ATTRACTING NEW PEOPLE to the kit car scene is vital but, contrary to popular belief, I don’t believe it’s as difficult as some people would have us think. New companies pop up all the time and the allure of being a ‘car manufacturer’ holds just as much appeal as it ever did. Just witness the recent purchase of Raw Striker by the Bulmer brothers or our drive in this issue of the Typhoon Valdris. The appeal of creating your own car company is as strong as ever. And new people still want to buy kit cars, even in these straightened times. New Running Reports contributor James Griffon has finally scratched the kit car itch and is building a Westfield using one of the company’s all-in-one kit packages. And at the more affordable end of the scale, MEV reports scorching sales of its new MX-5 based Exocet, and almost exclusively to new kit car enthusiasts taking their first tentative steps into our scene. As ever, people will buy the right product at the right price. For all that, CKC is always investing in new ways of trying to reach enthusiasts. While much of that may be behind-the-scenes development of new shop availability (supermarkets, motorway services, airports etc) we also push hard to attend new events outside of the kit car scene, hence our first ever display at this year’s Goodwood Revival. It was a real eyeopener, and we’ll be back next year, spreading the word about kit cars at this and other mainstream events.

CKC/Omex Track day
Brilliant weather and another fab mix of enthusiastic kit car owners and cars means it must be another CKC/Omex track day. Why don’t you join us next time? IT’S BECOMING APPARENT that for many people, the idea of taking your car on track may be appealing, but the thought of mixing in with hardcore track day drivers is intimidating. So it’s especially pleasing to find that, as we’d hoped, we are managing to attract quite a few track day virgins to CKC/Omex Track Days. Perhaps as many as a dozen of the 35 places were taken by people who’d never driven at Llandow and were dipping their toes into the track day scene for the first time. Run with our partners at Omex Technology, these days are designed to accommodate the novice while also appealing to more experienced circuit drivers. So in the morning all the drivers are split into three groups – novice, intermediate and experienced. Track

time is then run according to these groups, so all the novices are out together and so one. The first two laps of each group’s first outing are done under yellow flags, meaning no overtaking. These are sighting laps so that everyone can get an idea of the circuit’s corners before the flags are withdrawn and the more serious action commences. With each group managing three or four sessions in the morning, it’s the perfect way to feel your way into driving quickly on the track without fear of someone much faster coming barging passed every few seconds. In the afternoon we then run what’s called an open pit lane, when anyone can go out at any time, with a limit of just ten cars on track at once. It means that you are guaranteed as much track time as you want. Once again, we were offering lunch in the main building at Llandow to all those

While it was his second time at the circuit, this was the first outing for his Sylva Riot which he recently bought second-hand; previously, he had a bike powered Toniq. He switched to the Sylva because he wanted something more suited to road use, and the 1700cc Ford powered machine is more docile when you want it to be. AS I ARRIVE I’m presented with a bunch of ruby red grapes grown in Roger and Yoland Brown’s industrial size kitchen garden. It’s not the usual welcome I receive on reader’s car features, but perfectly sets the tone for Roger and Yoland’s approach to life and the most recent addition to their kit car family, an Imperial van. Roger and Yoland are a force to be reckoned with, possessing a level of energy and enthusiasm that immediately makes you feel tired. Much of their house appears to have been built, modified or fettled by Roger, while Yoland oversees a busy b&b, and the two of them cultivate
and nurture a garden that’s open to the public and which clings to a hillside of precipitous proportions and which required the construction of some 700 steps in order for the duo and their visitors to navigate their way around. And then there are the cars... In his youth Roger used to compete in autocross and rallies with an Austin 16 and then an MG J2, but that all came to a halt when he married Yoland in 1962. But if getting hitched put a stop to his motoring fun for the next 37 years, it was Yoland who got him back behind the wheel of interesting motors once he’d retired. She started buying kit car magazines and dropping hints that it would be fun to have something alternative to zoom about in. Although of a practical disposition, Roger didn’t fancy building something himself, so they went to the next kit car show looking for a sevenesque vehicle that was offered turnkey. At the time, that meant Caterham, Westfield and the South the company sold the project to Westfield African imported Birkin. A 5k saving over Sports Cars. Roger and Yoland's was one the Caterham was appealing, while a of the last to leave RDM’s workshops and subsequent blast around Silverstone with a little further work was required by Birkin’s ex F1 test driver, Steve Watson at Westfield before the Spyder was running the wheel helped seal the deal. “I love it,” as it should. enthuses Yoland. workshop
FIRSTLY, IT’S A very warm welcome back to Mark Jenkins and his slightly insane Warp 8. Mark began restoring this extraordinary 1970s one-off last year and we ran two features following his restoration diary of progress. It was a monster of a project, but just as he was making great progress, commitments elsewhere forced him to mothball the Warp until recently. But now he’s back... and so is the Warp 8. For those that missed those earlier issues, it’s thought that just two Warp 8s were produced, the first completed by the designer, Owen Williams, while the second one never made it to the road and is the car Mark bought a year or so ago. Nothing has been heard of the first car, but Mark may even have news on that shortly. Work on his car to date has been
on modifying the floorpans on the Beetle chassis to more robustly locate the bodywork. This in itself has been a major project but, as you’ll now read, is nothing by comparison to re-engineering the gullwing doors! Over to you Mark – Ed. Firstly, sorry for the delay in updating the restoration of the Warp 8 but things are getting back to normal now, so I should start making good progress again. Right then, the part of the restoration I've been dreading – the doors. At this point you'd expect me to be telling of the design work and countless hours of planning that have gone into these before I even start, but that would be a pack of lies. As with everything to do with the Warp, it's really make it up as I go along. The only thing I'm sure of at

