BEEF STEW
& BUTTER PUD
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS
• • • • • • •
• • • • • • • •
1 cup Burgundy wine or 1 cup dry red wine 1 garlic clove, minced 2 bay leaves 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper 1⁄4 teaspoon dried whole thyme 3 lbs lamb (can substitute lean beef for stewing) • 1⁄4 cup olive oil • 2 (10 ounce) cans beef broth, undiluted • 6 carrots, cut into 2-inch, slices • 12 small boiling onions • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and halved
DIRECTIONS
12 slices brioche — plain or chocolate chip 90g unsalted butter, softened 8 egg yolks 175g caster sugar 1 vanilla pod or 3 to 5 drops vanilla essence 300ml milk 300ml double cream Caster sugar, to finish
DIRECTIONS 1. Grease a pudding tin with butter. 2. Start with the custard... 3. Whisk the egg yolks and caster sugar. Split the vanilla pod and place in a pan with the milk and cream. Bring the milk and cream to the simmer, then sieve onto the egg yolks, stirring all the time. 4. Arrange the buttered brioche in layers in the pudding tin. Pour the mixture over the bread and leave it to soak for 20 minutes before cooking. 5. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan oven). 6. Put the dish in roasting tray three-quarters filled with warm water and place in the oven. Cook for about 25 minutes until it begins to set. 7. When ready, remove from the water bath, sprinkle liberally with caster sugar to cover and glaze under the grill on medium heat, or use a blow torch to give it that creme brûlée top.
• 6 ounces of hot, strong coffee • Whipped cream • Optional: 3/4 ounce Irish cream, or a teaspoon of brown sugar
DIRECTIONS 1. Pour the whiskey into an Irish coffee mug. 2. Put a spoon in the mug and pour in the hot coffee - the spoon somehow magically keeps the glass from breaking due to the hot liquid (don’t ask me how, just enjoy the laws of physics). 3. If you’re adding sugar, do it now and stir until it dissolves. 4. Add the whipped cream on top. 5. Garnish with coffee beans, coffee grinds or brown sugar sprinkles.

WINTER CAMPING: IT’S NOT SO BAD “You start the fire and I’ll set up the tent!” I call out to my friend from the back-end of the loaded SUV as I drag out the oblong tube of what would be our home and shelter for the weekend.
In the past two days, a foot of fresh, powdery snow had blanketed the trees of the Boreal forest in Prince Albert National Park. With nearly three feet of snow on the space we want to pitch our tent, it will take a small amount of effort to pack a trail to the site and trample it down enough to roll out and erect our three-man tent. The fluffy snow, however, will make for the perfect natural mattress to sleep on beneath my winter sleeping bag and inflatable mat.
Despite being the middle of winter, I am one of those adventuretypes that refuses to put my camping gear into storage just because summer has ended. I love being outdoors. A little snow and cold simply means I need to add a few extra layers while exploring. And the easiest way to stay warm is to keep a fire stoked and wear appropriate clothing. I like to wear a minimum of three layers, starting with a quality Merino wool or synthetic polypropylene baselayer against my skin. (Avoid cotton at all costs – it retains moisture and will cool you down, not keep you warm). Depending on just how cold it is, I add a cozy fleece and/or a light down jacket for warmth. On top, I layer a down vest and cover up with a waterproof and windproof outer shell or jacket (and ski pants, boots and the rest of winter’s typical outdoor gear). If I’m heated up and sweating during the camp set-up or while out cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, I drop layers to stay comfortable. Once I’ve done all the hard work around the campsite, I change my clothes for a completely dry set of baselayer pieces that I’ll also sleep in that night. Staying dry is the most important part of keeping the cold-weather chills away.
