Note from our Editor For most of us, it’s easy to follow the crowd. However, if you go with the majority, do what’s always been done, or stay within that safe little comfort zone, you’ll never really get to experience life to the fullest. Take Lucinda Leontowich, for example, the leading lady in this month’s cover story. After a number of years in a career she wasn’t totally sold on, Lucinda took a chance and it paid off. I encourage you to do the same. Maybe you’re the person who orders vanilla ice cream every single time. Maybe you have had the same hairstyle since high school. Perhaps you are in university, pursuing a degree that will get you a good job, but not necessarily make you happy. It’s time to take a chance. Think of this season of new beginnings as a new beginning for you. Order Rocky Road (truly, I have never had Rocky Road ice cream), chop your hair off (head to Visions Salon) and make decision that will set you up for a lifetime of happiness. Believe me, once you decide to make a change, you will never look back. FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 5, MAY 2016

The art of barbering has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity, with barbershops making a global comeback. Despite its apparent trendiness, though, the barbershop tradition has stood the test of time and has remained largely unchanged for generations. Modern barbershops still serve as a social space, bringing people together to enjoy good company and great haircuts. What’s more, many of these shops also borrow traditional design elements like luxurious upholstery and sleek wooden furnishings to create an atmosphere that is equal parts indulgent and inviting.

spent roughly three years working as a salon stylist but quickly realized the career path did not offer her the sense of purpose and belonging that she craved. Although she had always found barbering appealing, it wasn’t until she accepted a rather unique opportunity that she began to see the profession as a viable career for herself. “I remember seeing these barbers in their 70s and 80s, still working and still totally in love with their work,” she said, sharing how inspired she was by the barbers’ unrelenting passion

I’ve always had this attitude about being different. I think people should wear what they want to wear and have their hair however they want it. It’s just hair – it grows back. However, barbershops today differentiate themselves in one important way: by staffing an increasing number of female barbers.

for and dedication to their craft, despite being in the industry for decades.

Once considered a career exclusive to men, the barbering landscape has shifted to accommodate and welcome a growing list of women who share the same passion and skill as their male counterparts.

Mid-way through her brief career as a stylist, Lucinda was approached about shadowing Craig, who had recently set up Ragged Ass Barbers in the city. At the time, she was unsure about transitioning from stylist to barber, but after spending countless hours observing Craig at work, she decided to take the leap.

This list includes Lucinda Leontowich, a 25-year-old Saskatchewanian, born and raised on a farm near Ituna. Lucinda is the most recent addition to the roster of barbers at Regina’s Ragged Ass Barbers (http://www.raggedassbarbers.com/). “The name really suits us,” she shared. “We are the most random group of people, but we’re also like a big family. I definitely feel like one of the gang.” “It’s a place where people can hang out and chat,” she said of the shop’s open-concept design. “We want our customers to feel comfortable and Craig has really created a community here.”

“Four years ago, barbering wasn’t really a thing here,” said Lucinda. “I would go and watch [Craig] work for hours. I learned so much from him, and I’m still learning today. I love change and I love challenge.” Working as the shop’s only female barber has been a decidedly positive experience for Lucinda. Not surprisingly, clients are intrigued by and interested in her career choice and she fields all kinds of questions from them.

Lucinda joined Ragged Ass Barbers last October, just as the shop was moving to its current downtown location above Victoria’s Tavern (2 – 1965 Hamilton Street). And while she may be considered new to the team, Lucinda’s affinity for and fascination with hair long precedes her decision to formally pursue barbering. Growing up, Lucinda was often called upon to cut and colour hair for friends, family, and neighbours. She learned early on just how important hair – like fashion – is for individuality and creative expression. “I’ve always had this attitude about being different,” said Lucinda. “I think people should wear what they want to wear and have their hair however they want it. It’s just hair – it grows back.” After graduating from hair school, Lucinda FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 5, MAY 2016 | 7

