Welcome to the ARUNDELTown Festival 2009 On behalf of myself and my committee, I welcome you to the 2009 Arundel Town Festival. Together with other organisations and sponsors, to whom I owe my thanks, we hope we have created eleven days of entertainment and enjoyment both for our Arundel residents and for our visitors and holiday-makers. My personal experience of Arundel Festival's extends for nearly a quarter of a century. During that time, the nature of events naturally has changed , some items become almost traditional, others have become modified, but we think this year's programme is full of variety, from serious music to street theatre, and a great many other things, all complementary to the activities being held in and around Arundel Castle. Just read through this programme and come along and enjoy the Festival.

The Arundel Festival is full of excitement and creative energy. Each August this wonderful historic town is alive with art, sculpture, music, theatre, street entertainments and events to interest and entertain all ages. The Festival is always a very special time to visit and discover Arundel with its wealth of fascinating shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions. We are delighted to be working again with IML who have planned three more varied and exciting concerts with firework finales and with Candlelight Opera who are presenting Mozart’s Don Giovanni. We are also looking forward to welcoming back to Arundel the British Shakespeare Company as they perform Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Collector Earl’s Garden. The BSC is enjoying a very busy summer. They are already sold out at Oxford and have performed to full houses in Dublin and Norwich. My sincere thanks go to the Arundel Town Festival Committee and all participants and supporters for all of their hard work and dedication in delivering this annual event for our community and our visitors. Please do come and support and enjoy the Festival. Edward Norfolk

OPERA AT ARUNDEL CASTLE Mozart’s
Performed inside The Barons’ Hall by Candlelight Opera & The Candlelight Chamber Orchestra on Tuesday 25th August at 7.30pm
Beautifully costumed in 17th century dress in the style of the Restoration Court of King Charles II.
Candlelight Opera specialise in producing specially staged and beautifully costumed performances inside some of the UK’s most prestigious historic houses and period venues. Following the success of last year’s performance of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, the company are pleased to return with a new fully staged production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni as part of this year’s Festival which has been specially styled to perfectly compliment the magnificent setting of The Barons’ Hall. When combined with the beautiful period costumes and fine soloists, this historic setting offers a stunning backdrop to the performance, which promises a unique and memorable evening’s entertainment inside a very special venue. Mozart’s retelling of the Don Juan story expertly blends comedy, tragedy, and some of the most magnificent music ever composed. The Don commits murder, attempts multiple seductions, and is finally condemned to hell. A maze of secondary plotlines adds romance and humour, while Mozart’s music soars throughout. Beautifully costumed in sumptuous 17th century dress and set at the Restoration Court of King Charles II, Candlelight Opera’s company of talented singers present an exciting evening of entertainment which remains faithful to Mozart’s classic score www.candlelightopera.co.uk

John Barrowman Interview TORCHWOOD STAR INVESTIGATES ARUNDEL CASTLE Top television and West End star John Barrowman visited Arundel Castle for a recce ahead of his appearance in the Arundel Festival next month. Known to his army of fans as the intergalatic man of action Captain Jack Harkness in BBC TV’s Doctor Who and Torchwood, multi-talented John Barrowman will be playing a very different role when he headlines at this year’s annual Festival. The 42-year-old Scottish born actor, singer, dancer and TV presenter, who appeared in last year’s Royal Variety Performance, will perform an open air ‘picnic concert’ of big musical numbers and ballads on August 22. Barrowman created the role of time traveller Captain Jack in the Doctor Who revival. The character generated such impact that it inspired the spin-off series, Torchwood, which aired its third and latest series on Monday 6th July. But he’s equally well known for his appearances on light entertainment shows such as Live & Kicking, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? and the celebrity ice skating show Dancing on Ice, guest presenting on the ITV daytime show, This Morning, not to mention his recent BBC Saturday prime time show Tonight’s the Night. He’s also an established recording artist and his Arundel concert will focus on songs from blockbuster Broadway & London stage shows and hit screen musicals. John and his band will entertain an anticipated sellout audience from 7.30pm. The castle gates will be open to picnickers from 5pm and the evening will end with a firework finale at 10.30pm. We are also very grateful to venue owners for hosting events.

