Note from our Editor Life is all about balance. Eat well, but don’t forget to enjoy the pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Stay active, but try to sleep in and “veg out” everyone once in a while. Put your hours in at work, but remember to be present for your family and friends too. Save ten percent of your paycheck for a rainy day, but splurge on that coat you’ve been eyeing up for weeks. Having that sense of equilibrium in our lives helps us to appreciate the hard work we have put in and to savour the moments of tranquility we have earned. In Pink Magazine, you will find articles and columns that touch on all aspects of women’s lives. We hope you find a satisfying balance of information about fashion, food, and fitness, and inspiration from our featured women whose stories appeal to many of us in different ways. FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 10, OCTOBER 2016
Like most golfers, Anna is seldom in one place for long: although the Saskatonian now calls Florida home, she took her interview from a hotel room in Illinois, where she waited to learn if she’d been accepted to compete in a tournament the following day. Anna laughed as she shared that “golf really isn’t as glamorous as people often think it is.” It wasn’t until Anna’s early teen years that she considered and then actively pursued a career in golf. Up to that point, she dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. Her parents’ love for golf meant it held a special place in the Young family, but it would take years before Anna developed a similar connection to the game. “Golf was meshed in with all the other sports I played, and it wasn’t until later that it started to stand out from the rest and become my main focus.” “As I began to play more, I started liking it more,” she reveals. “What I came to love most about golf is that it’s an independent game; whatever I do, I am completely accountable for it. By fourteen, I knew I wanted to take it somewhere, and I knew I needed to do something now.” Saskatchewan’s short golf season stunted Anna’s growth as a golfer; to take her game to the next level, an international move was in order. After two years at Saskatoon’s Holy Cross High School, sixteen-year-old Anna—with the support of her family— made the bold decision to relocate to Windermere, Florida to attend the Core Golf Academy. This allowed her the opportunity to focus on enhancing her golf game without sacrificing a traditional, in-school student experience. After graduation, Anna remained in the United States and spent her first year as a collegiate golfer for the University of Tulsa in
ity. “At one point, it got so bad that I couldn’t even open a jar, and I knew I needed to be proactive and figure out what was going on with my wrist. I then found out that surgery would be my best option for playing pain-free golf in the future.” Anna’s recovery meant that she would not be physically able to play in a tournament for almost fifteen months. A testament to her strength of character, Anna saw this break not as justification for feeling hopeless and dejected, but as an opportunity to invest time and energy into other aspects of her life. “I did a lot of community service during that time and learned a lot about myself—my personality, how I work, and what I enjoy doing,” she explains. “I definitely missed golf, but that time helped me recognize that I knew I wanted to play professionally.” The self-awareness Anna developed and demonstrated during her hiatus is something many athletes struggle to master throughout their professional careers. Anna learned an important lesson: even though golf was and would remain a major part of her life, it did not define her as an individual. “It’s very easy for athletes who can’t play their sport to suddenly become depressed, because they feel like they’ve lost part of their identity,” she says. “It’s very easy to become lost in that mindset, but for me, that injury was a wake-up call.” Anna reinvigorated her love for hobbies outside of golf: reading, cooking, and guitar, to name a few. Whenever possible, she steals away to her family’s cabin at Waskesiu Lake in Prince Albert National Park. It doesn’t take long before Anna is itching to get back on the course, but she cherishes time spent with the people who are most important to her.
It’s important to make sure you schedule in breaks and make time for people you love and hobbies you enjoy. Tulsa, Oklahoma. While there, she fell in with a wonderful network of peers and coaches—many of whom she keeps in regular contact with—but was bothered by a disconnect between her approach to the game and the facility’s coaching philosophy. Determined to find a more harmonious fit, Anna transferred to the University of Florida, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a focus in Business Administration.
“I make sure I schedule my practice so I get done what I need to get done, and that I give myself the time to recuperate mentally and physically. Whether that means reading or hanging out with friends and family, it’s a mental break so that I can go back to the course and be ready to focus on my practice. It’s important to make sure you schedule in breaks and make time for people you love and hobbies you enjoy.”