I’d have to say the most rewarding part of my job is when I receive a really strong handshake from a client after a haircut. You can feel the confidence and there’s something super satisfying about that. “At least once a week someone asks me if I’m the only girl [barber] in the shop and what that’s like,” said Lucinda. “There have been times when a client asks to see a male barber instead of me, but that doesn’t bother me much. I just remind myself that that’s their opinion and that they haven’t had a chance to see my work and what I’m capable of. There are a lot of guys out there who would actually prefer that a woman cuts their hair, too.” Besides the obvious benefit of offering clients an informed female perspective on cut, shape, and style, Lucinda has also found that her training as a salon stylist has given her a competitive advantage and helped her to develop her personal flair as a barber. “I was a bit tentative in the beginning, but I think I’ve really proven myself,” she explained. “Because I worked as a stylist, I know how to finish a hair cut differently – especially when it comes to the top of the head. Every day I’m able to apply what I’ve learned.” When asked about the most rewarding aspect of her work as a barber, Lucinda’s answer was somewhat unexpected. “I’d have to say the most rewarding part of my job is when I re8 |

ceive a really strong handshake from a client after a haircut. You can feel the confidence and there’s something super satisfying about that.” There is scientific evidence to support that good health and hygiene and an appealing appearance have positive impacts on self-esteem and self-image. Most of us are familiar with the “look good, feel good” philosophy and few would contest the pleasures of a “good hair day.” Lucinda endorses this philosophy and finds it both personally and professionally rewarding that she is able to use her skills to bolster confidence and satisfaction in the men and women she works with. “It’s so rewarding, the confidence boost you see in people’s eyes. Men have to deal with a lot of insecurities when it comes to hair: things like widow’s peaks and receding hair lines. When they feel good, you can see it. That’s why I remind my clients to remember the way they feel after a cut or a shave and to make sure they come back more often!” Lucinda also takes great satisfaction out of educating her clients about everything from styling tips and techniques, to why a certain cut is better suited for some than it is for others.

Every few months, she finds herself flipping through her cosmetology books in search of new ideas or techniques that she can apply at the shop and pass on to those who frequent her chair.

“When you’re around what you want to do, you suddenly become very passionate,” said Lucinda. “I can definitely see myself doing this for a very long time.”

“You hear clients all the time saying that they don’t know how to recreate a look at home,” said Lucinda. “I really enjoy the process of educating my clients and helping them learn how to work their hair in the right direction.”

To stay updated about promotions, workshops, and other shop events, head to Ragged Ass Barbers’ website (http:// www.raggedassbarbers.com/) or follow them on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/Ragged-Ass-Barbers187254248024648/?fref=ts) and Instagram (@raggedassbarbers).

Lucinda is not alone in her commitment to education: in fact, the shop as a whole stands behind the importance of professional development and community building. “One of our goals going forward is to continue to bring barberfocused educators and artists from across Canada into the city to help expand and diversify knowledge and skill sets,” shared Craig. Ragged Ass Barbers is also passionate about men’s health and actively seeks opportunities to facilitate discussions about issues related to mental and physical well-being. The shop is very involved with Movember – a month-long awareness initiative for prostate cancer – and participates in an annual “Shave Off” event at the end of every October.

New and returning customers are encouraged to schedule appointments in advance to guarantee a spot, as timeslots tend to book up quickly. Ragged Ass Barbers appointments are available Fridays (8:00AM – 8:00PM) and Saturdays (8:00AM – 6:00PM), with walk-in hours between 8:00AM and 8:00PM Tuesday through Thursday. To book your next appointment, visit www. raggedassbarbers.com. Any questions for Craig, Lucinda, or the rest of the Ragged Ass Barbers team are welcome at raggedassbarbers@gmail.com).

Women We Won’t Forget Remembering Great Saskatchewan Women

Eleanor Coerr (née Page) May 29, 1922 – November 22, 2010 A wealth of information exists in the public domain about many people. Research yields a treasure trove of interesting details about equally interesting people. Saskatchewan has been the birthplace for many women who have received international attention. Eleanor Coerr, the focus of this article, is an author whose contributions may not be well known to all, but her passion for a culture far removed from her native Saskatchewan has given the world a unique perspective on one of history’s saddest events. The atomic bombs which fell on Japan at the end of the second world war had severe consequences for families caught up in the aftermath. They produced stories which should never be forgotten. Coerr found unique ways to communicate the effects of these events that still resonate with us today. Eleanor Coerr was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and raised in Saskatoon. As a child, she liked to think up and read new stories. Through her best friend in high school, who was born to Japanese immigrants, she developed an interest in calligraphy, Japanese food, and origami. She was exposed to pictures of Japanese scenery and told many of her friends that she wished to visit Japan one day. She went on to attend the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Later, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English from American University and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Maryland. After graduation she worked as a newspaper reporter and editor for a children’s column. She also taught children’s literature at Monterey Peninsula College and creative writing at Chapman College in California. In 1949, Coerr was the only person who applied to the Ottawa Journal newspaper to be a foreign correspondent reporting on conditions in postwar Japan. As there were no civilian ships or planes going to Japan at that time, she embarked on a Dutch freighter to take up her new job. She lived with a Japanese farm family in a remote rural setting prior to moving to Hiroshima. 12 |

