WELCOME TO ANOTHER issue of Complete Kit Car which seems absolutely rammed with reading material. I can’t quite believe how much we’ve managed to squeeze in – all of which is 100 per cent fresh and new, as you’d expect. I’m sure regular readers will also notice that we’ve given the magazine a thorough overhaul in terms of its look, with more dynamic feature layouts and even greater clarity for our ever growing CKC Workshop section. Let me know what you think and if there’s anything you’d like us to include in future issues. The CKC Workshop has gone from strength to strength over the last few months. This month we have no fewer than three build stories, a comprehensive tool test on cordless drills, a new products page, spotlight on LS V8 engine supplier GM PartsWorld, an explanation of different suspension types, a new technical Q&A with John Dickens and, of course, news from the CKC fleet of kit cars. Over the last year or so we’ve been increasingly aware of just how vital you find the technical features we have in CKC, and this month I’m delighted to welcome on board our regular technical contributor, John Dickens, as CKC’s very first Technical Editor. John’s clear writing style, meticulous accuracy and down to earth build experience is second to none and he has become an invaluable part of the CKC team since he joined us back in 2007. In addition to the jam-packed magazine, you also have in your grubby mitts (dirty from having spent time working on your kit car, of course!) a 24-page supplement featuring the build diaries from two of our Running Reports contributors. This collated series of diaries also includes the final, previously unseen, feature on Ian Mackenzie’s immaculate MK Indy. He did such a fantastic job of the MK – it’s a superb example of how a kit car should be assembled. And then there’s Justin Yates’ outrageous Aeon GT3. He did no less of a brilliant job, but on a far more complex and challenging project. The result speaks for itself – immaculate. If you’re new to the scene, these build diaries will hopefully give you a feel for what it’s like to build a car for the first time. Neither Ian nor Justin had built a car before, so their build diaries are a great record of the thrill (and occasional frustration!) of kit car building. I hope they inspire you to have a go yourself. Wow, what a competition we have this month! Forget all those old screwdrivers and ageing spanners in your garage. Never intended as a kit car, circumstances may have played into our hands as the Deronda heads into the homebuilt market. CKC’s editor gets an exclusive first drive. 16 www.completekitcar.co.uk

FUNNY HOW THINGS turn out. I first saw the Deronda when it made its public debut at the 2004 Autosport show. It was an interesting yet quirky design, but little of that mattered, since it was only being offered as a turnkey car for the track day enthusiast. CKC need not apply for a test drive. Five years later and circumstances have changed as I find myself dropping a crash helmet on for some fast laps of the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground test circuit. And this time CKC has been specially invited! So what’s the story? The Deronda was originally conceived by Andy Round, who couldn’t find what he was looking for in the existing marketplace and subsequently commissioned a design company to create the car he always wanted. The Deronda was the result, with Andy hoping to sell the car as a turnkey offering to other people like himself. Things started promisingly. A second car was swiftly built for his very first customer, and the Americans were also keen on the Deronda’s aggressive styling – a licence was issued to a company to produce the Deronda in the States, complete with LS V8 power (and called the Type G). Even broadcaster and selfconfessed petrolhead, Jay Leno, reviewed the Stateside version (watch it at www.jaylenosgarage.com). But in the UK the Deronda’s path to established turnkey contender has been problematic – first were some supplier issues and then, more importantly, health problems finally put paid to Andy’s dreams. The Deronda hit the buffers. But move forward to earlier this year, and Andy finds himself moving to the South coast and meeting another self-confessed automotive headcase, Kelvin Kinkaid. Kelvin built a Spartan when he was just 17 and has owned different kit cars almost ever since. But he’s also passionate about all things automotive, is heavily into the