THIS HAS CERTAINLY been the month for exclusive first tests on some of the industry’s most exciting new cars. The French built Rayvolution has always intrigued us, and Adam Wilkins’ drive out to France meant he was the first journo to get behind the wheel of this radical three-wheeler. Read his first impressions on page 44. And then Adam was also first to examine the brand new GKD Legend. I can’t help but feel this is actually quite a significant little car, despite its conventional styling. We’ve begun to get accustomed to the use of BMW components in kit cars, but few have really taken off into volume sales success stories. But the BMW 3-series based Legend makes the best argument yet for the German donor. Loads of the components are retained in the car, while using the 4-cylinder engine means unwanted donors are extraordinarily cheap. And as I’ve found in the past while running an ageing 5-series Beemer, service parts are usually cheaper than the equivalent Ford bits. Finally, I managed to sneak off and drive the MK Midi this month. The car was completely unannounced before its arrival at Stoneleigh, yet was instantly available for test drives. And my thoughts? Well turn to page 80 to find out.

But if you want to build something on a very, very tight budget, then it seems you need to be a little more imaginative than simply ordering a kit from a conventional manufacturer. Ashley Gardiner joins as a regular contributor over the next few months as he records his progress building a Haynes Roadster (aka Locost). This is the car you build from scratch, welding up a chassis following drawings and measurements given in the Haynes book, Build Your Own Sports Car. Ashley’s budget is a modest £3500 (although we know of people who’ve completed cars for under £2000) and he’s never built a kit car before. Will he finish the car? Will it be any good when it’s done? Will his welding stand up to scrutiny and will he ever manage to get it through an IVA test? They’re all questions we’ll know the answers to over the coming months and you can follow his progress in all its glory only here, in Complete Kit Car. Welcome aboard Ashley.

YOU CAN ALMOST sense the collective sigh at the announcement of a new Seven style roadster. Not another one? It’s the phlegmatic reaction to any newcomer elbowing its way into this overcrowded corner of the marketplace. Yet the GKD Legend brings something genuinely new to the table. I’ll stop short of saying that it’s radical, but it’s certainly fresh enough to bring some genuine excitement to the sector. The reason? Because it’s the first Seven inspired roadster to use the BMW 3-series as its single donor.
Not that you would ever guess merely by looking at it; the Legend’s innovative light is hidden under the bushel of conventional styling. GKD has very deliberately trodden a well worn path when it comes to the car’s appearance; its classic appearance sidesteps any possible controversy. The thinking behind this move is that many kit car enthusiasts are already sold on the concept; a fresh design could be an obstacle to sales. The flip side is that the Legend’s significance isn’t immediately obvious and therefore needs a bit of drum-beating to make its case.
So... why BMW? GKD’s Peter Lathrope is a great believer that proper sports cars should have their engines in the front and the driven wheels at the

back. The Ford Sierra served the kit car industry well for many years, but now they’re almost extinct. The obvious mass produced options that fit the bill are the Mazda MX-5 and BMW 3-series, but Peter couldn’t see the point in ripping apart a sports car to make another one, so the prolific 3-series was chosen. As Peter says, “When was the last time you saw a Sierra? And when was the last time you didn’t see a 3-series?” GKD had spent the best part of a year redeveloping its other model, the Evolution, to accept BMW parts for all the reasons above. Then the first cracks began to appear in the country’s economy. Conscious that a lot of investment had been made, Peter’s wife Denise suggested doubling up the R&D on a product that could be offered at a more affordable price. Being a fan of Seven style cars, Peter decided that all the groundwork on the BMW based Evo could be carried over to a Seven-inspired roadster. With all the research and mechanical work already completed, the Legend was designed in just six weeks and has been brought to the market ahead of its stablemate. The 3-series based Evolution will arrive later this year. To design the Legend’s chassis, GKD started with the front and rear jigs from the Evolution and joined them with a new spaceframe construction in the middle. This is made mostly from 25x25mm square tube, but there is also some 25x50mm square tube and 1⁄4in round tube in there as well. In effect, it’s a clean sheet design – but one which benefits from proven suspension

