Note from our Guest Editor
Ah February. The month of love. What is your Valentine’s Day style? Do you like a night out on the town or a quiet evening at home alone with your love? Are you dating and looking for love? Or are you the type that could care less? This month’s issue has some great ideas for Valentine’s Day. For those looking to add a little bling to their jewelry collection, my advice is to innocently leave this issue visible for your spouse to see and open to a page with some Hillberg & Berk jewelry on it. Or you could just tell your significant other that he is supporting a very notable cause - it’s true! Need more info on how Hillberg & Berk supports women? Check out Jessica Reimer’s feature story on local jewelry phenom, Rachel Mielke. Sarah Linday’s column was chock full of advice for those who are looking for love or simply looking to spice up their look on Valentine’s Day. Add some shimmer with a great lip colour or pick a perfume that cannot be resisted. Her suggestions this month are golden. But, my personal favorite (which also comes from Sarah and speaks to my Vday style ) is the suggestion that doing something nice for someone shouldn’t be limited to those you know, or exist only on Valentine’s Day. Buy a stranger a coffee, make someone’s day. Great advice. XOXO

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 3 ISSUE 2, FEBRUARY 2014
There’s no place like home for Rachel Mielke, designer and founder of internationally-acclaimed jewellery company Hillberg & Berk. Whether she is sourcing silver in Bali or accessorizing celebrities in Los Angeles, Mielke loves returning to the comfort and familiarity of her Regina home. “I’ve never considered moving away,” says the native Regina resident. “Saskatchewan’s economy, supportive business community and people have helped me to achieve success. When I’m asked why I don’t move to bigger centres like Vancouver or Toronto, I tell them that I believe [Hillberg & Berk] is successful precisely because we strive to do things that are outside the norm.” Mielke’s journey to success has been a lifetime in the making and would not be possible without her undisputed passion, hard work and dedication. When Mielke started her business in 2004, the luxury jewellery line was originally named Urban Pearl Accessories. In 2007, she elected to change the company name to Hillberg & Berk in honour of her grandmother, Hilda Bergman, and miniature Pinscher, Berkeley. 2014 marks the business’ tenth anniversary. “Time has gone by so quickly,” says Mielke, who now employs a staff of 22 women at Hillberg & Berk’s flagship outlet in Regina. “It doesn’t feel like work though. It’s fun and I love it. Every day I know I can count on a new challenge and a new opportunity.” Growing up, Mielke involved herself in a number of creative pursuits but never imagined that what started as a hobby would so quickly evolve into an international brand and her status as one of Canada’s most successful designers and female entrepreneurs. “I came by creativity honestly,” shares Mielke, crediting her love of design to her father, also an entrepreneur. “No matter the project, my dad always wanted to design something amazing and unique. He taught me work ethic, attention to detail and to always take pride in the work I did.” After high school, Mielke applied to study Interior Design at Mount Royal College in Calgary, AB; when her application was rejected, she chose to complete a degree in Business Administration from the University of Regina instead. During her studies, jewellery making was little more than a pleasant distraction from busy student life. At the insistence of her friends, however, Mielke set up a booth to showcase her designs at a Regina convention. She was surprised by the volume of orders that poured in; they have not stopped since.
Share Financial Lessons With Your Children On Family Day Many people across Canada are celebrating Family Day today – a chance to spend precious time with your loved ones and to reflect on how much they mean to you. If you’re a parent – or a grandparent – you might want to take the opportunity to share some important financial lessons with your young ones. After all, you’ve probably learned many lessons and have valuable wisdom to share about the basics of saving and investing. Passing all that knowledge along might make a big difference to your kids’ financial well-being in the future. Here are a few tips for getting your youngster off to a good financial start in life. Teach them how to save – Many parents give children an allowance, but that should also come with an understanding of the difference between saving and spending. You might want to show them how to divide their money into two pools – one for spending and the other to be put into a bank account. If children earn extra cash by babysitting, mowing lawns or doing other chores, you could offer to match whatever funds they keep out of the spending pile and in the savings account. That’ll motivate them to save more. Introduce them to the fun of picking stocks – Children are often fascinated by the idea of owning shares of a company. And the more they understand about stocks, the more interested they become. Consider playing a family “stock-picking” game. Everyone in the family could choose a diverse basket of 10 stocks to follow for a year. Then award a prize to the person whose stock portfolio has performed best. This is a good opportunity to teach the basics of stock analysis, by examining the factors that caused some investments to perform better than others. And don’t underestimate your children’s ability to grasp fairly sophisticated concepts. Children love to learn. You might even take the stock market game a step further and give shares – but make sure they’re quality businesses with good prospects. You also need to be aware that there could be potential tax implications to this.* Lead by example – Show your children how you save and invest. Explain PMS 5535 how you saved to make a big purchase, like your car or house. And explain to them how you’re investing in their futures, such as for their postsecondary education. Stress key concepts such as setting objectives and making regular investments. These kinds of lessons can last a lifetime, equipping your children or grandchildren with the tools they need to become smart savers and investors.

