Editor
Director of Communications and Marketing Component Manufacturing Advertiser.
The devastation brought by the recent hurricanes has shown us again how people will come
together at times of crisis. It is deeply reassuring to see the outpouring of support—both money and manpower—to help those whose lives have been impacted by the storms and their aftermath.
Helping Neighbors in Houston It should come as no surprise that the Truss Manufacturers Association of Texas (TMAT) chose to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. Although their September golf tournament was intended to be a fundraiser for TMAT Build/Operation Finally Home, plans were changed when so many of their friends and neighbors were affected by that incredible storm.
Helping Veterans in Omaha Our industry continues to show its commitment to giving back to the community with the Annual BCMC 5K Run/Walk for BCMC Build, which partners with Operation Finally Home to provide mortgage-free homes to veterans and their families. I’m happy to say that The Advertiser is a sponsor of this event which combines a fun and healthy activity with an opportunity to help others.

I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying there are additional causes we all choose to support throughout the year—and many of those are because of our friends. I would have never heard of the Foundation Fighting Blindness if it had not been for Stan Sias. Committed to helping his son Dylan’s best friend, Stan and his family participated in the annual September Vision Walk in Minneapolis, and those of us who couldn’t join them were still able to help sponsor Jack’s Jed-Eye team again this year. Friends, neighbors, or even strangers—our industry always steps up to help.

T
he quickening of innovation will be on display at BCMC this month, and, undoubtedly, so will be the uptake. Suppliers use this platform to launch new products, sometimes rather humbly. Art DePauw sold his prototype “automated” saw to two industry giants, Charlie Barnes and Dave Chambers, with Polaroid snapshots. And not all inventions are ready for prime time. Dick Rotto, scion of Trussway, praised Auto-Jigging at Louisville BCMC 25 years ago, but his company waited a dozen years to buy it—albeit a much advanced version. But this year’s best ideas won’t be displayed humbly, and many will be ready for prime time, making for record results.

BCMC Innovataions continued
Where we stand, 50+ years into our industry’s cyclical turns, explains our current opportunities. While we are still using upgraded versions of our 1960s roller gantries and saws, they have been fundamentally transformed in the 1980s. Interestingly, automation entered truss cutting and fabrication during the housing down cycle, explaining their belated uptake. Likewise, robotic truss assembly faltered due to its introduction as housing bottomed. Today, however, our low level of housing starts suggests continued opportunity. And truss manufacturers, in the aggregate, have enjoyed the most stable 3 to 5 years of growth in history. Stability is the key to manufacturing efficiency, and the best justification for new equipment purchases. When a plant operator can be reasonably sure that he’ll have a base level of business for the next several years, he can easily determine the likely return of an equipment investment. And he is likely to purchase new equipment for the following reasons: • Capital from lenders is abundant, “scarily so,” according to Larry Dix, owner of Apex Truss in Virginia. Banks, lessors, and manufacturers are flush with money seeking greater returns. • CMs are in better financial shape. Having survived the huge housing recession, they have had seven years to rebuild their balance sheets. • Large investor-owned and publicly traded companies have aggressively invested in labor saving technology, and individual plant owners are compelled to follow suit. • Continuing scarcity of labor. Likewise, equipment manufacturers will bring their best to BCMC because: • Several years of robust sales have funded the addition of talented engineers and technical resources. • Computerized shop floor software has come of age, enabling greater automation. • Optimization algorithms and automation now allow just-in-time cutting and fabrication. • Manufacturers are seeking to automate every factory job.
And, if MiTek’s plans are indicative of the direction of innovation, it is significant that we’ve begun construction of our most advanced truss machinery plant in our 70 year history. Clearly we’re bullish on the future of automation.

