Eden Village complex is the idea that our traditional communities too often tend to create sterile lifeless environments for residents, and in turn foster loneliness, helplessness and boredom. Fundamental changes to the way ECC builds caring communities including affordable housing and long term care need to ensure their loved ones’ lives are inclusive, healthier, livelier and more meaningful. ECC believes they can use the historic strengths and values of integrated and intergenerational care as the basis for creating real homes and communities that can protect, sustain and nurture the most vulnerable. FASHIONING THE DREAM In 2011, the Board of Eden Care Communities Inc. began to dream

26 |

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 4 ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2015

about what it would take to expand their services and approach to a whole community rather than to the individual facilities we owned. ECC knew the broader community of neighbors lacked a primary care facility and a full range of recreational facilities. For these reasons, Eden Care Communities Inc. funded the first phase of a community engagement journey that sought to determine priority community needs and involved agencies that were interested in looking at ways in which those needs could be met. THE VISION - CONSULTATION AND RECOMMENDATION To begin the consultation, ECC established “The Village Vision” of a caring community within NE Regina, centered on a neighborhood complex designed to meet the needs of the various resident communities, including First Nations and Métis, new Immigrants (newcomers), and the fast growing senior population in the area. These first two consultations identified the following priority needs: A village based on integration of services (navigation and access); intergenerational care for the whole of the community ranging from children, youth, adults and seniors; a primary health care and wellness centre with an embedded family practice and mental health services; intergenerational educational opportunities; a variety of supportive housing facilities with embedded services and supports; an emphasis on diversity; a place to buy healthy groceries; increased recreational facilities, and more green space. OUR DREAM - THE PLAN This planning phase will be driven by the following Vision: “To establish an intergenerational vibrant human habitat or village within the greater NE Regina community where all whose lives it touches are encouraged and supported to flourish through an Eden Alternative Care and Wellness model.” Based on a stakeholder’s meeting confirmation of the Vision in late 2014, the Eden Care Communities Inc. Board of Directors directed the staff to proceed with the following: The development of a feasibility plan and preparations to respond to Social Services affordable housing; the development of a 24-30 month innovation and percolation centre to test various systems, approaches, staffing models, and integration models and funding models for those activities envisioned within our new complex but for which ECC may not have in-house management expertise. Currently the feasibility, construction and validation plan is looking at the following programs and services, thus creating a true neighborhood village with many needed community services: Special Care Home Facility (the replacement of Regina Lutheran Home); Personal Care Home; Supportive Housing (Affordable and Vulnerable Adult and Family); Integrated Primary Health Care and Wellness Centre; Intergenerational Care Program (Adult Wellness and Child Care Programs); Allied Medical Health facilities (Mental Health, Addiction, Nutrition, Podiatry, etc.); Retail Pharmacy; Community Spiritual Space; Community Music and Creative Arts Space; Community Meeting Space(s), and a Community Market. Over the next 12 to 18 months there will be many more consultations that will aid with the design and costing estimates for the new facilities that will house the expanded and existing services ECC hope to deliver at some time in the future. In the meantime at Regina Lutheran Home, ECC will be experimenting with a few expanded service

delivery options, as well as providing the space for a number of new health and wellness services that others will provide. These services are based on needs expressed in previous community consultations as well as our ability to provide space for services that respond to statistically determined community need. It will allow them to determine the cost of expanding these services to the NE Regina Community as well as increase their own management expertise in the provision of services ECC have not previously delivered. Community Day and Wellness Centre The Eden Care Communities Board believes that the success of the Integrated Primary Health Care and Wellness Clinic will grow from the integration of a broad spectrum of care services. Initially these other services will include the Adult and Wellness Center, Saplings Early Learning Child Care Center and the Eden At Home Program. This integration will ensure the maximum use of baths, recreation programs, food services, child care, etc., in support of the broader community’s needs and thus represent the beginning of a “total care” through an “extended family” community model. The Adult Day and Wellness Center will include a number of services: Recreation therapy; physiotherapy and occupational therapy by referral to Eden Care at Home or the Allied Healthcare services; clinic based home care services, such as bathing, activities and exercise maintenance to restore or develop function and to promote quality of life; assessments of cognitive, perceptual and motor function; task assessment (activities of daily living); postural seating and adaptive FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 4 ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2015 | 27

Armed with the current and future state, the team includes the individual requesting service and a personal care plan outlining the roles of all partners in the plan. These partners may include homecare, physician, family, neighbors and volunteers and may also include the 24-hour a day Eden Nurse Case-Manager and Eden relationship and community supports. MOVING FROM HERE TO THERE Health and wellness organizations recognize the need for a new approach, to extend elder and adult at risk care services beyond the “bricks and mortar” of Hospitals and Special Care Homes, to “home support and care” type programs.

