IT’S EASY TO assume that every CKC reader is a regular... familiar with the kit car scene, heads to the Stoneleigh show every year and can tell the difference between a Westfield and Tiger at twenty paces. This is all well and good, and providing you kit car diehards with entertaining and informative new material every month is a core part of what we do. But the industry will go nowhere (indeed, it will only slowly decline) if we cannot also appeal to the newcomer with equal enthusiasm and focus. If you’re reading these pages for the first time and have no idea what I’m talking about when I mention Stoneleigh and telling the difference between and Westfield and a big cat then, as the headline suggests... a very warm welcome to you. Over the coming months we’ll be running a series of introductory features and guides on different aspects of kit car ownership, from practical hands-on guides to using basic workshop tools, to tackling a kit car build for the first time, dealing with the legalities of getting a car on the road and much more. One thing is for sure, if you are new to the scene, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve no doubt that as you discover more about this great hobby you’ll be amazed by its diversity, enthralled by the possibilities and eventually take the plunge and either buy a pre-owned kit car or build a car from scratch. And for the old hands out there, CKC is going into overdrive in 2010. We’ll be putting yet more cars through our gritty road tests, getting first dibbs on the brand new cars coming to the market, investigating the most adventurous home builds and keeping an eye on the more obscure oddities, as well as the mainstream favourites. On the technical front, the CKC Workshop section of the mag will be ultra busy this year. Expect more down to earth builds coming your way, lots of hands-on practical advice from Technical Editor John Dickens, and all manner of long-term projects to follow. And on the lighter side of things, Wilkins and I have a number of more alternative projects to undertake. There’s unfinished business with our £500 Challenge cars for starters (yes, they’ve not gone away) and we’ll continue to get involved with the clubs, have fun at the shows and generally try to get the most from a massively friendly scene. And then there are competitions such as the amazing £1100 wheel/tyre combo in this issue. Expect more fab prizes in the future, along with more of the great giveaways we’ve done in recent months.

SOME DECISIONS IN life are easy and some are hard. And some of the hard decisions can be unpleasant while others may well be enjoyable. Regardless of how hard the decision may be, there can be little doubt that choosing between a Ferrari 360 or 430 replica has to be an enjoyable process. And the process is made all the more easy (or tricky, depending on your perspective on these things) with a visit to DNA Automotive, a purveyor of replicas for both models. DNA has been on the scene since 2006 when it first launched its cunningly named 3Sixty. It has been marketing, promoting and selling its products ever since and, as such, is one of the longest established manufacturers within this niche of the kit car scene. And let’s be
honest, while longevity is good news within the mainstream kit car arena, it’s particularly encouraging within the world of exotic bodykits... a scene which has had more than its fair share of companies come and go over the last few years. Unusually, DNA has also appeared happy to show off its kit car credentials. It’s the only such company I can remember to display a kit of body panels at a kit car show (Donington 2007) and more recently has been happy to have it’s nitty, gritty build DVD playing at the Exeter show in 2009. These may not seem like significant events, but they’re an overt display of confidence by a company that’s happy for its base product to come under close public scrutiny. I was impressed by the panels back in 2007... and I’m again impressed on

this most recent visit to the company’s workshops in North Birmingham. This time there are two complete bodykits awaiting collection. They’re not sat here for my benefit, but when I suggest we lay them outside to get a photograph, closer inspection once again reveals quality mouldings. Not only are the surface finish and return edges good, but the back of the panels are flow-coated in black by the company DNA uses to make them. For starters, it means that any panel inners that remain visible in the finished car are already black, rather than bare fibreglass. And the flowcoating also helps to seal the fibreglass and add additional protection from stone chips hitting the panels from the underside. It’s a nice touch. And there are other features of the kit

Two lads in a roadside car park give a wave so enthusiastically it looks not unlike the flailing-arm emergency signal from Team America. Everywhere it goes, the apparently aptly named Furore causes a big stir. It’s certainly brightening up a cloudy day in Essex and passers-by are in no doubt that what they’re looking at is a

racing car to which someone has attached numberplates and headlights. Except it’s not. The Furore is a kit car that takes its entire mechanical package from nothing more exotic than an often rusty Mk1 Toyota MR2 and it can be built at home for under £10,000. Just don’t tell the residents of Benfleet that – it’d shatter the illusion for them! Russ Bost is the man behind the Furore project – although he never