Choosing partnerships Every organization chooses to partner with another organization. Whether it is
Sean Hubbard
for branding, complimentary products, or even a dealership license, making the correct choice can be challenging, rewarding, or even catastrophic. From choosing an equipment supplier, lumber supplier, or yet a copy repair man, each partnership provides value in your daily operation. I entered Square 1 Design into a partnership with MangoTech USA with minimal research into the company, the staff, and their reputation. Indeed, I learned a great deal from that relationship. While the Spida Machinery relationship is extremely strong, it developed from the association with MangoTech and has taken years to navigate the details. Due to its speed, the Wall Panel Extruder has been plagued with one question: how do we handle sheathing? So, I embarked on a quest to educate myself on the manufacturers, equipment, and options available in today’s marketplace. Then, I had to determine the organizational needs. I was determined to properly conduct my due diligence. I needed to find an organization with complementary equipment, a solid reputation, checked references, mirrored ethics, and the capacity to meet our needs. Now, my family has been involved in the building components industry since 1965. So, I have a grasp of the who’s who in the industry. I have worked with and continue to work with many of them today. I always tell my kids “past performance is indicative of future behavior.” Of course, that statement immediately led me down the path of elimination. After crossing several manufacturers off the list, I started to visit plants with equipment in action. I spoke to management; I spoke to the buyers and the production staff. I called new and old customers alike. If you listen long enough, you’ll hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. Eventually, I started questioning coworkers, consultants, and other agencies about their relationships with each company. Time after time, call after call, meeting after meeting, I determined there were two companies that have the respect, the reputation, and the ethics that we could develop a mutually beneficial partnership with. They both have competing and complementary equipment, but only one has the production volume and expansive product line required for our 2018 forecast. Working toward the organization’s goals is important, while not competing with their corporate goals and established networks is a balancing act; it is extremely important to the foundation of a relationship. It has allowed trust to grow between competing companies, sharing data and statistics for the betterment of both companies and ultimately the customers and the industry we serve. We are proud to announce our new partnership with… SEE US IN ACTION AT THE BCMC to find out more. PHONE: 800-289-5627

Ron Labbe - Owner & David Weston - COO
Naples Lumber Takes on Irma . . . and Wins
On September 26, The Advertiser’s publisher, Thom McAnally, traveled to Naples Lumber & Supply where we were greeted by David E. Weston, COO. Here’s what we learned about Naples Lumber’s preparedness, commitment, and heart.
Make a Plan and USE It If you’re a longtime resident of south Florida, the question is not if you’re going to see a major storm but when. Naples Lumber owner Ron Labbe has lived here for 39+ years, David Weston for 32 years, so they know what to expect and know the value of a hurricane/natural disaster plan. Formalized several years ago and practiced annually, Naples Lumber’s disaster plan focuses on three areas: pre-season planning, event occurrence, and post-event recovery. The goal is to be prepared, lock down quickly, and act swiftly to recover as soon as safely possible.
Prepare Every Year Preparedness doesn’t start when you hear the weather report—it starts when you decide that you want to protect your business by making smart decisions. From property to infrastructure, Naples Lumber takes actions to stay ready. Two years ago, it invested in a fiber optic internet connection in addition to cable and phone company broad band to make sure communications are available. Every year, it reviews the property conditions—and it had just spent nearly $8000 on trimming landscape and other safety precautions. Importantly, it maintains a large fuel tank on site—this allows them to keep materials flowing and to help employees travel to and from work without waiting for hours in long gas lines.

In fact, they also have an eye on disaster supplies the community will need. While Big Box stores will stock 500 sheets of plywood, Naples Lumber keeps more than 20,000 sheets in stock during hurricane season. This allows them to supply their customers, mostly pro-builders, with what they need to protect their homes and commercial buildings.
Be Patient and Weather the Storm When Hurricane Irma started heading their way, Naples Lumber put its plan into action. To lock down the facility, they make sure that everything inside is off the floor, everything outside that can be blown away is strapped down and bunkered together, and all employees are given plenty of time to go home and prepare themselves. Then they wait. Of course, even with planning, there will be damage. The building that houses hardware and window parts lost its roof and back concrete block wall. Parts of the roof flew into warehouses and lumber T-structures, damaging several in its path.
Lend a Hand Wherever Needed Naples Lumber’s commitment to helping others was put into action too. With all of that plywood in stock, 17,000+ sheets were gone within the first 48 hours. Unlike other pro-dealers, Naples Lumber opens its doors to the public. Even though only about 5% of their normal business is direct to the consumer, this availability meant that local residents had a chance to protect their homes when supplies at Big Box and other locations sold out. The heart of Naples Lumber was on full display too. When a few employees with young children found themselves in flooded homes, they were invited to stay at the business, using offices as temporary living quarters until they could return to their homes. As they worked to reopen the business on Tuesday after the storm, Naples Lumber & Supply bought in a bounty of hot dogs and chips as the vendors brought additional supplies. One supplier in particular, Brian King from US Lumber, packed his van so tightly that he could barely squeeze in next to the water and Gator Aid. Pulling together, the aftermath proved that Naples Lumber, its employees, and its vendors are a family.
Get Back to Business After losing power for 72 hours, the goal was to get back up and running. Although a few inches of water flooded the buildings, the elevated inventory, displays, and furniture sustained no damage. The drywall may show the water line, but the steady hum of dehumidifiers is taking care of the dampness. New roof panels sit in the shell of the hardware building and suppliers are working on repair parts for others. All of the repairs are on track and should be completed in a few weeks. The yard is bustling with trucks and forklifts. The showroom is full of door, window, and hardware samples. Their buyer is busy placing orders. And the extended family that is Naples Lumber will be ready for the next challenge soon—confronting each day with preparedness and heart.

