SPIRIT MATTERS by Kelly Green

What is Spirit? A Question with a twist!

WORDS MATTER.

This may be one of the perennial questions asked since the beginning of time. And even with all of our advances in 2017 there's rarely consensus. Initially the word spirit came from the Latin 'spiritus' which meant breath. And what do we do when we breathe? We Inhale or Inspire. Rather than just debating or discussing, consider a twist! Maybe a more helpful question to ask is, What inspires me? Others? And then? Change this question into a request - In~Spirit~Me! And then take a breath and see what happens!

EDITOR’S NOTE It’s been one year since I’ve become a part of the PINK team. Since then, I’ve read countless stories of women who have made a difference in their lives and many others’. Their stories have been about struggle, loss, resilience, accomplishment and inspiration. I’m thankful for you, the readers, who pink up our magazine each month and let us know how you have connected to an article or issue in some way. For me, reading and writing are outlets. In a hectic household with a toddler and a new baby, I like to have my “me time” to decompress and escape into a world of words. While I love a great mystery, or am fond of a classic tale of love, I am particular to the stories that are autobiographical or inspired by true events. I think that’s why I am so drawn to the articles in each month’s issue of PINK. The accounts of women in our own real world remind me of the fearless heroines I’ve read about for years. While they are not slaying dragons, or fending off evil sorcerers, these women are making changes and positively influencing the world around them. Whether the article is about helping others find the beauty within, encouraging a healthy lifestyle, sharing a delicious recipe or inspiring everyone to put the needs of those who are vulnerable before our own, these stories unite us by showcasing what is good in the world. The real world. BRIGHT EYES DOG RESCUE: THE GIFT OF A BEDR LIFE by: Jessica Reimer

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 4, APRIL 2017

In her best-selling book A Dog’s Guide to Humans, author Karen Davison says that, “saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” This idea is central to the philosophy of care at Bright Eyes Dog Rescue (BEDR), a Regina-based non-profit charitable organization connecting abandoned, abused, feral, injured, and surrendered puppies and dogs with loving, forever homes. Founded in 2010 by Jamie Parker and her mother Karen Filleul, BEDR has created a vibrant and compassionate community of volunteers who, together, have changed the lives of more than 1,300 dogs in and around Saskatchewan. Chantal Cattell is one of these volunteers; she donates countless hours of her time to ensuring each and every dog at BEDR has the best opportunity to find the home he or she deserves. It is not uncommon for Chantal, who works as a sales representative and travels around southern Saskatchewan, to fit in phone calls, pick-ups and drop-offs in between sales calls. Many road trips are made with a furry, four-legged friend by her side. Today, Chantal serves as one of the organization’s six Directors and as its Intake and Vet Care Coordinator, but her connection to BEDR long precedes this appointment. Years prior, in the wake of a painful divorce that placed her under significant financial pressure, she was forced to make what she maintains was one of the hardest decisions of her life: to surrender her two dogs. “When you fall on hard times, there’s only so much money and so much you can do,” says Chantal, who at the time was balancing the demands of life as a single parent with two growing children. “For me, I had limited options and I realized I was no longer being fair to my dogs. It killed me to have to give them up,

Since joining BEDR, Chantal—along with the five other Directors and an Operations group of about ten—has beefed up many of the organization’s policies and expanded its reach into rural, remote communities spanning all corners of Saskatchewan. Of note are ongoing efforts to connect with residents and animals in northern communities like Ile a la Cross and La Loche, where access to veterinary and other animal services is limited. “We have some really great “boots on the ground” rescuers up there. We try to send food and, most recently, vaccinations regularly, and assist at spay and neuter clinics hosted by Animal Clinic or Regina owner Lesley Sawa and, in

saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever. but I knew reaching out for help was best.” While evaluating her options, Chantal was struck by BEDR’s thorough, thoughtful adoption process. A long-time supporter of animal fostering, she did not want her dogs to be resigned to life in a cage—an unfortunate reality for many animals housed in shelters. “When I looked at what Bright Eyes was doing, I could see it was a step above the rest,” says Chantal. As Director and Intake and Vet Care Coordinator, Chantal brings a unique perspective to the group. She draws on her personal experiences to empathize and connect with pet owners who are no longer physically, emotionally, or financially able to care for their animals. “I can appreciate why many people are hesitant to reach out for help,” she shares. “People are embarrassed to admit defeat or failure, to acknowledge their circumstances have changed. But the fact is that the one who ends up with the most damage in those situations is the dog, so it’s important to educate people about the service we provide and for them to know there’s another option out there.”

future, with Canine Action Project. We want to do more across the province, servicing areas that don’t have the same kind of access you’d find in a city.” Over the years, BEDR has seen and looked after pups of all shapes, sizes, and circumstances. Some require extensive training; others surgical attention; and others are simply in need of tender, loving care. With the help of dedicated volunteer foster families, BEDR dogs are welcomed into a home and remain there until they are matched to a suitable family. Sometimes the commitment on foster families is small—a few days here, a few weeks there—and other times it can be very involved, transporting dogs to and from medical appointments, honouring dietary restrictions, and exercising tremendous patience while the dog becomes accustomed to a life unlike what he or she has ever experienced before. Chantal, who regularly fosters BEDR dogs, commented on how rewarding an experience it is to watch as a frightened, timid dog transform into a happy, playful, confident creature. In some cases, fostering can even mean the difference between life and death for an animal. In a report from the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, more than 15,000 cats and nearly FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 4, APRIL 2017 | 7

3,000 dogs in shelters across Canada were euthanized in 2015. Although this number is a significant decrease from previous years and is coupled with an increase in the number of pet adoptions, it still points to a need for families to open their homes and their hearts to fostering animals. According to Chantal, all that’s required to become a foster is a love for animals, a pet-friendly space, PET FOOD • PET SUPPLIES and the time and patience to give the PET TOYS • PROFESSIONAL animal the affection GROOMING SUPPLIES and attention it deserves.

BEDR is also part of the Saskatchewan Rescue Network, a collection of likeminded, reputable organizations who aim to place every vulnerable animal in a safe and secure home. Chantal shared that BEDR currently has active partnerships with other rescue organizations in Manitoba, Alberta, and even British Columbia. When an organization experiences an influx of animals,

they lean on each other to lend support and capacity, ensuring each and every pet is well looked after. “Our group really networks together,” says Chantal of BEDR’s volunteer community. “Everyone is very positive and helpful, and so many people are so involved. It’s a great thing to observe and be part of.” Foster families are provided with the supplies necessary to attend to each dog’s needs, from collars to baby gates, medication, and training. Dogs stay in foster care for a minimum of two weeks; this allows time for them to settle into their new environment, at which point likes, dislikes, and other behavioural nuances start to emerge. “We call those first seven to ten days ‘the honeymoon phase;’ once they’ve really settled in, their true character comes out. Sometimes we observe food aggression or separation anxiety, and we make sure to notify adopters of these issues and help them manage these behaviours.” BEDR follows a scrupulous, multi-step application process. Once a dog has undergone any emergent medical care, veterinary check-ups, and temperament tests, he or she is marked available for adoption. Adoption applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and require a mandatory meet-andgreet, home visit, and extensive screening to ensure the adopter is adequately prepared to make this sizable and, of course, lifechanging decision. As mentioned on their website (www.brighteyesdogrescue.com), honesty is the best policy when it comes to finding homes for dogs. Is it hard to say goodbye when a foster pup is matched to its forever home? Chantal says yes, but that knowing the animal will forever be loved and looked after helps to ease the transition. In some cases, though, families are guilty of what is lovingly called a “foster fail:” families set out with the expectation of a temporary arrangement, become emotionally attached to the animal, and then upgrade to a permanent adoption.

