January 2010
Time to change Father Christmas and his little helper, Evie the Elf took refuge from the torrential rain that hit Fontwell Park Racecourse just in time for last year’s Santa Fun Run. Sitting in their camper van grotto they still managed to smile even though the wind was whistling and the rain was beating down on them. After 2008’s washout we thought it would be a case of third time lucky but how wrong we were! We really have had enough of wet straggly beards, soggy trousers and squelchy boots so have decided to hold something a bit more quirky this year - A Santa ‘Sun’ Run which will take place at Fontwell Park Racecourse on SUNDAY 15TH AUGUST. Do come and join us.
Turn your unwanted jewellery into cash for St Wilfrid’s Do you have old jewellery sitting in a box or hidden in a bottom drawer? Maybe an odd earring or two, lying on the dressing table, a much loved bracelet that isn’t quite the bee’s knees or a broken chain that you never got round to having repaired? If the answer is yes then now is the time to dig it out and donate your unwanted items to St Wilfrid’s Hospice Jewellery Recycling scheme. Local jeweller Timothy Roe has teamed up with St Wilfrid’s to provide a fundraising scheme that helps the environment as well as boosting funds for the Hospice. Timothy, whose shop can be found in South Street, Chichester, will accept
anything containing gold, silver, platinum or other precious metals. All items, which could include necklaces, coins and cameo brooches will be valued either as an item, based on antique or second hand prices or at the best possible scrap price calculated using that day’s gold prices. This sum of money will be donated to the Hospice. Items of jewellery can be dropped into Timothy’s shop in South Street, a stone’s throw from the market cross in the city centre or, posted via Royal Mail ‘special delivery’ service to Timothy Roe, 12 South Street, Chichester, PO19 1EH. A receipt will be given/sent for donated items.
Donate to St Wilfrid’s Hospice for free! You can donate to St Wilfrid’s Hospice every time you buy goods on line with The Giving Machine. Simply go to www.thegivingmachine.co.uk, register as a giver and select St Wilfrid’s Hospice as a beneficiary. Then whenever you visit hundreds of online retailers via The Giving Machine website, including big names such as Amazon and Tesco, they pay the money which would normally be destined to advertising agencies to us! It costs you nothing and helps support the Hospice, not bad eh?
Our first ‘Knitchicks’ party Beryl Howes and members of the West Meads Craft Club recently invited us to join them at their Christmas Party. We couldn’t resist taking a picture of them with some of the many knitted stockings they have made for the Hospice. A big thank you to all our fabulous knitters who, responded to our plea for Christmas goodies, and helped raise almost £1,000. However, your hands won’t be idle for long. We are already planning Easter treats so if you have any ideas or patterns you would like to share with us please call fundraising on 01243 755181.

Welcome... to our first newsletter of the year. 2009 seems to have passed very quickly indeed and was an exciting year for everyone connected with St Wilfrid’s. The launch of our new Hospice at Home service, our first Moonlight Walk
and receiving our 10,000th referral were just some of the highlights of the year. It is amazing to realise just how many people have been helped by the support of St Wilfrid’s and the special care that has been given over the years. Our reach
extends even further than that when we take into account our education programme and the number of people that we are able to teach about end of life care. We are very lucky to have such an excellent education department and a staff team who are skilled and experienced and more than willing to share that knowledge with others.
A heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who support the work of St Wilfrid's. I hope that by reading the newsletter you get a real sense of how your support makes a difference to those we care for. We couldn’t do this without your help, so thanks again. Alison Moorey Chief Executive
Full of Christmas Cheer
Give us a break!
Serving hot mulled wine to customers is not usually on the cards for Deputy Trading Manager Juliet Blackstaffe and her mother-in-law Audrey Blackstaffe who, as a volunteer, works once a week in the Donations Centre in Summersdale helping to sell good quality books and furniture. However that’s what the two of them got up to when they, along with staff from Summersdale Garage, invited old and new customers to join them in an afternoon of Christmas festivities. Special guest appearances from local author Kate Mosse and Santa and his two favourite reindeer Blitzen and Star, the Regis Pom Pom dancers and Punch and Judy helped to make the afternoon a great success. £820 was raised which will be split between St Wilfrid’s and the Snowdrop Trust.
Hard hats and hammers were the order of the day when Hospice furniture shop manager, Tina Varney and her crew broke through the ‘party’ wall to the shop next door in Clarence Gate, Bognor Regis. The large square unit is ideal for displaying room sets which give shoppers a better idea of how the furniture will look in their own home. Tina can’t wait to show off the extra space to all her customers and says, “The shop looks fantastic, the extra space has made it really open and light and we can now stock a wider range of donated furniture.” Do pop along to the shop which is open between 9.00 am – 5.00 pm six days a week – you might just pick up a bargain.