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 5 ISSUE 5, MAY 2016

By Roger MacPherson

Upon arriving in Hiroshima, she was emotionally unprepared for the devastation she encountered. She was later inspired to share her impressions from a unique and personal perspective. In the 1950’s, Eleanor continued her writing while traveling to postings with her husband and two sons. The family lived in California, the Philippines and Taiwan, returning to Japan in 1963. Back in Hiroshima, she was enthralled and mesmerized by the recently finished Peace Park built in the centre of the city. The park featured the statue of a young girl whose name was Sadako. The monies to build the park and the statue had been raised in part by Sadako’s friends and schoolmates. They had published a collection of letters to raise funds for a memorial dedicated to her and to all the children who had died from the bomb. Sadako’s Story

Sadako was 2 years old when the bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. Her home in Hiroshima was about one mile from Ground Zero. Nine years later, in November 1954, she developed swellings on her neck and behind her ears. In January 1955, purple spots had formed on her legs. At 12 years of age Sadako was diagnosed with leukemia, (her mother referred to it as “atom bomb disease”). She was hospitalized on February 21, 1955, and given at most, one year to live. She spent her time in a nursing home folding origami paper cranes hoping to complete one thousand of them. She was inspired by the

Japanese legend that promised to the one who created a thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish. Sadako’s wish; simply to live. In this retelling of her story, it is said that Sadako managed to fold only 644 cranes before she became too weak to continue and died on the morning of October 25, 1955. Her friends and family helped finish her dream by folding the rest of the cranes which were buried with her. In 1958, a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane was unveiled in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Every year on Obon Day, which is a holiday in Japan dedicated to remembering the departed spirits of one’s ancestors, thousands of people leave paper cranes near the statue. At the foot of the statue is a plaque that reads: “This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace on Earth

Eleanor Coerr was inspired to write the book ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.’ It was published in 1977.(Penguin Group Books.) The story evokes hope that events such as those which happened in Japan at the close of the war shall never be repeated. The book has spawned web sites, lesson plans and popularized origami. It also inspired works of music, theatre and ballet. (Source: Wikipedia)

A footnote to the story of Sadako; The claim in the book that Sadako “died before completing the 1000 cranes, and her friends completed the task, placing the finished cranes in her casket” ..is not supported by her surviving family members. According to her family and her older brother Masahiro Sasaki, Sadako actually exceeded folding more than 644 cranes. She died after folding approximately 1,300 paper cranes. Mr. Sasaki and the family have donated some of Sadako’s cranes at places of importance around the world such as New York City at the 9-11 memorial, and at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. We can speculate that Sadako’s story as told by Coerr, commands a larger audience today because of the book. Coerr’s later work included writing children’s books, philanthropic deeds, and giving lectures at universities in the U.S. and overseas. She produced a legacy that reaches far beyond her native Saskatchewan and continues to speak to future generations about an event that changed world history. We can be proud that our province has produced persons of such passion and talent. Eleanor Coerr died on November 22, 2010 at the age of 88.

What Can Golf Teach You About Retirement Planning?

organization and storage solutions for your home or office Tips for your Family Room: •

• •

Use furniture pieces with storage, like an end table with a drawer or shelf, a storage ottoman, or a TV stand with media storage. Minimize clutter by storing newspapers, magazines, and DVDs inside closed storage. Incorporate display shelves to hold your most important keepsakes. Re-locate rarely used items to another room.

If you’re a golfer, you know the joys (and occasional frustrations) of the game. But you might not realize that some of the lessons you learn on the links can carry over to other areas of your life – such as retirement planning. So whether you’re already retired or are planning to retire in the next few years, consider the following suggestions:

Bev Chandler Professional Organizer

Any Questions? Call, text or email 306-536-8844 b.chandler@ccorganizing.ca • www.ccorganizing.ca