““We seek to empower and support women in everything we do ... we want to create a meaningful culture and community through Hillberg & Berk. This is the “why” of our business.” “I believe you don’t ever feel like you’ve ‘made it’,” she confesses. “You set a goal and when you reach that place, you recognize there’s something new you want to strive for.” Mielke affiliated herself early on with the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI), a non-profit organization designed to promote and nurture Canadian designers and fashion entrepreneurs. She made such an impression with the TFI staff that her designs were recommended for a luxury gifting lounge during the 2008 Oscars awards show in Hollywood, CA. “The whole experience provided [Hillberg & Berk] with great exposure and credibility,” says Mielke, who returned home with an impressive roster of celebrities donning her jewellery and an appearance by one of her pieces on the Oscars Red Carpet. Shortly thereafter she was selected to appear on the CBC series Dragons’ Den, where former panelist and accomplished philanthropist W. Brett Wilson made her an offer she 10 |

could not refuse. “Brett’s investment allowed me to grow my staff, my inventory and my brand,” says Mielke. Wilson’s knowledge and wide network of professionals make him a valuable partner, as interest and demand for Hillberg & Berk’s products continues to rise. Year over year, the Hillberg & Berk brand grows to heights Mielke only dreamed of when she started making jewellery nearly a decade ago. In 2013, Hillberg & Berk generated national media attention when Saskatchewan Lieutenant-Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield invited Mielke to design a piece of jewellery to be presented to Her Majesty the Queen during a visit to Buckingham Palace. The result was a one-of-a-kind asymmetrical floral brooch incorporating Madagascar tourmaline, 18kt white gold, diamonds and a pearl in the flower’s center. Mielke selected the tourmaline stone for its sparkling pink and purple hues, and
chose a floral design for the way it reiterated the strength and femininity associated with such a beloved royal figure. The brooch effectively blends classic detailing with sparkle, the signature of most Hillberg & Berk pieces.
pieces, each designed to accommodate the central stone’s colour, shape and size. Moreover, Mielke offers customers the opportunity to say they now share something in common with the Queen.
“I was given complete creative liberty for this piece and spent countless hours researching [Her Majesty’s] existing jewellery,” explains Mielke. “I wanted to create something that would be easily incorporated into her repertoire, something she would love to wear and pass down.”
The celebrity and attention that flowed from her “fit for a Queen” designs also allowed Mielke to share her brand’s mission and values with an expanded audience.
“My team and I knew the date and time the gift was being presented, so we were all on pins and needles,” she says. “When [the Lieutenant-Governor] contacted me, she told me the Queen gasped when she opened the box and promised us a photo when she wore it for the first time. We were completely blown away by it all.” This honourable opportunity led Mielke to launch the Legacy collection, with some pieces still available through the Hillberg & Berk website (www.hillbergandberk.com) and at the Regina flagship store. The Legacy collection consists of 160
“We seek to empower and support women in everything we do,” explains Mielke. “From advertising to look books, to the types of women we select for our campaigns, we want to create a meaningful culture and community through Hillberg & Berk. This is the “why” of our business.” The company aims to assist women in feeling confident and maintaining an optimistic outlook on life. Her luxury jewellery pieces are crafted with practicality, durability and individuality in mind. While Mielke herself certainly embodies these qualities, she devotes much of her time and energy to building and strengthening communities of empowered women on both local and global platforms.

