Welcome THERE’S NOTHING LIKE a good kit car show to lift your spirits and I’m already getting excited about the Stoneleigh show on the 3rd and 4th of May. Stoneleigh was the first show I ever went to, back in the mid ’80s, and it just blew my mind – here were all the cars I’d only ever seen in the magazines and, much as I love magazines, there’s nothing quite like seeing the real thing. And over twenty years later, Stoneleigh remains top dog when it comes to big kit car get togethers. It’s a mega event and I love everything about it. So if you’ve not already set aside at least one day of this coming bank holiday weekend, do so now. We look forward to seeing you there. Adam chose the recent Goodwood Festival Of Speed press day to reveal the paintjob on his Sylva Riot to the rest of the CKC team. He has had the sides of the car, which are normally left in bare aluminium, painted to match the bright orange of the fibreglass panels and, wow, what a difference. The car looked fab before, but it looks amazing now. The Riot has always been one of my favourite kit cars – I just love the way it’s so small... far smaller than anything else currently on offer within the industry. It’s an abject lesson in proving that old saying that ‘less is more’. And now seeing Adam’s new painted example I must say that I’m rather jealous. He’s a lucky chap. Over the last month or so I’ve been beavering away designing a website. I must point out that I’m certainly no techno geek, and the technical realities of cyber space are completely lost to me, but a quick search online revealed a number of companies offering free web space, using pre-defined web designs – simply choose what style of site you’d like, and drop in your own pictures and words... it’s a complete doddle and looks surprisingly professional. And what’s the content of the website I’ve been working on? Well longstanding readers will know that I have an incurable weakness for the Car Craft Cyclone which was produced during the late ’90s. I’ve already owned two of the things and have spent the last few years regretting selling both of them! And I’ve also become increasingly frustrated with the complete lack of information to be found online about the car. So that is now in the process of being rectified via my website... www.cc-cyclone.co.uk Over the month that this magazine is on sale we’ll witness the end of Single Vehicle Approval and the introduction of its replacement, Individual Vehicle Approval. The subject of IVA has certainly kept many a forum buzzing with strong opinions and, more often than not, information that isn’t always as accurate as it could be. So our comprehensive feature on the subject in this issue, will hopefully set the record straight. As I watched the car go through an IVA assessment, it’s clear that the test does introduce a number of small changes to the existing SVA, but for the most part, I suspect we’ll soon adjust and simply build cars in an IVA approved way, just as we have with SVA. Above all, I see no reason why it should stop any of us from enjoying the hobby we all love.

GROUP TEST Three Mojos THE SYLVA MARQUE must be responsible for spawning more kit car companies than any other single force within the industry. A whole catalogue of ex-Sylva models is currently available from a host of different manufacturers: the Striker, Fury, Jester and Phoenix all originate from the drawing board of Jeremy Phillips and now find themselves under separate ownership. The Mojo project is the latest to be released into the wild, and Matthew Beardshaw’s newly-formed Meggt Ltd is behind the venture. When the Mojo first appeared on the scene towards the end of the last decade, it was ahead of its time. The short supply of front-engined, rear-wheel-drive donor cars is now beginning to tell. While the Mojo wasn’t the first to transplant a front-wheel-drive package into the
back of a kit car, it probably provides the most concise solution to the concept of a ‘midengined Seven.’ Having built one for himself, Matthew was already more than familiar with the Mojo before taking on the project commercially. When he discovered it in 2004, it was the perfect car for him. “I studied engineering at university,” says Matthew, “and drew up a concept of using front-wheel-drive components in the back of a sports car – and Sylva had done it!” Towards the end of his own build project in 2007, Matthew approached Jeremy Phillips asking for first refusal in the event that the project should ever be offered for sale. After a few more conversations of increasing intent, the deal was signed in December 2008. The three cars here, effectively all privately
owned, neatly span the Mojo’s 10-year production cycle and demonstrate the various bodywork, chassis and engine options open to today’s Mojo buyer; all are relevant since each derivative remains in production. They also showcase the three engine options Meggt will focus on – the Rover K-series, Ford Zetec and all-alloy Zetec SE (Sigma). The earliest of our three test cars (the red one in these photos) is owned by Neil Everett. Remarkably, he’s been using it as his sole form of transport for over four years, clocking up 24,000 miles commuting to work daily and on longer journeys – including a trip to Wales when he managed to take his mountain bike with him. Since the car is used every day, it’s equipped with a full complement of weather gear, although Neil usually leaves the roof off

for his 10-minute drive to work, only using it to keep the rain out when the Mojo is parked up during the day; it’s easier to get in and out of the car with the roof off, and quieter while on the move. You may think that using a car as hardcore as the Mojo daily would be more of a hardship than a joy, but Neil says it’s easier to live with than you’d expect. Only occasionally does it become unenjoyable, and he can usually dodge the rain on his commute. Most of the time, though, he says it’s a great way to get to work. “You never arrive feeling tired!” The car has a 1.8-litre Zetec engine and Neil is unsure how much power it’s developing (about 160bhp is his estimate) as he mapped the ECU at home. “I don’t like paying someone else to do something I can do myself,” he says.