else) without then checking that the suspension is working correctly? You’re right... it makes no sense whatsoever. Getting your car close to being correct does not need to cost a fortune and I’ve met a number of people over the years who’ve checked all the suspension parameters in their garage using home made tools. But if that’s not you, then a number of companies will offer a suspension set-up service. And it doesn’t need to cost a fortune, with prices at Northampton Motorsport typically starting from £80 for wheel alignment and just £50 for corner weighting. typically be looking at around £200 all in. That’s not a huge investment in order to make sure your car is performing the way it should, is it? What amazes me is that people are often prepared to put up with poor handling kit cars. Some people just think unpredictable handling is the way it should be – part of the sports car experience! Others know something’s amiss and gradually fall out of love with the car they’ve spent months or years creating. 23-year old Dan Wright placed his order for an MK Indy R kit when he was just 20 and spent two years assembling a Kawasaki ZX10-R

powered, flyweight road racer. At his third SVA attempt (emissions and sharp edges being the familiar failure items) in February of last year he walked away with a pass and was registered and road legal shortly after. Having opted for MK’s uprated Indy R chassis and suspension package, and remembering his engine choice, it seems obvious that Dan wants something that really delivers out on the road. But in the subsequent 18months, despite his best efforts at home, he’s never managed to get the car handling as he would like,
yet has never sort the help of a professional. As a consequence, he’s not used the car much and, when we meet up, it’s clear he’s in danger of becoming disillusioned with the whole kit car experience. But all credit to him, because when we posted on the locostbuilders forum that we wanted someone who’d like to get their car professionally set up by Northampton Motorsport, he responded within minutes (along with many other members from this popular forum). Northampton Motorsport is perhaps best known within the kit car world for its rolling road facility. We’ve featured several rolling road shootouts done with the company and its engine tuning and diagnostic facilities are well respected within the industry. But less well known is its full suspension set-up facility and also general workshop. Having just moved into larger premises, Northampton Motorsport is an impressive place to visit.
Seven Westfields of various descriptions are on site when we meet up with Dan, along with a Caterham, beautiful Ginetta G4, a Mini and several other interesting tin tops and classics (an impressive Vauxhall Chevette HSR is on the rollers). Virtually all of the kit cars are in for what you might call garage work. The Caterham is here for a minor service and radiator change; a competition Westfield in for a full rebuild with a new factory supplied chassis; and several other Westies are in for engine changes ranging from an early car going from Crossflow to Zetec, and a more modern example being converted to the latest Honda Type R. With a room dedicated to engine builds, another area set aside purely for carburettor and injection servicing, plus a machine room and a parts shop, the new Northampton Motorsport premises is impressive. Matt arrives in his MK, with dad Gavin having followed in a tin-top. After we’ve met up with
Northampton’s Troy Robinson, it’s time for a de-brief. Dan reports that the MK is skittish over uneven back roads, to the point of being quite alarming to drive. He tells us that he’s improved it from when he first drove it, but that the lack of predictability in the handling is the major problem. Troy’s hesitant about making any early predictions, but suggests this sort of symptom is often due to incorrect toe settings. But the first thing to do is get the car up on the lift and check it over for any obvious faults. As a matter of course, all the tyre pressures are checked, not least because any corner weight adjustment will be wasted if one tyre is found to have the wrong pressure afterwards and is subsequently adjusted. And then Troy and his assistant James take a few moments to look around the suspension carefully and check that everything is as it should be... and immediately it’s clear that it isn’t. When James pulls on the front