“It was a really hard decision to leave [the University of Tulsa],” she admits. “I knew the longer I stayed, the harder it would be to go, but I’m glad I did because I was able to find a great university with a great golf program that helped me to succeed.”
When she returned to the sport, Anna made great use of the mental discipline and clarity she’d harnessed during her recovery. Golf, she explained, is a game that is as physical as it is mental, and success is only possible by developing a regimen that caters to both. “In golf, you can’t always compare to the field. The truth is, the only person you’re competing against is yourself. This is exactly what makes the game so hard, because you have to create a physical and mental routine that can work together.”
Following a successful first year with the University of Florida’s golf team, Anna injured her wrist during an off-season workout. At first she dismissed the injury as minor, but over time the pain started to negatively affect her golf game and her physical mobil-
FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 10, OCTOBER 2016 | 7
“When it comes to golf, it really depends on the round,” she continues. “Some days I’ll play really well; I’m relaxed, talkative, and everything just seems to work. Other days I’ll be very focused, less talkative, and have a different demeanour. I have found I can play well with both mindsets; it’s a matter of figuring out what I need that day or that week to play well.” Anna is quickly building an impressive list of accomplishments and has made a name for herself both at home in Saskatchewan and internationally. She was named the Saskatchewan Amateur Champion from 2010 to 2013 and again in 2015, clinched two Top 10 finishes and nine Top 25 finishes in collegiate events, secured an impressive collegiate win in her third year, served as part of the SEC Women’s Golf Community Service team, and won her first professional event in a National Women’s Golf Association event earlier this year in Longwood, Florida. Anna currently holds partial status on the Symetra Tour, the official developmental tour for the LPGA and the most established tour of its kind in the world. When asked how she defines success, Anna discussed how the concept has evolved for her over time from something physical and quantifiable to a balance of “small process goals and a mental state of mind.” She called the strategy “picking smart targets” and described it as an incremental approach that involves setting manageable goals that, over time, compound to create significant career gains. “I’ve learned that no matter what I shoot, it’s about enjoying myself and doing everything I can to meet the process goals I’ve set. This helps you to know when you need to do what you need to do. I’ve started to change my goals to fit my needs, and I know that eventually I’ll get to where I want to be.” Anna’s smart target strategy isn’t limited to the time she spends practicing and competing, either. Both on and off the course, she advocates for gender equality and seeks opportunities to boost the profile and awareness of women in golf and sport in general. “Men are paid disproportionately more than women in golf; there is less sponsorship, less awareness and, as a result, less interest. We might not hit the same monster shots as some of the male golfers out there, but that’s because women play a different game, and each tour has its own strengths. Change is happening—the amount of prize money on the Symetra Tour has doubled in only three years—but it’s a process and we still have a long ways to go.” Anna was also honest about some of the harsh realities that accompany a career in golf, a sport often perceived as elite, glamorous, and inaccessible to the masses. From long days spent in blistering heat or pounding rain to booking tournaments, arranging travel, and seeking sponsorship, the profession requires commitment, foresight, and a knack for organization. Fortunately for Anna, she has learned from the experiences of fellow golfers, and has had her parents to lean on for support. 8 |

We might not hit the same monster shots as some of the male golfers out there, but that’s because women play a different game. “My parents keep me grounded, organized, and have never pushed me to do anything I didn’t want to do,” says Anna, who credits her mother with managing a lot of the administrative work. “They are the most supportive people I know.”
get a call until just before your tee time, if at all. You are basically waiting for someone to drop out at the last minute; this brings a different kind of pressure, so it’s especially important not to get in your own head.”