electric car scene and currently runs Qdos Cars importing the Acrea Zest. Andy asked Kelvin if he fancied having a go at marketing the Deronda. As Kelvin says, “it was a stupid question.” He jumped at the chance, but also knew he needed another person in the team with the technical engineering background to get the car back into production. So he contacted Alistair Courtney of Midas Cars and the duo soon persuaded Andy that the Deronda didn’t need to be limited to turnkey sales only – it could also be offered in kit form. So Kelvin and Alistair now offer the Deronda under the Alternative Cars umbrella company which Alistair created to market the Midas products. If the Deronda takes off as they hope it will, then a bespoke company will soon follow. Standing at Brungtingthorpe, looking once again at what is the original car I saw at Autosport some five years ago, the Deronda looks far less quirky than I remember. It’s a brilliantly aggressive looking machine with a genuine sense of drama. First off, it’s larger than its immediate contemporaries in the skeletal market, while its bulging flanks give it a wider, more squat feel that somehow seems a bit more grown-up. And the styling is an area that I like. Somehow, it’s the least like an Atom of all those cars currently on the market. I like that. Closer inspection reveals some impressive looking suspension. Tig welded double wishbones are of high quality, running a pushrod based system with top bell crank and longitudinally located horizontal coil-over damper. AP Racing calipers and large ventilated discs at each corner also add to the feeling that the Deronda isn’t here to mess about. It means business. Accessing the engine that lies under the rear bodywork isn’t currently the work of a minute, but when the three separate panels are removed, they reveal a 1.8-litre Audi turbo engine and 5-speed transaxle. Tuned by Cosworth Developments, it’s good for 300bhp... more than justifying the spec of the suspension components already discovered. But even in stock tune, this is a great engine, with power from 150bhp to 225bhp, depending on the exact donor you choose. And you’ll find it everywhere, in many of the Audi models (A4, A6 and TT to name just three) and also several Seats (Leon and Ibiza). So finding a suitable example to meet your needs really shouldn’t be an issue. Beyond the engine and transaxle (plus wiring ancillaries), there’s not really a donor car for the Deronda, with most other AUGUST 2009

Dakar Mutant
Let’s
Off Road!
Dakar has just launched its first clean-sheet design since the company was started back in the 1990s. Does the new Mutant complement the existing 4x4? CKC gets the first drive to find out. IT’S NOT ONLY the size of it that gives the new Dakar Mutant impact, it’s also down to the unashamedly rough and tumble appearance. It looks as though scaffolding has been bent like plastic straws around the right-angled body panels. Indestructible is one word for its rugged demeanour, and when we take it to our quarry based photo location, it fits right in amongst the heavy machinery being used to excavate and carry large quantities of soil. Kicking up lungfuls of dust as it moves around for the photos, it could almost be tackling the Australian outback; you wouldn’t guess we’re inside the M25. As kit cars go, this is as workmanlike as it gets. In fact, along with the Hummer style Storm Warrior from Action Automotive, Dakar is one of the last couple of protagonists of the full size, kit form off-roader. A lofty 4x4 certainly provides a kit car journo, more used to skimming the surface in pared down sports cars, with a novel perspective on the world. The background to the Mutant was provided by its designer, Kevin Dempsey, in part one of this story (April 2009). The car was originally the brainchild of Steve Bennett. When he was stalling for inspiration, he recruited Dakar 4x4 owner Kevin to work alongside him on the project. Steve tragically died last year, and since then Kevin has worked on his own to make the vision a reality. The Mutant made its debut at May’s Stoneleigh show. Exoskeletal cars are all the rage at the moment, but this one takes the concept beyond the sports cars we’re used to seeing and into the realms of something a bit more brutal! One of Steve’s original ideas was that, with a brightly coloured frame and black panels, it would look like the frame of a car moving along the road – an idea Kevin has brought to reality.
