Note from our Editor This month is all about preparation. It seems most of our spare time is taken up by winterizing our vehicles, cleaning up the lawn, unpacking warmer clothes and footwear, or starting Christmas shopping. We are in a constant state of getting ready for what is coming next: winter. We know that it is coming, and we know it cannot be avoided, so it’s time to start looking at all the wonderful things it holds. I wish we could hang on to those crisp autumn days where wearing a light sweater is just enough, and the sun doesn’t go to sleep too soon, but I have also learned to appreciate the mornings when you wake up and the hoar frost has painted a scene so picturesque it takes your breath away. I welcome the sunny afternoons when the fresh snow is almost blinding, but perfectly fluffy enough for making snow angles or going tobogganing. I happily embrace the evenings when instead of enjoying BBQ and beer, you dig into a steaming bowl of homemade stew and later watch a movie, cuddled up on the couch with a hot chocolate. It’s all about perspective. You can prepare to be cantankerous and unenthusiastic about the upcoming months, or you can set your mind on a more optimistic path. Prepare to be excited! FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 11, NOVEMBER 2016
Known for her spirited optimism and dogged determination, Heather Abbey has weathered more than her fair share of setbacks on her journey to becoming an internationally recognized leader in social enterprise and entrepreneurship. During moments when others would have thrown their hands up in defeat, Heather persevered. Today, she is proof that persistence really does pay off. “The absolute best piece of business advice I ever received came from my mentor, Josh Fine from Manitobah Mukluks. He told me: ‘Create what you want to see, and don’t let anyone stop you.’” In life and in business, it’s clear Heather has taken this advice to heart. Even through the toughest of trials, she remains a determined entrepreneur, mentor, and businesswoman, with a view to empower and encourage indigenous youth and artisans. “Sure, there have been plenty of times that I’ve been in bed with ice cream, thinking to myself that I can’t do this, that entrepreneurship is not for me,” she confesses light-heartedly. “Sometimes I wonder if I’m even making a difference, but then I’ll get an e-mail, a phone call, or a letter and I’ll realize that every kid, every artist I can help makes it all worth it. Now I keep a folder of all the messages I receive from parents, students, and artisans. ” Like many of the youth she now mentors, Heather, too, comes from a troubled past. Originally from Little Pine First Nation—a reserve community nestled between North Battleford and Lloydminster—she was adopted out to a family in Regina from birth. Upon reconnecting with her birth mother decades later, Heather learned that she was put up for adoption not because she was not wanted, but because her mother recognized she could not provide for her daughter, and saw adoption as a viable way to boost Heather’s chances at a better life.
unfortunately she made decisions that lead her off the right path. I felt caught somewhere in the middle; I didn’t know where to go.” In a push to “be an adult,” Heather left home and changed schools at seventeen. During this time, she was “poor but happy,” juggling full-time studies against a full-time job that not only covered her rent, but also kept her watered and fed. Despite facing significant financial and emotional struggle, Heather kept a smile on her face and fostered connections with individuals and organizations she believed were a good fit for her skills and drive. Heather shared that, more than once, she was forced to decide between spending the last of her money on bus fare or on a coffee with business leaders that she hoped to learn from, and she almost always chose the latter. For her, these experiences were formative in that they taught her how to observe, understand, and appreciate the world around her. “Early on, I learned to look for opportunity,” she explains. “I always saw hope. Because I couldn’t afford to continue my education after high school, I chose to learn from my experiences in the community. And suddenly I found myself around all these driven people who were making something of themselves, of their lives.” Heather’s opportunism, coupled with her tenacity, has served her well over the years. From building online communities to delivering engaging keynotes and engineering community initiatives, she takes great pride in supporting and serving the people of Saskatchewan. She is now an accomplished event planner, the creative designer behind Kiowa Sage Apparel, and the founder of ShopIndig (www.shopindig.ca), an online platform for local indigenous artisans to showcase and sell their works to a global audience. By harnessing the power of an ever-evolving digital space,
