Editor’s Note

The May Long weekend has passed, so you know that those warm summer days are just around the corner. You may have a fridge covered in wedding invitations, an inbox full of notifications for showers and events, a calendar jam-packed with soccer practices or final concerts, and a countdown until the last day of school. June seems to go by in such a blur, but hopefully the anticipation of summer holidays, evenings by the fire, or time spent with people you haven’t seen in a while is enough to keep you pushing through it. Don’t forget to schedule free time. For the last couple of years, my husband and I found ourselves at the age where all our friends, siblings or cousins were getting married. Some summers we had 8 or 10 weddings! When you add in bachelorette parties and showers, the weekends got booked up pretty quickly. We learned it’s ok to politely decline an invitation and instead stay home to enjoy our own back yard. It may seem strange to plan for no plan, but sometimes it’s necessary to keep from having such a hectic schedule that you forget to have a good time. Saskatchewan summers are too wonderful to let them pass by unappreciated, so go grab a cold beverage, a copy of PINK, and take half an hour to sit outside and savour one of our spectacular sunsets and the time for YOU! This September, Regina’s GMS Queen City Marathon will celebrate its seventeenth anniversary. Slated for Friday, September 8th through Sunday, September 10th, the event—which has grown considerably since it was first conceived in the winter of 2000—will embody what Race Director Shawn Weimer believes is the essence of QCM. “Queen City Marathon has a race for every pace,” he shares. “Everybody can participate; it doesn’t matter how fast you go. You can run, walk, or roll your way across the finish line.” After the discontinuation of the Molson Marathon in 1983, Regina went without a large scale road race for the better part of two decades. It was not until a group of local runners, during a lap around the city’s iconic Wascana Lake, decided it was time to organize a new and improved event to help Regina join the ranks of Canadian capital cities with a signature marathon. The first QCM took place on September 23rd, 2001; it comprised a full marathon, marathon team relay, and a kid-friendly mini-marathon. With an initial attendance goal of 600, the QCM’s volunteer committee was blown away when nearly 1,300 men, women, and children showed up on that first crisp fall morning. From that point on, the QCM has enjoyed steady growth and an increasing national and international profile. Since moving to its current location outside the impressive, historic Conexus Arts Centre in 2015, the QCM has skyrocketed in popularity. Last year, attendance grew to over 6,000 participants. Shawn has aims of increasing that number again in 2017. “Our event has grown by more than 28% of the past five years,

Today, the event includes its original line-up, alongside a growing list of other activities: a half-marathon, 10K, Family 5K and, for the first time ever, a Night Owl 5K, scheduled for the evening of Friday, September 8th. “This year’s new night race is a non-competitive event. All participants will receive headlamps and we encourage everyone to dress up in glow-in-the-dark clothing. Come out and have a fun time!” Shawn also drove home the fact that while the running and walking events are technically the “stars of the show,” there is plenty more for singles, groups, and families to do over the three-day race weekend. Food trucks, music, vendors, and the ever-popular Family Zone are all available to the general public. “Our goal is to encourage people to recognize [the Queen City Marathon] is open to all, and that our running community is a reflection of the community we live in,” says Shawn. “We continue to find and build a race for everyone.” To this end, Kaytlyn Criddle—last year’s female marathon winner and a decorated athlete—agrees. The Regina local is always on the move, traveling both for sport and for pleasure; although her passport is full of stamps, she still maintains the city and QCM are “very special” to her. “For years, I didn’t actually run the QCM because it coincided with the start of the university cross-country season,” says Kaytlyn, who spent five years competing as part of the University of Regina Cougars’ track and field team. “Instead, I was a cheerleader and an unofficial picture taker. The great thing about the

I truly believe that anyone can be a runner. Your background, career, how many times a week you exercise… none of those should be barriers. We have such a wonderful and supportive running community here; everyone wants to see you succeed. with runners traveling from across Canada, North America, and around the world,” says Shawn, who has served as Race Director since 2014, but has been involved with the QCM in various capacities since its early days. “The race fosters fitness within our community, both physically and mentally. Running and walking helps you develop physically but can also help you clear your thoughts and is a very social thing.” With the help of new title sponsor GMS and a host of other corporate and community benefactors, the QCM will deliver another fun, fitness-focused weekend this fall. “We strive to give back to the community,” Shawn explains. “Over 25 community groups and charities directly benefit from the event, receiving money and free entries. Many also get an opportunity to showcase their organization to our runners and spectators.” What’s more, because the event draws such a large crowd, it is an important economic driver for our community, celebrating Regina as a tourist destination in its own right, and not just a stop along the way. 6 |