Travel is an important aspect of Mielke’s personal philosophy and business brand. Her quest for unique and special gem stones, paired with her ever-evolving design visions, has taken her to diverse and richly cultural regions around the world in order to incorporate their craftsmanship into her collections. “It’s inspiring to see the impact our company has on other countries,” says Mielke, whose business has stimulated local economies in countries including India and Indonesia. “I consider every opportunity to travel a blessing and a reminder of the struggles of others. We are fortunate to live in a country like Canada and I am thankful every single day for all that I have.” In the spirit of sharing inspirational stories, Mielke selects one woman with a poignant message to represent each of her jewellery collections. Berk will formally launch their spring and summer collection, La Sirena, the Spanish term for ‘mermaid.’ The collection is saturated with vibrant blues and aquamarines, the brand’s staple Swarovski sparkle, and both gold and rose gold to generate a very luxurious resort feel. Representing La Sirena is Brianne Urzada, a young woman from Rhein, SK who was diagnosed last year with a rare form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer originating in the lymph system. Mielke was touched by Urzada’s story and knew she would be the perfect match for a line focused on transformation and rebirth. “Brianne has journeyed through cancer with grace, dignity and positivity. I believe her experiences will resonate with many women who are facing or have faced challenges, cancer or otherwise.” Shortly after completing her Bachelor of Education from the University of Regina and at the young age of 23, Urzada dis-
covered a lump on her right collarbone. A biopsy and battery of tests confirmed her cancer diagnosis and she began a rigorous treatment schedule of chemotherapy soon after. “I was a bit more public with my cancer,” says Urzada, a strong believer in authenticity. “I would not have been true to myself if I tried to hide it. My involvement with the [La Sirena] campaign has truly been an honour because although I can’t be a spokesperson for every woman with cancer, I am able to display that confidence and change is possible, even through your weakest time.” Urzada flew to Mexico less than a month after her final chemotherapy treatment for a 14-hour underwater photo shoot Mielke describes as “the pinnacle” of her campaigns to date. Urzada is currently enjoying a healthy recovery and looks forward to seeing the final La Sirena look book. “Rachel and her team are truly inspiring. They designed a beautiful, jewelled cap for me to wear that helped me to embrace the physical changes I’ve experienced. I felt like a princess at the photo shoot and am very confident in the final product,” says Urzada, who lost her long, blonde hair during treatment.
“I never resent coming to work because I’ve learned to strike a balance,” she explains. “In the beginning phases of a business, this can be tough or even impossible. What’s important to remember though, is that success is not about a skill set, but a mindset. If you persevere and stay true to what’s most important to you, you will succeed.” When she is not traveling overseas or speaking at conferences and post-secondary facilities across Canada, Mielke can be found at Hillberg & Berk’s head office in Regina or at home with her husband, 14 year-old stepson, Caleb, and one year-old daughter, Lauran. Her jewellery is carried in approximately 50 locations Canada-wide and is also available via the company’s newly-refurbished website (www.hillbergandberk. com). To learn more about the La Sirena collection and for other promotional updates and events, follow Rachel and her team on Twitter @hillbergberk, Instagram @hillbergberk, and on Facebook at facebook.com/hillbergandberk.
“The company as a whole is always growing and adapting, looking for something to make their products better and their philosophy stronger. I am honoured to be a part of that.” Some of the proceeds from the La Sirena collection will be provided to Look Good, Feel Better (www.lgfb.ca/), an organization dedicated to assisting women with cancer. Workshops are available across Canada and offer not only cosmetic tips and techniques, but also bring together women that are facing similar, significant physical and psychological changes.

“We believe in and want to support this worthy organization and the women who access their services,” says Mielke. “Our look book photos follow a small portion of Brianne’s journey but they also exemplify the greater journey shared by all women undergoing a transformation.” Despite her business’ transformation into a famed Canadian luxury brand, one thing remains unchanged: Mielke’s commitment to her family. When asked for the best piece of business advice she has received to date, Mielke explained that during the early stages of the investment process with business partner Wilson, he stressed the importance of always putting herself and her family first.

based in yorkton, Willey admits that even at the time it was a plum role for a student newly graduated with a diploma in Journalism. And despite being her first position, it was one that set the standard and gave her a taste for communications that would lead her on an upward career path that included Chief of Communications for the Government of Saskatchewan and most recently the Director of Communications, Marketing and Alumni Relations for the University of Regina. While her trajectory has been progressive with each new position and educational achievement, her path, says Willey, is one she would say has been more organic in nature than a targeted strategy. “i was always receptive to opportunities that evolved, or for which i was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time,” says Willey. “every new position brought change. i never closed doors to the future.” While Willey says it was difficult to leave positions and colleagues as part of her pursuit of new and interesting opportunities, it was also incredible to have been a part of so many different organizations with so many talented people, each of whom contributed in their own way to her own growth and capabilities. in the rapidly changing world of communications says Willey, being able to grow and adapt is vital to success.
photo credit: Don Hall in the busy, fast-paced world of communications Anna Willey knows one thing for certain; to be successful as a communicator one must always be learning. A self-directed piece of advice she has taken to heart throughout her vast and varied 38 year career and currently, as the head of her own communications consulting firm, Total Communications Services ltd. Having started her career in 1976 as an information Officer for Parkland Regional College, (then Parkland Community College)

“Communications is a constantly evolving profession which has definitely advanced over the years,” says Willey. “The advent of technology and specialized disciplines within the profession are examples of that.” Having witnessed the introduction of fax machines, cell phones and shared digital networks into the workplace, Willey believes the more a communication professional can go with the flow and adapt to their ever-changing surroundings, the more they’ll get out of the profession and the more effective they will be. While Willey acknowledges that the elements and tools that make up a communication portfolio today can at times be challenging, they have also created opportunities to ensure
more capability of delivering messages in an audience’s preferred manner of receipt.
difficult it can be for those in communication roles to secure that time away.