The trickiest part of winter camping is planning meals. Fruits, vegetables and anything with a liquid base will freeze quickly. Even beer can be too cold when the can is frozen solid. Extra fuel is often needed to help thaw frozen soups and meat or to melt and boil water for cooking and drinking. But there are some quick and simple options like boiled pasta (an excuse to indulge in KD) and sausage over the fire. Or splurge on dehydrated meals like Backpacker’s Pantry and Mountain House as they’re light to carry and surprisingly tasty. Happily, dessert is the same as summertime with graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate melted on top. Winter camping really isn’t much different than summer camping. In fact, I’d argue it’s better. There are few - if any - other people camping next to you, the wildlife is easier to track in the snow, and the long nights mean there’s a better chance of seeing the northern lights (and a great reason to sleep in the next morning). But the best part about it all? No mosquitoes.

By Michelle Strawford It started with a local 13 year old girl, lets call her Mya, who wanted a way to connect with family and friends as she embarked on a monster battle for her health. Mya started giving Wish bracelets to those special people around her. After over 100 bracelets were given and purchased by Mya’s support group the Wish bracelet continued to become a pay-it-forward gift stemming from the Las Vegas Route91 shooting. A customer purchased 2 bracelets. One for herself and left the other with a positive note to pass on to the next customer in the store. Bella Chic has since sold and given over 500 bracelets sharing the love to those in and around our community. Wish bracelets serve as an everyday reminder of our goals. When the bracelet naturally wears away, your wishes are said to come true. The Roster is another amazing fashion story. “The Roster was designed as a single launch campaign in 2016, that strived to break the boundaries of what media defines as “beautiful”. Partnering with The BeaYOUtiful Organisation, and influencers across Canada, a clothing campaign was created to disrupt the social boarders of beauty, and instead, uplift women and men through a brand statement. Trina Johnson
Trinos Menswear
The Best of Both Worlds in Fashion By Cassandra Grisdale
Trina Johnson and Gaynor Novak have a few things in common. Besides becoming good friends in recent years, both share a passion for good taste in fashion and both desired to pursue the dream of owning a local business that allowed them to share their vision with the community. They also shared similar backgrounds in management, sales and marketing. After many years of working as employees for large organizations, each decided to take the leap of faith required to ‘go it alone’ as sole proprietors in their own retail clothing stores. Perseverance paid off and years later, both have built successful businesses in their respective categories.
While Gaynor provides a unique inventory for her female customers, Trina’s focus is on male fashions. Both bring a keen eye for style, quality and comfort not easily found elsewhere. These two intrepid ladies are now taking the next step to grow and expand their services to a greater number of local customers. They have recently moved to new side-by-side facilities on Quance Street in East Regina. These two friends have now become next door neighbors, so couples can shop separately and still be together. It’s a novel concept, but that’s not the whole story. Each woman comes to their business with a unique perspective. Their stories follow.

Trina Johnson Trinos Menswear Trina Johnson has always defied convention. She made her living as an artist working in several different fields before the inspiration struck to combine her creative ability with her unique sense of style, and venture into the retail fashion world. She loves the fashion scene as it is always changing with new concepts and trends emerging every day. “I have a creative mind, and fashion allows me to constantly invent new looks with different combinations that I find very satisfying. …For me, it’s like walking art”. Trina draws upon her strong background in the understanding of color, texture and tactile sensitivity. The fabrics and materials she chooses to offer her customers are carefully selected to provide the best options for coordinating and combining the various elements of any wardrobe with a unique artistic flair. The decision to do this in a menswear store was almost incidental, but also practical. Trina felt that men would appreciate a female perspective on their wardrobe choices. She points out that ..”not everyone has a ‘significant other’ to turn to for fashion advice or opinions and that some people are pretty lost when it comes to fashion. Choosing appropriate outfits for different occasions is a daunting task for many people. With our combined staff, we can offer both male and female perspectives on wardrobe choices. We also strive to provide a wide selection ranging from dress to casual along