Moving forward, BEDR is committed to keeping its services affordable and accessible to the general public. As a registered non-profit charity, BEDR relies on corporate and individual donors to subsidize the costs of food, training, medication, and other basic necessities to keep its puppies and dogs happy, healthy, and adoptable. A host of adoption events are scheduled for the month of April. BEDR has been named Pet Valu Grasslands’ rescue of the month, and a selection of the organization’s playful pups and knowledgeable volunteers will also make appearances at the Regina Thunder Football Club (http://www.reginathunder.ca) and the Hydeout Dog Training Center (http://www.hydeoutdogtraining.com/). On behalf of everyone at BEDR, Chantal would like to give special thanks to the many clinics, commercial businesses, groomers, pet stores, trainers, and photographers who make their work possible. All photos featured in this article were taken at Regina’s Victoria Square Shopping Centre, an ongoing BEDR partner.

regina real estate foundations by Jessica Forbes

Buying a home can be very enjoyable and satisfying, given the opportunity to create inviting spaces. However, gaping cracks or bowing deflection in the foundation wall can come as unsightly surprises when you are looking at your next big investment. This less appealing aspect of shopping for a home in Regina is especially important to understand as these problems arise from our soil conditions. The backstory for the environmental issues that caused our soil to be in the form of a gumbo-like clay goes back more than 11,000 years ago. Glacial Lake Regina encompassed Regina and a large portion of Southern Saskatchewan. Sodium bentonite, a component that triggers the soil to take on water and expand, is one of the factors to this issue. The extreme weather conditions do not help with the volatility of movement due to freezing and thawing. As a result, buyers may find a home with heaving in the floor or see that the foundation walls are shifting and showing deflection. The expansion in the clay-like soil adds unwanted pressure on the foundation walls. This is a commonality amongst Regina properties throughout the city. The situation is manageable with proper precautions and maintenance.

To completely eliminate our known issues with foundations is impossible, but building a property on what is called “piles” is another important topic to touch on. This is one of the more current methods which was formulated to ensure that the structure remains in a stable and straight position. Piles are long pieces of cement with rebar to strengthen which extends deep into the ground used to stabilize home foundations. There is no way to fully prevent cracked basement walls but the evolution of new methods has helped greatly. Buyers and sellers take note; the structure of a home can be a costly component to a purchase and is added maintenance, so it should be considered for the pricing of a property. This also goes to show the importance of hiring a professional Real Estate Agent for the proper initial evaluation and disclosure of a potential deficiency. Home inspections are extremely important for this reason as well. For the structure, the most important opinion is that of an engineer’s evaluation. The structural company that has been helpful to my clients and is an established company in Regina, is AAA Solid Foundations Repair Ltd. You can find more information on foundation maintenance and repair at their website: aaasolidfoudations.com

Knowing how to prevent issues and strengthen the foundation of the homes in Saskatchewan can make the conditions much more manageable. Home owners and purchasers must ensure advice is obtained from industry experts on the conditions and remediation, such as engineers and experts in foundation repair. The most commonly encountered form of structural support is the bracing technique, which is the use of steel beams that are bolted to the wall, connecting from the foundation floors to the ceiling joists, preventing the wall from pushing inward. Other recommended methods of reinforcement and protection to the structure of your property include techniques such as the use of pony wall, waterproof membrane, installation of weeping tile and improvement in grading, and tele-post adjustments.

LESS IS MORE By Sara Lindsay

Spring is here! It’s the time of year where we start to see the pretty pastels and bright fresh makeup colours of the season. While a dramatic look can be fun too, I love a “less is more” look for an everyday fresh face. Keeping your foundation to a minimum with a tinted moisturizer and adding a concealer to cover only the areas that need a little more coverage will achieve fresh and luminous skin for spring. Brush up your brows with a clear brow gel for a natural look and add a little colour only where needed to fill in any sparse areas. Keeping the eyes light and bright with an interesting texture adds an easy and unexpected pop. Try using a metallic cream shadow swept across the lid and inner corner of the eye or an eye gloss across a bare lid for little flashes of shine with a curled lash and a light coat of mascara. I love a monochromatic cheek and lip! Patting a pretty pink lipstick on your cheeks and lips is an easy way to create a look of a fresh natural flush. This look is easier to achieve than you think and we are always here to show you how.

reduce stress, move forward, enjoy your spaces! organization and storage solutions for your home or office

Many Canadians look forward to an annual tax refund from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). It’s a mini-windfall-and it’s tempting to spend the money on something frivolous.

