I’m not a good passenger, but there are times when you know you can’t refuse the offer to jump in the wrong side of a car and let someone else do the pedalling. The first involved Gardner Douglas’s hyperquick Lola T70 demonstrator at full tilt around Barkston Heath’s tortuously tight sprint circuit. Unbelievably quick. Period. The second occasion happened when I met some people at Silverstone and managed to blag a ride around the F1 circuit... in a genuine 1966 Ford GT40. Does it get any better? You can read more about both occasions in a forthcoming issue. We’ve had loads of terrific response to the arrival of Tiff Needell as a monthly contributor within CKC. It’s a very exciting time for us. This month he’s been on duty at Le Mans, but couldn’t help noticing the proliferation of high quality replicas around. More importantly, Tiff has homed in on the very essence of kit car ownership, that it’s not just the cars that matter, but what you do with them and who you meet while you do it. He’s most definitely one of us! We’re all recovering from the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed where CKC was once again on a flagwaving exercise for the industry. If I may say so myself, I reckon we did a pretty good job. See page 26 for our report.

DNA 5cudo
The new 5cudo appears to share a lot of its DNA (do you see what we did there?) with the existing 4Thirty, but they’re actually very different animals. Adam Wilkins gets a first drive of the newcomer. FIXED ROOF ASIDE, DNA Automotive’s new 5cudo appears very similar to the firm’s existing 4Thirty. Since both replicate the Ferrari 430, that’s kinda the point. There is a slight visual difference, actually. The new car is a replica of the 430 Scuderia, whereas the MR2 based car replicates the standard Ferarri. But beneath the similar GRP skins, the two cars are distinctly different. Each brings its own unique qualities to the DNA range. The 5cudo’s prime raison d´étre is to offer an affordable path to Ferrari replica ownership. It’s that aim that led DNA to choose the unloved but competent Ford Cougar coupé as its donor vehicle which has, in turn, carried with it some practical benefits over the 4Thirty’s Toyota MR2 donor. Will it tread on the toes of its established stablemate, or is it distinct enough to complement it? When the Ferrari replica boom first took off, the target car was the Ferrari 355 and the donor of choice was the Mk2 Toyota MR2. The contemporary sub-£15,000 build costs were arguably a large part of the appeal and helped the concept gain the momentum to become an established part of the kit car arena. As time progressed, the trend turned to the Mk3 MR2. As well as being a more expensive donor to buy, it also added the complication of a soft-top. While it’s nice to be able to open the roof, it adds the expense of a replica hood arrangement and also encourages replicators to go to town on copying the Ferrari interior. There’s little point carefully recreating the Ferrari’s exterior appearance if all the world can peer in at the shiny plastic Toyota interior the moment the top is dropped. Consequently, the cost of a Ferrari replica build grew to the point where it’s now easy to blow over £20,000 on a rebodied Toyota. It’s still a popular concept, but DNA was keen to return the idea to its roots and get a self build cost down below the £15,000 mark again. Taking inflation into account, that would make a Ferrari replica

WHEN THE ORIGINAL homemade exhaust mount recently broke on his BMW-based Marlin Sportster, owner Patrick Short did what comes naturally to someone who is now used to a kit car which uses seemingly upmarket and modern donor components... he searched the BMW range and ended up utilising exhaust mounts more normally found on a BMW 8-series – they work perfectly. Looking back, it was a similar situation when he was building the car back in 2006 and looking to fit a shorter gear lever than the original 3-series item that came with his 325 donor car. With help
2.5-litre engine now stroked to 2.8 litres. Just one of many BMW components in the Sportster.
from various BMW forums, he worked out the different lengths and ‘gearing’ of all the BMW gear levers that would fit, and opted for a Z4 item that was the right length and gave a perfect short throw between the cogs. Once you buy into the benefits of a neoteric donor car, the potential for utilising components across the range can yield superb results. And the end result of Patrick’s two and a half year build of a Marlin Sportster (ably assisted and co-owned with his brother Richard) is an understated car with an undeniable sense of quality. (of course!) and glowing in a superb deep blue metallic finish, the Sportster looks spot on. The detailing is just right and the cream leather interior adds a splash of opulence to a machine that otherwise keeps its upmarket credentials largely hidden. The rewards of a relatively extended build period become apparent the more you look around the car and Patrick and Richard talk about the process. Just two screws hold the hinging bonnet in place, making it a two-minute job to remove it for vastly improved engine bay access. The engine side panels are similarly swift to take off the car, all of which is good news when the engine bay itself is dominated by the substantial Beemer straight six engine. This ease of access was designed into the car from the start and those who read last month’s account