offside wheel there’s obvious movement in the lower wishbone. The bolt holding the rear leg of the lower wishbone is slightly loose and it’s enough to let the wishbone slop about on its bush. Dan’s appalled, having checked the suspension some months previously, but the bolt is soon nipped up tight and extra attention is given to the rest of the bracketry on the car. One of the top mounts for a rear wishbone is also slightly loose and, if nothing else, this has already been a worthwhile exercise! This exercise also gives Troy and James an opportunity to look at the suspension design to ascertain exactly what adjustments can be made. Not all suspension is the same, and some kit car manufacturers will supply cars which have no adjustment for certain aspects of suspension geometry. There may be good reasons for this, so it’s certainly not a failing and you shouldn’t be alarmed if your kit car doesn’t allow for complete adjustment of all

section to allow me make an almost triangular shape to follow the gap in the roof that will be filled by the top of the door. When done, I measure again and again to make sure that when finally fitted it will sit low enough to allow for the door skin to fit on top and still fit flush with the rest of the body. When I'm happy, it's welded to the hinge. Next, I cut more box section to start making the side frames that will come down to the body line just above the door handle. With the bolts in the hinges tightened up to, I measure and trim the upper frame and then tack these sections in. I go home feeling very pleased with myself.

The moment of truth... remove all the wedges, reach into the frame, release the catch and, joy of joy, the door (or should I say frame?) opens, lifts all the way up and then closes again. I spend the next half hour or so opening and closing it, only stopping because my arm starts to ache. I've got to do this again for the other side. Oh bugger! DAYS 32/33 More of the same, only not because of the minor differences from side to side with the Warp. So a little extra time was needed to do some adjustments in order to make sure both sides are now the same.

DAY 31 I've come in today full of the joys of spring and after 45 minutes wish I stayed at home. The next bit is not going to work by going from top to bottom as I can't be sure, because of the shape of the body, things will line up correctly. So the best thing to do is start from the bottom and meet somewhere in the middle. First I need to make a bracket to go on the chassis with the Discovery striker attached. Nice easy job... big nut welded to a plate, fitted into bracket, loads of adjustment, welded to chassis... happy days. Having cut out the section of the Discovery door with the catch in, I clean it up and slide it over the striker. Then, with bits of wood, metal and anything else I can find, I wedge around this small section to hold it in place while the remainder

DAY 29 The hinges are really fiddly, but finally all four are cut and shaped how I want them. A piece of 8mm inside diameter stainless steel tube is welded to each hinge, for the bolts that will eventually be used to go though. All the holes that are needed are then drilled and these parts of the hinge bolted up. The holes are drilled over-size to give me some adjustment.
DAY 30 Next is the part of the hinge that fits on the door itself. Again more leftovers are used... no waste here. These are quite easy to make, cut and shape as required, and I weld on some plates that are then shaped and drilled to allow bolts to go though to form the completed hinges. With all of these in place, it's time for the door itself... this is going to be a laugh. I've repaired more doors than I can remember, but as far as making one from scratch, well that’s a big fat zero. There’s only one way I can think of to set about this job, and that’s start at the top and work my way down. I cut some lengths of 3/4 inch box