Calling all Artists! Last year the first St Wilfrid’s Open Art Competition, in association with Pallant House Gallery, was a great success and this year looks set to be even bigger and better. In 2009 the competition attracted submissions of over 250 art works from 164 different artists, raising £6,500, and we hope to build on this for 2010.
Works in all media can be submitted and last year’s exhibition included paintings, sculpture, photography and collage; as long as the work is no more than 80cm at its largest point it can be entered. Artists of all ages and all levels can take part– it really is an ‘Open’ competition – and those lucky enough to be selected will have their work displayed in Chichester’s very own Pallant House Gallery. Our team of judges will then award prizes to their favourite works from the exhibition. Entries close on Wednesday 31st March and the exhibition of selected works will be open to the public at Pallant House Gallery from Friday 4th June – Thursday 1st July. For further information and to enter online visit www.openart.stwh.co.uk, email openart@stwh.co.uk or call 01243 755181.

There’s more to life than just being a couch potato Counting jigsaw pieces, checking clothes are in size order, serving customers and sorting out other people’s clothing is all in a day’s (or maybe a couple of hours) work for 15 year old schoolgirl Alice McIlwraith. Alice, who is a pupil at Philip Howard School in Barnham, is currently undertaking the first level of her Duke of Edinburgh award. To achieve her bronze award Alice has to complete a personal programme of activities in four sections which include helping people in the community, getting fitter, developing skills and an expedition. How better to help people than by volunteering at one of St Wilfrid’s Hospice shops! Alice’s Mum contacted Margaret Dowling, Manager at Barnham to ask if she would consider Alice as a volunteer. Margaret invited Alice to come along and have a look around and she has never looked back. Alice says, “At first I was a bit worried about working in the shop and messing up the till or breaking it.” And has she? “No!” Alice so enjoys working at the shop that after six months she has chosen to continue working for a couple of hours each week. She continues, “It’s really worth doing. I get to meet people and learn new skills which I can put into practice when I am older and looking for a job. All the staff and volunteers make me feel so welcome. If younger people want to work in one of the Hospice shops then they should.” Manager Margaret says, “We would love to have more

younger people working with us. They have different ideas to us oldies and it is surprising how well it works when we mix all the ideas together.” Margaret’s niece, Madeleine Cork has been working at the shop for the past 18 months. Also working towards her Duke of Edinburgh award, Madeleine used to work every Saturday but, for the time being, is now studying hard for her ‘A’ levels. Both these girls know that volunteering has helped them develop new skills, fulfil their potential and, also, will look good on their CVs. If you could spare a few hours each week to help in any of our shops or the Donations Centre, please contact Trading Manager Siobhan Robinson on 01243 755805 or Deputy Trading Manager, Juliet Blackstaffe on 01243 776712.
Help the Hospices Conference
Jacqui Bourne
All independent Hospices in the UK are members of Help the Hospices which plays an important part in supporting Hospices in many ways including education. In November the Help the Hospices conference in Harrogate was held over three days and attended by over 500 delegates from Hospices around the UK and some even further afield! St Wilfrid's was represented by Alison Moorey (Chief Executive), Jacqui Bourne (Lead Nurse Inpatient Services) and Cathy Newsam (Day Sister). Jacqui and Cathy proudly presented posters
about areas of work they wished to share and Anne Bennett’s (Complementary Therapy Co-ordinator) poster on Bach Flowers remedies was displayed on her behalf. As ever the conference was a rich mixture of lively debate and sharing of information and best practice amongst those involved in Hospice care. Attending such conferences always brings great benefit as we work closely with colleagues in other Hospices and always bring back some new ideas as well as sharing some good ideas of our own with others!
Congratulations to our Christmas Prize Draw winners 1st PRIZE – A Renault Twingo - Stewart Lowe in East Wittering 2nd PRIZE – 8 tickets to Blues on the Farm – Gladys Reading in Chichester Thanks to everyone who bought tickets helping us to raise £10,000 and, if you weren’t a winner, you can always have another go this year!

Witterings Christmas Craft Fair
Sunday 7th February ‘Let’s Entertain You’ Jubilee Hall, Shrubs Lane, Middleton-on-Sea
We have been organising the Beach House Christmas Craft Fair for nine years now with the help of the owner, Susan Marks, and to date have made a total of £12,355. We have a variety of stalls, however, our main profit comes from the Hospice stall selling Christmas cards and our stall which sells anything we can get hold of pertaining to the festive season. It is manned by Ken Dowley who would sell ice to Eskimos! We are looked after with copious cups of tea from Susan's staff and enjoy a good lunch into the bargain!! All the committee is on hand over the two days as well as much appreciated help from other loyal supporters. Marion Juggins