rowing a smaller company’s sales to that of a mid-size company has many challenges. The additional staffing and departmental growth can face unexpected roadblocks. Two key fundamental areas present themselves in unexpected ways. • Communication – Communication is the act of conveying information through any form, such as verbal, written, or any other means. • Delegation – Proper delegation entails empowering others with authority to carry out employee management tasks. Everyone understands that a group of people must be able to effectively communicate all information about a company’s daily activities. But we often do not understand why some of this communication becomes a problem. Some things fail to be conveyed to the proper individuals or departments. The excuses, “I was not told about that” or “No one informed me that it was changed,” become a greater problem as the volume of sales increases. But what about delegation? How does this become a problem as sales volume increases? Here are three examples according to sales volume. Small companies with sales less than $5 million – Small companies normally have a predisposition of being very effective with good communication. Everyone understands who to talk to for resolving issues and who needs to be aware of anything critical. But the needed trait of delegation is normally very poor in practice. The owner or general manager makes all of the decisions for all of the given areas. Very little delegation or empowering of other people within the company to make critical decisions is allowed. The owner/GM feels that he or she must stay on top of everything, and, given the size of the company, this is usually not a problem. Large companies with sales greater than $15 million – Delegation is certainly not an issue for the larger companies. Departments are formed, and managers have defined roles and responsibilities. It is impossible for one person to keep track of every task being completed, so all larger companies must learn to delegate and assign supervisors and managers to make critical decisions within their defined roles. What often does become a problem and must effectively be resolved is communication. Systems of communication are implemented to convey all of the daily activities of the company and handle the critical daily needs of all communication. However, whenever something falls outside of the normal communication needs, very often large companies fail miserably with communication. Mid-size companies with sales of $5 to $15 million – Very often, when companies are transitioning from smaller to midsize, their net profits suffer for years until they learn hard lessons. Too many owners/GMs fail to understand why they are struggling as they grow from a smaller company to a larger one. They feel that they should be healthier because the sales volume is at a rate that should denote stability. Too often, what is common is that they are buying more equipment and increasing staff. All of this investment does not seem to be paying off as they had expected. Why is this? PHONE: 800-289-5627

Here is a simple exercise to perform. What are the defined company optimization standards for designing within your company? Now, go and ask at least three different designers specific optimization standards they should know and adhere. Did they give you the same answers you stated, or did they vary quite a bit? Why is this? If you are having problems, it is because the communication has always been verbal and was never clearly defined within your company. Just to drive this point home, most companies are throwing away tens of thousands of dollars every year because their design team is not properly optimizing the components.
Here is another exercise to try: without asking anyone via phone or email, you have a new work order, and it needs to be processed in the design room. What does the design schedule display for any new work order process time showing you? Do you have to ask someone because there is no shared, displayed design schedule? If they have a schedule, are they guessing, or do they have a reliable means to gauge the design workload? If you have a design schedule, is it displayed so that anyone with proper access rights can easily access it via the internet using a cell phone? Now, how much time and money do you think your company is wasting on poor communications? More than likely, whatever number you can come up with, multiply that by three to come close to understanding the real cost of communication failures. My studies have shown on average most salespeople waste at least one to two hours every day because of poor communication systems. Effective communication is much easier than most people think if you know how to do it right. People are shocked at how easy it can be after I have trained them in how to do this properly. And to answer your question, no, I am not talking about always implementing a software communication fix. Effective communication takes many forms, and most do not cost you a dime, except a little bit of time. Second, delegation within a company may be causing headaches. Many cannot get people to take ownership of problems, and their people will not make decisions, even though they oversee their given departments. Why is this? How effective is management training before putting them in charge? How clearly are job duties and responsibilities defined? How often did upper management step into their area and decide for them after putting them in charge? Just maybe, they were not properly trained, did not have clearly defined responsibilities, or were not allowed to make decisions with properly delegated authority. Here is a dirty secret many are unaware. These same people who are unwilling to make decisions and take responsibility know all about the many problems that are causing the company wasted money. They just feel powerless to fix them either because they do not have the skills or they have yet to be properly empowered with a true delegation of authority.