Try to overcome the “yips.” When you miss those short puts – the ones you know you should be making – you might be in the grip of your old friend, the “yips.” As you know, it’s not always easy to shake this problem, but many golfers have benefited by working to improve their concentration, especially by adhering to a strict pre-shot and in-shot step-by-step routine. When investing for retirement, or managing their portfolios during retirement, many people can get the investment version of the yips – that is, they get nervous during market downturns, and then they make mistakes, such as selling quality investments when their price has dropped. (Remember the first rule of investing: Buy low and sell high.) To overcome this type of yips, the solution is the same as for golf: Maintain your focus and concentrate on making appropriate moves, such as building and maintaining a diversified portfolio that’s suitable for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. Forget about that hole-in-one. It’s every golfer’s dream: a hole-in-one. When you tee up on that tempting par 3, and you’re feeling good, you might just want to go for it – but when you do, you could end up overshooting the green or plunking into the water. Many investors also try for a “hole-in-one,” in the form of pursuing that one “hot” stock that’s going to make them rich. However, by the time they hear about such a stock (if it even exists), it may have already cooled off – and, in any case, it might not be right for their needs. Instead of looking for that ultimate, one-time winner, look for solid investments that you’d be comfortable holding for the long term. Study the course. The more you know about a course you’re going to play, the better off you will be. You can plan the approaches you’ll take on various holes and think about how to avoid the sand, water and rough. When planning for your retirement, even when you’re living it, you also need a strategy, one that PMSor5535 addresses questions such as these: How can I structure my investment mix to provide me with a long-term income stream? How much should I withdraw from my portfolio each year? Am I doing all I can to control investment-related taxes?

Visualize. Consider these words from World Golf Hall of Famer Nick Faldo: “Visualization is the most powerful thing we have.” If you can visualize what you want to do on each hole you play, you are well on your way toward a successful round. The same idea holds true for retirement planning: If you can envision the type of retirement lifestyle you want, you may have better chance of reaching it by sticking with appropriate financial and investment strategies. Black So, there you have them – some ideas that play well on the golf course and in the retirement arena. Put them to work soon.

Summer Love Hair Tips

By Joy Tesch at Visions Salon and Spa

Put away your heavy coats and boots and dig out those dresses and open-toed shoes! I am sure we are all excited that summer is finally here! Here are a few tips to keep your hair healthy and shiny-looking all summer long. Just as the seasons change, so does our hair. It seems that now is the time when we are all on our way to visit our stylist to try something new. Whether it is for some highlights/baby lights/ balayage or ombre, everyone seems to be going lighter! If you do decide to go a little lighter it can tend to be a bit drier than normal; throw some sun in the mix and your hair can be left feeling like straw! Be proactive! Make sure to use a sulphate-free hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Before using any hot tools, use a hydrating cream/oil or heat protectant to defend your hair from further damage. If you know that you will be spending the day in the sun, throw on a hat or put your hair in a braid to help battle the sun beams from breaking down the proteins in your hair. If you are a sun goddess and hate hats, toss in a deep conditioner in your hair prior to sun exposure, and let the heat of the sun help the product penetrate deeper in your hair cuticle. If you spend every weekend at the lake, make sure to pick up a purifying shampoo. Most of the time, the water in our cabins are packed with minerals, which can create a mineral build up in our hair. Use a purifying/clarifying shampoo to avoid any type of buildup. Remember to get trims ladies! There’s only so much products can do if your ends are already crispy. Next time you’re in the salon, treat yourself to a deep conditioner treatment: your scalp and hair will love you for it! Normally, when you do book in for a treatment you also get an extra-long scalp massage, it’s a win-win situation! I hope these tips will help to keep your hair feeling healthy and looking gorgeous all summer long! Happy Hair Days!

JAMES READ TAN By Sara Lindsay

From London England, James Read is a professional in the tanning world, and an expert in the healthy option of self-tan: “Over my years as a professional spray tan artist, I have been privileged to work with some of the most incredible people. From the world’s best photographers; amazing designers like Tom Ford, Burberry and Sophia Webster; the most beautiful women such as Lara Stone and Rosie Huntingdon Whitely; and other incredible talents like Ellie Goulding and Cara Delevingne,” (James Read, founder). James Read Tan is the only tanning range formulated and headed by a self tan expert. I love that he offers several products within the line to suit different needs. There is a wash off tan, which would be something you would wear for one night out and wash off. There are beautiful 1-5 hour developing formulas in a mousse or fine mist spray that allow you to decide if you want a light golden glow, a medium tan or deep bronze shade. Two challenges I have found with other self tan lines are tackiness on the skin, and an unpleasant odour. James Read has neither of these as it actually offers a very lovely aroma. I also love the option of the Gradual Face & Gradual Body formulas which do just that - lightly and subtly build a tan with daily application. As a lover of beautiful packaging, I’m very impressed with the gorgeous ‘art deco’ inspired design. As self tanning products are sometimes tricky to use, I love the tips James Read offers on his website. For example: “Using the Instant Bronzing Mist, start from the face and then work down your body, leaving the hands and feet until last. The trick is to apply one layer, wait 30 minutes and then apply a second. Leave this on for eight hours and then wash it off. The next day, mix two teaspoons of gradual tan with a dollop of rich moisturizer. Then, using a make-

up brush, buff the mixture down the fronts of your legs, shoulders and décolleté basically the areas where the sun would naturally hit. Leave this on for three hours then wash off. This will add depth to the top layer of your tan and help the light reflect off your skin,” (James Read). We are proud to have launched James Read Tan in-store for Spring 2016!

