ZÖE Shoes + Objects

Why the Walk Matters: From the Boardroom to ZÖE

Lynn Armstrong, Owner, ZÖE Shoes + Objects, Lynear Thinking Strategy & Communications and SKY Publishers. I can’t say for sure when it started. I think it may be somewhere between the time the wind was created and this very moment. For me, this quest for connection to the bigger ideal is as natural as breathing. It always has been. I have always felt there was something else. Something yet to be discovered. A bigger thing than just me. – Excerpt from How to be a Pink Flamingo in a Brown Duck Pond, By Lynn Armstrong.

Walking in to ZÖE Shoes + Objects is to leave the world behind and become immersed in beautiful shoes and objects, curated in a gallery environment. “That’s the experience we want for our guests,” says owner Lynn Armstrong, “we want our guests to forget the world and just explore and be inspired.” The pristine white walls are lined with shoes placed on specially designed stairways no more and no less than two inches apart. Custom designed tube and clamp fixturing and concrete floors clad with sparkle under 54 tracks of daylight bring each shoe and each object to life. Shoeboxes are housed in a custom built “shoe library”

with an antique rail rescued from a Saskatchewan barn. Beyond architecture and design, there is a solid understanding of why ZÖE exists, and for whom. “The ZÖE customer is the woman or man who appreciates a curated life. They are seekers of the rare and the beautiful and who are not afraid to make an entrance when they walk into a room. ZÖE is the Greek word for life. Our shoes carry people through all the events of their lives.”

ZÖE has undergone a rebirth of its own since Lynn walked in the door, tailored for the modern professional and lover of rare objects, informed by her own career path that traversed journalism, corporate communications, policy, corporate planning and reporting, and leadership in federal and provincial crowns, non-profits and the cooperative worlds. “I learned the value of how to walk into a room as a corporate planner. I was invited to their boardrooms as a facilitator – to assist them in leading their companies up the hill of vision. I have written business plans, strategies and reports, and countless words on what it all means. By watching and working with CEOs and executives, I learned how fashion can be a tool for personal branding and positioning, and FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 7 ISSUE 6, JUNE 2018 | 7

I learned that the cadence of the walk was important, and so were the shoes. how it can influence a person’s confidence to lead and to be a leader. I learned that the cadence of the walk was important, and so were the shoes. For me, fashion has always been a part of the way I show up in the world, and to build my personal confidence as a leader, but also theirs in me. There began my relationship with Zoe’s Boutique.” Now in its 32nd year as a brand in Regina, ZÖE (formerly known as Zoe’s Boutique) has been the place for three generations celebrating events of their lives. “People come to us when something important is happening – a new job, a good day, a bad day . . . sometimes it’s a right of passage from one stage of life to another. And that memory is what sets ZÖE apart in the market place. Our newest jewellery designer Anita Sikma was raised in Saskatchewan and besides being home for her, being seen at ZÖE holds a special place in her heart because it was where she bought her first pair of Fluevogs. ZÖE is a right of passage. My favourite part is when a young woman gets her first pair of shoes from ZÖE.” Lynn entered the world of entrepreneurship in 2011, bringing with her over 15 years of boardroom experience, helping corporate entities climb the hill of vision. Her insights into the corporate workplace have

informed the new ZÖE experience for customers. “The way we look at fashion, from what we wear on our bodies to what we have in our homes is changing. We are much more globally inspired, and average just isn’t good enough. For us, it has to be extraordinary. Our guests come to us from all over the world, and when they come to Regina, they seek us out. Sometimes we meet through our social media or our online store, or through our network of suppliers. ZÖE guests are more interested in self-expression. And they are looking for pieces that set them apart, and they are looking for a relationship, not just a transaction.” “Many times people ask me how I came to own a shoe store, because it seems out of sync with my career, but shoes are another way to helping people go places, and in my life, they have always been both a part of personal empowerment and a metaphor for my own journey as they are for everyone.”

She recounts a telling moment in a field of dirt, when she realized the time would soon come to transition from a corporate career to an entrepreneurial career.