“Todd, You have a high opinion of the value of your services, and you are not bashful about charging. We have been building trusses since 1962. We believe our people are better than average; our equipment is as good as the best, our yard layout is adequate for our business and over all we questioned whether or not, considering what you charge, it would be worth it. Not wanting to be too myopic we decided to spend some money and listen to you. I will make this note short. It was the best investment I ever made for our truss shop. I no longer think you are
expensive. You covered so much that we will be forever appreciative.” Harold LaValley - Founder and Owner. - Newport, NH Corporate Office

Can staple use be too much of a good thing? W
ith today’s complex profiles and configurations, many truss fabricators have been relying on staples to set assembly member contact and relationships. Stapling serves as a temporary means to insure tight joints and accurate locations. Often times, however, because of the ease of multiple stapling via autonail features on most staple guns, workers utilize an excessively large number of staples. Overuse wastes staples and resources while adding to labor cost. An additional thought some may not have considered – overuse can obstruct proper plate placement. Where staples are used in excess, the area around the staple does not have the same connector holding value based on NDS (National Design Standard) rules for spacing. The crown of the staples can also prevent tooth penetration, preventing the tooth from penetrating the wood member thus providing little load transfer.
If your facility is using staples, consider methods that can be employed to reduce stapling and help insure good plate embedment. For example, the photograph illustrates utilizing a cross nail method. This method is better than parallel stapling. Fewer staples are required to achieve a rigid temporary connection. Triangulation makes any member to member minor gaps more rigid. Glenn Traylor Structural Building Components Industry Consultant http://www.linkedin.com/in/glenntraylor PHONE: 800-289-5627

FLEXIBLE EFFICIENT ACCURATE Truebuild® Layout is an entirely new truss design platform by Eagle Metal, developed in the powerful & proven parametric modeling environment. Design modifications are automatically populated throughout the model for precision accuracy. To maximize designer efficiency, multiple input methods can be used, including conventional UDLR, Reference Dimensions and tracing via DXF, DWG or PDF files.
SOFTWARE SUITE

More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.
FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU
So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. How to Maximize Your Time at BCMC 2017
T
rade shows are a great way to demonstrate products and to meet people face-to-face. They are very useful when you want to see products that require a demonstration or, as my brother Keith would say, “where you want to put your hand on the machine.” But there are even more reasons to attend the BCMC Show in Omaha, NE this year. Most people going to a trade show never really have a strategy other than to see the latest and greatest, maybe compare saws or other equipment. But a strategy to maximize your time? Well that is a different matter. Have you ever sat down and laid out a plan for attending BCMC? We strategize and create marketing plans for our company, so why not do the same for the show? Especially for someone new to the show, all of the educational sessions and exhibitors can be overwhelming. And this year is one of the largest shows we have had in several years! I have talked with numerous component manufacturers this past summer and many are excited about looking at the latest automation equipment including what’s new with robotics. If you are going with a team of associates from your company, consider dividing up your objectives and making plans now.
BCMC Educational Sessions First, take a look at the educational sessions. Most of the sessions are structured in tracks, and each offers valuable information on risk management, trends, design, the economic forecast, and more.
• Divide up the sessions amongst your team so you extract all of the information you can. • Review the session topics and highlight specific things you want your team to learn or ask questions on. • Make sure your team takes notes so they can share what they learn with everyone. • Remember to keep an eye on growing your business—these sessions are not simply educational but should help you look to the future. Sometimes we forget that one of the valuable parts of leaving our operation is to learn from others, and the educational sessions provide a wonderful opportunity for that. PHONE: 800-289-5627