I am very proud of where I’m from, and I speak out about it every opportunity I get. “I was angry for a long time, but I’ve since come to understand why people do the things they do,” she says. “I have nothing but love for my family and the community in Little Pine. I am very proud of where I’m from, and I speak out about it every opportunity I get.” Growing up, few people had the same impact on Heather as her adopted sister, Lori-Lynn. She described feeling all at once enamored with her sister’s carefree nature and concerned about some of the choices she was making. Following Following LoriLynn’s untimely death almost a decade ago, Heather struggled to find purpose and meaning as the disconnect she felt from her Aboriginal culture widened. “Lori-Lynn was a pivotal figure in my life. She was so smart, but
Heather has endeared herself to the community and created a vibrant, flourishing culture for indigenous people to support and celebrate one another. Heather would eventually go on to live out her dream of postsecondary education, studying intercultural leadership and business administration. However, while pregnant, complications forced Heather into bed rest and gave her no choice but to prioritize her health over her studies. Rather than submit to a sedentary, complacent lifestyle, though, she began to indulge another dream: entrepreneurship. “While I was resting, I spent a lot of time on Facebook. I began asking important questions to others through my statuses — mainly about business and entrepreneurship—and within a year FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 11, NOVEMBER 2016 | 7
I found myself with more than 1,700 Facebook friends, 75% of whom were indigenous artists.” ShopIndig was created in response to Heather’s discovery that most artisans—indigenous or otherwise—face three barriers to market entry: insufficient funds to attend and participate in trade shows; lack of access to transportation; and a shortage of knowledge, resources and support about the “business” side of business. “Many artists don’t know what’s required to create and market a product in a way that makes a sale,” she explains. “I know for me starting out, I didn’t know about so many different processes that could have made my journey easier. So when I figured out these three problems, I reached out to my online community and asked, ‘If I created a website where you could market your products to the world, would you use it?’ The answer, of course, was yes.” Since its initial launch more than five years ago, ShopIndig has been touted as “the Native Etsy” and continues to evolve in response to market demand and a changing digital landscape. Heather is currently refining her second website, and looking to populate it with Indigenous goods by mid November. True to her character, Heather has taken an active role in the business’s evolution. To date, she has applied for and participated in nearly a dozen local, national, and international business competitions. Most recently, Heather received a mentorship package through the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority’s SOAR program; recipients gain access to an assortment of business development resources and services with the aim of increasing Aboriginal representation in Saskatchewan’s local business economy. On Monday, November 14, Heather will also take part in the 2016 Pitch Party, a celebration of small business and entrepreneurship headed by the University of Saskatchewan’s Wilson Centre, where she will pitch ShopIndig.ca to a crowd of 750 attendees and W. Brett Wilson. Outside of her business enterprises, Heather is also the driving force behind a collection of community and advocacy initiatives targeting aspiring Aboriginal entrepreneurs and youth. From the ShopIndig StartUp Challenge to the ShopIndig School Challenge—a project dedicated to providing underprivileged youth backpacks filled with clothes and basic school supplies—Heather is always innovating new ways to emphasize the importance of community and resilience. “I have seen my own mentors like Kendal Netmaker of Neechie Gear, smash so many glass ceilings, and I want to inspire others to do the same,” she says. “It’s not just about being an Aboriginal entrepreneur, or being a woman… it’s about doing what you love.” Heather’s newest addition to her growing line-up of community events is the ShopIndig Showcase and Tradeshow, taking place on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 at Sas-