Suspension Geometry Have you done yours?
I WONDER WHAT percentage of kit car owners take the trouble to have the suspension on their kit cars correctly set up? I’m not just talking about four-wheel alignment and toe adjustments done by your local tyre fitter, but a proper check of camber, caster and corner weights too. 50 per cent? 30 per cent? I’d hesitant to put money on it being more than 10 per cent. Whatever the figure, I’m sure it’s far too low. One of the major appeals of owning a kit car is its performance potential... not just how fast it goes, but how well it goes around corners. So why spend all that time putting a kit car together (or investing in a secondhand car assembled by someone
DAY 28 The first thing I need to do is put some extra strengthening sections in the roof to hang the doors off. These are made from left over chassis sections trimmed to fit. Four of these are cut to length and shaped to fit onto the framework already in the roof area. Nuts are then welded to these to allow hinges to be bolted to. After a bit of trimming of the roof frame these are welded into position. The hinges are also made of left over chassis sections cut and trimmed to shape, to allow the pivot point of the hinge to sit as level to the roof as possible. It seems it will need to be like this to enable the door to clear the roof when opening.

Upgrading Your Brake System There’s more to your car’s brakes than just the discs and calipers. John Dickens takes an in-depth look at the areas of your system that might benefit from upgrading to improve your car’s stopping ability.

Tech Talk
The brake pads (and the shoes in a drum brake) are the components which actually stop the car by using friction to convert the kinetic (movement) energy of the vehicle into heat. This heat is initially absorbed into the pad and disc and then has to be dispersed into the surrounding air before the next brake application. A brake pad consists of a shaped steel backing plate with the friction material bonded to it (Fig 1). On a road pad the friction material will be around 10–12mm thick when new and will be useable until it is worn down to perhaps 3– 4mm. Most production cars have a pad wear indicator wire bonded into the friction material. This makes electrical contact with the disc to illuminate a warning light
when the friction material is worn down to the specified limit. The original friction materials were based on asbestos, but due to the health risks associated with this substance safer alternatives had to be found. Modern brake pads use, depending on their intended application, polymers, mineral fibres, metal fibres, Kevlar, ceramics and sintered metal particles. The stopping ability of a brake pad depends on its Coefficient of Friction (μ). This is the ratio between the force pressing the pad onto the disc and the frictional force produced by the pad (Fig 2).
depending on the disc material, the pad material and, most importantly, the temperature. All brake pads have an optimum temperature range where they produce their maximum stopping power. If they are above or below their optimum temperatures they will still generate some friction but will not be at their most efficient. If they overheat severely they can reach a threshold temperature where the coefficient of friction falls away rapidly and the