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 6 ISSUE 6, JUNE 2017

QCM is how it really brings our community together; there are so many different ways to be involved and participate.” Following graduation, Kaytlyn was eager to join the thousands of participants at the QCM’s starting line. She described her first full marathon attempt in 2015 as “a bit disappointing,” attributing her poor performance to an underappreciation of the time and commitment required to run such a long-distance race. She returned in 2016 with renewed confidence and motivation. This time, she powered through the crowds and brought home a gold medal. For Kaytlyn, her win was particularly sentimental. She ran the 2016 full marathon to honour the memory of Wade Moffatt, a friend and active member of Regina’s running community. Kaytlyn and Wade met in 2008 through the Jaleta Pacers (http:// www.jaletapacers.com), a performance-based distance running group she said was instrumental in giving her the confidence to one day run a marathon. “Everyone in the running community knew and loved Wade; he was a very motivating and positive person. When he died, my

potties.” Kaytlyn’s character-defining ambition is not limited to her time on the track; it is also prevalent in her professional life. She served as Vice-President of the Cultural Anthropology Students’ Association while pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Regina, and recently completed a Master’s in Public Administration from the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. Kaytlyn intends to build a career in policy development, but has no intentions of retiring from running. “Physical activity always has been and always will be a huge part of my life. I see so many parallels between running and life in general. You just have to keep going; there are always going to be obstacles—in races and in life—but persevere and it will be worth it in the end.” “For me, there are two reasons why I run,” she continues. “Of course, there’s the physical part. I am really competitive, and I like to see how far I can push my body. But the other, important part of it is mental health. Running keeps me balanced. If something is going on in my life that I need to think through, I’ll go on a nice, long, easy run to process my thoughts. If I’m feeling stressed or anxious, I’ll do a hard run and try not to think at all. Those runs clear my mind and are, in a way, meditative.”

best friend Karen [Lawson] and I resolved to run the QCM, and to do it for Wade. It’s what kept me going all summer. To bring home a win that day was a really emotional but positive experience—for me and for his family, who also ran in his memory.” Both Kaytlyn and Karen medaled that day, qualifying the pair for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Kaytlyn confirmed the Boston experience was unlike anything she’d experienced before, but conceded she found the crowds overwhelming and a bit challenging to navigate. She returned home with a profound, deepened respect for all that QCM offers runners and the community at large. “Looking back, I’m so happy I did [the Boston Marathon]— it’s such an iconic event—but it also made me appreciate so many great things about the QCM,” she explains. “You see so many faces you know throughout the race; it’s a more familiar course; and the terrain is obviously pretty flat compared to other courses, so you can go for a personal record. The event takes place in September, which is really the perfect temperature and time of year for training. And you aren’t faced with the same big crowds that you’d find in races like Boston; you’re pretty free to run wherever you need to—including water stations and port-a8 |

Kaytlyn and her fiancé make every effort to get outside and be active; so active, in fact, the couple is planning their honeymoon around an international mountain triathlon in Hawaii later this year. “An active lifestyle has always been very important to me, and to my family,” she says. “It’s very social, too. Not only do I get out and exercise, but I get to spend quality time with my good friends who are also runners.” For those considering running in this year’s QCM, Kaytlyn recommends tapping into the city’s vibrant and ultra-supportive running community. She named the Running Room, Regina Road Runners, and Jaleta Pacers as just a few of the resources available to aspiring or established runners. “I truly believe that anyone can be a runner. Your background, career, how many times a week you exercise… none of those should be barriers. We have such a wonderful and supportive running community here; everyone wants to see you succeed. I’d definitely encourage anyone to sign up for one of the QCM’s events. I guarantee you’ll love it and keep coming back!”

SPIRIT MATTERS by Kelly Green

Mothers and Mothering Every May we honour our mothers- biological, step, foster. And the faces and styles of our mothers are varied and diverse. The mothering we received provides one of the most powerful templates for our lives and even shapes our brain! But what if mothering transcends mothers? What if a broader definition of mothering refers to an energy that allows for another person to thrive and bloom? Can we not all protect, defend, teach, encourage, nurture? As a woman, think of all the ways you have and you can offer this mothering energy, regardless of whether you’re an actual mother. Let’s all be a part of mothering ourselves, our families, students, workplaces, communities and even our planetary mama, Earth!

At long last, summer is almost here — which may mean it’s time to put together your traveling plans. Still, while you and your family may enjoy going a summertime trip, there’s one part of your life that should not go on vacation — and that’s your investment portfolio.

Tips for the Cottage: •

Use an ottoman to store games and puzzles.

Keep clean bedding in a drawer in each bedroom.

Use wall hooks or a wardrobe for extra hanging space.

Allocate a snack cupboard for easy access.

Utilize a shed for fishing gear, outdoor games and lawn chairs.