with footwear and accessories that are unique in the city. We’re a one-stop shop, there’s nothing we don’t have, and that’s what we aim for” In coming days, customers can expect new arrivals for the spring season with brighter colors and the latest styling details. Trina is also a mother of two boys who have recently graduated from high school. She knows the struggle of shopping for grad outfits all too well and encourages parents to check out her annual grad suit promotion which has become a tradition among her patrinos who have teenagers. The latest popular fashions are always front and center during this special sale. Trina holds both herself and her staff to the highest standard of customer service. “..There are many gentlemen who view clothes shopping with the same enthusiasm as having a root canal, so we strive to make the process as fast and painless as possible. We keep everyone’s sizes and preferences on file in order to make the shopping experience less time consuming and stressful. This information also allows us to make gift shopping easy for partners and family members.” Trina loves to go the extra mile to provide service to her customers and notes that ..”We have even sent a shirt by taxi to a customer who spilled something on himself and needed a quick replacement garment before going into a meeting.” .. the type of service most people wouldn’t expect from a typical franchise outlet. 12 |
FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 7 ISSUE 3, MARCH 2018
Trinos also maintains a partnership with a local seamstress who can accommodate off-site tailoring to meet every customer’s needs. “Our goal is to save our customers time and make the clothes shopping experience as good as it can be. When we do this well, we feel we have done our jobs” After nearly 11 years, Trina Johnson has achieved the goal of establishing and maintaining a successful retail business in a highly competitive environment. Her unique perspective and her personality are projected into the atmosphere of her store and the result has been a satisfied and growing clientele. Along with her friend Gaynor, Trina invites everyone to her new location on Quance Street, just down the street from her former location with much better access and more room to park.
Gaynor Novak Bib And Tucker Clothing Gaynor’s inspiration for a women’s clothing boutique grew out of a personal need to find timeless pieces that could be dressed up or down to enhance versatility and value. Bib and Tucker Clothing, previously on Broad Street and Badham, is now on Quance Street and takes its name from an old British saying for best dress. Bib and Tucker carries a unique selection of flexible, quality garments not found in the typical big box clothing stores.
her dreams. Thanks to a loyal and dedicated staff who kept the doors open while she recovered, Bib and Tucker went on to prosper and grow. After surviving her personal health trauma, Gaynor was determined to build upon her belief that she was not alone in wanting something unique to be available to women shoppers in our city. She passionately believes the kind of versatile pieces she carries are essential to today’s wardrobes and lifestyles.
A month after opening the business, Gaynor faced a major and unforeseen obstacle. A heart attack and subsequent bypass surgery threatened to call a halt to the pursuit of
“We don’t carry a lot of dressy stuff. What we do carry can be worn for a walk around the lake, a meeting in a boardroom or a night out for dinner. Maximum versatility is our philosophy” Gaynor is also committed to using Canadian suppliers and manufacturers. She adamantly supports the domestic garment trade in our country and feels she has the largest selection of made-in-Canada brands in the city. Included with these brands are many examples of natural fibres such as bamboo, cotton and linen, all within reasonable price points. Gaynor believes that when you combine a unique selection of products with an all-star staff and a high standard of customer service, the result is a more satisfying shopping experience when compared to a typical franchise retail outlet. “Many people are saying that shoppers have changed in today’s internet-driven world. …I don’t agree at all. I think that shoppers still want to enjoy the experience of personal service provided by a knowledgeable assistant who offers useful information and advice. I also know that when customers are genuinely helped and attended to, the shopping experience becomes uplifting and enjoyable. They get to feel that their money and their time are both respected and appreciated.” Bib and Tucker Clothing is now taking the next step and building on their legacy of the right products and the right prices that have won them so many loyal customers to date. Their new location on Quance Street in East Regina provides better access and more parking to accommodate their growing business. Gaynor Novak invites all her existing and future customers to come by and experience this exciting new environment. She’s confident you won’t be disappointed!

