Note from our Editor There is a lot of pressure on us to take care of our family, be successful at our jobs, make sure our house is spotless, and have an active social life. But it is extremely difficult to do any of these well when we are not at our best. Sometimes we need a little rejuvenation in our lives to get back to feeling like our best self. It never ceases to amaze me how getting something as simple as a haircut can change the way you feel about yourself. I know when I leave the salon I feel new again, ready to tackle the day because I feel great. As Joy Tesch alludes to in this month’s beauty article, there is somewhat of a transformation that takes place when you decide to put yourself first; you feel revitalized and confident. Make-overs don’t have to be just on our appearance. We can overhaul many aspects of our life such as our diet or fitness routine, our friend circle or our careers. Change is hard. It’s never easy to start over, but as we are reminded each spring, changes can be good. There is something exciting about a fresh start. Here’s to yours! REIMAGINING HEALTH & WELLNESS IN REGINA by: Jessica Reimer

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 3, MARCH 2017

Given the province’s bitter winter temperatures, it is no surprise that many Saskatchewanians rely on fitness centers to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle all year long. Effective last month, Regina residents now have a new wellness option at their disposal: Evolution Fitness. With four centers conveniently located around the city, Evolution Fitness—formerly known as Gold’s Gym Regina—is the product of countless hours of research, hard work, and planning. Heading up the rebrand is Korena Lafayette, Evolution Fitness’s Director of Operations and a 29-year-old brimming with optimism, drive, and an irrevocable desire to help others. Armed with years of hands-on experience in organizational restructuring, training and development, and implementing company-wide policy changes, Korena has spent the better part of two years overseeing a variety of exercises designed to shed important light on what comes next for one of the city’s most beloved gyms. After soliciting feedback from members and the generation population, she and her team discovered that a surprising number of people saw the gym as a “bodybuilders-only” facility and felt it clashed with traditional Saskatchewan values. “The culture here in Saskatchewan is very family-focused, and we have such a diverse community, too,” Korena explains. “Although Gold’s Gym is a very well-recognized brand, a lot of people automatically associate it with bodybuilding. [The brand] served us well for a number of years, but we felt the time was right to do something different. We wanted to ensure that everyone—including bodybuilders—felt they were in a comfortable, respectful, and encouraging environment.”

and becoming accustomed to the hustle and bustle of “big city life.” She arrived back in Regina with a Bachelor of Business Operations in Human Resources, an impressive work history, and a readiness to serve her home community. Unbeknownst to her at the time, this move would prove transformational in more ways than one. Although Korena maintains relocating to Saskatchewan was all about “slowing down a bit,” she soon developed itchy feet and decided to devote some of her newfound spare time to nurturing her passion for health and wellness. What began as a standard gym membership and regular workouts soon evolved into a part-time role at Gold Gym Regina’s front desk and, later, certification as a group class instructor, nutrition consultant, and personal trainer. “I joined the gym just for fun, but I absolutely loved it. Working at the front desk meant I got to know members on a different level; I was constantly seeing how you can really change your whole life by joining a gym or connecting with someone who can support you on your fitness journey.” Korena spent months managing the delicate balancing act of multiple occupations, but following the birth of her child she was faced with a tough decision: give up her “just for fun” job—one that brought her tremendous fulfillment and joy—or walk away from the corporate world forever. It did not take long for her to choose the latter and fully invest her time and energy into a career in fitness. “This is a dream come true for me. I found a place where I could successfully bring together my hobbies and passion with the professional business skills I spent so many years cultivating.”

We wanted to ensure that everyone-including bodybuilders-felt they were in a comfortable, respectful, and encouraging environment. And so, after almost a decade as a Gold’s Gym franchise, the team commenced the labour-intensive process of ceasing its association and rebranding as an independent identity better positioned to reflect what it truly means to live, work, and work out in Saskatchewan. “This is more than just a name change, and it definitely wasn’t an overnight or easy decision,” says Korena. “Imaging and branding have a huge effect on how people interpret what you do. Operating as Evolution Fitness frees up our ability to communicate visually, and showcase out to the public how we’ve changed and evolved.” Beyond its applications to the gym’s new brand, the concept of evolution and growth is also fitting for Korena on both personal and professional levels. The mother of one confessed that while fitness has always been one of her core values, she never would have imagined working full-time anywhere other than a traditional office environment. Korena returned to Saskatchewan four years ago, after spending most of her life in major urban centers like Calgary and Toronto,