“it all adds to the strategic mix that communications professionals have at their disposal,” says Willey.
“i want to be able to offer support to individuals who may be seeking a professional to back them up over the short term so they can enroll in classes, explore development opportunities or even if plan a few weeks’ relief from a hectic work place to enjoy their young, growing families,” explains Willey.
To stay on top of that mix, Willey’s second piece of advice to newcomers to the profession is to join a professional association or network. “i’m a strong believer in the value of professional networks,” says Willey. “i would encourage all young professionals to get involved and to be active in the organizations they are members of.” Willey is most active in and has derived the most professional and personal satisfaction from the international Association of Business Communicators (iABC). With more than 14,000 members worldwide, being able to work with individuals from around the globe, each of whom bring with them a different perspective, is something she finds fascinating. “it’s been remarkable to be able to learn from colleagues literally from around the world in terms of best practises and current trends. Valentine beauty By Sara Lindsay
Although I think it’s the little thoughtful things every day throughout the year that are most important, showing your appreciation and acknowledging a loved one on Valentine’s Day is fun and romantic. Whether you plan to gussy up for a special date or hit the town with your single girlfriends to celebrate your fabulousness, I thought I’d share some of my favourite Valentine’s Day inspired beauty products with you. Hot Pink Nail Lacquer and Lippy is fun and playful. It can be worn every day or you can dress it up. This colour doubles as a year round staple all as well. Snog by Butter London is a gorgeous opaque colour and is free of the dangerous chemicals found in many other brands on the market. Beauty Blender is a tool I discovered while researching brands I wanted to carry in my store. I was very hesitant to bring it in because I always thought sponges were unhygienic and soaked up and wasted a lot of product. I finally agreed to try it and since doing so, haven’t used anything else. It’s latex free and incredibly effective. With no edges, it applies and blends foundation seamlessly and quickly. It’s washable and lasts 3-6 months. It even comes with its own cleanser. I love this little pink egg. Mary Greenwell is a very well-known makeup artist from Britain. She has created a line of perfume with a very high end aroma and glorious packaging consisting of a heavy 22 carat gold plated lid. “Plum begins the story of femininity and joy, a fragrance of uncomplicated chic and sensual warmth. Top notes of English plum, blackcurrant, peach, bergamot and lemon blend with heart notes of gardenia, tuberose absolute, orange flower absolute, rose absolute and jasmine absolute with a base of precious woods, sandalwood, oakmoss, patchouli, amber and white musk complete the intoxicating scent that is Plum by Mary Greenwell.”
Sometimes a red lip can be daunting if you’ve never tried it before but it is very “Valentine’s Day”. If you’d like to try a red lip on February 14 but are unsure of which one, I suggest Kevyn Aucoin’s lipgloss in Pasiflora. This is a sheer “true red” shimmer that is very wearable for anyone. Kjaer Weis is an organic, refillable makeup line. She is a Danish makeup artist based in New York and what she has achieved with this line is stunning. I’ve had a hard time finding a certified organic line that offers great colour payoff as well as beautiful packaging. I finally found a line that offers it all - healthy ingredients, beautiful pigment and the nicest packaging I’ve ever come across in a cosmetic line. Packaged in beautiful red boxes and high-design heavy silver refillable compacts by the famous designer Marc Atlan who has designed for clients such as Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent. This line is truly impressive. Enjoy your friends and loved ones this Valentine’s Day and try doing something unexpected. Offer a stranger a random act of kindness. Whether it’s paying for someone’s cup of coffee or paying a nice compliment, it will fill your heart on the day dedicated to love. I would like to welcome Leah Gress, the latest member to our hair team at Sara Lindsay Makeup Studio. She comes to us from the beautiful Chel Aveda Concept Salon in Saskatoon. She is incredibly talented and we are proud to welcome her. Our hair team Melissa and Leah are both looking forward to welcoming new guests. New Year, New TreNds: The 2014 ForecasT by Riley lAW son style@rileylawson.com |w w w . r i l e y l a w s o n . c o m last month we chatted about the color of the year and how to incorporate it into your wardrobe, so this month, let’s chat about some other trends you’ll see emerging over the next few months.
silhouette:
Rounded shoulders:
Florals:
The shapes and silhouettes of the 2014 spring/summer season are rounded, slouchy and fall away from the body. Although it doesn’t necessarily follow the styling guidelines i was taught according to balance and proportion, both tops and bottoms are loose and draping. it’s up to you how to pair items together, but you wil see that slouchy blouses are paired with loose fitted pants and heels.
instead of the crisp square shoulder we’ve become accustomed to, we’re seeing a slightly dropped and rounded style shape. be sure to show some shape elsewhere (as opposed to wearing something baggy all over) so you can avoid looking like a marshmallow. That means define the natural waist, show a little big of leg or opt for skinny jeans.