One of the biggest challenges Anna is learning to overcome is remaining calm during the dreaded waiting game. “Sometimes I’ll be marked as an alternate for a tournament, which means you have to prepare like you’re going to play, but you might not
“The thing with golf is that the better you get, the smaller the margin for error,” she continues. “Yeah, I have the flexibility to do exactly what I want, but the down side to that is that I also have to know exactly what I want to do. Pursuing a career in golf

means that you need to know that you want to do it, and you need to be driven to do the work to get there.” Anna is proud of how far she’s come in her game and has much to look forward to in the months and years ahead. She has four tournaments confirmed for October and November, and a combination of Symetra and mini-tour events already scheduled for 2017. “As much as golf is an individual sport, I’m not the only person who got me where I am today,” says Anna, who expressed gratitude for her team of loyal supporters: her parents Ron and Joan, sister Emily, friends and extended family members, trainer and physiotherapist

When Investing, Put Time On Your Side CREATE YOUR PERSONAL LEGACY
We all wish the world could be a better place for our children and our children’s children. Yet, we have so little control over what happens as the world becomes a more unstable place to live. So, what can we do? One thing in our control is creating a legacy gift for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation in your will. This is a wonderful and generous thing to do. The Sandra Schmirler Foundation has donated millions of dollars for the purchase of life-saving equipment for babies born premature and critically ill, in Saskatchewan and right across Canada. Please call to receive a free copy of our new Legacy Guide.
Now that we’re well into autumn, the days are getting noticeably shorter. The change in seasons reminds us that time is passing – and it’s important to use that time wisely. When used well, in fact, time can be your greatest gift in many walks of life – and that’s certainly true when you invest. To illustrate the importance of time, let’s look at a scenario. Suppose you start saving for retirement when you are 25. If you invest $3,000 at the beginning of each year in a tax-deferred vehicle, such as a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), and you hypothetically earn a 7% annual return, you will have accumulated more than $640,000 after 40 years, when you reach 65 and are ready to retire. (Keep in mind that you will be taxed on withdrawals.) Now, though, suppose you wait until you’re 55 before you start saving seriously for retirement. If you put that same $3,000 per year in that same RRSP, earning that same hypothetical 7% return, you’d only end up with slightly more than $44,000 after 10 years, when you reach 65. To receive the $640,000 you would have accumulated after 40 years by contributing just $3,000 per year earlier on, you would have had to put in about $43,300 per year for the 10 years between ages 55 and 65.* Clearly, it’s a lot easier to come up with $3,000 per year than $43,500. So, to accumulate the resources you need for a comfortable retirement, you can help your cause by saving and investing as early in your working life as possible – and then continue to save and invest right up to, and even during, your retirement years. The ability to potentially grow your portfolio sizably is the key benefit of using time when you invest – but it’s not the only benefit. You can also use time as a target, or a way to frame a specific investment goal. For example, suppose you have an 8-year-old child whom you want to send to college or university in 10 years. When that day arrives, wouldn’t it be nice to know that you’ve been saving money for a decade? The popular education savings vehicle is a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), which means any growth of your money is tax deferred until the time when you need it.

ARE YOU AN ENTREPRENEUR WITH A DISABILITY? Whether you are 16 or 65, we offer disability supports and business services free of charge, so you can move forward with your vision of starting a business. Some Support includeS: • Providing one-on-one or group training in business development. • Reducing barriers, in terms of disability issues. • Mentoring and consulting services.
You can alsoPMS use5535 time as a signal to adjust your investment strategy. If you’re going to reach your retirement goal in, say, two or three years, you might want to shift some – but certainly not all – of your assets from growth-oriented investments to income-producing ones. As you know, the market will always fluctuate, so you don’t want to be in a position where, once you retire, you need to start taking significant withdrawals – i.e., selling investments –when the market is down. Remember the time-honored rule of investing: “Buy low, sell high.” When you invest, make the best possible use of time – remember, it’s the one asset that can’t be replenished. *Examples Black are for illustration purposes only and do not reflect any specific investment.

WHAT IS A FITNESSPRENEUR?