all-star line-up of guests speakers including Suicide Squad star Adam Beach, international designer Sho Sho Esquiro, and Top Chef Canada finalist Rich Francis.
After repeatedly observing a significant underrepresentation of indigenous artisans at trade shows and markets around Saskatchewan, Heather was moved to act.
For Heather, the process of transforming an idea into a reality is an endlessly rewarding pursuit, one that honours her cultural heritage and, ultimately, inspires others to do the same.
“I was at a point where I wasn’t seeing many Indigenous vendor booth at the tradeshows I was setting up at,” she explains. “At one of the last tradeshows I attended, I had quite a bit of time to think and to observe. I started to wonder what it would be to attend a large-scale Indigenous tradeshow that was put together well and appealed to a mass market. This lead to daydreaming, which naturally lead to planning, and before I knew it I had decided I would be the one to do it and make it happen!”
“It’s like everything is all coming together the way it should: in a celebration of indigenous culture and business.”
Heather has structured the event in a way that reduces, if not removes, the three barriers to entry she identified at the beginning of her foray into entrepreneurship. Strict budgeting, a tiered service system, and cost-cutting measures allow her to offer vendors and attendees affordable booth and ticket prices, respectively.

Although there is comfort in knowing how much your investment is expected to earn each year and return in principal at maturity, what you don’t know is how much purchasing power that money will retain. That’s why it can be important to place a portion of your investment dollars in growth objective investments, which typically outpace inflation, so you have the potential to keep up with the cost of living and even keep ahead of it. When diversifying, it’s important to remember that not only should you diversify in different typesPMS of investments, you should also diversify within each type of investment. 5535 For example, when choosing stocks for growth potential, don’t limit yourself to one stock or even one type of stock, such as consumer goods or utility stock. Instead, spread your dollars among a number of stocks.

Which mix of investments is right for you? Which investments should you choose? That depends on your needs and goals. There is no “one size fits all” investment plan.

Proper diversification requires serious thought and takes time to implement. If you need help determining which investments are best-suited to your needs, seek the help of an investment professional. He or she can explain what types of investments are available and how they would fit in your portfolio. Black We may no longer gather eggs in baskets, but there’s still a wealth of wisdom in that simple statement: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

Unlike eggs, which all basically look and taste alike, each investment is truly unique, and each is designed to fill a certain need. Income objective investments -- such as bonds and income mutual funds -- are designed to provide a regular stream of income to help meet monthly expenses. Growth objective investments -- such as individual stocks and equity mutual funds -- are designed to let your investment grow in value and, thus, try to stay ahead of inflation’s erosive powers. Growth-and-income objective investments are designed to offer both income and growth. All three types of investments can be included in a well-balanced portfolio.
Of course, knowing you should diversify your investments and actually diversifying them are two different things. Sometimes, investors fall into the habit of relying on income investments such as bonds alone. Unfortunately, limiting yourself to income investments can undermine your money’s long-term purchasing power.

In yesteryear, this sage advice was meant to protect you (and your eggs) should some unfortunate mishap befall you between the house and the chicken coop. Today, when applied to investing, these words of wisdom are intended to help protect you and your investments against mishaps. Here’s how.
When you choose a variety of investments, it’s called diversification. One of the greatest benefits of diversification is the protection it can help to provide. No investment performs well under all conditions. In fact, certain investments can “counterbalance” one another. For example, bonds typically perform well when the stock market declines, while stocks typically perform strongly when the bond market declines. Owning both helps cushion you against the market’s ups and downs. However, remember that diversification does not protect against market loss.

Remember the old saying, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?” Today, “gathering eggs” typically consists of stopping by the store to pick up a dozen Grade A’s. However, the wisdom of the sentiment still applies, especially when it comes to investing.

SMITH & CULT By Sara Lindsay
I was first introduced to Smith & Cult and its beautiful nail varnish with its exclusive 8-Free formula. It is formulated without Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Xylene, Ethyl Tosylamide or Triphenyl Phosphate. This formula has a beautiful finish and a very long-lasting formula, as well as a fabulous range of colours. When Smith & Cult recently introduced its cosmetic line, I was thrilled to find that the makeup also has incredible formulas. We’re excited to have now launched it in store. The eye shadow palettes deliver gorgeous, full-pigmented colours and are of course presented in the stunning packaging that Smith & Cult is known for. The line also includes two beautiful matte lip colours, three liquid liners that have amazing felt tipped applicators, and a mascara that has lashes reaching new heights! Pop in any time and we’d be happy to demonstrate this beautiful line and show you just how gorgeous it is!