This isn’t anything new to the fashion scene by any means but this seasons prints are bolder and at times, a bit larger in shape. Head to toe floral pieces are also in fashion – dresses, tops and pants/skirts, and one-piece jumpsuits. if you are the fearless type, then just go for it and wear this trend on an all over basis, but if you’re a little less daring, opt for a top and jeans.
Key points to remember: - Define your natural waistline - interpret trends in whatever way works best for you - Create balance and proportion (slim on top/loose on bottom or vice versa)

Thank You By Joy Amistad from Visions Salon and Spa, Saskatoon You come to me to be pampered and feel renewed. You trust me to choose a look or style that will compliment your personality and suite your lifestyle. You share conversations with me you may never share with your spouse. Every time you see me you have the choice to show your personality through color and texture. You allow me to transform your look while you sit patiently and await the beautiful outcome. In every conversation, in every experience you teach something new without even knowing it. You give me the opportunity to place my artwork on your head and you showcase it every day. Thank you for letting me be your hairstylist. At a very young age I always enjoyed playing with hair, mine as well as everyone else’s around me. I enjoyed doing braids, making sculpted buns and curling. Every day I would try to come up with a new hair style that I could show off at school.
Through my nine years of hairdressing I have been fortunate enough to travel the world and meet a variety of people that have helped me grow not only with my skills in hairdressing, but more importantly as a person. I have formed relationships with clients that I will value forever and learned lessons that will never be forgotten. With every conversation, with every person that opens up and trusts me I truly feel privileged. When you leave the salon happy and excited with your new look, know that I am even more happy that I was able to serve you. “Hairdressers are a wonderful breed. You work one-on-one with another human being and the object is to make them feel so much better, and to look at themselves with a twinkle in their eye.” Vidal Sassoon
Growing up I never thought about being a hair stylist, hair to me was just fun. It was only when I went backpacking through Europe where I met an Australian hairstylist who was cutting peoples hair in hostel bathrooms to pay for her travel. I thought to myself, wow I could actually make a living off of what I love to do most. Shortly after, I started hairdressing school and loved it from the get go. It’s had its ups and downs through the years which are expected, as it is always a learning process. Everyone’s hair is so different, and it truly is an artistry that takes years to master. I take pride in what I do and am grateful for every client that has sat my chair. Every client is so unique, and it is my job to meet their needs, problem solve and make their visions a reality.
Joy Amistad is a passionate hairstylist who originated in Vancouver and has continued to develop her talent by further training not only in Vancouver, but as well as Las Vegas, New York, Orlando, Miami and is now residing in Saskatoon. Her extended training has furthered her knowledge in precision cuts, hair colours and up styling. Hair is a fashion industry that is continually changing and growing; she truly values the importance of continually upgrading and enhancing her skills. She doesn’t believe hair dressing is just a job, it’s her passion. Joy is a stylist at Visions Salon and Spa in Saskatoon.

REAL ESTATE 101 Credit Issues? Homeownership? There is no reason to hang your head! Good people have credit issues. Whether it be a business venture gone bad, a divorce, a partnership split or an illness. There are a number of reasons that your credit may be damaged but it doesn’t mean you are a second class citizen! People are often afraid to share the status of their current credit situation or are unaware of what actually exists on their credit bureau. It is very important to keep on top of what is on your credit bureau. And, there are online programs where you can check your credit bureau without going to a bank or lender to do so.
In the meantime, try to keep all minimum payments made and stay abreast of what is on your credit bureau. As well, sometimes there are items on your credit bureau which are a mistake or have been taken care of … so maintain the driver’s seat. The main item that is the “judge and jury” of your credit score is called your Beacon Score! This is a score that follows you around … and it is what lenders look at in combination with the items on your credit bureau, to determine your credit worthiness!
“Good people have credit issues. Whether it be a business venture gone bad, a divorce, a partnership split or an illness.” Unfortunately, you need a credit card to do this and many times someone with credit issues may not have a credit card. This is worth buddying up to a friend! These credit score checks can run about $20 dollars. So grab $20 and maybe an extra $5 and get a friend to pull your credit for you. Print off the results so you can finally know what is on your credit bureau! This is a start if you suspect there have been issues.
If you want more information on this topic there are mortgage brokers and bankers that will work with you, or give me a call and I’ll see if I can send you in the right direction. There should be a road map you can follow to get you to the intersection which allows you homeownership! Live your dream … all the best in 2014!