NATURE’S DYNAMICS A talk by Dr. Jacqueline Dyer This talk examines the ups and downs of nature and the causes and effects of ecological change. At the human scale, nature seems relatively stable (a heathland may remain a heathland for hundreds of years) or cyclical (seasons follow one another in a relatively predictable way). Occasionally we see catastrophic effects (a landscape gets wiped out by fire or flood). However, at both larger and smaller scales, nature is often up to things beyond our perception. We shall see how large-scale ecosystem properties may relate to micro-scale genetic dynamics. Effects at both ends of the scale contribute to nature's persistent, yet ever-changing forms.

In conversation with Justine Cummins, herself a consultant dermatologist, Gabriel Weston will talk about her book.

The Importance of Being Earnest
By Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde's brilliant play makes fun of the English upper classes with light-hearted satire and dazzling humour. The Importance of Being Earnest is one of the most popular plays ever written. Subtitled ‘A trivial comedy for serious people’, it is bursting with hilarious lines and extraordinary twists of fate and sparkles with the witty dialogue of its genteel protagonists. Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing discover they have both been leading dual lives; that is to say they have both been "bunburying" for pleasure. Jack lives in the country with his pretty
ward Cecily Cardew, but in London he is known only as Ernest and is head over heels in love with Lady Bracknell’s daughter Gwendolen Fairfax. Miss Fairfax's cousin is Algernon, who, unbeknown to Jack, adopts the pseudonym of Ernest and goes to the country and in turn falls passionately in love with Jack's ward Cecily. The real fun and confusion begins when the two Ernests end up together and their deceptions are in danger of being revealed.
“In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing.”
The Priory Playhouse, London Road, Arundel BOX OFFICE: 01243 542 221 from 18th July. Tickets £10 (£8 Members) - available daily until 9pm.

Only three roadworthy buses of this type are known to exist in the UK. UF1517 was new to Southdown Motor Services in 1927 and was used on lightly trafficked rural services in mid and West Sussex. It became a garden shed in 1932 and was rescued for preservation in 1982. It was restored by the museum and eventually put back on the road in 1987. It is just one of over 14 preserved buses you can see at Amberley Museum.

'NO RHYME …NO REASON? THE POETRY OF WAR' Following last year's highly successful performance of William Blake, Voices In Performance (formerly Village Voices) return to Arundel Festival this Summer with 'No Rhyme …No Reason? -The Poetry of War' - devised by Christine West and Rod Beacham, and directed by Julia Goodman. Using voices, poetry, story and music, we look at war from the perspective of the age and experience of the group: 'The Baby Boomers'! This takes us on a rollercoaster from the First World War and before to the present day including Iraq and Afghanistan, through the eyes of children and adults. If you would like further information about Voices In Performance, please visit www.voicesinperformance.com Tickets: £8.00 to include tea and cake available from: Arundel Visitor Information Centre, 1-3 River Road, Arundel, West Sussex. ARUNDEL LIONS CLUB Arundel Lions Club, part of the world’s largest service club organisation, welcomes the opportunity to be involved once again with the Festival. We will be presenting the ever popular ‘Bands in the Square’ in the afternoons and on Bank Holiday Monday, the exciting annual Festival Duck Race. The proceeds from these events are donated to local deserving causes and our members never cease to be amazed at the generosity of the visitors to the festival. We are always extremely grateful. Indeed, monies raised last year helped the Club to donate £3000 to the Sussex Air Ambulance Fund which receives no funding from the Government or the National Lottery. Being a ‘Lion’ is very satisfying and rewarding. When you see us in the Town during the Festival, please find time to come and have a chat. You may feel that you would like to join us and help those in the community less fortunate than yourself…..and have fun doing it.