For Korena, Evolution Fitness is not just her place of work—it’s also her sanctuary. It is not uncommon to find Korena at the gym on her days off, sneaking in a workout and chatting with coworkers and members. She takes special pleasure working with the gym’s female clientele, empowering them to push through feelings of limitation and inability. She shared one story in particular about a new member who confessed to Korena her fears and insecurities about working out alone. Eager to allay some of those fears, Korena invited her along to her personal work out the following day—no strings attached. “I think she was a bit surprised that the Director of Operations was inviting her to a work out, but afterwards she told me how much more comfortable and confident she felt. That’s just what we do here: we care about everybody and every body.” “Working at a gym means you can get so involved in the day-today stuff that you forget how much effort and courage it sometimes takes to walk through that door,” she continues. “Experiences like these are a powerful reminder of the difference you can make in someone’s life just by offering personalized support.” FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 3, MARCH 2017 | 7

Our goal is to show support, offer accountability, and give each and every one of our members the tools they need to feel empowered to create a lifestyle, not a habit. This benefit is not limited to women, however; men, too, enjoy significant physical and emotional gains by working out in an engaging and encouraging environment. Lack of support is one of the key culprits behind a shocking industry statistic: on average, 66% of new gym members stop using their membership within 90 days of signing up. Understandably, some of this attrition is attributable to circumstances beyond the gym or the individual’s control, but Korena and her team are committed to reducing drop-off percentages by carefully designing an optimal environment and experience.

ity, and give each and every one of our members the tools they need to feel empowered to create a lifestyle, not a habit.”

“That statistic is heartbreaking to me, because obviously those 66% of people were eager and excited in the beginning. Our goal at Evolution Fitness is to show support, offer accountabil-

“Most gyms use the same or a similar approach when it comes to members getting a membership and key tag. We are doing things a little differently, working directly with members to identify what they need, and having different types of members de-

Recent estimates place total membership between the gym’s four locations at about 9,000. Members will continue to benefit from each location’s amenities and services, but will notice a difference in the overall look and feel. As part of its innovative ‘Evolution Theory’ philosophy and approach, the gym is being managed in a way that welcomes people of all ages and at all stages of their personal fitness journeys.

pending on how they will be using the gym,” says Korena. “We believe in giving our members options, and that investment from everyone at the gym—including management—is a critical part of the evolution of our brand and the lifestyle and community we want to create.” On-site services comprise a kid’s club, personal training, group fitness, nutrition consulting, and designated Women’s Only area, with additional course offerings set to release in the coming months. The decision to rebrand Evolution Fitness as an independent health and fitness center has distinct community advantages. Saskatchewanians are historically partial to supporting local businesses, in part because those profits funnel back into and stimulate the economy. Since its beginnings more than a decade ago, the gym has maintained its position as an active community contributor, donating funds to charities and initiatives such as Habitat for Humanity and Transition House. To date, Evolution Fitness has donated over $2.3 million, and now that the brand has shed the constraints that come with being a franchise operation, there is new freedom and flexibility to explore new ways of making Regina healthier and happier. regina real estate market growth by Jessica Forbes

In this month’s article, I will be providing a market update to inform you on market growth in Regina for the early stages of our first quarter. I also have asked Natasha Mohr with The Mortgage Group to give us some takeaway advice on financing a property. Through out Regina residential areas R1-R5 there were 141 sales recorded for the month of January that resulted in a 15% increase from January of 2016. The average sale price is lower than last year at $289,000.00 this year in comparison to $304,00.00 last year. The variance in average sale price shows a 5% decrease. Although the average sale price is lower this January in comparison to last, we do still have the pick up in sales volume and we have yet to see what the Spring market brings. Spring market is statistically the most promising season for higher than normal sales volume, therefore I believe that this will increase in healthier-than-usual market conditions. Natasha’s take on mortgage rates and conditions: I am constantly being asked where mortgage rates are headed and what my thoughts are on the recent “STRESS TEST” regulations that have been implemented. I would answer by saying it is business as usual. If I have learned anything over the last fourteen years working in finance, it is that things change, you adapt, and you look for solutions. I don’t focus on the problem, but how I can solve it. That’s why I have been successful in helping many clients purchase a home who were previously told that they wouldn’t be approved for a mortgage.