ICE CAVING IN ICELAND
A tiny island between the North Atlantic and Arctic ocean, Iceland is a geographically striking country becoming more popular with tourists. With dramatic landscapes ranging from violent volcanoes to retreating glaciers, it’s an otherworldly destination that offers endless adventures for those who seek it. As an avid adventure traveller, I couldn’t wait to experience all the country had to offer. So I booked a cheap flight out of Edmonton and spent 18 days in the middle of winter driving more than 4000 kilometres around the country. A benefit to travelling during the off-season is the possibility of going ice caving. In southeastern Iceland, and despite the cooler seasonal temperatures, the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier is slowly receding. Swapping my four-wheel drive Subaru Legacy rental car for a kitted-out super-Jeep with jacked-up tires half as tall as I am, I joined a tour group to explore this outlet of the Vatnajökull glacier. Strapping on a safety helmet, a pair of crampons for grip on the ice, and my camera, my small group and I hiked the short distance through the snow up to the high walls of the glacier and to my first experience inside an ice cave.

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 11, NOVEMBER 2016
I was stunned by the undulating crystal facets of ice surrounding me. The colours of blue rippled into variations of navy, indigo, cerulean and sapphire, shifting hues based on the angle I viewed them at. Thanks to Iceland’s constantly changing weather patterns, the cloudy and snowy day enhanced the blue coloured ice in the cave. Our guide, who has led tours on the glacier for several years, described the various shades of blue with the day’s lighting as the most amazing colours you can get. As a testament to the luck of our window of weather and on cue to his statement, snow began falling from the sky. It
sprinkled in through a moulin - or a hole in the ice created by melting water - to dust the rocks and ice below. Although frozen, the hollowed out ice cave (and glacier) is more mobile than expected. A week prior, the same cave we entered was named the Broken Blue as several icebergs had collapsed and broken off from the glacier. But, as a result of the glacier’s constantly changing state, the ice cave opened up, allowing us to be the first to visit. The tour company renamed the cave the Sapphire Ceiling for its brilliant colouring. With new caves every year, it’s always a different and unique adventure for those who choose to travel Iceland in the dark winter months. After spending more than an hour capturing photos and video inside the cave, we walked along the edge of the glacier admiring the immense size of it before we headed back to the super-Jeep for another bumpy ride back to the Ring Road.

Winter Hair Tips By Joy Tesch at Visions Salon and Spa Winter is officially here! Following are a few hair care tips to keep your hair looking healthy and shiny all winter long. I am sure you have noticed that nowadays everything feels dry. Your skin is flakey, your lips are chapped and your hair is needing moisture! Outside it is cold and desiccate and the indoor heating sucks any type of moisture that may be left in the air. Using a leave-in conditioner and deep moisturizing/hydrating masks will replenish the moisture in your hair. If your hair remains dry and brittle throughout the winter, you will notice more breakage and split ends. Hydrate/moisturize as much as possible! With the dry and cold conditions, you will probably notice your hair looking dull and limp. Make sure to come in to the salon for regular hair coloring and cut services. By darkening and richening your color, you will create more shine to the hair. Paired up with a good trim, it will keep your ends feeling healthy and your hair feeling alive. Make sure to use products for colour treated hair in order to revitalize and stay radiant. Do not go out with wet hair! Exposing wet hair to cold temperatures may freeze it and damage it, eventually causing breakage. It is a great idea to protect your hair from the weather by tucking it underneath your scarf and hat. The less exposure to weather elements, the better. Avoid washing your hair too often. Over washing your hair will strip it of its natural oils, which you especially need in the colder months. Try to extend the period between your washes as much as possible, and use dry shampoo in between to keep your hair looking fresh. Don’t forget to use a hydrating conditioner each time! To avoid a crazy static hair, a simple trick is to keep a regular anti-static laundry dryer sheet with you. Lightly swipe it over the flyaways and enjoy your static-free hairdo. How neat is that? Simple and effective. Happy Hair Days! Photo credit: Shot by: K. Jade Wilde Model: Selina Siwy Hair: Joy Tesch Hair Make-up: Beautify with Alina