intended it to become a production kit. A long while ago when he ran an independent garage, he was discussing what the kit car market has to offer with his business partner. There was nothing that he fancied building and he wondered why nobody had designed a Formula One style kit car. He first had the idea before Nigel Mansell was world champion, but it wasn’t until 2001 that he was able to do anything about it. By then, he’d sold his share of the garage business and was looking for something to fill his newly found spare time. Building an existing kit car would have been the simplest route to occupying him, but when he looked around at what was on offer there was still nothing that fired his imagination. He was also turned off by
the industry’s apparent preoccupation with sevenesque roadsters and Cobra replicas – so he decided to build that F1 inspired car he’d envisaged over a decade earlier. That first car (which is currently on sale at Total Headturners) bares no relation to subsequent kits, being a complete one-off. It’s based on a Formula Ford chassis which has been lengthened to give (just enough) space for a tandem seat. It has also been fitted with two Kawasaki ZX10 engines, each producing 137bhp and driving one rear wheel. Naturally, it generated its fair share of publicity which led to enquiries from others wanting to build Furores of their own. Once enough interest had been expressed to justify productionising the Furore concept as a kit, its specification changed dramatically. It would need a dedicated body and chassis of its own, as well as an engine and drivetrain package that involved less specialist engineering and was easier to live with than the twin bike engined arrangement of Russ’s own car. It would also need more interior space than the first car, which had been built specifically around himself at 5ft 6in. The readily available Ford Mondeo was considered as a donor but quickly dismissed in favour of a mid-engined configuration. Opting for the latter would make the build more straightforward in a number of ways, since everything would be oriented for a midengined car. For instance, it could retain the standard gearchange, and there would be no need to disable the steering (as you would when transplanting a front engine to a mid-engine configuration). In the end, the Mk1 Toyota MR2 was chosen since they have a propensity to rust structurally but leave behind decent mechanicals. You may think, as we did, that the original MR2 is becoming a little scarce, but the six Furore builders so far have had no difficulty in sourcing donor vehicles. At the time of writing, there are four on eBay for under £600.

THE COMPANY AK Sportscars was launched in 1990 by Alan Frew and Ken Freeman (hence AK), but it was Ken who soon took on the operation entirely and gradually grew the company into one of the UK’s main players in the kit car scene. AK has always been a family run company, with sons Dan and Jon both involved over the years, along with Ken’s wife Lynda. But 2010 sees a significant change at the helm, with Jon and his
wife Wendi taking on the daily running of the business as Ken and Lynda retire. Jon takes over a company that’s in rude health. AK has weathered the storm of the recession spectacularly and ends 2009 with almost six months of advance orders. AK produces around 30 kits every year, along with three to four full builds. The company operates from a modern 5800sq ft factory unit, with six employees (including Jon and Wendi).
AK produces almost everything in house, not only making all its own chassis and bodies, but also all stainless and aluminium fabrications (exhausts etc), all interior trim and even wiring looms.
MODEL BACKGROUND Launched in 1990, the AK 427 has not tried to re-write the rulebook when it comes to Cobra replicas. A Jaguar XJ6 based product, the AK uses a sturdy ladder chassis mated to a fibreglass bodyshell, with was revamped a few years ago to update some of the styling details. It features an integral tub for the cockpit and also the boot area, as well as having pre-bonded in inner wheelarches. For all its conformity, AK has been happy to embrace modern features, such as power steering and, most recently, the car has been redesigned to accept more modern Jaguar XJ40 based suspension components (an option over the XJ6 based kit).
THE TEST CAR This is a brand new demonstrator, running the company’s latest XJ40 suspension package, power steering and a brand new Chevrolet Corvette LS3 engine developing 430bhp in standard tune. There is, however, nothing on the car that is beyond the basic package. The interior is the company’s standard leather trim, while externally the only additions are the small winglets at the front. AK estimates that to privately build a car to this standard would cost around £27,000.

Essentially a ladderframe chassis, the AK benefits from an additional backbone structure which stretches the length of the centre tunnel but, rather oddly, does not go further forward around the transmission tunnel. While a Jaguar XJ6 based car has been the mainstay of the range up until recently, the increasing rarity of donor components has meant a new Jaguar XJ40 based car has been developed. This means AK’s own top and bottom wishbones up front, utilising the XJ40 stub axle, with a modified steering arm. At the back, a substantial fabricated lower wishbone is used with shortened XJ40 driveshaft and hub carrier. Significantly, this brings the rear brakes to a conventional outboard location, in place of the XJ6’s inboard package. The AK bodyshell is a one-piece item, as per all Cobra replica bodies, but with a bonded in main inner and boot tub. A substantial scuttle hoop and lower outer chassis frame offer a degree of side impact protection.