These girls just want to have fun... while making you look and feel your best! Trinos Menswear and Bib and Tucker Clothing share a common doorway between their shops. They invite couples to share in the clothes shopping experience and wander back and forth between the two shops as they make their choices. “This has already happened and it’s been fun to watch” says Trina. Both Trina Johnson and Gaynor Novak share a vision for unique products and exceptional customer service. Their passion for their customers is infectious and their friendship and mutual respect for each other’s accomplishments is clearly evident. The two businesses while separate share many common principles. Both believe that shopping locally should be rewarding and enjoyable. Both are advocates for supporting local businesses and the community we all live in together. They also feel an obligation to return something of value to the community who has supported them. They encourage local businesses to participate with them in supporting local charities and returning something of value back to the Trinos Menswear 2741 East Quance St, Regina, SK S4V 3B7 Tel: (306) 522-4667 www.trinosmenswear.com
community that has supported them. Both women are also eager to exchange advice and ideas with other female entrepreneurs. They believe in supporting their fellow businesswomen in the city. Gaynor Novak states that she doesn’t hesitate to send customers to other local retailers if she can’t supply their needs. She believes that it is important to lift up other female business owners rather than treat them only as competitors. Trina, also urges entrepreneurs to push past their fears. She says; ..”You’re always going to be scared, but do it anyway. No matter what, change is always scary, so don’t let fear be the thing that keeps you from your dream!” It is obvious that both women have a special appreciation for the rewards they have experienced as female business owners, and they want to encourage others to follow their lead and build their own legacies. They want to share the joy of success and appreciation with everyone they know. Bib and Tucker Clothing 2739 East Quance St, Regina, SK S4V 3B7 Tel: (306) 569-3733 www.bibandtuckerclothing.com

SODA BREAD
COLCANNON
SHEPPARD’S PIE
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS
• 8 ounces wheat flour • 8 ounces self-rising flour • 10 -14 fluid ounces unsweetened plain yogurt • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 pinch salt
• • • • • • • • • • •
• • • • • • • • • • • • • •
DIRECTIONS 1. Grease and flour a 8” (20cm) cake tin (high walls are better but not necessary.). 2. Preheat oven to 190°C/375°F or 180C/350F if using a fan assisted oven. 3. Sieve self-rising flour with bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. (It is important to sieve the bicarbonate of soda with the self-rising flour, if it is added at a later stage it will give the bread a greenish tinge!). 4. Add the wheat flour to the bowl (no need to sieve). 5. In a jug mix the yogurt, honey and olive oil then pour onto the flour mixtures in the bowl. 6. Stir with a wooden spoon until well mixed and a soft sticky dough is formed. 7. Flour a surface for kneading and knead lightly (20 turns max). Form into a round shape, this does not have to fit the tin as it will spread when cooking. 8. Transfer to the floured cake tin and with a knife cut a cross across the top and place in the oven for 45 minutes. (The cutting of the cross helps to portion the bread for slicing in quarters.). 9. Eat when cool with just real butter or your favourite topping and a cup of sweet tea. It is lovely toasted too!

1 lb potato, sliced 2 medium parsnips, peeled and sliced 2 medium leeks 1 cup milk 1 lb kale or 1 lb cabbage 1⁄2 teaspoon mace 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons butter 1 bunch fresh parsley, chopped
DIRECTIONS 1. Cook the potatoes and parsnips in water until tender. 2. While these are cooking, chop leeks (greens as well as whites) and simmer in the milk until soft. 3. Next, cook the kale or cabbage and have warm and well chopped. 4. Drain the potatoes, season with mace, garlic, salt and pepper, and beat well. 5. Add the cooked leeks and milk (be careful not to break down the leeks too much). 6. Finally, blend in the kale or cabbage and butter. 7. The texture should be that of a smoothbuttery potato with well distributed pieces of leek and kale. 8. Garnish with parsley. 9. Colcannon is also made by cooking layered vegetables, starting with potatoes, in a slow-cooker during the day. 10. Drain vegetables, blend with milk and margarine as above and garnish with parsley.

DIRECTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Add carrots, onions, and potatoes; cover and cook another 30 minutes.
IRISH COFFEE INGREDIENTS • • • •
1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey 6 ounces of hot, strong coffee Whipped cream Optional: 3/4 ounce Irish cream, or a teaspoon of brown sugar
SHAMROCK JUICE INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
1/2 ounces gin 1/2 ounces white tequila 1/2 ounces light rum 1/2 ounces vodka 1 ounce Blue Curacao 4 ounces fresh squeezed orange juice
DIRECTIONS 1. Fill a hurricane or parfait glass with ice. Pour in the liquors and top off with the orange juice. Garnish with an orange wheel and cherries.

Make Sure You Have Prepared a Will
Braids are trending once again! They have become an increasingly popular choice for bride’s and their bridesmaids through the years. This creates a beautiful boho feel. You can add some soft waves and a whimsical braid, accessorised with fresh flowers to complete this look. Fresh flowers are a beautiful addition to any hairstyle, whether it’s a statement flower tucked into your hair or smaller flowers weaved through your braid. Placement of flowers can add something to every hairstyle. Flower crowns have become an increasingly popular choice for bridesmaids and are a great way for the bride to stick out. That being said a flower crown can also be used just for the bride to form the utmost boho look. For bride’s with fine hair, braids can sometimes look quite severe and appear rather flat so the trick here is to add some textures. Play around with different types of braids to make the style more interesting and fuller, make sure to leave some strands and wisps of hair falling down to frame your face to soften the look. Clip in hair extensions are also a good investment for the day to create extra fullness and length. If extensions are not for you, a gorgeous classic updo can become complete with a wedding comb or bridal hair pins. In previous years centre parts, sleek and straight hair was trending but now it’s all about texture! Embrace your natural texture of hair. From soft beach waves, to blown out curls, a bit of added texture can make the style look less grad and more chic. Looking for something a little different, modern, yet still chic? A half updo knot is a great option! For my boho brides have it more tousled, or for more of glam gals, style it with loose waves and a smooth finish. Depending on the thickness and volume of your hair, you could either add details to the side of your knot or directly to the knot itself. I love the idea of some delicate hair pin positioned into the bun to really create a beautiful focal point. Lastly, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a hair trial with your hairstylist before the big day. Come to the appointment with an idea of a look you would like, photos are a great visual as well! Being prepared and having a trial before your wedding day, will ensure everything runs smoothly the morning of. Make sure to take photos of your trial to be able to look back and let your stylist know of anything you would like fine tune or change from the trial date. Do not feel bad if there are changes you would like to make! As your hairstylist it is our job to make sure you are 100% happy with your hair.
Planning for your financial future* involves much more than just ensuring you have adequate funds for retirement. It’s a multi-faceted process that also includes estate planning, which should not be overlooked. A will is the cornerstone of any estate plan, but did you know that almost half of Canadian adults don’t have one? It’s true that coming to terms with our own mortality isn’t pleasant, but people are taking some significant and unnecessary risks by not having a will. It’s the legal document that outlines your detailed instructions for passing along property, investments and other elements of your estate to your spouse, children, grandchildren, other relatives, friends, business partners and charity. If you die without a will - in legal terms known as dying “intestate” - your estate will be divided according to the laws of your province that govern the distribution of estate property. In most cases, provincial law will govern how your assets will be divided among your spouse, children and perhaps your brothers and sisters or parents. Moreover, there’s the practical reality of potential family disharmony which often results when a valid will is not in place. Your primary focus in formulating a will should be your loved ones. Passing assets to your spouse or children can ensure that your death won’t cause undue financial hardship. It’s important that your will is financially and legally sound. So it’s essential to meet with your financial