Don’t Let Investments Take a Vacation

So, what can you do to help your investments keep on working all year long, year in and year out? Here are a few suggestions:

PALAZZO OUTDOOR

Don’t chase after “hot” investments. Many times, you will hear about a “hot” investment, usually a stock. However, by the time you hear about such an investment, it may already be cooling off. Even more importantly, it might not have been appropriate for your needs — and any investment that has either “flamed out” or wasn’t right for you in the first place will not be a “hard worker” in your portfolio. Monitor “lazy” investments. Under the right circumstances, just about any investment could be of value to you. However, under different scenarios, those same investments may not be doing as much for you. To cite one example, when interest rates are at historic lows, as has been the case recently, and your portfolio contains a relatively large amount of short-term fixed-rate vehicles whose interest payments don’t even keep up with inflation, they could be considered “lazy” investments. Look for the “multi-taskers.” In most aspects of life, “multi-taskers” are valuable — and it’s the same in the investment world. Can you find a particular type of investment that may be able to achieve multiple goals at the same time? Consider dividend-paying stocks. If you need the income to supplement your cash flow, you can cash the dividend checks. And since some companies tend to increase their dividends, your investment in these stocks can serve as a source of potential for rising income, helping keep you ahead of inflation. Furthermore, if you don’t actually need the dividends to support your income stream, you can reinvest them to increase your ownership stake — a method of building your overall wealth. Finally, many dividend-paying stocks also offer significant growth potential. Keep in mind, though, that there are no guarantees, because companies can lower or discontinue their dividends at any time. And, as you know, stocks are subject to market risk, including the potential loss of principal invested. PMS 5535

Don’t take a “time out” from investing. The financial markets regularly move up and down. During the down times, it’s important not to get so discouraged that you decide to take a “time out” from investing until “things get better.” No one can really predict when a downturn will end, but you don’t want to be on the investment sidelines when the market turns around — because the biggest gains can occur in the early stages of a rally. And in any case, if you’re not constantly investing, or at least exploring new investment opportunities, your portfolio could begin to stagnate — or even become “unbalanced,” in which case it may no longer fit your objectives or your risk tolerance. Black

By following the above suggestions, you can help keep your investments working for you this summer — as well as fall, winter and spring. The road toward achieving your financial goals is a long one — so try to keep moving.

THE POWER OF THE PLANK by Holly Barker

Yes, it’s true. Before you can see your abdominal muscles, diet comes first. But core strength and abdominal conditioning proves to benefit your daily life in many more aspects than just getting 6-pack abs. Conditioning your core aids in a strong foundation for all movements in and out of the gym, and will help prevent injury and alleviate pain that is often caused from a weak core and poor posture. Implementing a few core exercises throughout your week can lead to a better posture, better athletic performance, decreased risk of injury in and out of the gym and a healthier, happier, more enjoyable life! To crank up your core this summer, implement this plank series at the beginning of your training routine. Do this and enjoy the benefits, added strength, confidence, and clarity that being healthy and fit brings! <3 Repeat Moves below in sequence 4 times through: The Plank Series

• Basic Plank – In a push up position, form a straight line from your head to your toes. Keep your pelvis tucked, your spine and neck neutral and shoulders relaxed and away from your neck. Breathe and hold for 60 seconds. 12 |

• Can be performed from elbows or in a full push up press. • Optional - Basic Plank w/ Mountain Climber – Elevate the Basic Plank by dropping your body down to a push up position, elbows bent, and reaching one knee towards the same side elbow. Repeat one side after the other. Perform 10 touches per side with quick switches from side to side. • Side Plank - Position on your side, elevated with your elbow on the ground below your shoulder, form a straight line from head to toe. Position feet parallel, one on top of the other. Breathe and hold for 60 seconds. • Side Plank Reach – Elevate the Side Plank by reaching straight up with your top arm and leg. Perform 10 reaches per side, holding at the top and coming back down to the Variation 1 - Side Plank - each time. • Optional –Side Plank w/ Knee Touch – Elevate the Side Plank by dropping your top elbow and raising your top knee towards each other. Perform 10 reaches per side, holding at the crunch and coming back to Variation 1 – Side Plank – each time.

All of the above can be done anywhere and anytime. Enjoy your strength and embrace your success each day! The ability to perform, to take care of yourself and to be the best version of you is something that we should all celebrate. I wish you a beautiful June and I shall see you all in July!