Part 02 stopping power of the brakes becomes severely impaired. This is known as brake fade. If the overheating condition is addressed quickly and the pads are allowed to cool down, their full performance will normally be restored, but extreme overheating of the friction material can cause permanent damage and degradation of performance, in which case new pads will be needed. Severe overheating can also cause the discs to warp. The operating conditions experienced by the brake pads on a small family car will be very different to those found on a Nascar race car and to take
Coefficient of Friction = Friction force/Clamping force.
account of these variations brake manufacturers produce a wide range of pads with different friction materials tailored to specific applications. To optimise braking performance it is vital to select the correct pad material for its intended use. The most important factor in brake pad selection is its operating temperature range (Fig 4). Standard road pads will work well from below 0deg C up to around 350deg C but performance will begin to drop off above this temperature. They may begin to fade after repeated hard use. Competition pads, on the other hand, will continue to work well even at 800–900deg C but will show greatly reduced stopping power at low temperatures. If used on the road they may never get hot enough to work efficiently. Disc wear is also a consideration if non-standard pads are used. Pads designed for general road use are normally quite gentle on the discs themselves, but some of the
metallic competition pads can be much more aggressive and will cause significant disc wear. Some manufacturers carefully match their pad and disc materials to give the best combination of braking performance and wear rate and it may be that a change to an alternative pad from another manufacturer will disturb this balance. This is one reason why braking upgrades are often supplied as complete kits of matched parts (Fig 5).
BRAKE DISCS (ROTORS) Originally, brake discs were made from cast iron around 8–12 mm thick and were machined dead flat on each working surface (Fig 6). Many cars still use this basic design. The disc mounting bell or top hat is normally integral with the disc on production cars. It may be bolted to the wheel hub or may simply be trapped between the wheel and the hub and secured by the wheel bolts or nuts.
Pads designed for different applications have different temperature ranges.
2
As vehicle performance increased and brake temperatures rose, vented discs were introduced (Fig 7). These are essentially two thinner discs separated by a gap so that air can actually flow between the braking surfaces. This effectively doubles the surface area available for cooling and greatly reduces the disc temperatures. In some designs there are curved internal vanes in the air gap between the braking surfaces. These are designed to throw the air out of the disc like a centrifugal fan producing a much greater cooling airflow. These discs are normally handed and must be fitted on the correct side of the car. More recent developments include drilling or slotting the disc. A drilled disc has small holes across the entire braking surface of the disc. They are normally drilled in a curved radial pattern (Fig 7). Drilling the disc improves braking in several ways. The edges of the holes continuously clean the pad surface as well as providing
increased brake bite. The holes also prevent gases from building up between the pad and the disc surface. The same effects can also be achieved by machining radial slots in the disc surface (Fig 8). These produce the same increase in braking performance without the risk of the small cracks which may sometimes form around the edges of the holes in drilled discs. It is not unusual for high performance brake discs to have separate bolt-on mounting bells, often made from a different material. Brembo has recently introduced a floating disc system using a cast iron rotor and a billet aluminium mounting bell. The disc is not bolted to the bell, but is mounted using sprung bushes. These allow it to float slightly both axially and radially. The disc is able to expand and contract slightly in use without introducing stresses into the mounting system. Motorcycles have used floating discs for many years but it is not a development commonly found in

GCSEs and a three week trip to Florida! Anyway, after a little thought, the profile for the dash was templated using card. This is the method I’ve used for all the ally panels and it works really well. The body was dropped into place, the card offered up and the shape drawn around the profile of the body. This was then transferred onto ally but a problem quickly presented itself. The bottom of the dash requires a nice curved radius and I wasn’t sure what I could use to form this. I hunted all around the workshop but couldn’t find anything suitable. It was at the point that Rhys reminded me of the Give Way sign outside our house! Perfect. Not sure what the

neighbours thought though! Once the dash was mounted, we were able to produce a switch panel for the right hand side. This again turned out much better than I could have hoped for. Durite rocker switches do the job nicely and give me the look I was after. I also invested in the correct block connectors to make the job nice and tidy. This again was all powder coated to match the rest of the car, except the dash which we’re going to cover in vinyl. From the pictures you can see the final position for my battery; this has been supported and braced underneath the paneling. Next, thoughts went to wiring and placing the ECU and fuse boxes. I didn’t want an exposed look on the front under the bonnet, so I’ve mounted all the electrics in the
passenger side pod. I’ve also bought a universal loom and have been looking at what I need to add and what needs to come out. Wiring from the engine to the ECU runs nicely through the rear of the pod and it picks its power off the short run from the fuse box. Last job done this time has required some more anxious cutting of the precious body! Sylva supplies the rear lights for the kit and, after a small bit of modification, they fit nicely. The rears of the units are glassed in, which means the lenses can be removed without the lights falling apart. Again the finished look is very pleasing.

noise, dust, and a winter with no central heating, just one thought kept me going – I was going to have somewhere to build that Westy! In June of this year I was spurred into action by two things. Firstly, the splendidly good value of the Westfield special offer on Classic and FW kits, and secondly, that pesky coalition government announcing that VAT would rise to 20per cent in January 2011. The time to act was now, so act I did. After some lengthy conversations with those helpful folk at Westfield, I took my ever suffering wife for a nice day out to Kingswinford. You know how it goes, “Oh look dear, there’s the Westfield factory – shall we pop in?” A couple of hours later I placed an order for a white, 2-litre Zetec powered Classic Edition kit. In terms of extras, I opted for the upgraded Westfield brakes, wider front suspension, 4-point harnesses, sports seats, spare wheel, heater and locking boot cover. I am also having the metal panels, brake pipes, wiring loom and fuel pipes fitted by the factory. I’ll sleep easier knowing that all that has been done correctly!

