BIG NEWS THIS this month has to be the announcement by Potenza Sports Cars (also the parent company of Westfield Sports Cars) that it is withdrawing GTM Cars from the kit car market with immediate effect, while it redevelops the product range for a subsequent relaunch. Adam Wilkins has dug out the full story to go with our timely feature on three superb examples of the breed, on page 16, and I should make it clear that GTM hasn’t gone pop... simply that the company is withdrawing it from the market for the time being. This is a huge shame, but perhaps not a great surprise to us, since GTM as a company seemed to go into hibernation almost as soon as it changed hands back in 2007. From what we gather, that’s been a big frustration with existing owners who have struggled with parts supply and support. And, of course, it’ll be a big blow for anyone considering ordering a GTM in the future. Two things appear certain... GTM Cars will will return to the kit car market in a year or so, and its first offering will be a freshly styled model using electric power (and followed with a Vauxhall Corsa petrol engined variant). Both kits and type approved turnkey cars will be marketed. So what’s happening to the existing body designs and manufacturing jigs and moulds? From our perspective, we’d like to see the existing cars back in the marketplace and if Potenza has no plans to re-use the designs in the new cars, then why not sell the manufacturing rights, but hold onto the GTM name? As you can see from our feature, both the Libra and Spyder still look thoroughly contemporary. While the loss of the current Libra and Spyder from the kit car scene is a tragedy, there is a flipside to this story, and it could be not only a bright new future for GTM at the forefront of new technology, but also for other kit car manufacturers willing and able to take the plunge. I’ve said before that our industry is perfectly placed to exploit the interest in electric power. The separate (and easily adaptable) chassis design of most kits means a quick revamp is on the cards, but there’s more to it than just electric sports cars. A good looking electric shopper, with four seats to allow for a school run with the kids, just has to make sense. This industry can offer that solution faster than any other (in either turnkey or kit form), but it must look right. So it’s unquestionably very disappointing news that GTM will no longer be offering its existing kit-based model range that so many of us know and love. But interesting, and potentially exciting, times ahead.

Libra’s appeal shines so brightly that it has a strong following of its own. As an all-rounder, this is one of the most complete kit cars the world has ever seen. Despite that, it was announced just days before our deadline that the models have been withdrawn from production. The brand is currently owned by Potenza Sportscars (the same company that controls Westfield) and the obsolete Rover parts in the GTM’s construction don’t fit with the supply-everything-new policy the company has for its comprehensive kit packages. This story was originally intended to serve as a reminder of a terrific kit car whose waning publicity has seen it fade
from public view over the last couple of years. Instead, it serves as a farewell to two excellent GTM models. Take a good long look as the Libra and Spyder are consigned to history.
BOB SNOOKS’ LIBRA It’s hard to comprehend, when looking at Bob Snooks’ excellently built and beautifully preserved GTM Libra, that this is one of the oldest examples in existence. Moreover, the car spent the first seven years of its life as a daily driver. The bright red gelcoat looks like new, the engine bay is immaculate and, inside, the only clue to this car’s age and 50,000 miles is some slight wear on the cream alcantara

that covers the seats. Back in 1998, Bob and his wife Marion needed a second car for commuting and a sports car fitted the bill. As he had always fancied the idea of building a car, she suggested he built one for her to use for getting to and from work. The couple collected all the brochures and decided on the GTM K3. A week later, the new Libra appeared on the cover of Which Kit? and, after spending some time examining the details, Bob was on the phone to the factory to arrange a viewing. Back then, GTM was a small company run by Paddy Fitch and the late Peter Beck. Bob assumed he’d be able to visit the factory immediately to see the demonstrator – but his request was refused. The car was due to be unveiled at the following week’s Stoneleigh kit car show, and it was to be kept firmly under wraps until then. He called again a few days later, but was still turned away until the big reveal. So, on the strength of the magazine article, he placed a deposit which Paddy promised to return if Bob decided he didn’t like the car upon seeing it. As it turned out, he loved it, and took delivery of chassis number two in October of the same year. There was no build manual for early, pioneering Libra builders. “My build manual is made from fax paper,” says Bob. “Peter would send me a page when I called to ask how to do something.” He’s practically minded anyway, having previously restored a classic Mini, so the build progressed smoothly and reached its conclusion in November 1999. The car was SVA’d Monday, registered Thursday and driven to the Exeter kit car show and to Cornwall the same weekend; its maiden journey was 700 miles, setting the tone for its intense use in the years to follow. For the last few years, the GTM has been used for holidays, weekends away and club events. Bob is the secretary of the GTM Owners’ Club, so you’ll find him