Now, let’s fast forward 26 years to 2016. The average house price is $315,000 with a rate of 2.69%. You would be looking at a monthly payment of $1441.07. Guess how much interest you would have paid by the end of your term? Let me tell you: $21,886! The reason why I wanted to illustrate these scenarios was to offer some perspective on how affordable houses still are, the impact an interest rate makes on your mortgage, and the importance of working with a mortgage professional like myself who can offer you insight and guidance. The biggest area of opportunity that I see in people’s finances is with how they utilize unsecured credit. We live in a time where credit is readily available which can lead to the mindset of buy it now and pay for it later. This can have serious consequences on how much someone can afford for a house if their disposable income is required to service these payments. These unsecured debts are often at high interest rates with compounding interest, which make it hard to pay these debts off. Contact your trusted professionals for more advice on real estate opportunities and mortgage advice today!

Natasha Mohr Mortgage Expert #315830 306-541-7669 natasha@mohrmortgage.ca The Mortgage Group Brokerage License #315872

Here is something for you to think about: In 1990, the average house price was $130,000 across Canada and the average rate was 12%. This would mean your payment would have been $1,341.47 a month. The amount of interest paid over a 5-year term would have been $42,367.

LASH OUT By Sara Lindsay

Women are always on the hunt for the most effective way to achieve beautiful, full, voluminous lashes. There are so many products and services on the market that truly work, depending on what each individual woman is looking to achieve. Let’s break it down. Mascara: Tried and true, mascara is of course the most common way to emphasize your own lashes. There are endless brands promising the best results. Some work. Some don’t. Here are a few of my favourites: Kevyn Aucoin - The Volume Mascara - This beautiful Mascara comes in slim metal packaging with a tiny wand. I absolutely love this wand. I find large wands cumbersome and messy. This one allows you to coat every little lash for a super full effect. Tubed technology prevents the lashes from clumping and holds the natural curl. Kjaer Weis Mascara - This mascara is certified organic and offers a pretty and natural every day look to the lash. It comes in a gorgeous refillable tube and never smudges. Kevyn Aucoin Expert Mascara - Bloodroses - This fabulous mascara comes in a deep plum merlot shade that sets off blue and green eyes incredibly!

Ellis Faas Mascara - Packaged in a long and sleek metal tube with a beautiful tapered wand that reaches every lash, this formula is one of my all time favourites! Lash Serum - Some women have difficulty with thinning lashes or simply want to amp up what they already have. Lash serums work surprisingly well to encourage lash growth. However, be careful of the ingredients in the brand you choose. Plume Lash is Canadian made, all natural and works wonders! This one can also be used on the bottom lashes and is very effective for brow growth as well. Lash Extensions - Lash extensions have become incredibly popular and while they do require maintenance and a cost every 3-4 weeks, a lot of our guests simply wouldn’t be without them! Having beautiful full lashes every day without having to wear mascara is pretty fabulous. Always be sure to do your research when choosing a lash tech. There are so many options out there to achieve gorgeous lashes but, depending on each individual’s lifestyle and budget, there is truly something for everyone!

Try to Overcome “Roadblocks” to a Comfortable Retirement

Relax.

In your life, you will want to take many journeys. Some are physical – perhaps you’ll finally visit the French Riviera or the Caribbean. Others involve personal growth – one day, you’ll finally become fluent in that foreign language you’ve been studying. But of all the destinations you can identify, few will be as important as retirement – specifically, a comfortable retirement. And that’s why it’s so important to consider the “roadblocks” you might encounter on your road to the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Here are four of the most common obstacles:

Introductory Massage

4999*

$

Registered Massage Therapists Stretch your budget with affordable pricing Convenient hours and online booking Direct billing to most insurance providers Open evenings and weekends *First visit only. 1 hour includes change time and health history assessment. Prices subject to change. Prices and services may vary by clinic. Taxes not included.

Insufficient investments – Very few of us have ever reported investing “too much” for their retirement. But a great many people regret that they saved and invested too little. Don’t make that mistake. Contribute as much as you can afford to your RRSP or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You may also want to consider the tax-exempt growth potential that a TFSA offers, so take advantage of that opportunity, too. And always look for other ways to cut expenses and direct this “found” money toward your retirement. Underestimating your longevity – You can’t predict how long you’ll live, but you can make some reasonable guesses – and you might be surprised at your prospects. According to Statistics Canada, men reaching age 65 today can expect to live, on average, until age 83.5, while women turning age 65 today can anticipate living, on average, until age 86.6. That’s a lot of years – and you’ll need to plan for them when you create long-term saving, investing and spending strategies. Not establishing a suitable withdrawal rate – Once you are retired, you will likely need to start withdrawing money from your retirement accounts. It’s essential that you don’t withdraw too much each year – obviously, you don’t want to run the risk of outliving your resources. That’s why you need to establish an annual withdrawal rate that’s 5535situation, incorporating variables such as your age, appropriatePMS for your the value of your retirement accounts, your estimated lifestyle expenses, and so on. Calculating such a withdrawal rate can be challenging, so you may want to consult with a professional financial advisor. Ignoring inflation – It’s been low in recent years, but inflation hasn’t disappeared, and it could rise at exactly the wrong time – when you’re retired. That’s why you’ll want your portfolio to include some investments with the potential to outpace inflation, even during your retirement years. By being aware of these roadblocks, and taking steps to overcome them, Black you can help smooth your journey toward retirement – and once you get there, you may enjoy it more.