by Holly Barker
With all the promoting and content creation I am doing to brand and promote my new venture www.thefitnesspreneur.com, the most common questions I get are: “Holly, what is it that you are doing at TheFitnessPreneur.com ? What are you offering and what exactly is it?” I’m excited to elaborate and help educate you on my passion, my purpose, and this new chapter in my adventure! What is a FitnessPreneur? Well, to be true, it is how I define myself. The formal definition of an entrepreneur is, “a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.” However, there are many versions of “preneurs” and the most underestimated, I believe, is the FitnessPreneur. A FitnessPreneur is someone who loves business, loves living a healthy lifestyle, loves motivating others and ultimately wants to profit from their involvement in the health and wellness field. They want to create their own opportunities, brands, products, and companies without answering to a boss or putting in time at a job. With the rise in popularity of fitness competitions and the general public seeing the importance in living healthy as a direct correlation to living a full life, many business savvy women have taken to the fitness realm with an ultimate goal of turning their passion into profit. I have an intense love for business and an equal love for fitness, so when I set out to live a lifestyle that would pay me back in dividends (staying true to my finance educational roots) I thought to myself, “there is nothing that pays you back as much as living healthy does.” Many find a passion in fitness. It is an escape; a hobby that you enjoy to do for you. But what if you wanted this hobby to pay you back in the capacity that it fully can? Step one is to get fit, and to stay fit. Many of us have successfully dieted in the past only to find ourselves lost on what to do after the goal is achieved. Many of us have won a competition or a trophy, but the dollars, to say the least…. did not start to flow in immediately or add up to any significant amount. Step two is to reach your network. This is typically done through networking, rocking a photoshoot, submissions and content. This is where you will start to build your audience and transition from ‘a competitor’ to a name, a voice, an image and a contributor to the lifestyle. 12 |

Living in the Land of Living Skies means fall and winter coats are a must-have in any wardrobe. We are thrilled to report your choices in coat style this season have never been better. I’m not going to lie when I tell you I’m a little excited for these colder mornings! Keeping on trend while staying amazingly cozy has never been easier with these great choices on hand. Ponchos are a great item you can wear to ease into the cooler months of fall. We are loving the chunky knit necklines and the tassels this season. The Orb Clothing’s Woodland II hooded rain coat has to be the coziest and most plush fall coat I’ve ever tried on. Lined with the softest faux fur from inside the collar to down the insideback of the coat, combined with the extended length hi-lo style, this coat is a must-have staple in your closet. This is the jacket you will keep and look forward to wearing for years to come. It is a timeless and perfect piece for our Saskatchewan fall and spring seasons. Dex does not disappoint with this its ultra warm and cozy parka to get you through the coldest months in effortless style. Last, but definitely not least, and the pieces the Bella Chic team are the most excited about, are the wool-blend over coats this season. Gorgeous fall colors with retro-inspired lines make this the must-have for your cold-weather closet in 2016. Find these and more fall and winter fashions now at Bella Chic online and instore. Visit Bella Chic in our new store at 5P Great Plains Rd West, Emerald Park, just minutes East of Regina. Now open 7 days a week. Directions and store hours are available online. BLOODROSES BY KEVYN AUCOIN By Sara Lindsay
Considering the gorgeous colours that autumn brings, it’s time to start a little shift in your makeup bag. There are several trends this season to watch for such as graphic eyeliners, classic shades of red on the lips, and my obsession, glitter on the eyes. A trend that is always beautiful, always warm, and looks good on almost everyone is one that features the classic berry tones. Kevyn Aucoin offers a line of different products in the colour Bloodroses. From plum mascara, which is incredible on blue and green eyes, to an eyeshadow palette of the most gorgeous fall berries, to a range of lip products in the same Bloodroses shade, this series is an easy way to curate a fall monochromatic look for 2017.