“In May 2010, my daughter Sara arranged a Mother’s Day photo shoot in a field. I was an Acting Vice President at a provincial crown corporation at the time. We drove out to a field with a couch and some props for a family photo shoot. I am a prairie girl and I love the endless blue sky and the smell of fresh spring dirt. I remember standing under the expansive blue sky over a field of dirt as far as the eye could see, and my four inch heels sinking into the soil. I felt grounded in that moment. I knew that day that a new purpose was before me. That the sky was calling me. It was just a matter of time before I would be leaving the corporate world to live in my own vision.” “On the day of emancipation, wear gold shoes.” On June 15, 2011, wearing a navy double breasted suit and gold Ralph Lauren sling backs with a kitten heel, Lynn signed her new incorporation papers for Lynear Thinking Strategy and Communications Ltd. “Wearing gold shoes that day was serendipitous. Gold is the colour of emancipation. Of freedom. Of victory. I wish I could say I planned my shoe choice that day - orchestrated the perfect look for the perfect occasion - but it was pure serendipity. I love serendipity. That was the end of my corporate life and the beginning of my life as an entrepreneur.” “I branded Lynear Thinking in the field of dirt from the Mother’s Day photos, with the message ‘some people stand and look at the sky. We reach out and touch it.’ With the creation of Lynear Thinking, I dedicated myself to helping people – not corporations, get to where they are going.” With a background in corporate planning, strategy and communications, Armstrong began working to create an offering for the private sector. “I learned that in the independent world of business, the story matters, and being able to express it to the community is one of the make or breaks in the world of the independent business owner.”

“I love fashion, and I have what one might say is an irrational love of shoes, but I am not alone in that. People love shoes.” Having a love of journalism and story telling, Lynn became the new publisher and owner of the SKY Magazine brand and created SKY Publishers Ltd. From 2012 to 2016, SKY published quarterly issues and distributed them to 32,000 homes in the Regina area. In December 2014, Armstrong published her first book, “How to be a Pink Flamingo in a Brown Duck Pond,” as well as several blogs on an ongoing basis. In July 2016, she transitioned SKY to a digital format, where it currently lives in order to make way for the new ZÖE and to reassess the print business model. The breaker and maker of things, she has plans to reinvent SKY in 2018 with a new focus. “Telling stories and going places inspired the business model of the new ZÖE Shoes + Objects. I love fashion, and I have what one might say is an irrational love of shoes, but I am not alone in that. People love shoes.” “I also love to build businesses and create experiences. I am not afraid to change something to make it better. That is the best part about being an independent. I don’t have a board of directors,” she says laughing. “I do have a special place in my heart for designers, as my daughter is an emerging designer. Sara and I began this business together. She brought her creative vision to the design, experience and rebrand. She is also our curator and we work together to seek out the best possible pieces for ZÖE.”

Lynn Armstrong took over the brand in February 2016 in the Old City Hall Mall. The boutique was renovated and rebranded “ZÖE”, which, appropriately is the Greek word for “Life.” In the first year of business, Lynn and her daughter / designer Sara redesigned and rebranded the downtown location, but there were limitations to the space. In August, Lynn signed a new lease on 1732 Badham Boulevard, and led the design of the new store, and nine months after walking into the doors of ZÖE, Lynn relocated the store on November 3, 2016. ZÖE is the place where art meets life, where lives are lived and stories are shared. ZÖE features artfully designed shoes originating from all over the world, paired with Canadian objects and apparel, set in a modern industrial design to create a distinctive shopping experience. “Over the past two years, we have worked to create a place where people find unique pieces from shoes that hail from Italy, Spain, Brazil, the United States and Canada.” On the objects side of the collections, we feature Canadian brands and makers, who create one of a kind pieces for your home and life.” “Each piece is a work of art, made to be lived in and loved,” says Lynn. “We select pieces that are rare and special. Whether its shoes, apparel or special objects, we ask ourselves – are they important and special enough to carry our guests through their lives?” ZÖE on 1732 Badham Boulevard is part of the new Canterbury Common development, one block south of College Avenue, off Broad Street, next to the Heritage buildings on the corner of College Avenue and Broad Street. The buildings are designed to fit in with the Heritage architecture and are in the same style and finished with the same dark brick as the existing buildings. “Each person who visits us has a story that brings them to us - graduations, weddings, new jobs, good days, celebrations and even the saddest days. We are very honoured to be a part of our guest’s lives because we know how important the decision is to choose us and trust us.” “Many of our customers come to us from all over Canada and the United States, and as far as Europe, so we launched our online store, www. zoesshoes.com, to create yet another door for our customers to walk through wherever they may be. We are active on Facebook and Instagram as well, making it easy for our guests living very busy lives. But it’s still very personal. When a person purchases something online, they are still working directly with us.” “Come shop the collections and bring only your imagination. We will take care of the rest.” ZÖE Shoes + Objects 1732 Badham Blvd. Regina, Saskatchewan 306.757.0888 www.zoesshoes.com www.instagram.com/zoesshoes www.facebook.com/Zoesshoes2016/ www.lynearthinking.com www.skymagazine.co