Tips for children’s rooms: •

“Two of these things belong together”; use clear containers or bins to sort toys.

Have a bookcase (secured to the wall) for books and display items.

Install a low rod and use small hangers for young children’s clothes.

Utilize closet shelves and drawer space for clothing that doesn’t need hanging.

Continually donate, sell or store out-grown clothing, toys and books.

Tax Return Choices Spend or Invest?

But there are other uses for your refund. When you use the money you receive wisely, it can pay big dividends over time. Here are a few suggestions for making the most of your refund.

Bev Chandler Professional Organizer

PALAZZO OUTDOOR

Invest in an RRSP. Use your tax refund to get an early start on your annual Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) contribution. The sooner you get money into your RRSP, the sooner you take advantage of tax-deferred growth. Make up for missed RRSP contributions. You’re allowed to make up for missed contributions going back to 1991. Using your refund will increase your pool of tax-sheltered assets, potentially boost retirement wealth and create a larger tax deduction this year or in future years. Pay down or eliminate high-interest debt. Use your refund to pay down credit card balances, personal loans or other expensive debt. You’ll reduce interest costs. Pay down your RRSP loan. If you borrowed money to make an RRSP contribution, pay down the loan as soon as your refund arrives. Pay down the mortgage. Every dollar you put toward your mortgage principal is a dollar on which you won’t pay interest for the next 5, 10 or even 25 years. Contribute to an RESP. Put money into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children or grandchildren. An RESP is an excellent tax-deferred vehicle to save for post-secondary education. Spend a bit on yourself. It won’t hurt to spend a little of your refund on yourself. After all, you have to have some fun in your financial life. But try to limit PMS it to 10% 5535to 20%. Now here’s the bad news. You don’t really want a refund. That money you get back from the CRA every year is like an interest-free loan to the government. By paying more in taxes throughout the year than you should, you’ve let Ottawa use your money. Plus, you loose out on potential investment returns until your overpaid taxes are returned. If you regularly receive a refund, consider having the income tax deducted from your regular pay cheque reduced. Obtain a copy of Canada Revenue Agency Form T1213 (Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Black Source) at your local tax office or on the CRA’s Internet site. Submit the form to the CRA, which will send you a letter of authority allowing your employer to reduce deductions during the year.

Bridal Hair Tips By Joy Tesch at Visions Salon and Spa When it comes to your wedding hairstyle, I am sure all of you ladies have gone Pinterest crazy and now don’t even know where to start. Do you want to have your hair up in an updo? Wear it down in soft waves? Maybe half-up or pulled to one side hairstyle? There are so many options! Here are a few tips that will help you make your final decision. 1. What is your dress like? Your hair shouldn’t be competing with your dress; it should complement it. If your dress is simple, it’s safe to go with a more dramatic hairstyle. If your dress is an extravagant ball gown full of embellishments, maybe consider doing a more subtle, yet elegant updo. If your dress has a gorgeous open-back design, then a pulled to the side or a braid would be a great option! 2. What’s the weather like? If the wedding takes place inside or during cooler climates, it’s safe to have your hair down and curled, or any other hairstyle of your choice. If you’re getting married in a hot or humid climate, definitely go for an updo where you won’t need to worry about the frizz and the hair sticking to your back. You will thank yourself on your wedding day! 3. What’s your hair length and volume? It’s easy to fall in love with a Pinterest hairstyle only to find out that your hair isn’t nearly long or thick enough to pull it off. In this case, consider only looking for hairstyles that can be done on shorter to mid-length hair. Otherwise, thankfully, you can wear hair extensions to achieve that perfect hairstyle of your dreams. I hope that these tips have helped you in some way. Happy Hair days! EXPLORING SASKATCHEWAN’S SANDCASTLES