environment assessments by referral to Eden Care at Home, Allied Healthcare services or nursing in the IPHCWC; Social Work, Mental Health and Addiction Services that enable patients, residents and their families to deal with the emotional, social and economic changes and losses associated with illness, hospitalization and institutionalization by referral to Eden Care at Home, Allied Healthcare services or nursing in the IPHCWC; Spiritual Care services; nutrition and food services, and education and training. Eden Care at Home Program The final component of the long term plan is the Eden Care at Home Program. Eden Care at Home will utilize a multi-disciplinary team to provide assessments of community residents’ social, physical, dietary and environmental risks (falls, unsafe or unreliable heating systems, unsafe railings etc.), then examine ways to reduce those risks and connect clients to resources that will meet their needs in order to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle. It is part of a continuum of care for elders and community members beginning with complete independence without support in their own homes, transitioning to independent living with supports and/or living in your own home with Eden Care at Home support and finally transitioning to living within an Eden Care facility. The full continuum of care ensures smooth transitions between living environments with consistent care with familiar care providers. The proposed Eden Care at Home Program will include support for: Elders without medical conditions who require home support; elders requiring support for Dementia care; care for elders with chronic conditions; care for elders with degenerative conditions; post-discharge care for elders being discharged from acute and emergency services are a few examples. The Eden Care at Home process begins with a home visit by a Case Manager or Assessor where the elder, or vulnerable adult, their family and other care providers share an understanding of the current abilities, needs, and how they would like to be cared for. The assessment could include a review of the physician or hospital discharge care plan, a review of medications, and a team conference. With an understanding of the current needs or wants the team develops a care plan. The focus of the plan is to help each person live independently as long as possible, which requires them to be empowered to make personal decisions and to do as many things as possible for themselves. Their health care coaching role will complement the health care access and navigation services role that ECC provides to those who need support to continue to live in their own homes.

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 4 ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2015

Eden Care will promote and support these efforts and offer to partner to locate health care and wellness services to better meet service needs in the NE Regina area. The population of NE Regina is comprised of a number of diverse groups. The health status and income data indicate the area has a higher rate of complex health needs and a lower average income. Their aim would be to provide services to those who live in the area and may be experiencing difficulty in accessing a family doctor or a clinic because of shortages or a lack of transportation. The need to provide “home based” elder and adult directed and centered care services would be aimed to provide a more efficient, cost effective and financially sustainable approach. ECC sees that growth in elders, vulnerable adults, gifted and special needs youth, and children is as much about giving as it is receiving. ECC knows how these interactions counter the effects of boredom, loneliness and helplessness. ECC truly believes that it takes the involvement of an entire community or neighborhood to educate, nourish and care for its members regardless of age, social status or culture. At each of their facilities ECC have witnessed the growth within their neighborhoods because of that community interaction. The “Neighborhood Complex” ECC hopes to develop is based on the concept of “your extended family” and will have four integrated pillars: Wellness - through the creation of an Integrated Primary Health Care and Wellness Centre; Education - hinged around the students and staff of Imperial and McDermid School, families and elders; Intergenerational Care - catering to the needs of the family and community care providers; elder care - centered on the Regina Lutheran Home but with seamless outreach into the community to allow aging-inplace, and Community - the glue that will create an interconnected neighbourhood that would provide the physical and philosophical interconnectivity of multiuse and functional green areas that could combine the benefits of spiritual care, music, community spirit, social market and entrepreneurial meeting areas. As a result of their early consultations, their dream has evolved.

Market Theatre Gum Wall

A DAY OF FUN IN SEATTLE By Dale Strawford

I hear the word Seattle and “Sleepless in Seattle” is always what comes to mind. Pop culture has that effect on you sometimes. My first trip to Seattle surprised me immediately with how beautiful the city is. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the city has this interesting geographical feeling of being largely surrounded by water, while being inside a forest; earning it the nickname ‘Emerald City.’ I visited the home of Starbucks in November, and with the forest turning colour, it really made the cityscape amazing. The big draw was to get to the waterfront area and visit the Pike Place Market, which was highly recommended by friends. It is famously home to one of the oldest farmers markets in the United States with over 100 years of history as a marketplace, with nine acres of small booths and shops offering what’s in season. It is not often you get to see fish thrown for fun but the Pike Place Fish Market has been doing it forever. In the 80’s, the market was struggling and a meeting was held on how to save the company and an employee suggested they not only save it but make it world famous. And throwing fish was born. Anyone can throw fish of course, but the staff makes it fun with customers, and everyone likes to be around people who are enjoying themselves. This engaging behaviour was evident in many of the booths in the market area, with staff having fun conversations. The market is designated as a historic district and is run as a non-profit supporting low-income housing and services for area residents. We were hungry and headed down to Ivar’s Seafood for some chowder where I bought a small smoked salmon chowder. The staff acted like they were puzzled that such a small chowder would satisfy me and asked why I didn’t want a meal. They made it an experience and it was enjoyable, just like the chowder. Their sign says it all, ‘Keep Clam.’ Seattle is also home to Starbucks with its original store opening in the Pike Market area in the 1970’s selling only coffee beans; later moving into the espresso that made it famous. The store is notable for the fact it is the only Starbucks that can sell coffee mugs 32 |