The Lost Girl’s Guide to Finding the World

SPENDING A NIGHT IN A GRAIN BIN I’m always in search of unique destinations to stay overnight around the world. I’ve slept in a treehouse in a Laotian forest, in a cave in the Malaysian jungle, in hammocks across Colombia and in a bivy sac under the midnight sun on an Antarctic island. Suffering from insatiable wanderlust, Ashlyn George is an award-winning travel writer and photographer who has travelled through more than 55 countries and onto every continent before the age of 30. In 2015 she travelled 37,000 kilometres across her home province of Saskatchewan as the official personality and travel blogger for the Government of Saskatchewan. Currently she documents her adventures and stories on her blog The Lost Girl’s Guide to Finding the World. Yet right at home here in Saskatchewan, on a small grain farm nine kilometres south of Rosetown, is a lavish grain bin lodging - sans the grain dust. Dubbed “Bincredible, Bin Sweet Bin,” I planned a weekend getaway to experience Saskatchewan’s iconic prairie metal grain bin from a new perspective. In late 2014, April and Darryl Anderson opened Alive Sky Lodge, a bed-and-breakfast located in their farmyard. Two years later, they designed and built the luxury bin to add to their business. It’s a Saskatchewan twist on convertible shipping containers; instead of a sea can, the converted grain bin is complete with a queen size bed, heated flooring, a chandelier and two fireplaces (one of which is in the bathroom). Pulling into the Anderson’s spacious yard late in the afternoon, I quickly spot red Adirondack chairs on the front deck of the grain bin. The bin’s smaller size, the wooden wheel-chair accessible deck and the addition of white-framed windows set it apart from the working grain bins in the farmyard. As I park the vehicle, two tail-wagging pups and a couple of friendly farm cats come wandering over to greet us. I know right away we are going to enjoy our stay. With daylight slipping away and a sunset picnic to be had, April gives us a quick tour of the yard before handing over a basket full of homemade goodies. She recommends we enjoy the sunset at an area set up near the dugout just outside the yard. In our haste, we choose to lay out the blanket and picnic on the edge of the field near a slough. It’s a very Saskatchewan setting, but the view of the cotton candy coloured clouds reflecting off the water reminds me how magical our living skies really are.

FOR SASKATCHEWAN WOMEN | VOL. 7 ISSUE 6, JUNE 2018

To my delight, the two dogs join us, as does one of the cats. It’s a real sunset party. Surprisingly, the cat is the mischief maker, nosing at the container of bagels and lunch meat, curious to sample what’s inside. As the last rays of the sun dip below the horizon, we pack up our picnic and head back to fully explore the bin. With a country-chic aesthetic, the attention to detail and design is what makes it feel so luxurious yet cozy. The bin’s interior is lined with white-washed wooden panels, each hand-cut to fit perfectly all the way to the peaked ceiling. Next to the fireplace, the wood-framed bed is covered with a red-and-white checkered duvet cover. A velvety cowhide rug connects the sleeping space to the marble-topped kitchenette. There’s even a china dish set in the kitchenette cupboards. The bathroom is separated by a wall and sliding barn-style door. Complete with a full tub and a second fireplace and chandelier, it’s an ideal space to spend the night drawing a warm bath and relaxing with a good book. But as the night settles in, the backyard of the bin is calling. There’s a fire pit and a stack of wood waiting to be used for an evening bonfire. We even have maple flavoured marshmallows to roast. I brew up some hot chocolate and we settle back into the Adirondack chairs to enjoy the heat from the flickering flames and a clear view of the stars. This is an experience you can only get in the countryside. After a leisurely sleep-in the next morning, I climb out of bed and sneak outside to grab a second picnic basket waiting on a side table on the bin deck. April has delivered us a hot breakfast in bed. Unwrapping two foil covered containers, the scent of homemade Saskatoon berry and apple crumble makes our mouths water. Pulling out the china dishes from the cupboard, I put together our second picnic of the stay and we dine on the checkered duvet spread. Wanting a special weekend away to escape city life, the short trip west of Saskatoon to Alive Sky Lodge is the perfect getaway. In fact, it could be argued the whole experience is bincredible. HOT HONEY WINGS