representatives and lawyer before making any decisions. To make sure that your will is valid, have it prepared by your lawyer. One of the key decisions you’ll have to make is appointing an executor, who acts on your behalf to settle the estate. Make sure your executor and close family members know where to find your will when you die. You also need to decide on your beneficiaries. Specify what is to go to each beneficiary. You can list cash amounts or property, or a percentage of the value of your estate that is to go to each of your heirs. List all items of sentimental value, as well as treasured property, and specify where each is to go. Your list should include the family cottage, works of art, collectibles, jewellery and important keepsakes. And don’t forget that more beneficiaries may emerge later in life, such as grandchildren or stepchildren. If you intend to give everything to your spouse, leave instructions for distribution of your estate in case you both die at the same time. And if you own a business or are a partner in a business, leave specific instructions for that portion of your estate. Do you want to pass along the business or instruct it to be sold with the proceeds given to beneficiaries? It’s also important to get professional advice on the most tax-efficient means of leaving assets to heirs. The less tax your estate pays, the more they get. PMS 5535 Finally, and most importantly, you must specify who is to take care of your young children when you die. And you should include instructions for your funeral and burial or cremation as well. If you already have a will, make sure it’s up to date and review it regularly. Events such as marriage or divorce, birth of children or grandchildren, considerable growth in assets, relocation to another province, or receipt of an inheritance all are reasons for a review. And even if you have experienced none of these events, you should still take a look at your will once a year. In the end, your will is far more than a legal document. It’s protection for your loved ones and peace of mind for you. Fortunately, obtaining a will is generally a quick, simple and Black so if you don’t have one, make sure you speak to your lawyer about it. inexpensive process, Member * Canadian Investor Protection Fund Edward Jones does not provide tax or legal advice. ULTIMATE SALAD BAR I know you’re used to seeing articles like Ultimate Ice Cream Bar but I thought I’d mix it up a bit this month with a healthier buffet option. So let’s put the candy aside for a little bit and focus on healthy fresh foods like vegetables and fruit. Don’t worry; you can still enjoy a big slice of cake for dessert. After all these vegetables, you’ve earned a treat!
Setting The Scene What takes a salad bar from traditional to ultimate? Variety! You’ll want plenty of bowls in a variety of sizes to display all the salad bar options. Don’t have room in the cupboard for a dozen new bowls? Plastic and paper bowls work just as well and they make clean-up super easy. You’ll want to use items around the house to give your buffet some different heights: cake stands, candlesticks, and decorative boxes all work well for this. Don’t forget lots of spoons, scoops and tongs (at least one per bowl) to keep hands out of the food. Although it’s pretty easy to figure out what everything in the salad bar is without labels, an easy idea for decorating your space is to make a café-style sign listing all the foods in the buffet separated into categories: Base (greens), Proteins, Vegetables, Fruit, Cheeses, and Extras. For this party sign, I used black cardstock paper and a chalkboard pen. 22 |

Food Chopping and washing all these fruits and vegetables takes a bit of time but I’m pretty sure this counts as your cardio workout for the day. You may want to start this a day early then store all the food in the refrigerator until party time. For foods you want to keep warm on the buffet table, you could use a mini crockpot (you can buy these in little dip sizes) or just heat those foods right before setting them out. Not sure what to serve? Here are lots of different options: Choose Your Base: • Romaine • Spring Mix • Spinach • Pasta Proteins: • Chicken • Steak • Taco Beef • Hardboiled Eggs • Bacon • Chili Vegetables: • Tomatoes
• • • • • • • • • •
Cucumbers Celery Corn Peas Carrots Mushrooms Bell Peppers Onions Radishes Broccoli
Fruits: • Lemons • Limes • Raspberries
• • • •
Strawberries Blueberries Grapes Mandarins
Cheeses: • Cheddar • Feta • Goat • Parmesan Extras: • Raisins • Craisins • Sunflower Seeds • Black Beans
• • • • •
Roasted Garlic Tortilla Strips Croutons Pickles Crispy Onions
Dressings: • Ranch • Caesar • Chipotle • Italian • Poppyseed
Now if you’ll excuse me, all this talk of salad has me craving a cookie.