Our services include: makeup lessons and applications, lash extensions, regular, gel polish manicures and pedicures and gel nail extensions. We also now offer facial and body waxing. I offer private makeup lessons for any woman wishing to update or change her look, or just wanting to learn how to apply her own makeup. NOW BOOKING ONLINE ON OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK.

A letter from your local REALTOR® by Jessica Forbes Dear: Home Buyer or Seller:

ASK YOUR POTENTIAL LISTING AGENT TO DISCUSS:

I am writing to you because I know you are wondering whether it is in your best interest to consider hiring me to help you buy or sell a property. Rightfully so. You have the same mentality as most, as you work hard for your income and the sale or purchase of a home is one of the most significant financial transactions that you will undertake in your lifetime. With this in mind, I can fully understand why you would have reservations about choosing to hire me. You have available at your fingertips, universal resources of information and websites to reference home listings, and you have most likely encountered companies encouraging alternative options to hiring a professional REALTOR®.

The stages of the transaction from start to finish

I can respect the difficulty in trying to decide on what is the most economical way to sell your home when you have been reassured by For Sale By Owner companies to tackle your own sale with tempting tag phrases like: “Save Money on Commission” or “Successfully Sell Your Own Home.” You will be led to believe this is an easy “Do It Yourself” process, but are you sure you want to experiment on the sale of your home to find out if you’re any good at being a Real Estate Agent? Your home is one of your largest resources. Please trust that we are here to help you as we are investing in this journey too. If you are doubtful of this statement, I understand. For Sale by Owner companies, along with low rate commission brokers, have you uncertain of which service is best for you. If you are considering hiring a REALTOR®, I have included a list of guidelines to consider when interviewing your prospective agent. These are topics for you to review in order to ensure you feel confident about the Real Estate Agent(s) in question. I cannot vouch for every single REALTOR® in the local professional community, but I can only hope that each agent will handle their business and clients with care and integrity. Here are discussion topics to go through when choosing your potential Real Estate Agent.

ASK YOUR POTENTIAL BUYING AGENT TO DISCUSS:

Knowledge of unadvertised and advertised inventory

In-house properties for sale, back pocket options, motivated sellers

FSBO Purchase (risks, disclosure & liability)

Negotiation tools

Paperwork and Closing Tasks

Database of Real Estate Colleagues

The stages of the transaction from start to finish

I encourage you to seek a REALTOR® to assist you in order to satisfy all the requirements of the process. In utilizing this service, this will ensure the proper completion of the transaction. Furthermore a REALTOR® has the ability to host a governed sale or purchase of a home under a brokerage which is following Real Estate Association and Commission Regulations. You as a home purchaser or seller will be pleased with your decision in hiring a REALTOR® when you achieve your best selling price and lowest days on market possible in lieu of our expertise and resources in this line of work. Not only that, but by leaving it up to a professional, it ensures that you can focus on your daily life, job and time with your family. Sincerely, Your Local Real Estate Agent P.S. FSBO websites will sell you a lawn sign and a web page. A REALTOR® gets paid for results!

FIVE SASKATCHEWAN PARKS TO VISIT THIS SUMMER

Traveling locally is just as rewarding as traveling globally. In anticipation of the coming hot summer days and late night sunsets, I’ve been eyeing up the map to decide which parks I want to explore this season. With so many diverse eco-regions in the province, there’s no shortage of choices for parks to explore and activities to try. Here are my top five parks to visit this summer in Saskatchewan: 1. Lac La Ronge Provincial Park Take a road trip north until the highway ends at Lac La Ronge Provincial Park. Set amongst the jack pines, spruces and larches of the boreal forest, Saskatchewan’s largest park is home to more than 100 lakes. It’s also the location of one the highest waterfalls in the province. At 10 meters high, Nistowiak Falls, aptly named after the Cree word for “covergence of waters,” mark the point where the waters of Lac La Ronge enters the Churchill River. 2. Pine Cree Regional Park Cozily tucked into a valley between Shaunavon and Eastend is Pine Cree Regional Park. The headwaters of Swift Current Creek bubble through the 30 campsites set amongst the pine trees and poplars. There are a few small hikes leading into the hills to enjoy, and a reconstruction of the Hermit’s Cave where a geologist lived in the 1960s.