OVER 30 YEARS ago, at the tender, impressionable age of 18, a chap I knew built himself a Dutton Phaeton. It was red, shiny, noisy, and turned far more heads than the aging Escort Mk1 that I was driving at the time. It was then that I realised that one day I would just have to build myself a kit car. The seed was sown. Much more recently, I became a regular at the Exeter Kit Car Show and always found myself drawn towards the Westfield stand. I eventually took the factory tour, and had a test drive. That sealed it. I was well and truly hooked. Next came the demolition of my damp, single skin detached garage, to be replaced with what I laughingly call the East Wing of the house. The wife got a new bedroom, utility room, larder and a spare room. I ended up with a dry and fairly roomy single garage. (Well, married life is really just one big compromise isn’t it?) As the building took shape, through all that
This is what you call, having too much time on your hands before the kit arrives! James’ garage is well organised.
James ready to get stuck in, when the nuts and bolts arrive!
Also, due to lack of space, I am collecting the kit without the bodywork. The factory will make it for me when I’m ready. So, on a sunny, early September morning I loaded up the van with a box of Yorkie Bars, added the wife and set off to Kingswinford. The guys at the factory were really helpful and we loaded and secured everything safely in the van. Disappointingly,
quite a few bits were not ready and whilst they’ll be sent on asap it has delayed the start of the project. So, the garage is a good deal fuller than before, and I’m surrounded by a chassis, a 2-litre Zetec lump, and numerous boxes of bits. All I need now are the missing bits (which incidentally includes all the nuts and bolts!) and the build will start in earnest. More next time.

DRAW A LINE under all that you thought you knew about the Toniq... a car designed by a bunch of students in 2002, sort of developed in tandem with an established kit car manufacturer a year later before being pulled from pillar to post in one of the most tortured gestation periods we’ve ever witnessed. Put all that to the back of your mind, take a deep breath and open your eyes on a brand new car... the Toniq! There is really only one thing that links the car in these pictures with that original styling exercise... original designer and owner throughout, Colin Williams. Like a dog with a bone, he has wrestled the Toniq from promising design sketch to what you see here and, finally, we are looking at the real deal. And it’s still a looker. While kit car devotees may have become accustomed to the Toniq’s styling, newcomers are still impressed. Just the day before our drive, the engine was being finally set-up by Omex Technology and when parked outside its unit the car caused great interest with the company’s neighbours,
Page 17
Broughtons. This company services supercars from manufacturers such as Koenigsegg, Spyker, Aston Martin and Bentley, and the guys there were impressed by the Toniq’s design and new take on the established sevenesque theme. At the other end of the scale, my 10-year old son immediately pointed out that the car looked far more modern than all the other cars he’d seen daddy drive in the magazine. He loved its sharp looks... the car looked current. Under the painted fibreglass panels is an impressive spaceframe chassis we first highlighted to you early last year. Like so much of this ‘new’ Toniq, it’s a ground up fresh design that bears no resemblance to anything that has been underneath the car before. Almost exclusively made in round-tube steel, the chassis has been designed and fabricated by Caged, a highly respected engineering company based in Somerset, which started out making roll cages and now does the chassis for a number of mainstream low volume car manufacturers. The cleansheet design for the Toniq chassis has few compromises – Caged’s intention was to make it the best in the market, bar none. Every tube is cut by laser for a level of accuracy that means there should be a tolerance of less than 1mm across the

whole chassis. It’s so accurate, in fact, that Caged can even laser cut all the rivet holes in the chassis so that they perfectly match the pre-cut rivet holes in the laser cut aluminium panelling. We’ve never seen that in any other kit car... ever. The suspension is to an equally impressive specification. With double wishbones on each corner, there are also inboard coil-overs at each end, operated via pushrods and bell cranks. At the back the dampers are almost horizontally mounted, lying over the differential. Fabricated uprights at the back and cast stub axles up front utilise Ford brakes and bearings up front and VAG sourced items out back. While these could be donor sourced, it’s part of the Toniq strategy that everything can be supplied in a box, brand new. To that end, this first demonstrator features a new Ford Duratec engine, running Omex ignition, Raceline throttle bodies and fancy cams to produce 204bhp. For the factory, this will be known as the CB200 option, with base spec Duratec cars leaving the unit with a stock 180bhp lump (CB180) under the bonnet. The lesser engine will also feature a 5-speed Mazda MX-5 gearbox, where this test car has the Mazda’s 6-speed unit (once again supplied boxed and new). As an entry level option there is also the CB110 utlising a Ford Sigma 1600cc