My Life As A Hairstylist By Joy Tesch at Visions Salon and Spa When I was a little girl, I loved to cut and style my dolls hair; they were my first clients. As I grew up, I constantly experimented with different styles on my own hair. Looking back at photos, I think some of the looks were beautiful, but quite a few were actually embarrassing. I loved going to school with a different hairstyle. At a young age my mom’s hair went completely grey, so I was tasked with colouring her hair throughout my elementary and high school years. Because of this, she takes credit for my choice of career. When I went to hair school, I imagined life as a stylist to be quite glamorous, consisting of getting ready and looking my best to go to work and playing with people’s hair all day. Once I went to school, I realized there was a lot I would have to learn to get to that point. Not only would I have to master the technicalities of colouring and cutting people’s hair but I would also have to learn how to talk and problem-solve with my clients. It would be my job to take the time to listen to any problems they may have with their hair and fix them. It would also be my job to create a look that would complement their skin tone, and show off their personality. Even once I finished my schooling, it took years of trial and error to really understand people’s hair. I do believe in the importance of always learning and growing. Trends and styles constantly change and it is up to me to stay current. During twelve years of hairstyling, I have learned the value of a great consultation. If you ask the right questions, there shouldn’t be a client that leaves unhappy. Even though I am on my feet for 8-10 hours a day, generally only have a few minutes to eat my meals, and pretty much never get to drink my coffee hot, I can honestly say I love my job. I take pride in my career. When I see a client that leaves happy, I genuinely feel accomplished. Thank you to all my clients that trust me with your beautiful hair. Happy Hair Days! home maintenance
winter checklist by Jessica Forbes
As the lengthy winter months in Saskatchewan approach, it is important to remember to protect your most valuable asset: your home. Christmas shopping, kids’ Christmas concerts, holiday parties and planning hot vacations will take up much more time than you would think, so it is in your best interest to get ahead on the housekeeping items. Preparation now will save you time later, and help you to avoid the last minute panic of winterizing your patio furniture, yard equipment and, most importantly, your home. Neglecting to take winter home maintenance to heart can cost you lofty repair bills for issues such as ice damming, which can cause roof leaks and ruined shingles due to improper ventilation or, seepage into the foundation of your home, which can result in cracks in your foundation and may even cost you the structure of your home. In the event this deficiency creeps up, you may be required to add bracing or a pony wall if it the deflection in your basement walls get severe enough. We must be mindful of the inevitable risk of movement within our soil, being that it is a gumbo-type clay that that also becomes effected by our extreme weather changes throughout the year. At the very least, find a way to prevent the water pooling near your home by ensuring a proper negative grade around your home and pushing the snow away during the winter months. The following is a list of chores to complete prior to winter, as well as things to watch for once Mother Nature hits us with 40 below temperatures and endless bouts of snowstorms. • Safety first! Repair steps and handrails to make them safer in the ice and snow.
your furnace will have to work twice as hard to push out heat. • Check for cracked or worn stripping, and replace with new stripping. If caulking looks worn, remove it and re-caulk with a moisture-resistant product. This will help keep the cold from entering your home, which in turn helps to reduce your heating bill. • Use caulk to seal small gaps near the foundation of your home or around windows. A heavy-duty screen or hardware cloth works well to cover exterior vents, allowing air to escape but preventing critters and bugs from seeking warmth in your home. • Clean out gutters and downspouts to make sure they are not clogged up before the winter freeze. • Winterize your irrigation system by making sure to blow out the underground sprinkler system. • Do not use your fireplace until the chimney has been cleaned of any debris, and watch for creosote build-up. A professional chimney sweep should be done once a year, and you may also want to consider adding a chimney cap. • Remove ice dams on low-pitched roof and gutters. If you decide to ignore ice dams on your roof or gutters, in the spring you may find damage to roof shingles and water penetration into your foundation. • Remove snow and ice from external vents as vents blocked with ice can also cause damage to your roof and will not allow your house to properly and effectively heat and cool.
• Don’t let the pipes freeze. Check for water leaks and fix problems immediately. Wrap water piping in UL-Listed heat tape, and insulate if it is exposed in unheated areas such as garages, crawl spaces or attics. Use only thermostatically-controlled heat tape if your water piping is plastic. • Winterize your yard equipment. Clean and cover patio sets and yard furniture. Store both in a dry place, if possible, to prolong the longevity of these items and prevent replacing them sooner than you anticipated. • Replace furnace filters to keep your furnace running efficiently. You need to change the filters every three months. If you fail to do this,

5 TRICKS FOR GREAT TRAVEL PHOTOS ON YOUR SMARTPHONE
We live in the digital age, where being able to capture and document a vacation on social media has become the preferred way to remember and share a special holiday. It’s also easier than ever to do so, as many people already carry a quality camera in their pocket in their smartphone. I often find myself shooting both photos and video on my compact and easy-to-access smartphone rather than lugging around my DLSR. A big camera requires transferring files to my computer or swapping memory cards between my camera and phone before I can upload online, which is considerably more work. Cell phones are easier to use and offer great quality – especially with dual cameras and more sophisticated settings to ensure every important moment is captured. Here are five great tricks to help you get the most out of your smartphone while on the road. 1. Familiarize yourself with the camera settings. The most important tip is to familiarize yourself with the smartphone camera settings. Sit down and spend time playing with all of the camera options. Go through each menu in the camera app and review what the phone is capable of and how to quickly access each option. Not only will it save you time when you want to snap a photo, but it will make it easier when capturing creative moments because you know what setting to use.