3. Pike Lake Provincial Park If you live in Saskatoon, you don’t have to travel far to reach this provincial park. One of Saskatchewan’s Oxbow lakes, Pike Lake is perfect to enjoy a quick city getaway for a day or the whole weekend. Most unique and only a short hike from the lake are desert-like sand dunes left behind from the South Saskatchewan River. 4. Grasslands National Park Go where the buffalo roam in southern Saskatchewan and spend the night in a real teepee in the Frenchman Valley Campground in Grasslands National Park. Spend the day on a self-drive Saskatchewan safari spotting the variety of grassland animals. Don’t forget to keep a sharp eye out for those prairie rattlesnakes. 5. Last Mountain Regional Park If bird watching is your passion, you’ve come to the right place at Last Mountain Regional Park, not far north of Regina. Home to the oldest bird sanctuary in North America, there’s also an opportunity to visit the only migratory bird banding station in Saskatchewan, which is open daily to the public.

Suffering from insatiable wanderlust, Ashlyn George is a freelance writer and photographer who has traveled through nearly 50 countries on 6 continents. 1/2 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder 1 egg yolk

1 1/2 cups white sugar 2 eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ice water, or more if needed

1 cup mashed ripe bananas

3/4 cup fresh blueberries

1 (16 ounce) container cream cheese frosting

Directions:

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Place butter cubes in the freezer for 15 minutes. 2. Whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Sprinkle in Chinese five-spice powder. 3. Cut in frozen butter using a pastry cutter until the butter pieces are about the size of peas. Mix in egg yolk and continue cutting in until thoroughly combined. Drizzle in ice water and stir to combine. The dough should just come together when pinched between your fingers. 4. Pour about 3/4 of the crumb mixture into an ungreased 9x9-inch baking dish. Press the mixture down firmly using the back of a spoon. Spread blueberries in one layer and sprinkle with remaining crumbly dough.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the sour cream and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; stir into the batter. Finally, mix in the mashed banana. Spread evenly into the prepared pan. 3. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow bars to cool completely before frosting with the cream cheese frosting.

5. Bake in the preheated oven until the top is golden and sides are crisp and browned, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool completely before serving.

DISCOUNTS, REBATES AND “PROGRAMS”, OH MY! “The Spring Selling Season is here and all of the manufacturers will be ramping up incentives. There are so many thrown around that even experts in the business have a hard time keeping up with them. Be aware that all available programs have conditions. Some programs might only run for a few days in a month, so If you see the vehicle you’re interested in being advertised with incentives, be sure to bring the ad or a screenshot with you when you visit.” BREAKING DOWN THE TERMINOLOGY: 1 Discounts apply before applicable taxes and represent the greatest savings component of the “drive away” price that was discussed in one of our previous articles. 2 Rebates are generally taken off after taxes are applied. Some rebates are only available to certain customers. Ex: the “truck loyalty” or “conquest” rebate that Ram is offering right now gives an extra $1500 rebate after tax only if you currently have a truck registered to you. Bear this in mind to avoid any disappointments. 3 Subvented interest rates, are offered on many makes and models. These can be as low as 0%. Often, when payments are advertised, they are shown using these subvented rates over a long term to make the

payment as low as possible. The catch here is that you need to qualify for a subvented rate and that is based on credit history. The acronym ’O.A.C.’ (On Approved Credit) usually accompanies advertised payments with these programs. In other words, although the payment is offered to everyone, only those with acceptable credit history qualify to receive it. Remember that discounts, rebates and subvented rates are usually mutually exclusive. This means one or the other is offered, but not both together. 4 ‘Stackable’ is the term used when all or many programs are added together to produce the greatest price reductions. When programs are stackable, that’s ‘Car shopping nirvana! You get the best of everything; big pre-tax cash discounts, after tax rebates, and subvented interest rates, all applied to the same vehicle purchase. Bear this in mind as you shop and be sure to ask not only about the program details, but if they are also ‘stackable’. At Auto Clearing we have a Vehicle Buyer’s Checklist available on our site at www.autoclearing.com under the “Shopping” drop down menu on the homepage and also on all “View Details” inventory pages. …and, …Good luck with your shopping!