He’s pretty proficient in the garage, too. When he swapped from twin 40 carbs to Suzuki GSXR750 throttle bodies, the whole job was completed inside a weekend so he could get to work on the Monday morning. At 6ft 2in tall, Neil was drawn to the Mojo in part because it was one of the few kit cars he could get comfortable in. Entry and exit is much easier with the hood off, but seeing Neil fold himself through the opening made by the rigid sidescreen is an education in deftness. As I slide into the driver’s seat (roof off, thankfully), and keep sliding until I reach the pedals, it’s blatantly apparent that he has made the most of the Mojo’s interior space – I can just about see over the steering wheel by the time my feet make contact with the pedals. There’s a lot of space available in here!
The Zetec engine settles to a steady idle on Neil’s own map and, as we take to the bumpy country lanes that form the route of this test, it’s clear that this car has been thoroughly developed over its relatively high mileage. Neil works as a CAE engineer in the vehicle dynamics department of Land Rover (which means he works with simulations of suspension set-ups and their effects on steering, handling and ride). He has spent considerable time tweaking the coil-over dampers to achieve a compliant ride. The result is 275lb/in springs all round (switching from the original spec of 400lb/in springs at each corner) with the dampers set to zero clicks. Across ruts and potholes, you can see the front wheels bobbing frantically, the suspension working hard to iron out the road. Meanwhile, the car remains utterly

FEW KIT CAR operations have been as proactive as Tiger Racing in striving to offer a variety of Lotus Seven inspired derivatives. From the original Super Six in 1990, Tiger has continually revamped and updated the concept, offering cars to meet virtually every price bracket, from super affordable (look no further than the Tiger Avon) to top-end exotic (the twin-engined Tiger Z100 should cover it nicely). I might even go so far as to suggest that the diversity of models on offer has, at times, potentially been confusing, but more recently the company has slimmed down the model line-up without neglecting any specific customer base. If you’re looking for a Lotus Seven inspired replica, regardless of your budget, there

RS6 which make it a unique model in its own right. While most of the componentry and chassis are indeed taken from the R6, the front suspension is all new, with a pushrod based system using a top bellcrank and internally located coil-over damper. Not only does the new suspension look cleaner from the outside but, according to Tiger’s Paul Dudley, there are dynamic advantages too, with a more precise steering feel and better front end control. Although the engine choice can be flexible, the standard RS6 installation will be a brand new 2-litre Ford Duratec twin-cam developing around 200bhp with the help of Weber Alpha throttle bodies and Tiger’s own engine map. A complete kit in a box, including brand
will be a Tiger model to suit. The latest newcomer to the range is the all aluminium bodied RS6. And I’m not just talking about some of the panels – everything is aluminium, including complex parts such as the nosecone and scuttle. In any normal situation, this would immediately result in a huge hike in price, since working in aluminium is extremely time consuming and a skilled craft. But in true Tiger fashion, the company has learnt the skills required and now fabricates the bodywork inhouse, which keeps the premium for an RS6 down to a more modest £3700 increase over the fibreglass bodied R6 (a figure which also includes a different front suspension and other ancillaries). A FIRST GLANCE at Steve Martin’s car, and the impression is one of a nice example of the ever-popular Fisher Fury – and that’s just how Steve likes it. When he planned this project he wanted a car that looked obviously well built and that evoked a ‘production’ feel, but he certainly didn’t want a car that shouted about its talents. That said, there’s plenty of talent here, should you care to look a little closer... Like many of us, he’s a sucker for a V8 – the sound, the slug of power, the effortless torque. His Fury was always
going to be capable. Steve’s been a long term kit car fanatic, with a Marlin Roadster, Pilgrim Bulldog, Spartan and Cox GTM Coupé all passing through his hands over the last decade, but while he fiddled with all of them, he’d never built a car until the Fury came along. Advertised privately as a rolling chassis/body kit, the Fury has been supplied by the factory with the suspension assembled and the chassis modified for a V8 installation. The owner had subsequently barely touched
it, but had receipts for £8000. At £4000 it seemed a bargain. When Steve bought the kit in 2004 it was already six years old, and was one of the very first Furys to be supplied with a Chapman strut based independent rear suspension. Indeed, almost immediately it appears the design was changed from what’s on his car. Having stripped the rolling chassis back down and reassembled everything to ensure it was all correct, the first serious job Steve had to deal with was the installation of the 3.9-litre Rover V8 he had for the car. Two main installation criteria would have a major impact on the look of the finished product. Most importantly, he was determined that the bonnet would not be modified and, secondly, he wanted the exhausts to exit at the back of the car, not out of the side sills, as per most Furys. But even getting the engine into the car was complicated. Firstly, there was a gearbox to consider. The original Rover