There are two credit bureaus – Equifax and Trans Union. I have used the Equifax site online. There are secured credit cards that you can try to get in order to start rebuilding your credit and consultants who can help with these issues. There is hope. There are also ways to buy houses without going to a traditional lender or mortgage company while you are building credit. So, keep saving for a down payment! There are transition solutions, which are available to you if you are determined to be a home owner.

Energy Efficient Cellular
Bring to mind the honeybee, tireless and hard-working. Building a hive that is a marvel of engineering. The action of working in a crafty to bring something about. This is the first order of note behind honeycomb shades. We know them as cellular shades complete with light filtering and room darkening traits. Cellular shades are my choice for energy efficiency and easy to care for. Simple in design on the surface, but examine them closer and you’ll find that cellular shades not only look great, they also have insulating properties that make your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. With energy-saving first of mind, what could be more fitting? Cellular shades achieve all the functions of standard window treatments. They reduce noise, protect your privacy, filter light and provide insulation for your windows. Cellular shades deserve to be among the top of the list when taking into account new blinds for your home. Cellular window shades can adapt or be adapted to many different functions in the manner in which they work. They increase the visual element of your home, fight on the right side of hot and cold, and they help absorb noise for a pleasant experience. Many Choices
At hand in light shades of white, cream, or neutrals plus every colour you can think of. Cellular shades can be obtained in standard window sizes and may be custom cut as you need them. The size of the pleat sets the depth of the shade. Standard depths are from 3/8 inch to 1 1/2 inch and come in single, double and triple honeycomb construction. Other options include top down/bottom up opening, corded, continuous cord or cordless controls and
remote controls to operate the shades. Cellular blinds come in a variety of styles and designs, so you do not have to sacrifice your choice of furnishing and decoration of your room. These fabric shades stack like an accordion when you draw them but look like a honeycomb beehive when you view them from the edge. With a great choice of colours to match your overall design scheme you don’t have to give up the quality of being graceful and stylish in look for the ease of use. As they become more common, they also become easy on the wallet. There are shades to fit both your energy efficiency and artistic needs as well as your budget. Letting in the Light
To in every way block the light, room darkening cellular shades often have an inner layer of mylar. Look into cellular shades when your first and foremost concern is privacy and blackout traits. For added blackout and privacy, the blinds come with side rails for above and beyond light control. Photographers have long known the benefits of blackout blinds. There are other reasons why you would want to use them. People who work shifts or are sensitive to the light for instance. Cellular blinds fold up tightly when opened, taking only a minimum amount of space at the top of windows, thus allowing the fullest of views.

Changing Changing fear fear INTO INTO HOPE HOPE Introducing Adele Kulyk, Saskatchewan`s Health Navigator.
With our aging baby boomer, growing population, people living longer, and the rise in incidence of obesity and cancer, two leading causes of death in Canada today, Canada’s model healthcare is itself in critical condition. Resources just can’t keep up with demand, and people in non-critical conditions are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Most of us have experienced delays receiving treatment, or have spent weeks or months waiting for a specialist appointment, only to be referred yet again.
Adele Kulyk, CEO, Global Healthcare Connections Inc.
Canada’s healthcare system is the envy of nations around the world. Urgent and critical care is first rate, but growing wait times and access to advancements in treatment for many health conditions have stretched from inconvenient to downright intolerable.
You deserve the best treatment regardless of these limitations and, in our experience, no one would agree more than your medical team. Yet, it is the reality of our financially taxed health system and overworked medical staff, coupled with advancements in medicine that move at a rapid pace, that your Physician may not know about the most current options for your situation. Then, due to financial restraints, or standard of care protocol, our Doctors may be limited
in what they can offer you, and how soon you are treated. We want to tell you about a new health connection… one that was developed from the heart, right here in Saskatchewan. Global Healthcare Connections Inc., Canada’s new and Saskatchewan’s only comprehensive health navigation company. They provide people just like you, with the information, tools and support you may need to gain access to medical services. Adele Kulyk is the CEO and managing director. She’s seen firsthand as many people have, the toohigh price of too little treatment, much too late. As she grieved the loss of a colleague whose stagefour cancer diagnosis robbed his wife and three children of a loving father, Kulyk made a radical decision. She couldn’t change her friend’s fate, but she could leverage her two decades of tourism, business, research and communications expertise to change the fate of many, many others.
I’M LVING PROOF that TARGETED CANCER THERAPY CAN SAVE Your life
Patient Carynn K. Diagnosed with Cancer in 2012. Back to living life to the fullest in 2013.
