THIS MONTH
THE QUALITY OF today’s kit car offerings is something we can all be proud of. Complete Kit Car was at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, and the display of cars on our stand and of kit cars on stands around us was terrific. The comments from people who’d never previously given kit cars a second thought was overwhelmingly positive – they couldn’t believe how good they were. And it wasn’t just ourselves flying the flag for the kit car scene... Suffolk Sportscars, Chesil, Sebring and even the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club put on great displays in an area of the show that was largely dominated by homegrown sports cars. My thanks must go to the private enthusiasts who put cars inside our marquee, and also the manufacturers who supported us with our outside display. They were all fab. Two intriguing things worthy of particular mention include the response to Wilkins’ Sylva Riot and Gardner Douglas’ 427 replica. Adam’s Riot was tucked into the stand and was the most obvious ‘kit car’ (simply because it wasn’t a replica) of all the machines in display. But did that mean it was overlooked or looked down upon? Far from it. There were constantly people all over the little machine and, more importantly, asking questions about the cost of the build... they were amazed by how affordable it was and loved the looks of it. And then there was GD’s 427... The Cobra shape still wows the crowds, and then some. The company’s Andy Burrows was often overwhelmed with visitors, and as I watched from our vantage point inside the marquee it was easy to see why. His isn’t the most authentic replica on the scene but not only did it look absolutely sensational, but the build quality was as high as I’ve seen anywhere. The attention to detail is meticulous and the package, with modern LS V8 power, big 18in alloys and contemporary interior, is utterly mouthwatering. No wonder the crowds loved it. Having driven endless Cobra replicas over the years, I found myself falling in love with the genre all over again.

It’s a first for any kit car magazine that I can remember, but this month every reader can claim a free DVD from us. Featuring most of the main players within the Lotus Seven inspired replica scene, Ultimate Kitcar – Lotus Seven Replicas is a full length DVD which I produced for a company called Minifilms. It’s a great fun product where you can see the cars being driven hard on the track. The most important part is that it’s free and you can claim your copy by heading for the CKC website, www.completekitcar.co.uk and filling out the online application form. I hope you enjoy it! The exoskeletal concept seems to be the kit car of the moment. Our feature on page 16 showcases no fewer than six different manufacturer designs that are currently available or on their way soon. What’s more, there are now people building their own versions at home, fabricating their own chassis and installing the engine of their choice. It’s a wonderfully exciting new direction for the scene, generating a buzz of enthusiasm which reminds me of when we first started seeing bike engines come into the scene. And we’ll continue our examination of caged cars next month, with an in-depth report on two of these home-built specials. Both are spectacular, so don’t miss it.

Having featured the build of Phil Tait’s immaculate SDR V-Storm in the last issue, this month the editor has called in the competition to see just how this increasingly popular sector of the kit car market is shaping up. A NEW KIT car genre is opening up before our eyes. What may have begun with inspiration from the Ariel Atom is rapidly morphing into a more diverse collection of new products, all with their structure on show rather than concealed beneath bodywork. What’s also intriguing is not only the diversity of styles and engineering solutions, but also the build costs, with the mighty Audi turbo Deronda taking the high ground in the upper teens, with home grown specials at just a few grand at the other end of the scale. Like the kit car scene as a whole, there’s something for everyone within the caged car phenomenon. In this feature we’ve gathered together
the two main contenders, the SDR V-Storm and MEV Rocket, while profiling the other up and coming models we’re aware of. What we can also be certain of is that these won’t be the last. This scene still has room for considerable growth.
SDR V-STORM The chances are that anyone who read Phil Tait’s account of building his SDR VStorm in last month’s issue, will have guessed the finished result would be rather special. His attention to detail, and willingness to create unique fabrications for his car, meant it was always going to be good. Little wonder that when I meet him for