of the build may remember that the duo ran the Marlin unpainted for a year, before stripping it back down to a rolling chassis and sending the assorted panels off to Specialised Paintwork near Reading to get them painted. As such, everything was designed with this in mind... with items such as the rear arches being located by rivnuts for simple removal and the front chrome grille zip-tied in place behind the nose-cone rather than bonded permanently. When the panels came back from Specialised Paintwork, Patrick and Richard were delighted with the results, but needed to be ultra careful with the reassembly to avoid any unsightly
scratches. Once again, their preparation was vital and the end result shows off the paintshop’s superb finish to perfection. Extensive use of Dynamat insulation in the interior is another example of the pair’s determination to give the Marlin an upmarket ‘BMW-esque’ feel. Having now been on the road for almost three years Patrick’s in no doubt that its use has been justified... the doors close with real assurance and substance, while the interior is vibration free and the insulation also helps to reduce heat soak into the cockpit from the large engine and underslung exhaust. And the Dynomat goes hand-in-hand with Patrick and Richard’s interest in
more serious in-car entertainment. A Pioneer head unit is located in a new centre console area and backed up by Omnes Audio dash mounted speakers and Alpine units in each footwell. They’re powered by an Alto Mobile amplifer and all the associated wiring throughout the car is to top spec audio standards. A thoughtful build meant only minor niggles once the car finally hit the road. After the obvious period setting up the suspension geometry and getting the damper settings about right, the only significant hitch was the straight six engine’s cooling. The standard radiator was really struggling to manage the heat generated by the 2.5-litre engine when

| DON’T BELIEVE there’s such thing as a typical kit car owner but, if there were, Elliott Hopkins definitely wouldn’t be a candidate. Despite having built a Westfield, he’s not a follower of the scene. One glance at the car he has created is all you need to realise that he hasn’t been influenced by kit car conventions. Your attention is immediately arrested by those bright yellow wire wheels yet, even without them, this car would have a distinct character. Those classic wheels aside, the car has a fresh, modern appeal – which is perhaps unsurprising given that Elliott is 21 now and started the build when he was just 16.
He bought the car in part restored state and, initially, continued where the previous owner left off. He thought it would be finished in three weeks, until he decided to strip it back to a bare chassis and embark upon a thorough rebuild. Because Elliott worked at the time for the family business, Specialised Automobile Services, he had access to all manner of equipment you wouldn’t find in your average garage. Lathes, CNC machines and CAD have all been employed during the car’s build. With the car down to a bare chassis, Elliott prepared it for powdercoating before delivering it to one of his company’s suppliers. While it was away, he cleaned up and prepared the car’s
suspension. At this time, the colours of the yellow dampers and black springs were reversed. It was this decision that influenced the black and yellow theme that would last throughout the build. At this stage, the Fiat twin-cam engine was sent away to be rebuilt. “I have no interest in engines,” says Elliott. “I just wanted to install it and shut the bonnet on it.” Once the engine was back, there was a little work still to do. Even with the remote gear linkage in use, the gear lever was too far forward for comfort. He made his own remote linkage, and also modified much of the MG based pedal box. The ageing donor components caused a few headaches along the way. For instance, when a new clutch arm was needed, Elliott resorted to buying a complete Fiat gearbox for that one component. There were occassions when he thought binning the Fiat engine in favour of a modern