2. Use burst mode for motion. Most cameras offer a burst mode to snap a quick succession of photos in a few seconds. This is a great feature to learn how to use when you want to capture fast moments that might otherwise turn out blurry. I use this feature to take up to a dozen photos of a moment, then afterwards I can go through and select the one that turned out the best. 3. Shoot on the rear camera for better quality. Most smartphones have both a front and rear facing camera. While front-facing cameras are great for selfies, they don’t offer as high an image quality which means pictures won’t look as sharp. When possible, shoot only on the rear camera, even if it requires asking someone to snap a photo for you. 4. Shoot in the highest resolution possible. It will take up more space in your smartphone’s memory bank, but shooting on the highest resolution possible will capture more detail in your photos and create a better quality image. If you’re really tech-savvy, some phones now offer the ability to shoot in manual and produce RAW photo files for editing. 5. Keep the lenses clean. This is a simple trick to ensure photos aren’t faded or blurry: carry a small lens cleaner in your cell phone case to wipe the camera lenses. caramel apple bar
Halloween is quickly approaching so it’s time to start planning those costumes and stocking up on Halloween candy. Do your kids still go trick-or-treating? My son is 5 years old, so last year was the first year he was excited to go out collecting candy. Even though he doesn’t like candy (he certainly doesn’t get that from me), he’s counting down the days until Halloween so he can dress up in a costume and go out with some friends. Whether you have young children at home, teenagers, or even just adults planning a Halloween party, everyone can enjoy this Caramel Apple Bar.
I hope you have a sweet tooth because there are a lot of sweets to enjoy in a Caramel Apple Bar. To start with, you’ll need a lot of apples. I think any kind of apples go great with caramel, so buy a variety of apples for your guests to choose from. For this party, I set it up so each guest could create a caramel apple to take home, but there were plenty of sliced apples as “taste testers” so guests could enjoy some treats at the party and try out different toppings before creating their own. The caramel is sticky so make sure you set out plenty of napkins or wet wipes for hands.
For the caramel, I used the Kraft Caramels – simply just unwrap and microwave for 30 to 60 seconds. The caramel does harden quickly so you may want to add a tablespoon or two of water to the mix. Make sure the caramel is in a bowl that you can easily reheat in the microwave. Get creative with toppings. For this Caramel Apple Bar I included: • Smarties • mini Oreos • mini chocolate chip cookies • sprinkles • crushed graham crackers • mini marshmallows • melted chocolate (Hershey’s milk chocolate chips) • mini candy bars

There are so many different kinds of toppings you could include like nuts (if no one at the party has allergies), shredded coconut, dried fruit, and more. If you visit Pinterest and type “candy apple” in the search bar, you’ll find loads of ideas. Don’t forget spoons to scoop out the toppings.
wrap them in wrapping paper for a fun decorative background. It’s a great way to decorate the party table area without having to pin or tape anything to your walls. I hope you have a spooktacular Halloween filled with laughter, great memories, and lots of candy!
For the candy apple sticks, you can find the lollipop sticks at the Bulk Barn or Michaels. I found some plastic candy apple sticks that looked like twigs at Michaels. I then found little paper liners that guests could put their candy apples in to take home. Topping caramel apples can be a messy project, so you may want to have some pie plates handy for the guests to use to catch the mess. For decorating this party, I used three different heights of candlesticks, paper lanterns, glitter pumpkins and feather decorations. I used wooden trays and boxes, metal trays and mason jars to display all the toppings. My favourite place to shop for tablecloths is at the local fabric store. I can’t sew but I just use two metres of fabric as a tablecloth (no sewing required). You’ll find a lot of different prints to choose from there, plus, you can wash them and reuse them for another party. For party backdrops, I always use the foam boards from the dollar store. You can use them plain (they come in white or black) or
