I MUST ADMIT to being a tad apprehensive before my drive of the new Sylva J15. I’m a big fan of the Riot, on which the J15 is based, so I wasn’t concerned about the driving experience. But I was worried about the styling of the new car. I’d seen it when it was first revealed at last year’s Newark kit car show... and I was underwhelmed. While it looked perfectly OK, it wasn’t the cutting edge new design I’d perhaps hoped for. But seeing the J15 out in the real world, on the public roads and parked up outside Sylva’s workshops, I’ve no such doubts. While the J15 unquestionably has a retro feel, there’s also something much more modern going on here. It looks surprisingly muscular thanks to those fat rear arches, while the bonnet line is so extraordinarily low, that the J15 is pressed to the tarmac. I love it. Of course, the driving experience is as exciting as we’d expect from one of the industry’s most experienced designers, but that was no surprise. I always knew it would be good to drive.

PLATFORM SHARING MAY be common place within the mainstream motoring industry, but it remains something of a rarity within the kit car scene... which is pretty bonkers when you think about it. After all, with virtually every kit car on the market working on the foundation of a chassis with body dropped over the top, it would seem common sense to utilise the one chassis and suspension package, and simply (and comparatively cheaply) re-clothe with a selection of different body designs to appeal to different markets. Ironically, Sylva isn’t new to this concept and was one of the first
companies to try it, by re-clothing its established Striker with a full body, in the form of the Phoenix in 1989. Now I’m happy for us to nail our colours to the mast on this one. The CKC crew are big fans of the Sylva Riot. Without question one of the smallest kit car in the market, the titchy Riot uses one of the sweetest engines currently in the scene (in the form of the Ford Sigma twin-cam), located behind the driver to produce a super agile, super quick, pocket rocket (a word I hate, but which perfectly suits the Riot’s stature) that will accommodate drivers over 6ft tall within a virtually perfect driving position. It has the best gear change on the planet and is terrific value. And in case you think I’m overdoing

the praise, Features Editor Adam Wilkins invested his very own cash in building one in 2007, clocking up over 10,000 miles so far, in only a year and a half of driving. But if there’s a rub with the Sylva Riot, then the stripped back styling is possibly it. Personally, I love the front end but I can understand people who find the back a little rudimentary. So over the last year or so, Sylva’s Jeremy Phillips has been working on a way of affordably adding another model to the range while also providing a shape that will appeal to a completely different kind of customer. The J15 is the result. Long time Sylva fans will see an obvious family resemblence with earlier Sylva models such as the Fury, Stylus and

Vindicator AS Veleno, 427 And Venom
The Auto Speciali range of supercars looks set to get the marketing push it deserves following a relaunch by sole UK distributor Vindicator Cars. CKC investigates.

THERE HAVE ALWAYS been those cars within the kit car scene that, for one reason or another, never quite reach their full potential. They’re the cars brimming with potential, that are thwarted by lack of development, poor marketing, plain bad luck or, in the case of Auto Speciali’s range of supercars, the untimely death in 2007 of Keith Kirk, the driving force behind the company. This left Keith’s business partner, Jon Harris, holding the reins, but Jon would be the first to admit that his role had previously centred around the financial wellbeing of Auto Speciali and not the day-to-day practical running of a kit car manufacturing business. Since then, Auto Speciali has dropped off our radar, succumbing to an enforced hibernation from which, finally, it looks as though the company’s three models are awaking. In a new deal, the range will
now be marketed and sold through Vindicator Cars. The latter is already well established in the scene and has the manufacturing, marketing and support infrastructure in place to give future Auto Speciali customers a new found confidence. It’s terrific news, because the cars have always been interesting... The company offers three very different models, all with a similar design ethos that was at the centre of everything that Keith did – he was a firm believer in making the cars easy to build, while using as much from a single donor as was practical. His view was that there was no point redesigning things mainstream manufacturers had spent millions developing, and it was a mantra he perfected with the last car he developed, the Veleno you see in the main pictures here. But before the Veleno, came the
Veleno’s certainly exotic, and is one of three significant models being remarketed by Vindicator Cars.
AS427 and Venom. The Cobra replica (AS427) is a robust Granada/Sierra based offering at the lower end of the price spectrum for this type of replica. Construction is interesting, being based around a multi-tubular chassis made predominantly from large 40x40mm square tube steel. This is different from most fake snakes, which more usually have a substantial ladder construction, often with steel footwell sections. Fabricated double wishbones then locate the Ford sourced components at each corner, while in the engine bay you can start at the donor’s 4-cylinder or V6 units before heading into more familiar V8 fare. But it’s also worth mentioning the fibreglass structure in the AS 427. While the external shape offers few surprises, we have always been impressed with the other panels utilised elsewhere on the car.

Bill Mummery’s Luego Velocity
When a big crash put an end to Bill Mummery’s racing days, he thought a road-going kit car would be a slightly more sensible way to get his speed thrills. But his 253bhp Luego is anything but sedate. Adam Wilkins takes up the story.
IT WAS A big crash in 2008 that put an end to Bill Mummery’s 15-year stint of grass track racing. Having worked his way up from a stock 1000cc Mini to a monster Metro pushing out over 200bhp, his need for speed is obvious. In short circuit racing, there are few limits on what you can build, and Bill’s Metro had a Ford Escort based front end and a Vauxhall twin-cam engine. It’s a terrific forum to learn about building cars, honing fabrication skills and, of course, it provides plenty of fast driving experience. Bill was pretty handy too with a bulging trophy cabinet to prove it. But, once the crash happened, he decided he’d pushed his luck far enough. All the good bits from the Metro were sold and the bodyshell was scrapped. “I took it to a scrapyard and watched the big grabber crush it and throw it on the heap,” says Bill. “It was the end of an era.” Not everything was sold off or scrapped, though. Bill had kept the engine because he had plans to fit it to a kit car. He viewed this project as a more sensible way of getting his speed thrills – and it would also keep him busy in the garage. Choosing from the myriad of sevenesque roadsters proved easy: as soon as Bill saw a picture of a Luego Velocity in a magazine, he knew it was the one for him. “I like bling and shiny bits,” he says. “It looked great with the stainless steel side panels.”

Back then, Luego Sports Cars had just been bought by its current owner, Ben Lord, and relocated from Peterborough to Aberdeen. Undeterred by the increased distance involved, Bill duly made the long trip from his Kent home to Scotland by coach. It was cheaper than the plane, train or driving – but the journey took 12 hours! Although there was no demonstrator to see, he ordered a kit and ventured back home. It wouldn’t be until May the following year that the build actually began. Obviously, with a big distance to the factory, any back-up support was obtained by phone or e-mail, although Bill was confident from the outset in his ability to complete the project. Having done a lot of fabrication work on his racing cars – and also working as a commercial vehicle fitter – he’s mechanically adept. As a
consequence, the distance didn’t create any problems. Throughout the project, Bill did as much of the work himself as he possibly could. He doesn’t like paying for services if he can do the work. This is his approach to most things in life; our interview was conducted in a house extension that he built himself. “I like to turn my hand to a variety of things,” he says. This have-a-go mentality is coupled with an obvious eye for detail. The Velocity has been very well assembled, with plenty of trick detailing throughout. The build was approached in a methodical way. Attaching the suspension components was the most satisfying part of the process for Bill – it was this stage at which he felt progress was swift. Before the build got much further, he