Colour combinations, of course, are endless. Interestingly, though, so is the choice of material used for the body panels. Because the bodywork comprises flat panels, no GRP moulds have been made; instead, builders will be able to choose their own material and cut to shape accordingly. The demonstrator uses a material called Diabond, which is two sheets of coloured aluminum sandwiching a layer of Nylon. It’s a lightweight, durable and relatively inexpensive material usually used in sign-making. Kevin spent £320 on the Diabond in the demonstrator. Alternatively, you could use aluminium, mild steel, plywood... whatever! But before any Mutant builder gets that far, there’s the heavier work to do in converting a classic Range Rover or Land Rover Discovery donor into the latest Dakar. You start by unbolting the bodyshell. Once you’ve done that, you’re effectively left with a rolling chassis. All the mechanicals stay put, as does the bulkhead. It’s a good time to recondition anything that needs it, as access is so good. The rear seats need to be temporarily removed to take out a small part of the rear floor. Elsewhere, some extra width needs to be added to the floor. The new framework is then bolted to the mounting points previously used by the bodyshell, to which is added the body panels and accessories. Essentially, that’s all there is to it. Retaining the donor’s entire chassis means there’s no requirement for the Mutant to go through an IVA test prior to being re-registered. It’s probably worth noting that if you only have a standard single garage, you’ll be working outside. The Mutant will quickly outgrow a normal garage leaving you with no space to work around it. The example here uses a Range Rover donor

complete with a grumbly V8 engine and automatic gearbox which really suits its takeno-prisoners looks. Land Rover Discovery donors will be easier to find these days, though, and come with the option of a more parsimonious diesel engine. It’s planned that the next demo will be an oil burner to illustrate the different options, and it’s likely to be a convertible too. The car will also be shaped slightly by customer feedback. A convertible would have been ideal for the sunny day we drove the car, but even the fixed roof version has removable doors. This is a good thing, as the prototype is currently lacking fresh air ventilation (it’s on the to-do list) and the donor’s air conditioning has been decommissioned. When fitted, the doors open wide and offer a generous opening through which to haul yourself. A small step welded onto the lower chassis rail eases access, but the sill is still noticeably high. Once in, you perch on the donor’s leather seats with its stock dashboard ahead of you. Since so much of the donor is retained, it’s possible to keep many of the features it comes with. As well as the aforementioned leather and air, things like ABS and electric mirrors can be carried over. The Mutant is wider than a Range Rover, a feeling exacerbated by the short, wide, triple wipered windscreen through which the occupants peer. The outside world becomes a widescreen movie, cropped at the top by roofline and below by the bluff-fronted bonnet. You always know where the car’s extremities

With a plethora of Cobra replicas on the market CKC puts the Madgwick SR V8 under the Road Test microscope. THE COMPANY Madgwick Cars is run by the father and son team of Dave and Mike Curruthers. The company began by offering a Lotus Seven inspired roadster, before taking on the SR V8 in 2001. Madgwick operates alongside the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main business, Pagham Service Station, a car repair and service operation. Chassis are made in-house, while fibreglass work is farmed out to specialists. In addition to selling kits, the company also services the spares market for the many SR V8s already on the road.
MODEL BACKGROUND The SR V8 originally came onto the scene way back in 1985 with Southern Roadcraft, making it one of the most established fake snakes on the market. It was highly successful and there are thought to be around 650 kits in existence. Dropping out of the marketplace in 1995, it resurfaced with Madgwick in 2001 when the company added the SR V8 to its existing model, the Madgwick Roadster.
THE TEST CAR The current demonstrator was completed last year and has only covered a few hundred miles since then. It runs a mildly tuned Ford 302 and is built to a largely standard specification and to a level that any competent builder could reasonably be expected to achieve. Madgwick would expect the home builder to get something similar on the road for around ÂŁ23,000.
DESIGN, ENGINEERING & SAFETY 7/10 From an aesthetic perspective, the Cobra shape is well established and the SR V8 ticks many of the boxes in terms of its looks. The fibreglass bodywork is supplied in a primer gelcoat finish, with inner wings and boot moulded in. The chassis itself is an impressively robust ladder style chassis with steel panelled floor, footwells and part of the tunnel. The company was one of the first to offer power steering for this type of car.
DONOR/COMPONENT CHOICE 7/10 No surprises here. The SR V8 uses the Jaguar XJ6 for much of its suspension, including almost all of the front end, along with shortened rear driveshafts and fabricated trailing arms. There are currently no plans to move to XJ40 components, as Madgwick tells us it has a ready supply of donor parts. However, it does already offer a conversion for the back of the car to use XJ40 driveshafts and hubs, in order to allow for outboard discs (the XJ6 having in-board discs). From here, many of the other parts are found from various different sources, or made for the purpose, so the steering column is Sierra, while pedals, radiator, fuel tanks etc are all fabricated specifically for the car.