IN THE HIERARCHY of bike-engined cars, these three loony machines are in the rarefied, thin air, high altitude ether just before you hit outer space. At ground level you’ll find sensible blokes who’ve bolted in a standard Honda Fireblade. 145+bhp, reliable, fun to drive, sequential gearbox and a superb soundtrack. It’s a well-trodden path, with loads of technical back-up should you need it. Those looking for more power almost inevitably spend more money and head for the exotic superbike installations, such as the naturally aspirated Suzuki Hayabusa, or perhaps the Yamaha ZX12. Now we’re talking 160 to 180bhp – seriously quick machinery with everything offered by the Fireblade, but with added spice. We’re talking standard passenger plane altitude here. Nothing too fancy, but plenty of punch... But as we’re about to find out, the leap of faith required to take your naturally aspirated bike engine into serious power turbo territory isn’t one to be taken lightly. When you’re heading for outer space everything gets more complicated (and more expensive!).

When supplying an engine it has to meet the standard we'd chose to fit to our own race bikes and cars. All of our engines are under 7,000 miles, the majority are closer to 4,000. Keith Rayner’s Fisher Fury
Beyond this Fury’s understated appearance lies one of the most detailed, intricate builds we’ve ever seen. Lots of bespoke parts, many of them made from titanium, make it stand out from the crowd. Adam Wilkins met the builder. WASHERS MAY NOT be the most obvious opening gambit in a feature about a high performance sports car, but this isn’t an ordinary kit car so we’ll start with washers. Not a single penny washer makes direct contact with GRP in this Fisher Fury – there’s a plastic washer sandwiched between. Oh, and all those metal and plastic washers have been individually made by hand. In the case of the former, they’re made from titanium. Bolts next. Every one has been cut to the correct

length. But we’re not talking a quick hacksaw job. Every bolt has been accurately cut and chamfered so that just one and half threads protrude from the nut. Hopefully that’s rammed the point home: this is not your average kit car build. It’s not even merely a very immaculate build. What we have here is one of those outstanding builds that makes for memorable feature material. Yet at first glance, you might overlook what makes this car so special. The British Racing Green
bodywork and grey interior give it an understated, period appearance. You might even overlook it. It’s only when you take the time to notice the details that you realise that this car is a long way from the norm. Spend some time with builder Keith Rayner and you’ll be immersed in the world of a kit car build less ordinary. Keith’s background is in engineering, having served his apprenticeship with the Atomic Energy Authority in 1971. He then moved on to Rolls Royce’s Aero Engineering Division until it closed its doors in 1991. After a dalliance with driving instruction, he has returned to engineering at University College London where he works as an R&D engineer for developing and improving artificial joints. In other words, he makes his living from the kind of design and fabrication that he has employed in the Fury. It also gives him

access to a lathe and CNC machinery that you won’t find in a typical domestic garage. The benefits can be seen throughout the car. Outside of work, Keith has a history in racing and has owned a number of fast Fords but, until building the Fury, he’d never put together a road car. He chose the Fury because it allowed enough scope for his own interpretation of the build and also because he already knew his way around Ford components. On his visit to the factory, he stumbled across an IRS chassis so chose that over the live axle version he had intended. He also specified doors (something that has become a rarity with Furys) to make access easier. Fitting the
doors would also add another dimension to the build. For Keith, the whole thrust of the appeal of a kit car is the process of putting it together. That’s why he was happy to go to the nth degree in terms of engineering detail. Setting aside one evening per week and as many Sundays as his family let him get away with, he would spend three years building the car, starting in 2002. When he bought his kit, the Fury project was still owned by Mark Fisher. Since then, it has passed through the control of the Kit Car Workshop and is now owned by Kent based gearbox specialist, BGH Geartech. At the outset of the build, three golden rules were set. Firstly, there would be no

self tapping screws used unless they’re part of a preparatory item. Secondly, no pop rivets would be used into GRP and, thirdly, no cut edges of GRP would be left exposed. But it’s the seemingly endless array of one-off details that really make this car. Keith has made parts from a variety of different materials, depending on their application. Titanium is undoubtedly the headline grabbing metal that has been employed. A whole shopping list of parts has been fabricated from the exotic metal, including tiny inserts in the cam cover that