Meeting Carynn, you would never Carynn was living life to its fullest. Patient Carynn K. Diagnosed know she was sick, let alone the factin 2012. Taking responsibility for her health, that she took care to eat well, taking Backa tocancer livingdiagnosis life 2013.sent her reeling 20 months ago. At age 68, vitamins and supplements with Carynn is vibrant, lively and happy, moderate exercise, and spending and the best part of navigating her time with her grandkids. Being the way through her cancer diagnosis picture of health still brought about and treatment, is that she stayed this a hysterectomy, and in March of way. No chemo, no radiation, just 2012 she went to a new highly targeted, individualized, tax gynecologist. He ordered some deductible cancer treatment in testing, then went on a month-long Germany. holiday, Carynn waited for the results. The wait would worsen the After experiencing two back news. surgeries to strengthen her spine,
Carynn received a phone call stating that she had vaginal carcinoma. She was told it was very rare, but she would be ok. That was all the information she was given. It was weeks later, when she was finally able to see her family doctor that she was told it was a small lump, and that radiation would be her best option. She then saw the radiologist. When she told the radiologist she did not want to be burned with radiation, he told her it was her only option and that likely without it, she would die. Knowing it couldn’t be the only way, Carynn held her ground and refused radiation. Overwhelmed and upset, she called a common friend who was getting cancer treatment in Germany. Carynn wondered how she had ever heard of treatment there, and that’s when she was put in touch with Adele Kulyk, CEO of Global Healthcare Connections, within three days, Carynn was on a plane to Germany.
WHOEVER SAID “WINNING ISn’t EVERYTHING” NEVER HAD TO FIGHT CANCER. In the small city of Tubingnen, Germany, the cobblestone streets lead to a 10-story building with state-of-the-art treatment, located on the University campus, adjacent to a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Individualized care is of utmost importance, and it is well recognized in Germany, and under the watchful eye of Prof. Med. Dr. Joachim Drevs, Carynn received 5 weeks of immune boosting, non-toxic cancer treatments. Professor Drevs is a Hematologist, Oncologist, and Doctor of Internal Medicine, having practiced in Germany, United States, and Africa. The integrative cancer center includes a pool, gym, rehabilitation centre and small café, the city is beautiful and in between treatments, you’re healthy enough to enjoy your surroundings. No one is categorized by their diagnosis, and treatment is set up specifically for the individual. “In addition to labs, chemo-sensitivity blood tests, ultrasound, hearing and eye exams, a PET/CT scan was also performed, and here’s the kicker, in ONE day, I had the imaging reports and basic lab results. I was well taken care of, my treatment was in a lovely quiet, dimly lit room, I saw my doctor, Professor Drevs every day. After the five weeks, I came home to Saskatoon, then returned to Germany in September of 2012. The PET/CT scans showed the tumor two-thirds gone. “
“Global Healthcare Connections proved they have the network and connections to coordinate and deliver optimal health services. The trips were worth it, a PET scan back in Germany in October of 2013 showed my cancer was, indeed, gone. How can you feel better than great?” Carynn asks. Medical Travel is not merely about savings, simply meet Adele at Global Healthcare Connections and you could save more than you think… like the rest of your life. One should not have to suffer an hour, a day or a month longer than is reasonable, but thousands and thousands of Canadians are lingering anxiously in wait-list limbo and the list gets longer every day. Just because treatment isn’t life threatening doesn’t mean it isn’t vital to quality of life. It’s not about ‘queue’ jumping, it’s about your health, and what is more important than that? Picture a 50-year-old woman, overweight and being slowly crippled by deteriorating knees, yet unable to have knee surgery until she’s lost the weight; a 20-year-old man whose premature hairlines makes him look not a day over 45; an individual with limited finances, that needs expensive dental implants and crowns, or someone, no matter what age, struggling with the medical and emotional rigors of cancer, knowing that odds of five year survival aren’t promising.
By visiting another destination where the treatments for these and dozens more conditions aren’t just plentiful, but are more advanced and surprisingly affordable, people from all walks of life can have their health and happiness restored in weeks, not years. Medical travel or Medical tourism, as it is also referred, is not about queue jumping and it’s not about access for some elite, uber-wealthy segment of society, it’s for everyday people who are tired of being in pain, tired of life on a wait list, who want their lives and their health re-stored. Seeking care abroad can be daunting. How do you find and access licensed, respectable medical professionals in specialty health centres located around the world? What should you ask, know, or expect? These are the questions that can be answered by Global Healthcare Connections. They have connections with top facilities in locations all over the world—and in most cases, they have actually visited the facilities to assure quality. No matter where you go, GHC’s international network who know the destination country inside and out will, tend to your every need before, during and after a treatment or procedure.