with the original logo on them, which is racier and since has been homogenized for the masses. It’s interesting for a visit and you can get a one of a kind coffee mug for a friend. It seems strange to purposely look somewhere people have stuck their gum, but that is just what we did. In the Post Alley, there is a wall where people have been famously sticking their gum for decades. Historically patrons of a local Market Theatre were asked to remove their gum before entering and the gross but interesting tradition was born. While we posed for the obligatory photo there was an individual there removing the gum from the wall by hand to protect the masonry, perhaps the worst job ever listed in a classified ad. My travelling buddies and I spent a few hours at the Pike Brewing Company because we all just happen to like beer. Within the bar is a beer museum where tours actually are run to view all the memorabilia on the walls and within the bar. Noteworthy stuff, but I was more interested at that point in their stout. We enjoyed some new beers, and purchased several growlers to enjoy later. We called Uber for a ride back to our hotel and seeking to provide more exact details, one of my crew helpIvars Smoked Salmon Chowder fully indicated that we were close by a Starbucks. Too funny as it appears a Starbucks is required by law in Seattle on almost every block. Sometimes destinations are known for the unusual. And sometimes that is what sets them apart.

new years eve slumber party The countdown to 2016 is on! Is your family planning anything special to ring in the New Year? A fun idea for kids is a New Year’s Eve Slumber Party. Movie marathons, silly games, toasting with sparkling juice - there are plenty of fun ideas for planning this party for kids! Decorating Ideas Save those Christmas decorations for your New Year’s party! The silver and gold decorations will work for both holidays. Paper lanterns, serving trays, plastic champagne glasses, round tree ornaments, candles, and tinsel in gold or silver are all easy ways to decorate your party table. A New Year’s Eve party is supposed to be noisy so don’t forget the noisemakers and confetti poppers!

Party crackers are super easy to make with old wrapping paper tubes, tissue paper and ribbon. You can fill them with candies, jokes, and small party favours. When planning your party and sending invitations, be sure to let guests know if you want them to bring their own sleeping bags and pillows. Party Food If you’re having a movie marathon at the party, you’ll want to have a concession stand with popcorn, candies and soda. In the Moms & Munchkins Etsy shop, you’ll find printable snack boxes perfect for movies plus other printables for your New Year’s Eve Slumber Party. Appetizer ideas for the party include: •

sparkling juice

cheese and cracker tray

chips and dip

nachos

bite-sized appetizers

a sundae bar with ice cream and a variety of mix-ins

midnight cookies and milk for toasting the new year

Don’t forget about breakfast the next morning or brunch after everyone is done sleeping in! Ideas for a group brunch include:

34 |

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 4 ISSUE 12, DECEMBER 2015

variety of mini cereals

homemade waffles or pancakes

fresh fruit

smoothie bar with fresh fruit, yogurt and juices

cinnamon buns, cookies or donuts

eggs, hash browns and bacon

Activities To help keep everyone awake until midnight (no one wants to miss the first minutes of the New Year!), you’ll want to plan lots of activities for the kids to choose from. Some ideas include: •

a family-friendly version of Truth or Dare

charades all with a popular new year’s resolution twist like exercising more, traveling more, saving money, etc.

watching a slideshow filled with pictures from 2015

writing your new year’s eve resolutions

dance party or music-themed games like Name That Tune or a lip-sync battle

an art project like drawing your best memory of 2015

spa treatments like DIY manicure, pedicure, and facials

hosting a silly awards show with awards for things like Funniest Moment Of The Year, Best Dressed, etc.

glow in the dark games like a glowing scavenger hunt game or a homemade glow bowling game

watching movies

A creative way to set out your games is by making countdown bags. Basically you’ll have 7 bags all labeled with the time from 6 p.m. to midnight (one per hour). Fill each bag with an activity for that hour. For example, one bag could have a familyfriendly version of Truth or Dare in it; the next bag could have the awards for your silly awards show; the next could have the clues for your glowing scavenger hunt game, etc. The guests could open one bag per hour for a mystery activity. The bag for midnight could be filled with midnight kisses (Hershey’s chocolate kisses), noise makers, party hats, etc. A fun party favour idea would be to give each guest a journal for 2016 so they can capture their year’s most memorable moments. I hope your 2016 is filled with lots of love and laughter!