Donnington and Apuldram Support Group Donnington and Apuldram Support Group had three tables, including books, tombola and a raffle at the Autumn Fayre raising £251 – a big slice of the £697 raised during the event at Manor Nursery. Many of our supporters have home collection boxes which are handed in to be emptied and counted, usually in January, at Donnington Hall. These
boxes raise about £700 a year. If you would like a box please contact Roy Miller on 01243 783472. The paper skip at the hall is always amazingly successful and even in this economic climate raised almost £1,300 during the last year. Please continue to bring your papers to the hall skips. Still getting ‘kicks’ out of life… Meg Stuart, aged 77 hasn’t always been a member of Wittering Support Group. In fact, her life has been one of showbiz ever since she left school and started her first job in an hotel opposite the pier in Great Yarmouth. Having enjoyed ballet and tap classes when she was younger, she went to see The Tiller Girls who were performing on the pier and managed to get an audition with the head Tiller girl. She got the job, moved to Soho, rehearsed for three weeks and went straight into pantomime in Bradford for 14 weeks. She married her musician husband Alan in 1956 and
now at the age of 78, he calls himself the oldest stuntman in the business! They have two daughters and both lead a very busy life. Before moving south, they lived in Surrey and just over three years ago they met Ellie and Ken Dowley who are members of the Wittering Support Group. They obviously thought Meg an ideal candidate for their group as, by her own admission, she doesn’t like to sit at home and likes helping people. Although not on the committee Meg now gets her ‘kicks’ helping with the Christmas Fair, manning stalls, serving refreshments, stewarding at the Coastal
Challenge and usually does almost everything that Chairman, Marion Juggins asks of her - apart from washing up! Meg has nothing but praise for Marion and says, “ We let Marion know when we are available and she works out
who is working where and when. And she always writes us a personal letter of thanks.” If you are interested in joining one of our Support Groups, please call Jill Dennison on 01243 755827.

Many people would have regarded retirement at the age of 62 as just that, getting up late and having breakfast when most people have lunch. Not John Rigg, who has just died at the age of 95. Within two years, and after a lifetime in Kent he and his wife, Pauline moved to Pagham where he joined PagMen and put himself forward for local council elections. And then came his greatest challenge, the Hospice. He was, for many years, the driving force behind the Bognor Support Group and its many fund-raising activities. The Bognor shop was created after a particularly successful jumble sale in empty premises in the town centre. When the Hospice finally opened in 1987, he stayed on for another six years until 1993 as one of the Directors. His tireless, unstinting efforts to raise money for St Wilfrid’s Hospice will be what many today will remember him for and it is difficult to find a finer legacy to the community in which he lived and a finer tribute to him. BEADYS Merry Quizmas
Southbourne Support Group Southbourne Support Group stepped back in time in November when they held a supper to commemorate the start of World War 2 – entitled ‘We’ll Eat Again’. Many guests entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing in the period and a prize was awarded for the best wartime outfit worn by a lady and a gentleman. After supper we enjoyed a sing-song of Forces Favourites accompanied by Dan Wood on the piano. Over £900 was raised for the Hospice.
Thank you to everyone who helped BEADYS Merry Quizmas raise £1,300 for the Hospice. Our Craft Fair was also very successful netting £600, and we plan to hold another similar event this year. During the last nine months BEADYS has raised in excess of £9,000. Our next fundraising event is a Bridge Drive in Eastergate Parish Hall on MONDAY 15TH FEBRUARY at 2.00 pm. Woodger Believe It?! We were absolutely delighted recently to receive a grant of £80,450 from The F G Woodger Trust, a charitable trust based in West Wittering. For the last three years, The F G Woodger Trust has generously supported our CNS service and this year the Trustees not only agreed to continue their funding for this community service but also to make a substantial donation towards our new Hospice at Home service as well. “We are very keen to
support charities which deliver good value for money and real benefit to our local community”, said Richard Shrubb, Chairman of The F G Woodger Trust. “Many of us know people who have experienced the excellent care provided by St Wilfrid’s and the Trustees feel it is important to support the Hospice to ensure it can continue to offer this valuable service to our community.” A very big THANK YOU to The F G Woodger Trust!
A cut above the rest
No-one enjoys a bad hair day and our patients are very grateful to Pam Snelling who comes in to the ward each week and offers the chance of a wash and set. Some patients are too unwell to benefit but most weeks someone is able to enjoy the uplift of a hairdo and after 20 years at St Wilfrid’s, Pam is very experienced at helping our frail patients. Prior to being at the Hospice Pam worked on a voluntary basis at St Richard’s Hospital and has been a volunteer hairdresser since the youngest of her three children was three years old - thirty eight years ago! Husband Barrie has always been very supportive of Pam’s wish to support the work of the Hospice. Pam has also seen many changes since her first days here – one being the shorter length of stay for inpatients. She says, “Years ago some of the
patients were here for quite long periods and wanted their hair done to celebrate anniversaries or birthdays. Nowadays I may only see them once or twice so there isn’t a chance to build up a rapport with them. “I remember one chap who was frightened of coming into the Hospice but wanted me to cut his hair. I told him I only cut hair in the Hospice so he would have to come in. I think this broke the ice and he was later admitted as an inpatient.” Not only does Pam give up her time for the Hospice she also donates any money given to her by patients or their families towards buying Christmas presents for our inpatients and Day Hospice patients. Not a lot of people knew that but they do now! If you would like to find out more about volunteering at the Hospice please contact Emma Clark in the Volunteer’s office on 01243 755815.