It’s the location of two stunning geological features easily accessible in southwestern Saskatchewan, but a destination very few people have visited. The Beechy Sandcastles and Sunken Hills Trail lies off the shore of Lake Diefenbaker to the east of Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park. I discovered the area through a zoomed-in photograph found online of the spires and pinnacles of the sandcastle. At first I thought it was mislabelled as a Saskatchewan destination. Upon searching further, I delightedly discovered the site was only 2 hours southeast of Saskatoon. Although on private land and sometimes difficult to access during wet weather, the owners have made a driving loop available for those who are curious to see the eroded sand formation and sunken plateau hill. The area is best explored by foot, trekking through the rolling and rugged hills. Hiking down to the sandcastle formation, I climbed on top of it for a 360-degree view of the grass-covered hills behind me and the glittering blue water of Diefenbaker Lake ahead. Continuing further down the hill, I was pleased to find hundreds of spring crocuses blooming in the grass. Stealthily nestled next to the lavender flowers were the pointy spikes of Saskatchewan’s resident prickly-pear cactus, ready

to poke through the soft mesh of my runners if I didn’t watch where I stepped. Fifteen minutes later and down by the water’s edge, I was surprised to find shells and fossils along the sandy shoreline. History has hidden itself here in the depths of the soft mud and sand in the form of coral, ammonites, and mussel and oyster shells brought to the surface by wind and water erosion. Back up the hill and in my vehicle, I cruised further along the grassy cow-trail to arrive at the sunken hill. The area collapsed in 1949, thought to have been the result of a natural gas pocket, an underground lake or the shifting of quicksand. Today, it’s home to a variety of animals including burrowing owls, sharptail grouse and mule and white-tail deer. Running out of daylight as the sun slipped behind the undulating terrain behind me, I didn’t have time to trek into the valley for more exploration. But in true Saskatchewan style, the view looking out from on top of the plateau stretched for miles, reaching all the way to the horizon. I knew it wouldn’t be long before I made a return trip to continue exploring one of Saskatchewan’s best hidden gems.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A FITNESS ROLE MODEL

by Holly Barker

I’ve had this conversation with many people over the last few months. It seems that everyone wants in, but no one is quite sure just how to actually do it! My answer to those that are seeking recognition in the fitness industry, who want to be a fitness role model and want “in” is this: There are so many ways to get in, there are so many opportunities to enter, there is only one you! It is within your power to CREATE your position in the fitness industry. This month I will cover 1 key ingredient to success and 1 key misconception in regards to rising to the top as a fitness industry role model. If you like the theme to this month, please respond on facebook /hollybarker or /hollsbarks, Instagram @hollsbarksfitness or email thehollybarker@gmail.com and give me your feedback! I meet someone that reads this publication or has seen my column every other day, yet I never get any feedback on what you all like, dislike or would love to know. For me to serve you better, I want to know what you want to learn, and how I can contribute to your success! My experiences are meant to be shared to help you succeed in your adventure; that is why I’m here, that is my purpose. So, before I even start this month, I want to thank you all for following along and learning and growing with me each month. This adventure has been nothing short of a dream and I am more excited than ever to see what lies ahead and to share it with you all! 1 key ingredient to breaking in to the fitness industry and becoming a fitness Role Model: Build your different – If you follow me @hollsbarksfitness (IG) or on any of my social feeds, you will know that I dislike all the ‘same’ that everyone is contributing. I believe in building your different, I applaud standing out and I encourage you to build your different, thus building your value with everything that you do! This does not mean you have to stand alone just to stand out. This means that you should associate yourself with reputable and respected brands, companies, federations, causes and people that you value and stand behind. Do not compete with these brands and powerful influences, but continually build your value alongside them each step of the way. I preach win-win relationships. As business owners, this is a core value both my husband and I have believed and stood behind for as long as we have had the privilege to create employment and opportunities for others. What does win-win mean? When you are offered something or given an opportunity, always approach this as something that can catapult you towards your future self. If this is an opportunity or 20 |