Rhonda’s Make Over By Joy Tesch at Visions Salon and Spa

I met with Rhonda and could immediately see that she had grown-out boxed colour in her hair, and was very dark and patchy in some areas. Rhonda was very easy-going and laid-back, in fact so laid-back that she just didn’t care what her hair looked or felt like. It had grown out so long, that after years of taking care of her children, parents and everyone else in her life, she just put herself on the back burner and stayed there. She admitted that it had been over 5 years since she had set foot in a salon. After speaking with Rhonda and hearing her story, I felt that a low-maintenance style would work best for Rhonda. The first step was to immediately cut 4 inches off of Rhonda’s length, and within seconds she already had more life in her look. I started off the colour process by stripping the dark saturated colour from the ends of Rhonda’s hair. I then chose a colour scheme that would grow out beautifully, making it a little easier for Rhonda to maintain it in between salon visits. I gave her a colour that was softer on her complexion, and gave her skin tone some warmth. Adding highlights and a base colour created multi tones that added depth and movement to her hair. By lightening her hair, it actually will allow her greys to grow out without having a harsh demarcation line. I also educated Rhonda on some easy haircare and styling tips that wouldn’t take too much time, yet give her great hair every day. Rhonda is gleaming with her new style! Make sure to call Visions at 306-2444443 to book your make-over with Joy!

TOP QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAVELLING TO ANTARCTICA It was my dream to step foot on all seven continents before I turned 30. This past January I had the opportunity to do so. For 19 days, I travelled aboard One Ocean Expedition’s Russian-crewed ship, the Akademik Ioffe, to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. Upon return to a (much colder) Canada, people had a variety of questions about my journey. For those that are curious and those who may be adventurous enough to head to “Terra Australis Incognita,” here are some helpful travel tips and facts. 1. How do you get there and where do you stay? The only way to experience Antarctica as a tourist is by expedition cruise (and sometimes flights) most commonly leaving from Ushuaia, Argentina and Punta Arenas, Chile. More than 40,000 people visited in 2016, with 1800 Canadians stepping foot on the continent. All cruise companies obtain permits and abide by the ruling of IAATO, the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators. 2. How expensive is it? Expeditions start at $5500 USD for nine days and increase in price based on room type and length of days – even last minute bookings cannot be found for much less. The Shackleton Suite aboard my particular voyage cost $26,000 USD per person. These prices exclude flights, pre-and-post

departure hotel and transportation as well as any necessary travel insurance. It might take a while to save for it, but I promise the experience is worth every penny. 3. What is the weather like? The travel season for the Antarctic Peninsula is November to March because it’s summertime. The weather can vary day by day, but generally the temperature ranged from minus 10 degrees Celsius to as warm as plus 10 on a sunny day. I even camped out comfortably on an Antarctic island under the midnight sun in a bivy sack. 4. What’s the wildlife like? Are there polar bears? It’s a popular misconception but there are no polar bears in Antarctica - those are found at home here in Canada. But there sure are a lot of penguins! With four species found on Antarctica and several more in the sub-Antarctic region it’s not uncommon to land at sites with more than 100,000 penguins. There are many opportunities to see humpback and minke whales (among others), seven species of penguins, six species of seals and 46 species of birds including the famed albatross. If you would like to learn more about my adventures in Antarctica, please visit my social media channels.

BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT by Holly Barker

Without a doubt, the snow is soon to be gone and the spring air will soon be filled with the scent of fresh blooms. This month, I wanted to mirror the colors that will be popping up outside and bring them into the kitchen with purpose. Spring brings youth and beauty to new grass, trees, and flowers as they get ready to grow into full bloom. Let’s channel this youth, beauty and growth to the kitchen.