oreo truffles The holiday season is quickly approaching and between gift shopping, dinner preparation, holiday parties and school concerts, there isn’t a lot of time left to do all that holiday baking. These Oreo Truffles are incredible easy to make, and they are a great addition to a holiday party dessert table, or as a hostess gift for a dinner party. These Oreo Truffles are best stored in the freezer and there’s no need to thaw them before serving. They won’t last long after coming out of the freezer anyway! Ingredients: •
1 package (300g) Oreo Original cookies (not just Oreo crumbs, you’ll need the cookie filling as well)
•
1 package (227g) regular cream cheese
•
1 package (225g) Baker’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate
•
sprinkles
Directions: 1.
Using a food processor, crush the Oreo cookies into a crumbled mixture.
2.
In a large bowl, mix cream cheese with cookie crumbs.
3.
Form the mixture into 1-inch truffle balls and place truffles on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.
4.
Place the truffles in the freezer for 30 minutes.
5.
Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in the microwave for about 30 minutes. You’ll want it to be completely melted, but not really hot.
6.
Dip the truffles into the chocolate using a fork to scoop the truffles out of the chocolate. Gently tap the fork on the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
7.
Roll the truffle in sprinkles or simply add a few sprinkles to the top of the truffle (you’ll want to work on one truffle at a time as the chocolate will harden quickly).
This recipe will make about 24 truffles.

ANEX INTERIORS
Regina’s Professional Home Redecorators by Jessica Forbes
This month I would like to feature a local Regina business that offers beautiful decor and professional advice on staging and redecorating. This is a very valuable feature in the real estate world because with the proper staging techniques and advice it will help sellers to obtain a higher sale price. For buyers, this will help them transform their new property to showcase its greatest potential. The impact staging has on a property is exponential and is worth completing to gain a top sale price and complete that sale in a much shorter time frame. Another reason to look into this service is merely for your own enjoyment and for brightening your own space!
As tempting as it is to start decorating a room by picking out that perfect cushion, sofa or paint colour, we always advise clients to hold off until a rug is chosen first. We say it over and over because it’s true: the rug makes the room. It’s so much easier (and more successful) to coordinate those other elements with your rug, rather than the other way around. Another common mistake people make is to choose a rug that isn’t big enough for the space. An undersized rug makes your room appear smaller and disconnected. When in doubt, go for a size or two larger. It will unify your furniture and make the room appear larger than it really is.
Here is a sneak peak of some great tips that Scott and Jericho can offer through their service.
Remember, decorating your home should be FUN! Don’t get preoccupied in matching colours and patterns exactly. The most beautiful rooms are beautiful because they contain a great mix of interesting objects and artwork. Your room should coordinate, it doesn’t have to match.
Most often, clients looking for decorating advice will already have some great pieces of artwork or furniture in the room, but the problem often lies in the placement of things and too much clutter. Sometimes, all it takes is a professional eye and an hour or two of making a few simple changes to your existing layout to make the space look and feel new again. This service doesn’t cost a lot, and often with a few new accessories added in, you’ll be amazed at the transformation. You’ll be proud and excited to have some guests drop by – probably even that same night!
If all this seems a bit overwhelming, give Anex Interiors a call at 306-546-2639 or stop by the store at 1118 Broad St at 5th Ave. Scott or Jericho are always eager to help.
Remember, the right accessories – colours, shapes and textures – are equally important as the furniture itself. Cushions, flowers, photos, and art are the things that truly make a house your home, and don’t need to be complicated or expensive. Your home should be a reflection of who you are, and not a copy of something you saw on Pinterest. With winter on its way, life moves indoors. An area rug will add warmth, colour and vibrancy to any room, especially those with hardwood floors. Hardwood is beautiful, but it can be cold and barren. Anex has Regina’s largest selection of area rugs. Guaranteed we can find one that will fit your design scheme, your lifestyle and your budget perfectly.