offer that can help you, how can you bring your best self to make this opportunity the first of many? How can you, in turn, help the individual, company, association that is helping you forward? Building your different starts with a mental shift. I call it, ‘shifting from the employee mentality towards the fitnesspreneur mentality.’ When you start to think of yourself as an asset and brand and you lead with your value and what you can bring to any opportunity, you begin to build your different and the people that hold the opportunities start to take notice. Carry this tip forward into your adventure and I’m positive you will be happy with the results that come along with it. 1 key misconception to breaking in to the fitness industry to become a fitness Role Model: To be in fitness, I must compete on a stage or hold a title to my name. FALSE! Although competing on a stage for a federation is an amazing start and perfect option and adventure for many, it is not for everyone and may actually be detrimental for you if you feel that it is your only method to success. There are many different platforms to build your audience from and to create your value, brand and voice through. The stage is an amazing platform to capture an audience and to share your voice. It is an incredible way to build your network and to see what that world is all about, to speak to competitors from personal experience. However, do not feel that you must step on stage to become a fitness role model, a brand, a sponsored athlete…whoever you wish to be in the industry. If your #1 goal is to be a professional in the sport, then the stage helps and is your method to that success. But an important factor, if this is the case, is to make sure the stage you step on actually reaches the audience you are trying to reach and represents the values you stand behind. At the end of the day, being a professional for a federation or a company can be valuable to cross brand with the other brands that associate with that, but when trying to build your own value and brand, it is very important to cast a wide net and to explore the many different opportunities that the industry has to offer. Other very successful ways to break in to the fitness industry and become a fitness Role Model aside from stepping on stage are: Work in the industry – find a company you believe in, that invests in their employees and adds to the fitness culture. The purpose is to motivate, to inspire and to reduce limitations. Great companies will provide a welcoming team atmosphere that help you create the brand and voice you are trying to build. Contribute to the community and create a win-win relationship with your employers, teammates and clientele. There is no limit to what building a strong, inspiring network can do for your future. Build your social media – share your voice and let others in. Give people something to follow and to look up to. Remember that we

all start somewhere and sharing your journey and adventure can help so many become their best selves every day! This also helps you build your voice and find where your passion lies. Sharing your success and journey may take you on a whole new adventure you could not have dreamed possible!

easter bark Just as you’re finishing the last of the Valentine’s Day chocolates, the Easter treats start making their way into your pantry. This Easter Bark recipe takes your favourite Easter treats and turns them into a delicious dessert perfect for Easter baskets, or as a hostess gift. Ingredients: •

graham crackers (found in the cookie section of the grocery store)

2 jars of marshmallow fluff (found in the ice cream toppings section of the grocery store)

3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

variety of Easter candies like gummy bunnies, chocolate coated candies, pastel sprinkles, jelly beans, Mini Eggs, etc.

Directions: 1.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

2.

Place a single layer of graham crackers on the cookie sheet.

3.

Spread the marshmallow fluff evenly over the graham crackers. This is a sticky process, so you can use a little water on a spatula to help evenly spread the marshmallow fluff.

4.

Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave. Microwave on 30 second intervals, stirring well after each 30 seconds. You want the chocolate melted, but not really hot.

5.

Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the marshmallow fluff.

6.

While the chocolate is still melted, start topping it with a variety of Easter candies.

7.

Place the Easter Bark in the fridge until the chocolate has completely hardened (at least a couple of hours or even let it sit overnight).

8.

Once the chocolate has hardened, you can break the Easter Bark into pieces then store it in a food storage bag in the refrigerator.

I hope your Easter celebrations are filled with love, laughter and lots of chocolate bunnies!