BCMC Exhibits Many companies have already begun to purchase automated equipment to improve efficiency and profitability in their companies. But the fun of BCMC is that there are always new ideas to see and other equipment to evaluate. In addition, there are exhibitors from insurance, lumber companies, material handling equipment, software, and even consulting. Each of the exhibitors is not just there to sell you something or themselves, they are and should be there to improve your business. Having a strategy for walking the show floor, making decisions, etc. is important. You should go with a few things already done.
1. Assess your business reality It is important to understand your company’s objectives. Are you looking to increase productivity? Will this new equipment make you more successful in the marketplace or solve a problem in the field? Will it help you stay ahead of your competitors? Can you upgrade instead of buying new equipment and still get better performance? How can a vendor help improve my bottom line, better purchase material, or lower costs in the operation? Asking these kinds of questions ahead of the show will provide you the basis for a roadmap.
2. Be innovative In today’s competitive business world, being innovative in everything you do is key to success. Innovation is really about responding to change in a creative way; one way to do this is by acquiring equipment or technology that helps you improve your efficiency. Your new equipment or software might help you streamline your operations and create better products and services that appeal to a niche market, for instance, or it might help improve customer service. It’s always a good idea to let your customers know that you’re investing in innovation; it’s a clear message that you have their evolving needs in mind.
3. Look at your business as a whole Rather than making isolated purchases, look at the overall needs of your operations. Short-term purchases without longterm plans are costly and may not yield the best results. An external consultant can conduct a review of operational processes to help you fully understand the way your business works. This review enables the consultant to devise a sound plan that ensures your operations run smoothly and don’t generate waste. Another question worth asking is whether the equipment you are replacing could be used somewhere else within the company. Often, for example, less powerful computers can be reused in departments that do not require high-performance machines. Creating such a plan helps you focus on improving one area of your business at a time, rather than tackling an entire process. Ultimately, you could improve turnaround time, efficiency, or other aspects of your business.
4. Shop around for suppliers The beauty of the BCMC Show is your ability to see the majority of the vendors in our industry on the exhibit floor. You have the chance to see and compare what you might be shopping for and in some cases with multiple suppliers. Evaluate what is best for your company, who is the right fit, and who is going to be there for you long-term. Ask questions of the suppliers and make sure you know what you are really getting.

5. Keep training in mind All too often, owners and managers don’t consider the time, money, and resources required to train employees on new equipment or software. You want to avoid the productivity drop that occurs when employees take too much time to adapt to new technology or processes. If the equipment is new or has new features, you can assume employees will face a learning curve. It’s important to head off problems by ensuring that you have a plan in place to address the resulting downtime. You’ll need to block off time to train employees and still be sure that your operations can run at capacity.
6. Know your financing options Every method of financing has advantages and disadvantages, so carefully evaluate each option. Make sure you talk with your bank and your vendors to understand the options you have. The specifics to be considered vary from one company to another and depend on multiple factors.
7. Think safety first A healthy and safe work environment means your employees and your company can be more productive, and this rule applies to your equipment and technology purchases as well. Your suppliers are responsible for selling you equipment that can be used safely, but you are responsible for ensuring that your employees follow safety rules. You may also want to ensure that office equipment, such as furniture or other equipment or processes, are ergonomically designed to reduce employees’ risk of injury and discomfort while enhancing productivity. Investing in the right equipment, software, or purchasing from a new material supplier can be a complex task. But, heading to Omaha with the right frame of mind will help make your decisions easier. And if we can be of assistance to you, as we have for hundreds of manufacturers, we would enjoy the opportunity and can help you see the big picture and plan your purchases so that your company’s goals are achieved in challenging times.