There has never been a time in history where we’ve had a greater ability to see the world. While it is technology that allows us to view and read about our big blue marble, it is the ability to share what we see and what we create that has made it a difference maker. As children, we eagerly awaited the arrival of the National Geographic because it had the pictures and stories to take us to places we could only dream of. They have been doing that for over a hundred years and they continue to do it well. Many other magazines have appeared over the years and while they too add great content they are nothing compared to the great equalizer – the Internet. And, Google is the predominant vehicle to comb it – the world at your fingertips. The Internet has afforded us the ability to enjoy photos and videos and discover almost anywhere, all in our leisure time. A multimedia smorgasbord at almost no cost.We can see the great pyramids of Giza from almost any angle, at great resolution and read fabulous tales of the history of Egypt and its wonders of early civilization. We can visit Angel Falls in Venezuela and see what has inspired people to journey to them at great effort and cost. We can see what lives in the depths of the ocean or enjoy a climb of the highest peaks. The Internet while seemingly providing access to everything everywhere has also levelled the content playing field. No longer the sole domain of publishers and adventurers, we now have access to the travels and adventures of everyday regular people – people like you and me. We can read them and see them. And we can publish them. People willingly provide their travel photos and stories for free so there is almost no place on earth you could go that someone hasn’t been to, written about, photographed and posted a ‘selfie’ at. We share. We overshare. And that’s ok. It is as fun as it is empowering. We write our own stories. We are our own stars. The number one influencer of travel decisions is the people in your circle of influence – your community. We all have our communities of family and friends; they give us suggestions on places to go and the curiosity and confidence to get there. Sites like TripAdvisor have broadened that ‘community’ to be worldwide. People tend to have a herd mentality and it gives them comfort to select places that others have personally vouched for. It is almost a reflex to seek comments and reviews. If enough people vouch for it then it must be a good choice. There has also never been a time in history where we have had a greater ability to see the world in person. We have the unparalleled ability to travel to almost any destination in the world today in a matter of hours, even to the most remote and inaccessible places on the planet. The will and the means are the only things that stand in our way to seeing the many wonders of our FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 3 ISSUE 2, FEBRUARY 2014 | 31

I asked my son the difference between what he could surf the Internet for on the iPad versus actual travel. His answer was simple and elemental, “When I travel I can touch the things I see.” And therein lays the difference. There is a ‘you’ in touch. When you saw lions and elephants mix at a waterhole. ‘You’ remember. You remember how you felt when you stepped outside your comfort zone to embrace culture and strangers, to have them respond in kind with warmth, generosity and friendship. You remember your sons saying “ciao” to over 200 strangers in Venice for no reason other than because it was fun. You remember helping a man burn the seaweed off his boat in Zanzibar, him smiling at your marginally helpful attempts. ‘You’ romanticize. You long for that dessert you had in Vernazza and you’ve never had better. Or the stars of Patagonia, you’ve never seen more in the sky. Or maybe you just never looked harder. Or the glacial monuments of a hike in the mountains of Golden with your family at your side. You remember the beauty and were happy and grateful for every moment you had at that place, that special day, with that special person, with that special story that made it yours. Some things you just can’t Google. And that’s a good thing.

winter treasure Hunt
You may not be able to see the sand at the playground right now but you may want to dig out those sand pails and mini shovels a bit early this year! You can turn your own backyard into a treasure hunt with a few supplies you likely already have at home. To start, you’ll need some containers you can fill with goodies to bury in the snow. Look for containers that won’t get soggy in the snow. For containers that aren’t waterproof, place these in Ziploc bags before burying them. Some items could even be frozen into chunks of ice. For example, a small plastic toy could be placed in a plastic cup of water and placed in your freezer. Once frozen, take the ice chunk out of the cup to hide it in the yard. The kids would have to come up with creative ideas on how to melt or chip away at the ice to get their treasure.
such as little jokes, candy, stickers and small toys. A great place to look for small toy treasures is in the party favor section of your favourite store. Now that you have your containers and treats, go outside and dig in the snow! Simply dig little holes, place your container in the holes and cover it with snow. To make it easier, include clues for where the treasures are located like i.e.: “Where Nana likes to sit to read her book” for a treasure hidden under the porch swing. To make it more difficult, try to cover up your footprints after you’ve finished digging holes in the backyard so it’s harder to figure out where you’ve been. When you’re ready for the kids to start the treasure hunt, give each of them a treasure hunt kit including items such as mini shovels, sand pails, mittens, scarves and other winter gear. This will be a fun game for an afternoon of family fun, a winter birthday party or even just a fun play date for your children and their friends. After the game is over, the children could be greeted with hot chocolate and homemade s’mores inside the house while they look over all their new treasures.
Next you’ll need some “treasures” to place in these containers that you’ll be hiding in the yard. Treasures could include items
