DO YOU OWN a kit car? More importantly, is it currently roadworthy and, more important still, when was the last time you used it? I’m increasingly amazed by the number of people I talk to who reveal that they own a kit car (a good thing) but that it’s under a load of household rubbish in the back of the garage and hasn’t been used for years (a bad thing). In many cases there’s not even anything significantly wrong with the car, simply that it came off the road with a minor problem, never got repaired and sort of became forgotten. This is bad news for all sorts of reasons. For starters, from a practical perspective, cars don’t like being stored and unused for prolonged periods, meaning that the small problem that may have originally caused the car to come off the road has now been joined by all manner of other issues (seized brake calipers, rubber hose deterioration, radiator failure etc). The more you use a kit car, the more reliable it becomes. Speaking to my Features Editor Adam the other day, he revealed his little Sylva Riot has just clocked up 7000 miles in little more than a year. His car lives outside under a cover and he uses it constantly. And the upshot of this is two-fold. Every time he jumps in it he’s reminded of what fun it is and, secondly, every time he drives it he reminds others who see him that kit cars are around and, just perhaps, they should consider building/buying one themselves. I’ve put a few thousand miles on my own Cyclone since buying it earlier this year, but it’s been off the road for the last month and a half while I’ve been changing the radiator and then getting it through an MoT. But driving it to the MoT station earlier this week reminded me of just how much fun it is. While I’ve been quite happy fiddling with it in the garage and thinking about the improvements I want to make over the coming winter, nothing compares to actually firing it up and driving it. Kit cars are definitely for using... and NOT storing in the back of your garage. So the Complete Kit Car campaign starts here... we want you to put your kit car back into regular use, remind yourself why you bought it in the first place and, by using your car, help to promote the industry we love so passionately. Over the coming months and into 2010 we will be pushing hard to persuade you to use your kit car or, if you don’t currently have a car, to take the plunge and build or buy a ready-built car and find out why they’re such fun. In the first instance, I’d love you to take a picture of your car as it is, covered in stuff in the garage or in pieces awaiting a rebuild, and then a picture of it recommissioned and on the road. Who knows we may even offer a prize for the most spectacular resurrection! And to prove the point that it can be done, Adam’s dad Richard has recently dug out his Tiger Super Six he built many years ago, but which has been unused for the last two years. Time, work commitments and lack of interest may all be to blame for its incarceration in the Wilkins garage, but I’m hopeful its new lease of life will remind Richard why he built it and encourage him to use it more over the months to come. Tiger Aviator
Tiger is the latest company to re-invent the classic Seven theme. The new Aviator takes proven underpinnings and adds a slippery new body. Adam Wilkins drove it. OVER THE YEARS, we’ve seen lots of modern interpretations of the Sevenesque theme; full bodies, revised styling, added practicality and even mid-mounted engines have all featured in the quest to stand out from the crowd. Tiger Racing, however, has always kept its Seven inspired offerings relatively straight-laced. Sure, the likes of the Super Six and R6 have distinctive styling, but all Tiger’s Seven influenced designs have been clearly that. Twenty years since the Super Six launched the company, Tiger has just introduced the Aviator – and it’s obvious from the first glance that the intention is to break the mould. So what’s the thinking behind the new direction, and what will it bring to the table that isn’t already covered by the existing range? The first thing to understand is that it’s based heavily on the current RS6. The RS6 itself is a development of the R6 (both of which remain available), differing in its lighter chassis (down by 10kg to 59kg) and options of aluminium bodywork and inboard front suspension. An RS6 has been contested in the Tiger Challenge this year and set some impressive lap times, showing a clean pair of wheels to some formidable competition in the process. The plan with the Aviator was to increase its top end performance through improved aerodynamics to mount a charge on cars which have inherently more slippery shapes – Tigers often race in mixed grids with wildly varying oppostition. At the same time, it would offer something new aesthetically and, as a side effect, increased interior space. While the Aviator borrows heavily from the proven RS6, it actually has a bespoke chassis. The suspension geometry is exactly the same, but the nose is narrower to help it cut through the air more cleanly, while the interior is wider. The overall shape of the new form is more wedge-like.

There’s an extra 3in across the driver’s hips, more room around the shoulders and even the engine bay is bigger. This aids access for maintenance and will make fitting a supercharger easier. It’s a bit of a squeeze in a ZR6, the supercharged version of the RS6 (are you keeping up at the back?).