Take Action to Support Timber Innovation Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC).
It’s that time of year again, when we observe National Forest Products Week during the third week of October. National Forest Products Week began in 1960 with Congress proclaiming “our country and its people have always found constant strength, individual peace, and personal pride in the bounty of forest and timberland; and from the beginning of our Nation’s founding, the forest and its products have provided a core of living and freedom touching and inspiring each citizen with majestic beauty and practical use.” This year, I ask for your help in supporting the Timber Innovation Act. As many of you know, advances in manufacturing, technology, engineering, and safety have made it possible to build taller wood buildings. Advancing the construction of tall wood buildings will help reduce the costs and increase the economic benefits of building construction. And wood building construction directly supports jobs in areas of rural America that have yet to recover from the recession. Over 100 groups, including builders, architects, forest land owners, wood products manufacturers, environmental groups, state forestry associations, and labor unions support the Timber Innovation Act. Please consider supporting the bill by either: • Sending a letter to your members of Congress, made easy for you by going to www.TimberInnovation.org • Adding your company’s name to the list of supporters by emailing IChoiniere@awc.org. Additionally, AWC invites readers to join in the general celebration of wood and other forest products during National Forest Products Week. • Economic Impact: You can find the economic impact the wood products industry has on your state on AWC’s website. Use this information to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or when you speak to legislators about the importance of the industry: http://awc.org/publicpolicy/statefactsheets • Social Media: Join AWC in using #ForestProductsWeek on Twitter from Sunday, Oct. 15 to Saturday, Oct. 21. AWC appreciates the opportunity presented by National Forest Products Week to celebrate our industry and the innovation in construction taking place around the world.

The Pioneer of MSR Lumber By Frank Woeste
The knowledge we take for granted today on MSR lumber is due in large part to the pioneering work of Professor
Robert Hoyle, P.E. In the early 1960s at Potlatch Forest, Inc., he conducted basic research on the relationship between stiffness and strength of lumber, paving the way for the MSR process. Later, he and his colleagues at Washington State University (WSU) conducted the research needed for the acceptance and use of MSR in the U.S.
As a PhD student at Purdue University in the early 1970s, I got to know Bob Hoyle in a couple of ways. Older truss folks will remember Dr. Stan Suddarth, P. E. who introduced me to Hoyle’s fine book, Wood Technology in the Design of Structures, 2nd ed. For the most part, I studied every paragraph in the book. Surprising to me, the book didn’t have an index, so I offered to create one and Professor Hoyle graciously used it in the next edition. As a graduate student, my fondest memory of Professor Hoyle was a trip from Seattle to his home in Lewiston, ID. The purpose of the trip was to help him with Purdue Plan Structures Analyzer, a computerized system for truss analysis based on the “matrix method” now used throughout the truss industry. I suspect he was an awesome professor at WSU as he started his career as a practicing structural engineer and had work experience in the lumber industry. In 1988, Professor Hoyle invited me to co-author the 5th Edition of his book. To this day, it feels good to share his kind and generous ways.
MSR—How It Works In honor of Professor Hoyle, I offer the following discussion of machine stress rated (MSR) lumber that is sorted by machine with a visual grading override as well. One of the earliest tables of allowable design stresses for structural timbers that I am aware of was published in 1922 by National Lumber Manufacturers. The MSR system is relatively new and builds on the body of knowledge of the mechanical properties lumber acquired over a century. The Modulus of Rupture (or Bending Strength) and E data in Figure 1 can be viewed as mill output for a specific size and species (or species group) of lumber prior to sorting and grading. The plot gives pairs of simulated bending strength and E values for 100 pieces of lumber. The lumber strength and stiffness simulation model is based on the full-size lumber test data publicly available in the early 1970s.

Figure 1. Note the large variation in both bending strength and E of the simulated lumber data before grading. The MSR process efficiently reduces the random variation of E in MSR grades.
Conceptual View of the MSR Process To help understand how MSR is sorted and graded, Figure 1 depicts the hypothetical grading of three MSR grades—A, B, and C. A modern grading machine, Metriguard’s 7200 HCLT, is depicted in Figure 2. The machine collects data related to flatwise stiffness at a lengthwise interval of about 1/4-in (0.274 in) as a piece of lumber passes through the machine. Using the data, the machine calculates a minimum E and average E for the piece. Based upon the average of all E-measurements and the minimum-E for the piece, the piece is marked with a code that permits it to become part of the coded grade (A, B, or C in my example) provided it passes visual inspection requirements for the grade. The visual inspection includes characteristics that can’t be accurately detected by the E-measurement process, yet are important to strength and product use (examples: edge knots and wane, respectively). Due to the post-machine visual inspection, some pieces that were stamped with a B-code might be downgraded to the A grade, and likewise, some pieces that were stamped with a C-code might be downgraded to the B grade. The end results of the machine sorting and subsequent visual inspection are grades that have: •
a valuable set of strength design values (Fb, Ft, and Fc),
•
a range of design E values with much less variation, and
•
higher design Fc-perp values for some higher grades. Figure 2. A modern grading machine from the Metriguard Raute Group.
Truss designers may appreciate the fact that long span trusses requiring wider lumber and higher tension design values are well served by MSR lumber. For example, 2x10 SS Southern Pine (SP) has a tabulated tension parallel-to-grain value of 1,100 psi, whereas the same value for 2250f-1.9E SP is 1,750 psi.