MIX IT UP By Sara Lindsay

I am a big fan of cream and liquid based cosmetics. I also love multi-use products and these days, we’re seeing more and more of them in modern cosmetic brands. Many of our guests are uneasy about using cream products because they used to be quite oil-rich and heavy, which made them difficult to work with and left the skin very shiny. There’s a very big difference between shiny and luminous! Today’s cream formulas are light and luminous and can be used with fingertips or brushes to apply. I use blush on the lips, lipsticks on the cheeks and both on the eyes where safe. I love to mix textures; I blend creams and liquids to create very translucent to very opaque finishes and everything in between. Liquid eye shadows and blushes are wonderful because they set into place and are very long lasting. Creams can be layered to become quite long lasting and bring a certain glow to the skin. There are no rules with makeup and I encourage my guests to play and try things outside of their comfort zone. Just because the label says blush, it doesn’t mean it can’t be used as something else to create something pretty! Here are a few of my favourites. This will be my last column in Pink Magazine as I will be moving on to a new and exciting writing venture, as well as opening a new store location for Fall 2017 at 1856 Hamilton Street. I would like to thank each and every one of you for reading my monthly beauty column over the years. I’ve had wonderful feedback along the way, and have been lucky enough to have met a lot of you. The team at Pink has been so good to me and a joy to work with. The readers are so fabulous, so thank you so much! Tame Those Cowlicks By Joy Tesch at Visions Salon and Spa

Cowlicks can be quite annoying! They have a mind of their own and never seem to do what you want them to do, especially if they are in your bangs! Here are a few tips to help you tame them. 1.

If you have cowlicks in your bangs, make sure when you are getting them cut that they aren’t cut too short. If they are cut too short they stick up too much. A little bit more length/ weight to them will make it easier for you to style.

2.

Style your cowlicks when your hair is wet. If your hair dries with your cowlicks going crazy there is only so much you can do once it’s dry. Blow dry your cowlicks downwards from your hair wet, this will make it easier to manipulate. If

you don’t have time to blow the rest of your hair that’s totally fine, just make sure to blow dry your cowlicks/ problem areas first. 3.

When blow drying your cowlicks use your fingers or a flat brush downwards and then side to side mixing up the directions (but always downwards). Do not use a round brush; this can create more volume and make your cowlick spring up even more.

4.

Product, product, product! Use some paste or hair spray to hold that hair down.

5.

When in doubt, spray your cowlick down with water and try styling them again.

TACKLING THE 75 KILOMETRE WEST COAST TRAIL

If you haven’t added the West Coast Trail in British Columbia, Canada to your bucket list – you might want to. Surprisingly, the 75 kilometre trail through the old-growth forest and along the sandy and rocky beaches of the west coast of Vancouver Island used to be a life saving trail. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, dozens of ships crashed into the rocky shores of the coastline. In 1907, the trail was built to help shipwrecked survivors find their way to safety. But today, as part of Pacific Rim National Park, the West Coast trail is solely used by adventurous backpack-carrying hikers like myself and my two girl friends. Planning the trip months in advance, we flew in from different parts North America to meet and take on the trail together. Backpacks brimming with dehydrated meals, quick-dry athletic clothing, lightweight camping gear and (in my case as a digital storyteller) eight extra pounds of tech equipment to capture our journey, we were ready. The west coast is notorious for its rain, and our hike began with damp weather. The rain turned the forest pathway into a mess of slippery tree roots and mud, sometimes up to our knees. All of us inevitably took turns falling in the mud. But throughout our seven-day adventure, the rainy haze and fog eventually lifted for a few days of sunshine. Along the trail we encountered no less

than 130 bridges, 5 cable cars, countless fallen tree bridges and enough moss-covered ladders to make you happy you never became a firefighter. The beaches were my favourite. Each headland offered a different view around every corner. Waterfalls plummeted down from cliff edges and waves lapped at our feet as we plodded our way through the sand. Sometimes the beaches were hard packed like concrete - other times they were covered in round boulders. And even more intriguing were the piles of monster-like kelp that splayed across the sand, almost like tentacled aliens straight out of a Hollywood horror movie. We based our daily hiking goals conveniently around kilometre markers, viewpoints and the always-important snack break. Every night, we set up camp at a new site along the beach, making friends along the way. Twice, on clear nights, we were able to see billions of stars converging into the Milky Way over our tents. We lit bonfires out of giant pieces of driftwood and dried our wet gear on sticks turned into the soft sand while sharing stories over the fire. The West Coast Trail is one of the most unique and best multiday hikes in the world. It’s challenging, muddy, wet and not for those with a fear of heights. But the accomplishment and enjoyment of spending seven days in the wilderness with your two close friends, makes it an adventure worth every blister.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

Run knife around inside of pan before removing cheesecake.

Top with frosting, broken cookie pieces and the rest of the sprinkles (¼ cup).

Store leftovers in refrigerator.

Make cookie mix as directed on the package using the oil, water and egg.

Spread dough evenly in ungreased 9” round spring form pan.

Bake 20 minutes just until dough is set