Some say 20 years... is a life sentence but not for auxiliary nurse Gina Ruff who on receiving her long service award from Chairman of the Board, Anthony Wickins said “It has always been a privilege to be at the Hospice. “My life has been so rich working here and we do have fun. I have seen many changes over the years including the building of the Day Hospice, the provision of complementary therapies and the addition of the Education department which has a fantastic reputation amongst other Hospices.”

Did You Know? Every time one of our large blue paper banks is filled this generates around one tonne of paper which raises around £60 for the Hospice as well as saving 17 trees. In the year 08/09 our 23 paper banks raised £21,793.72 That through the Reclaim-it scheme, which collects empty printer cartridges from local businesses and recycles the plastic as well as the contents, we have raised just under £100 in the last two months That Mopay.co.uk. has developed a scheme to turn old mobile phones into valuable funds for charity. Since April last year we have raised £150 which includes £42 for a phone with no battery and half its case missing! In the last financial year your foreign coins and pre-decimal money raised a grand total of £2,460 for the Hospice. From April to the end of November last year our shops raised £19,000 from rags and textile waste which are too damaged to sell. That your unwanted Christmas presents are most welcome at the Hospice as they can be used in one of our many raffles, tombolas or auctions. If you would like to know more about any of the above please call fundraising on 01243 755186.
University in November 2008. Who would have thought that two and a half years earlier Vicky and Sue, who came to the Hospice to complete a one-year certificate course in palliative care, would find learning such a life changing experience that they would continue their studies to diploma level! Graduating from Winchester University marks a new chapter in Vicky’s life who, was a Community Registered Nurse (RGN) with Intensive Care in Chichester, but has now found her niche working at the Hospice. Soon after graduating Vicky applied for the job of Bank Clinical Nurse Specialist and as well as this position also works on the Bank staff for the day Hospice, is contracted as a Community RGN with Hospice at Home and has completed her induction on the inpatient ward!
Vicky says, “This last year has been fabulous, I am so happy here and have been supported and made very welcome by everyone at the Hospice. Everything I have learnt through the diploma course is being put to good use.” St Wilfrid’s Hospice has a unique partnership with the local primary care trust and hospitals and in association with Winchester University can run University accredited courses free of charge to all employees of the three organisations. It’s an ideal opportunity for many people to be taught by clinicians locally, some of whom they may have only heard about or just spoken to on the phone. He’s Football Crazy Cafe owner Ricky Rayner is football-mad and now he hopes to cash in on his obsession by selling an amazing collection of football scarves to raise funds for St Wilfrid’s. Arsenal-daft Ricky, 47, gathered 160 soccer scarves from around the world during his time as owner of Rick's Cafe near the Picturedrome cinema in Linden Road. But when he moved to new premises of the same name in the town's Queensway, Ricky decided he could do without the memorabilia being on display and decided to auction them off on behalf of the Hospice. “Anyone can come in and make me an offer!”

Hospice at Home Our Hospice at Home service has been running since May last year and the report from the first six months was presented to the Board of Trustees in December. I am pleased to report that the team have cared for well over 100 patients and the impact of their work has been significant. One aim of the service is to increase choices available to patients under our care and it was good to know that 90% of the patients supported by Hospice at Home were able to die in the place of their choice. Although many people wish to die at home a significant number do wish to die in the Hospice so all areas of our service will continue to play an important role in the care and support we offer people towards the end of their lives. As part of the evaluation we asked the loved ones of patients cared for by the Hospice at Home team for their feedback and some of the comments made were as follows:
‘My family and I were amazed at how quickly the team of Hospice at Home carers became part of our daily life. They were always so professional, treated my husband with the utmost respect, ensured his dignity was maintained and showed great kindness and concern. They were an incredible support to us all. Many thanks.’ ‘It was like two giant arms encircling all of us. They brought calm to what was utter chaos in our home.’ I would like to thank all the Hospice at Home team and in particular Jane Cousins the Team Leader for the excellent care they have given to patients and families and to everyone who has supported the development of this new service which now forms an essential and highly valued part of the care that St Wilfrid's can offer those in our local community.