Regarding higher design Fc-perp values for mechanically graded lumber, Table 4C Footnotes of the 2015 NDS Supplement gives Fc-perp values based on the published E-value and Specific Gravity (G) for the different grades and species. For example, Southern Pine MSR with an E-value of “1.9 and higher” has a tabulated Fc-perp design value of 805 psi. The higher design values can be useful for longer truss spans that have higher Fc-perp stresses at bearing walls or supports. (A read-only version of the 2015 NDS Supplement is available as a free download from AWC: http://www.awc.org/pdf/codes-standards/publications/ nds/AWC-NDS2015-Supplement-ViewOnly-1411.pdf.) In current practice, there are a variety of machine technologies used to sort MSR lumber into grade categories. These can include acoustic evaluation of E, transverse vibration E, and x-ray analysis of density and variations in density.
Some MSR Benefits One substantial difference between MSR and Visually Graded (VG) lumber is the variability of the Modulus of Elasticity, or “E” values within a specific size and grade. The National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) gives the “coefficient of variation” of E (COVE) for VG and MSR lumber (Table F1 from the 2015 NDS shown here). COVE is a measure of variation about the average E of a population (or grade in this case). For VG lumber it is 0.25, and for MSR it is 0.11.
The COV statistic begs the question—what does it mean? A statistical rule-of-thumb helps answer the question—given a population having a random characteristic (such as E), the range of data will be approximately plus or minus two standard deviations (another statistical term). Using the COV information for VG and MSR lumber, the results follow for an example 1,600,000 psi E-grade of VG and MSR lumber:
Lumber Type
E-average (Million PSI)
VG MSR
1.6 1.6
Range of E-values in Grade (Million psi) 0.80 < E < 2.40 1.25 < E < 1.95
Note that the lowest E-value in the VG grade is 36% less than the lowest E-value in the same MSR E-grade. For example, such differences can impact the performance of joists in-service because a lower E-value automatically yields a greater predicted deflection value.

Practical Considerations MSR lumber is an excellent option for “deflection sensitive” framing components because the predicted range of deflection inservice will be less than the range for the same VG E-grade. For example, consider a header over a large window or double door. Typical design practice for both VG and MSR lumber would involve a deflection calculation based on the tabulated E-value for the grade, for example, 1.6 million psi. The impact of the natural variability of E on deflection behavior is not required by U.S. design standards. For a demonstration, assume a piece of MSR lumber having the lowest possible E-value was selected by “chance” by the contractor and was cut in half to form a two-ply header. The average E for the header would be 1.25 million (by ignoring the impact of a strip of ½” sheathing). The actual header deflection would be more than expected based on the use of the tabulated E value (specifically, 1.6/1.25 more). In comparison, for a VG header and the same assumptions, the actual header deflection would be substantially more than expected based on the use of the tabulated E value (specifically, 1.6/0.8 or two times the design deflection value). As recommended by Professor Hoyle in his 5th ed. textbook, “If maximum deflection is highly critical to a particular design, a 50% reduction in the elastic modulus would ensure that the computed deflection would not be exceeded, with a confidence exceeding 99%.” Applying the same reasoning to MSR lumber, the tabulated E-value would be multiplied by 0.78 before starting the design process. Another benefit of MSR lumber is enhanced structural reliability that stems from the manufacturing process. In addition to machine evaluation and visual inspection of each piece by a lumber grader, lumber samples are tested for each 4-hour portion of a production shift for strength and stiffness by proof-testing. The required physical testing for each production shift provides for on-going adjustments to the grading system that reacts to numerous factors such as differences in the log supply. In short, the MSR production output is subject to an “active” quality evaluation.
The Face of MSR With Professor Hoyle’s contributions to the development of the MSR grading methodology, it is not an overstatement to consider him the face of MSR in the 1960s and 1970s. Others who have worked and written on the topic are indebted to him as well. In fact, in 2012, Professor Don Bender of WSU and I had the privilege of writing about the properties of MSR lumber for an article in Frame Building News, “Effect of Variability on Lumber Design Values.” (visit http://www.nfba.org/view/download.php/ resources/technical/technical-articles/effect-of-variability). Although Bob is no longer with us, his legacy remains. Through the machine sorting of the lumber, the visual grading override, and the daily quality control testing, all users can capitalize on the beneficial strength and stiffness properties of MSR lumber.