MARINATED VEGGIES

INGREDIENTS: • 2 pounds chicken wings, tips discarded • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (add more if you can stand it) • salt and ground black pepper to taste • 1 cup honey • 1/2 cup butter, melted • 1/2 cup hot sauce

INGREDIENTS: • 1/2 cup thickly sliced zucchini • 1/2 cup sliced red bell pepper • 1/2 cup sliced yellow bell pepper • 1/2 cup sliced yellow squash • 1/2 cup sliced red onion • 16 large fresh button mushrooms • 16 cherry tomatoes • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/2 cup soy sauce • 1/2 cup lemon juice • 1/2 clove garlic, crushed

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat and lightly oil grate. 2. Wash the wings well and pat dry with paper towel. Season the meat with cayenne, salt, and pepper. 3. Cook the chicken wings on preheated grill until cooked through and juices run clear, 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the wings. Brush the wings liberally using 1/2 cup of honey while they are cooking. 4. Melt the butter, pour into a large bowl and mix in the remaining 1/2 cup of honey and hot sauce. Remove the wings from the grill and immediately toss them in the hot honey butter sauce to coat. Serve the wings ‘wet’ or return them to the grill for 1 minute per side to set the sauce.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Place the zucchini, red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, squash, red onion, mushrooms, and tomatoes in a large bowl. 2. In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, soy sauce, lemon juice, and garlic. Pour over the vegetables. Cover bowl, and marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat grill for medium heat. 4. Lightly oil grate. Remove vegetables from marinade, and place on preheated grill. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes, or until tender.

CHIPOTLE CRUSTED PORK TENDERLOIN INGREDIENTS: • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 3 tablespoons chipotle chile powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 4 tablespoons brown sugar • 2 (3/4 pound) pork tenderloins DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat grill for medium-high heat. 2. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the onion powder, garlic powder, chipotle chile powder, salt, and brown sugar. Place tenderloins in bag and shake, coating meat evenly. Refrigerate for 10 to 15 minutes. 3. Lightly oil grill grate, and arrange meat on grate. Cook for 20 minutes, turning meat every 5 minutes. Remove from grill, let stand for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing.

An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read between 145 and 150 degrees F (63 degrees C). Let burgers rest for a few minutes before serving.

SIRLOIN KABOBS INGREDIENTS: • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 3 tablespoons distilled white vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt • 1/2 teaspoon garlic pepper seasoning • 4 fluid ounces lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage • 2 pounds beef sirloin steak, cut into 1 1/2 inch cubes • 2 green bell peppers, cut into 2 inch pieces skewers • 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, stems removed • 1 pint cherry tomatoes • 1 fresh pineapple - peeled, cored and cubed DIRECTIONS: 1. Reserve about 1/2 cup of this marinade for basting. Place steak in a large resealable plastic bag. Cover with the remaining marinade, and seal. Refrigerate for 8 hours, or overnight. 2. Bring a saucepan of water to a boil. Add green peppers, and cook for 1 minute, just to blanch. Drain, and set aside. 3. Preheat grill for high heat. Keepin theonman’s walking world By Lynn Armstrong “Hello, my name is Lynn Armstrong, and I want you to know my tie is off limits.” Apparently this person had an affinity for cutting off ties… You guessed it. I was wearing a tie and a man’s shirt from the other side of my closet and a killer linen flounced skirt by Sara Armstrong, and a sweet white pair of kitten heeled mules from my shoppe, ZÖE. I love that we can wear whatever we want and look good but the same isn’t always the same for men if they dress from our side of the closet. I love that we can rock the manspired look - men’s shirts, ties, trousers paired with a myriad of accessories from amazing earrings and hats to shoe choices - from pumps to Mary Janes to wedges to brogues and yes - even runners. So let’s do. Rock the man’s closet. Because you already rock the world.

ZÖE Shoes + Objects is a gallery boutique focusing on independently created and curated shoes and goods. Lynn as been the owner since February 1, 2016, and in that time has rebranded the 30 year-old business to the word ZÖE, which means life. Nine months later, she designed and moved the shop to a new location at 1732 Badham Blvd. “ZÖE is life lived in shoes, for men and women who going places. Our goal is to bring that which is rare, beautiful and purposeful for all the events of our lives, and provide an inspiring environment and experience for our guests.”

No-bake desserts are popular this time of year because (1) we don’t want to heat up the house more when it’s already hot outside and (2) we want more time to play and less time in the kitchen. This Banana Split No Bake Cheesecake is super easy to make but you will need to chill it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours before serving. You can also make it the night before to save yourself time on party day.