Recreations of a typical early to mid-50's car reminiscent of the many european sports and racing cars that dominated motorsports throughout europe in that decade. Our interpretation uses the humble Triumph Herald chassis and drive train. We can offer the customer anything from a bare body shell, or part thereof, right through to a complete driveaway road legal example.
Typhoon sports cars are a family run business with over 50 years of automotive experience. We have spent the past few years developing and building our own car of which we are now able to offer to the person looking for something different. With its own unique styling and proven Ford running gear should be just the thing for someone that wants to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Shaun Kemp’s Raw Fulcrum
THIS IS ALMOST certainly the first time Toyo R888 tyre tracks have been laid in the dust of this Suffolk gravel pit. Despite being surrounded by vast piles of aggregate, intimidating machinery and heavily laden tipper trucks, Shaun Kemp’s Raw Fulcrum still manages to look aggressive. It has presence that belies its tiny dimensions; it is, after all,
based on the platform of the diminutive sevenesque Striker. The Fulcrum’s edgy, modern styling is a world apart from the traditional openwheeled car it’s based on. It looks menacing and functional, especially in the black-with-black-wheels scheme of this example. Adding to it’s sense of purpose is its obvious race track bias; it’s low at the

front, equipped with a rakish, attractive roll cage and has a stripped interior. Add into the mix the frantic, high revving Honda Fireblade soundtrack and there’s no doubting its potential. No wonder it can hold its own in an environment dominated by Daf trucks. As we learnt in part one of this story last month, it was a passenger ride in a Striker

We covered the construction of the first privately built Raw Fulcrum in last month’s issue – now it’s time to examine the stealthy Fireblade powered track day warrior in its completed form. that sold Shaun on the idea of building a kit car. He had taken his Toyota Celica GT4 to its first track day at Snetterton. One passenger ride in the Striker convinced him that he needed to sell the Toyota and build something a little more focussed. “Every time we got to a corner, I thought we were going to die, but the car just turned in and stuck to the road,” he says.
He soon discovered that motorcycle engine specialist, AB Performance, was local to him and also acted as an agent for Raw. AB’s Andy Bates explained the Striker’s excellent reputation and racewinning pedigree, which was backed up by searching on Google. Without any further research, Shaun was ready to place an order for the kit. But it wasn’t for

a Striker. Once he’d seen the Fulcrum parked next to a Striker in AB’s workshop, he was sold on the styling. He also liked the extra feeling of security offered by the fuller body. Throughout the build, Shaun dealt only with AB Performance and has only good words to say about Andy’s service. “The first time I met him,” says Shaun, “he told me that he doesn’t operate like other companies. You become a friend who also happens to be a customer.” This approach was epitomised when it was all hands on deck to get the car ready for its SVA test; they worked through to 5am after the head gasket blew at the eleventh hour. As you may have read last month, Raw has just passed into the hands of new owners. AB will continue to be an agent for the company. It’s believed that this is the first privately built Fulcrum to reach completion and its scarcity gives it great kudos in the track day paddock. Its unique styling creates a level of intrigue that a Seven style roadster wouldn’t and most people are genuinely surprised to learn that it’s a kit car. Shaun often fields questions about the car, although he does sometimes enjoy standing back and watching the gathered crowds trying to figure out the car’s identity for themselves; usually they can’t. Having something that stands out from the crowd is a big part of the Fulcrum’s appeal for Shaun. He may have hastily sold his Celica, promptly ordered the kit and even completed the build much more quickly than he anticipated, but nothing about it looks rushed. Being a CNC machinist by trade, Shaun has a natural aptitude for working out how things fit together and work. That background has certainly helped the creation of a well built kit car. Most people assume this is a low volume production car. That’s not surprising as it’s a tidy example that does full justice to the modern styling.
