It’s 30 years since NG Cars first appeared. While the market for traditional tourers isn’t what it once was, the TF and TC are still going strong. CKC road tests the former. THE COMPANY NG Cars was the brainchild of Nick Green and first appeared in 1979 with the TA model. In its time, the company has changed hands on several occasions. Pastiche Cars took it over in 1989 and, for a brief spell in the early 1990s, it was owned by GTM. It was under the
ownership of John Hoyle (from 1993) that the marque became established as the one we know today. In 2001, it was sold to New Milton, Hampshire, based Imex Group International, but it wasn’t long before it hit the buffers. At around this time, patent agent and MG enthusiast Nigel Brooks heard of NG and sought out
the company with the aim of buying a kit. However, production had ceased and it was too late. Instead, he purchased the assets from the receiver and brought the NG marque under the banner of his thennewly formed company, Findhorn Cars. Since 2002, Findhorn has been steadily marketing the cars from its rural base close to Petersfield, Hampshire. Both the TF and larger, typically V8 engined TC are available. Fabrication of the bodies and chassis is farmed out, while the components for the optional independent rear suspension are still supplied by John Hoyle. Findhorn Cars exhibited an experimental Jaguar based prototype at the Exeter show a couple of years ago, lessons from which are being incorporated into an all-new design. Details of the forthcoming model are sketchy and will only be revealed in the fullness of time, but expect it to be quite different to the existing NG stable. Over 1000 NGs have been built to date.

The TF is easily amongst the prettiest traditional tourers. Incredibly, it has been around since 1983.

The TF arrived in 1983 alongside the similar TD (the latter differentiated by its cycle wings). Levels of fit and finish are high by today’s standards, so back then, its quality must have been out of this world compared with many contemporary kit cars. Like all NGs before it, the TF took its donor components from an MGB, although there was the option of fitting a Rover straight-six or V8 engine. During Pastiche Cars’ stewardship of the project, Morris Marina and Ford Cortina/Sierra based versions were released (dubbed Ascot and Henley respectively), but those versions have been long since forgotten as production kits – it’s MG donor parts all the way now. The arrival of the SVA test in 1998 prompted the biggest round of revisions to the car. For instance, dashboards were standardised, seatbelts were routed over the seat and consequently the seats were made more robust, and the aluminum windscreen surround was usurped by a chrome-on-brass affair still seen today. Other changes along the way include an optional suspension upgrade that was designed in conjunction with Hawk Cars. This saw IRS at the back and fabricated double wishbones with coil-over dampers at the front. Most recently, Findhorn Cars has been working on a wide bodied version of the car (not seen here). The body tub is tapered from the windscreen backwards to increase shoulder room. The car’s overall width remains the same, though – the main body tub simply extends over the rear wings. The firm is also working to introduce doors as an option to aid ingress and egress, and lowering the rear

Ben Mason’s ZZimmeR
When he wasn’t spending his time rebuilding rain forests of the Philippines, Ben Mason spent the last year rebuilding a Kawasaki ZZR1100 into a bonkers 4-wheeler tearaway. WHEN BEN MASON’S not saving the planet by almost single-handedly buying up and re-foresting huge swathes of destroyed tropical rain forest in the Philippines (in the process, creating the the largest privately owned and registered hardwood plantation in the country), he’s back at home in Cyprus, fiddling with rather less environmentally friendly activities such as creating the completely bonkers ZZimmeR you see here. He justifies this seeming confutation by pointing out that the ZZimmeR is actually a lightweight,

economical, small engined family car, extensively using recycled parts and even painted in the right colour! Given the 18,000 hardwood trees he has planted to date we suspect any carbon footprint he may create has been more than adequately offset! Ben’s interest in both cars and bikes started early. “By the time I was ten and still at primary school I was buying, repairing and trading in motorcycles,” he tells us. “I bought my first car by the time I was twelve, for a packet of cigarettes.” While qualifying with a first class
honours degree at university, he still managed to find time to run a Daimler SP250 (Dart), which he spent five years

totally re-engineering (with new chassis, suspension and larger 4.5-litre Daimler V8 engine) in order to create a car he enjoyed rather than one he didn’t. A career in manufacturing (building automated factories in the UK) ended suddenly with a heart attack... prompting a lifestyle rethink that resulted in Ben
moving to Cyprus where he now runs a musical instrument repair and restoration business in between taking time out to work in the Philippines overseeing his reforestation project. All the time, his interest in both bikes and cars has always remained, with variants of both parked in the garage. He was a lifelong fan of British bikes, until Kawasaki launched the ZZR1100 and he was persuaded to try one by a friend. He’s never looked back, owning the latest version ever since. “I’ve always toyed with the idea of building a bike car,” he explains. “There have been various sketches on my drawing board over the years, but I’ve just not had the time to do it.” But when an impending sixtieth birthday was looming, Ben decided it was

time to make the sketches a reality. The design brief was simple. “I wanted it to look like the bike, behave like the bike, but be a four-wheeler.” Ben knew that on most occasions he’d be driving the ZZimmeR on his own, so to keep the weight balance as near perfect as possible, the engine was to be offset to one side, counterbalancing the weight of the driver while also helping to reduce the car’s polar moment of inertia, by setting the engine nearer the centre of the car (front to back). It means there’s not a great deal of space for a passenger, but enough to carry one of his young children in reasonable comfort and safety. As you’d expect, the chassis is a multi-tubular spaceframe, but unusually, the torsional stiffness of the frame is concentrated down the left side of the car, around the engine. Both front and rear suspension loads are fed into this structure, with the frame around the

YOU MIGHT THINK that getting through four head gaskets in two months would make Tim Furnival regret his decision to bolt a turbocharger to the side of his Robin Hood Zero’s Ford Pinto engine. Yet for him, ironing out the teething troubles is all part of the challenge – and relishing the engineering side of the project was the motivation behind fitting a turbo in the first place. Well, that and the obvious boost in performance. Rewind a little and we learn that this isn’t Tim’s first kit car build. A friend of his had a motorcycle powered MK and, after a run up the road in it, he’d caught the bug and decided he’d build a car of his own. He looked at MKs and Westfields before a bit of internet searching uncovered the temptingly priced Robin Hood 2B kit. It was back in 2003 when it arrived, and there was a moment when he thought “what have I done?” The build wasn’t the easiest maiden project and, with other aspects of life delaying progress as well, it was four years before the car was on the road. Although he was happy with the finished result, it wasn’t on the road long before the Robin Hood Zero was released. With its more conventional welded square tube chassis (as opposed to the 2B’s bent round tube), he preferred the new car. Tim quickly sold the 2B to fund a Zero project. Not that he automatically returned to Robin Hood which, by now, had changed hands to the current Great British Sports Cars operation. He once again considered Westfield with its then-new Mazda MX-5 based car. But he specifically wanted a DIY turbo project and, since he already knew his way around the Pinto engine, the Robin Hood got the nod. A combination of an easier build and knowledge through experience of the first project meant he spent just four months putting the Zero together and it was on the road in April of this year. During those four months, it was the turbo installation that caused the most head-scratching. Early on, Tim was told that it wouldn’t be possible to turbocharge an engine on carbs and that he’d need the greater control of engine management. That was all the encouragement he needed to prove that theory wrong and he set about turbocharging a carburettor-fed Pinto engine. During his early research, Tim came across the forum at www.turbosport.co.uk which provided a stack of useful info on blowing Ford engines. It also led him to some useful suppliers – and components for this engine came from all over the world. The engine itself is from a Transit van and was chosen for its lower compression ratio.