FIRING UP A Dax Rush V8 always triggers a sense of anticipation. The mature, meaningful exhaust note is imbued with drama that a four-pot can’t muster. You quickly start to use the throttle pedal to up the tempo and volume of the twin side pipes as much as you do to generate kinetic energy. It’s a full-on sensory experience that becomes as addictive as it is thrilling. Right now, though, I’m resisting temptation and relying on the massive low-rev torque to ease the car away from the Dax factory and onto the M11 without waking up half of Harlow before breakfast. We may have collected the car from DJ Sportscars’ works, but this is actually a privately owned car. It was built by Dax engineer Craig Brister for his brother Justin. It looks in fantastic shape for its four years since completion. It’s a high spec car with looks to match – a classy dark blue with contrasting brightwork and light coloured interior. Justin stopped counting the build cost when it got to £26,000, but he was still keeping track of the figures when he bought a brand new 4.6-litre Rover V8 from DJ Ellis. Many of the factory fresh components within were immediately replaced with upgraded equivalents during the full rebuild – the bill for the upgraded engine was an eye-watering £11,000. The result is a beautifully free-revving, lively engine that produces around 300bhp and an earth-moving 365lb ft of torque. Think of it as an engine with a car on it. It certainly feels that way around town. The leaden clutch and maladroit steering combine to make the car feel
cumbersome at low speed, and you can tell the engine is keen to get going, too. The effort required to drive it through town can cloud your initial impressions of the car, but thankfully traffic is light this morning and it’s not long before we’re on the motorway and bound for Cheshire’s favourite biker’s road, the Cat & Fiddle. It’s named after the pub at its peak and is more accurately the A537 that links Buxton and Macclesfield. It’s a road I’ve heard of, as I’m sure you have too, but until now I’ve never driven it. We’ll meet John Kinsey at the pub with his recently built Ford Cosworth powered Rush. He previously assembled a V8 engined version and now has a Dax Tojeiro on order, so it’s pretty apparent that he likes the way they do things at DJ Sportscars. Justin’s V8 Rush is doing a great job of munching big chunks of the M11, M25 and M1. An initial small ache in the right bum cheek hasn’t worsened so I can conclude that the leather seats are supportive, buffeting is kept down to a manageable level with the long sidescreens in place and, at a settled 70mph, the windnoise and bassy engine note don’t preclude conversation. Given this chance to stretch its long legs, the Rush suddenly becomes altogether more civilised and obedient. Of course, just occasionally there’s the temptation to give it the berries and pass a clump of more mundane traffic. No need to change down from fifth – the bulk of torque is with you throughout most of the rev range. Prod the loud pedal and the Edlebrock fed throbber takes the merest moment to

Hawk Ace
The AC Ace lives in the shadow of the V8 Cobra it spawned. For those who remember the classic straight six engined Brit, Hawk Cars offers a faithful replica, while its agent, Talon Sportscars, will build you one. CKC drives its latest BMW-powered example. WE DON’T OFTEN see Hawk Ace replicas, which is strange because, with build costs starting from comfortably under £20,000 for an all MGB based car, it’s the most affordable step on the Hawk Cars ladder. Even when you throw in a 2.5-litre Triumph straight six as an upgrade, you’ll get the usual terrific Hawk quality for a surprisingly small outlay. Yet still the Ace doesn’t capture kit buyers’ imaginations in quite the same way as the headline grabbing, limelight hogging 289 and 427 Cobra replicas. It’s a shame, since the oft-
overlooked Ace is meritorious in its own right: it has rarity, classic British styling and its own unique charm up its sleeve. Could that be on the cusp of change? Hawk agent Talon Sportscars’ latest demonstrator shuns the classic sourced four-pot MGB and six-cylinder Triumph units in favour of an altogether more modern six-pot. BMW’s 2.5-litre is modern, smooth, tuneful, relatively efficient and convenient. So the question we need to answer is whether modern German engineering improves or detracts from the

Ace’s olde worlde British appeal. Will it enhance the overall package and allow it to compete with its V8 stablemates, or will it jar with its classic credentials? This isn’t the first BMW powered Ace. When a customer approached Hawk Cars with the idea a few years ago, he was steered in the direction of Dudley Shearman’s Talon operation. At that time, Talon was probably best known to specialise in GTM products (and even operated from GTM’s old premises in Sutton Bonington). The company’s work is still diverse, but for three years it has been an official outlet for Hawk turnkey cars and kits. That first BMW powered car marked the start of the agency and neither company has looked back since. Dudley was quick to recognise the potential of using modern power in unison with the Hawk’s classic lines. The installation is a cinch, it is a lot cheaper than rebuilding a Triumph engine, produces plenty of power and is easy to live with. So while the choice of an Ace as a demonstrator may raise some eyebrows when the firm could have chosen to showcase a more popular Cobra replica, the BMW engine makes the prospect of this new offering very promising. Things are just as compelling from behind the wheel. The engine, still controlled by the donor’s ECU, fires without hesitation and settles to a smooth idle. There are countless variations of the engine
available, but the one Talon uses is the single Vanos 2.5-litre version which is good for a useful 190bhp. There are some lower powered units around, but the difference in price is negligible. On the move, the engine is perfectly matched to the Ace’s intrinsically biddable nature. As it strides through its rev range, the straight six feels big-hearted and relaxed at the same time, full of urge yet unhurried. All the while, it emits that characterful, near exotic rhythm unique to six-cylinder engines. OK, it lacks the authenticity of a Triumph’s carb fed induction, but the baseline is correct. It’s a six-pot soundtrack on MP3 rather than vinyl; only purists will mourn the difference, and even they’d likely concede the benefits of modern technology over old. The brilliant thing about this BMW engine, though, is how well it dovetails with the Ace’s otherwise classic appeal. The car hasn’t been smothered by the modernity of its engine, instead it’s enhanced by the user-friendliness of a contemporary powerplant. So while the engine gets on with boringly worthy things like using its fuel relatively frugally, starting first time, and not needing its carbs balanced every five minutes, you can just concentrate on using and enjoying this wonderful car. And there’s plenty to relish. The driving position is classic limbs outstretched stuff, while the classic looking bucket seats offer enough comfort and