White teeth: strawberries, nuts, casein, apples, citrus, raw onions, broccoli, water, seeds.

Beauty from the inside out!

Clear, Glowing skin: Omega 3 (sardines, flax, chia) Oily fish, avocadoes, walnuts, seeds, bell peppers, broccoli, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, tomatoes, dark chocolate, arugula.

Whether you want brighter eyes, whiter teeth, shinier hair, a clear complexion, a revived metabolism, tissue repair, or a 6-pack set of abs through the winter months, it starts with what you are fueling yourself with. We need to be mindful of what we are putting on the inside before we can achieve any of the results we want to see on the outside. We can apply as many creams, gels, oils, perfumes, lotions, sprays, pastes and conditioners as we want, but the most powerful way to glow beautifully and youthfully is by adding these super foods and spices to your daily mix. Bright eyes: Kale, spinach, swiss chard, sweet potatoes, yams, fatty fish, broccoli, carrots, almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, hazelnuts, pine nuts, avocadoes, berries, citrus. 20 |

Muscle/Cell repair: berries, cherries, leafy greens, cauliflower, spinach, Brussel sprouts, potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, watermelon, pineapple, kiwi, water, salmon, fish, almonds, walnuts, eggs, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, Magnum Nutraceuticals Performance Greens. 6-pack abs: eggs, lean protein, bananas, apples, bell peppers, whole grains, quinoa, oatmeal, cherries, sweet potatoes, broccoli, blueberries, spinach, wheat bran, kale.

BEAUTY SMOOTHIE

Foods to avoid that cause tooth decay, premature aging, stress, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, etc: carbonated drinks & sodas, processed foods, fast foods, sugar, candy, chips, juices, milk, crackers.

When in doubt, think the color of the rainbow; the brighter, deeper, darker the color, the better! There are no rules. You can create tasty savoury dinners, lunches, breakfast and snacks to keep you fuelled and working towards you health and beauty goals! Enjoy the colors that your March brings. I cannot wait to meet you in April!

sandwich bar When planning food for a party, I usually stick to a buffet-style meal. It’s a great way to serve a variety of foods to please even the pickiest of eaters. A sandwich bar is a great idea for a lunch menu, tea party or even a midnight lunch at a wedding. Menu Ideas: You can simply stick with the basics like bread, mayo, mustard, meats and cheeses or mix it up a bit by adding in things like: • a Panini Bar where guests can load up their sandwiches then grill them. If you don’t have a Panini press, you could use a toaster oven to toast sandwiches. • a variety of tortillas, chicken strips and vegetables for making wraps • a variety of freshly baked bread from your local bakery like sourdough bread, bagels, focaccia, garlic toast, buns, baguettes, pitas, biscuits, etc. • lots of condiments like spiced mayo, BBQ sauce, hot sauce, ranch dressing, relish, guacamole, pesto, honey mustard, Dijon mustard, ketchup, tomato sauce, salsa, butter, etc. • a variety of cheeses like jalapeno Havarti, feta, marble cheese, brie, goat cheese, Swiss, provolone, pepper jack, etc.

• an assortment of meat like pepperoni, ham, chicken strips, roast beef, pulled pork made in your slow cooker, sausage, meatloaf (it’s great in a sandwich!), salami, smoked meat, etc. • other toppings such as onions, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, pickles, banana peppers, olives, bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, roasted garlic, etc. • serve sides such as baked beans, potato chips, homemade fries or potato wedges, pretzels, fresh fruit, macaroni salad, coleslaw, etc. • desserts such as cookies, squares, homemade pie, cupcakes, or bite-sized treats like truffles and chocolates Setting The Scene: When planning your menu, think of what items will need to stay chilled and how you will keep them cool. If you’re setting up your buffet outside in the summer, you’ll want to make sure that toppings like mayo stay out of the heat. A sandwich bar is easy to set up with a variety of serving trays for the meats and cheese, bowls for condiments, and baskets for the breads. You’ll also want cutlery like table knives for cutting buns, spoons for condiments, and forks or tongs for picking up breads, meats and cheeses. If your sandwich bar will be set up outdoors like a picnic style, you can use disposable serving trays like foil trays and pie plates. Leftovers: Most of us set out way too much food for a party, so expect some leftovers. I don’t know about you, but I get tired of eating leftovers for days! A great idea would be to bring out some to-go containers at the end of the party and let guests pack themselves some food to take home. This leaves you more room in your fridge and a little less to clean up after the party! I hope your next party is filled with delicious food, lots of laughter and great memories!