After the heat of the morning, it’s going to be quite slippery. Not that it’s my turn to go out on track yet; it’s currently occupied by potential customers of the local supercar dealers trying out Aston Martins, Audi R8s and Lamborghini Gallardos. Instead, I’m about to spend a few minutes familiarising myself with the French made Rayvolution Evo in the large and otherwise deserted paddock. Before the car turns a wheel, the large, stylised front wings are removed by the Rayvolution team. This is partly so I can photograph the car in both guises and partly
because, until the suspension is tweaked, the tyres rub the bodywork during hard cornering. This one is the prototype; car number two will incorporate a number of changes that will be carried over to all the production spec kits. We’ll cover the changes as we go. After an energetic leap into the single-seat cockpit, you find an excellent low, reclined driving position. The Tillett race seat is positioned perfectly and is actually non-adjustable – instead, the floor-mounted Tilton pedals can be moved. The sequential gearlever sits high to the left of the steering wheel. That’s an obvious nod to the Rayvo’s focus on the UK market, since those used to right-hand-drive cars swap cogs with the

hand they’re used to shifting with. The Suzuki GSXR1000 engine fires on the donor motorcycle’s starter button and quickly settles to that meaningful sounding idle at which bike engines excel. Getting a bike engined car off the line smoothly is always an onerous task when there’s an audience. It will be no different with the Evo – the loud pedal is so sensitive, your pulse could generate a few thousand revs on its own. My efforts to be gentle with the throttle on take-off result in a stall. Twice. There’s only so much you can learn in a few second gear laps of a car park. I decide to concentrate on throttle response, steering feel and brakes. Only the lightest of touches is

Midi Size MAXI FUN Out of nowhere comes the MK Midi, a mid-engined, bike-engined Lotus Seven lookalike. CKC is the first to drive it.

THE NEW MK Engineering Midi was one of the surprise finds at the recent Stoneleigh show, having had no preshow publicity and occupying a small stand at the back of one of the main halls. You wouldn’t call it a loud and brash launch, more of a susurration... Indeed, MK Engineering’s Martin Keenan wasn’t absolutely sure he would even market the car. A photocopied single sheet of A4 gave a basic specification and a price, but had interest been lukewarm then he’d have kept the Midi for himself and gone back home to continue with the day job. However interest was not tepid, but instead rather hot, with at least three visitors keen to write deposit cheques there and then. The MK Midi was given the green light. CKC is with Martin three weeks later
to drive the new car. It has passed its SVA retest (a tweak for emissions) just the day before and the registration process is in mid flow and should result in a brand new 09-plate. For today we’re on trade plates. Martin tells us that the Midi came about in an attempt to answer shortcomings that were identified with his earlier Sprint R. He was surprised when customers often seemed to sell their cars shortly after completion, and when he questioned them about it, the single seat was the big issue – it simply wasn’t a very social car, with no one able to share in the excitement. So a two-seat, bike engined creation seemed an obvious progression. The Lotus Seven inspired front end styling was a safe bet, with the mid-engined configuration giving this popular theme a new twist. As a long-

standing bike engine fan, the Midi is currently only available with bike options, and the first car has a mighty 175bhp Kawasaki ZX12R under the rear cover. The Lotus Seven styling cues are very obvious from the front (not so from the back), with the advantage that the bonnet line can be kept low as a result of the engine being removed to the back. To the experienced kit car eye, it’s difficult not to see similarities with the existing Sylva Riot and Martin’s obviously been stung by comments he received at the show. He’s quick to point out that the overall style of the car was a natural consequence of moving the engine from the front to the back, while trying to keep the size as small as possible. The reality is that the Midi is certainly not a replica or copy of the Riot in the