ALONG WITH TVR, Lotus and Noble, Marcos is one of those kit car marques that successfully – for some time, at least – branched out into the mainstream sports car world and put its name on the map. It’s now 50 years since that first car designed by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin took to the race circuits, and over the last five decades there have been some heady heights and some desperate lows. From the soaring days of competing at places like Le Mans with innovative race cars, kick-starting the career of Jackie Stewart and becoming a fully fledged production car maker, to the lows of liquidation and long periods of non-production, the Marcos story has never been boring! We’ve brought together three cars that celebrate the excitement of this unique car maker. An early Gullwing is one of the machines that established Marcos as a maker of serious racing cars, the Mini Marcos brought GT ability to the masses, punched above its weight and is in production today, and a 3-litre GT represents all those models derived from Dennis Adams’ classic coupé shape. With no new models being released, Marcos may not be a manufacturer today in the accepted sense, let’s celebrate the fact that this icon of kit car history is being kept alive in spirit by enthusiastic owners and a ready supply of new spare parts to keep existing cars on the road...

With the increasing popularity of the skeletal kit car, it was only a matter of time before someone would apply Locost principles and scratch build their own derivative. CKC meets Martin Bickell and his homebuilt Motaleira.
THERE IS A wicked side to Martin Bickell, the owner and builder of the Motaleira. His exoskeletal car may have been inspired by the Ariel Atom, but it was never his intention to build anything close to a replica, and the Atom front nosecone was only used because a damaged one came up second-hand and it speeded the build towards its impending date with an SVA inspector. But when he posted pics of his part-built creation on the Ariel Atom forum the response he got was not generally positive. At the time he’d not thought of a name for his car... but Motaleira seemed appropriate. Write it on a sheet of paper, hold it up to a mirror and see what we mean! Martin is not a novice kit car builder. In 1987 he bought a Mirage Countach kit and, after five years of work, had the car almost complete before running out of cash. He’d ended up making endless parts for the car, and found that he enjoyed the creative aspects of the build. “I like building stuff, working things out and then turning them into something that works,” he says. “It gives me a buzz.” And his next project would certainly test his talents. Over the coming seven years he built a Formula 1 style car for the road, with tandem seating and based around a Rover 214 donor car (including using the transversely mounted 1.4-litre K-series engine. He’d built the chassis, suspension, all the fibreglass bodywork... everything. It certainly helped him that for five years he worked as a welding fabricator, but the engineering is all self-taught and he still faces many of the challenges that will be familiar to any more conventional kit car enthusiast. For starters, he built the F1-2 (as he called it) and now the Motaleira in the tiny single garage attached to his house. Everything was created here, in a garage so small that when we run the car back into the garage after the pictures, it’s easier if we get out first and then push the car in – it takes up all the available floor space! The Motaleira kicked off in 2007. Martin liked the exposed chassis design of the Atom and he went onto the owners’ club forum and was interested to see that a number of owners had posted pictures of the chassis of the Atom, without any of the bodywork. What struck him was how simple the design was, with conventional front and rear structures for the suspension and engine ensemble, joined by the Atom’s four main curving and triangulated chassis rails. His design brief for his own car was equally simple... a car with an exposed chassis design, a bike engine in the back,

and a suspension package that would allow him to overcome the speed humps that litter the roads around his south London home. The last criteria was important, because it meant that conventional coil-over dampers were out of the question and Martin instead sourced air suspension more usually found on American lowrider custom cars. It allows his to drop the Motaleira’s chassis onto the tarmac or, more importantly, raise the ride height as he’s driving in order to traverse the pesky speed humps that caused such a headache with his previous F1-2. The process of the build is covered elsewhere in the CKC Workshop on page 64. It took 18 months to get the car to a complete state, and a further four months to overcome the beaurocracy of SVA and registration. But the result is a very crazy car... With its matt black chassis there’s something quite Mad Max-ish about the Motaleira. The exposed frame adds to the military feel of a car that looks far more purposeful than it does pretty. By contrast, the second-hand Atom nosecone seems almost a distraction. Martin’s undecided about it, disliking the obvious link with a car he genuinely had no intention of copying. We suspect it may well get changed in due course. The hand painted chassis rails also detract from a car that’s otherwise meticulously assembled. The rush to SVA is partially to blame, but Martin was also determined not to end up with something that was so tidy he was afraid to use it. Atom forum members were often trying to find solutions to stop paint chips and damage to their exposed chassis rails, and Martin didn’t want to be worrying about that. Instead, it’s obvious that he’s passionate about gadgets. Air suspension aside, the cockpit of the Motaleira appears more like an aircraft’s flight deck, such are the number of LED screens, buttons and lights. An Innovate 16 gauge to the right of the steering wheel allows fine-tuning of the fuel mixture via the Power Commander fitted to the injected R1 engine. The Veypor gauge on the steering wheel covers all the usual instrumentation, such as speed, revs, etc but also allows for 0-60mph runs via a built-in accelerometer. An Acumen gear indicator sits top left on the homemade dash binnacle, while tucked down below the dash is a further LED read-out specific to the engine’s Power Commander, where the engine map can be modified. Controls for the suspension to lift it up or down are operated by the