Are You Ready for Change? By Keith Parker
T
he pace of today’s business requires agility and change to maintain success. That is the reality of our situation. But be warned: “change” is difficult. Sometimes it requires tinkering, other times it means tearing down the very structures that have taken you to the point of achievement that you have obtained today. This is the first in a series of articles designed to help you pin point your fears, willingness, and ability to make changes that will improve and grow your organization.
Merriam Webster defines “change” as “to take a different position, course, or direction.” Owning a company is tough, relentless, and all consuming. You started it from little or nothing, worked hard, set up systems, survived the recession, and built the organization into a viable entity. But what’s next? The decisions and actions which brought you to where you are today may limit your organization and inhibit further growth. Change for the sake of change is not what I am advocating. Making changes can be difficult and potentially painful. There is a lot to consider, but it is important to assess your situation and be open to change. The economy is better, construction starts are accelerating, and you should ask yourself, especially if your company is located in a growing market: how do you plan to take advantage of the opportunities? Can your current capacity keep up with potential sales? Capacity is much more than the number of employees you have on staff or the pieces of production equipment you possess. An evaluation of your company’s capabilities should include the depth and breadth of the company’s infrastructure, the ability to accurately process estimates, designs, production, shipping, invoicing, and collection for every additional job you take on. If growing your company is not what’s in your forecast, then maximizing profits should be a focal point. Improving your company’s efficiency to maximize profits also will require fine tuning, adjustments, and change. Change is not easy, but it is absolutely necessary to grow, adapt, and increase profits. Change will challenge you, your staff, and the company. But, if you truly believe that doing more of the same is going to take you and your organization to the next level, then you need to dig down deep and rethink. The first step: you must develop the mind-set that you are ready to confront the fear, face the challenges, and support change. Are you ready yet?

As the season approached, more remote options were on the table, but I warned candidates to be careful when leaving a good desk job to venture into the remote world. Too many employers may only be looking for a seasonal fix, which can lead to curtailed hours or remote designer layoffs when the season slows.

Supply and Demand for In-Office Truss Design Candidates At the beginning of this year, the job opportunities JobLine
had were mostly for in-office designers. Some employers were looking ahead to the summer rush and made a few proactive remote designer hires in March, but only a few.
Fast forward to the fall and searches for remote positions have almost completely dried up. I still have a few clients who are receptive when the remote design candidate is a superstar, but they are the exception not the rule. What caught me by surprise, however, is in-office designer searches—they didn’t dry up when expected. Even though the busy season is fading, good jobs remain available. My guess is that employers know hiring someone who will work in the office is not something that can happen on demand. They have to hire when the right candidate is available. As a result, we now have on-going searches for in-office designers at almost every employer location. When the slow season starts, we’ll see if remote designers have the same benefit of retention as their in-office counterparts. In the meantime, opportunities remain for in-office candidates. Next month: Remote design’s glass ceiling

What You Need to Know About Differences in Wind-Speed Reporting for Hurricanes By Darren Conrad, P.E. With Hurricane Irma wrapping up, the cleanup after Hurricane Harvey’s devastation underway in Houston and more big storms already churning in the Atlantic, it seems like a good time to discuss hurricanes and high wind. There is a great deal of good information out there to help us better understand hurricanes and their impact on people, structures and other property. To improve awareness of wind speeds and their measurement, this article will discuss a commonly misunderstood aspect of hurricane wind-speed reporting.
When a storm is approaching, you will hear meteorologists report wind speeds. They often refer to storm categories. These categories attempt to generalize expected damage to structures based on the wind speed of the storm. The wind speed for a given storm is a measure of the severity of the storm and the danger it poses to life and property. But how do meteorologists determine the wind speed that they are reporting? It seems so concrete and certain, but anyone who has been outside during a storm or windy day knows that wind isn’t constant at any one location over a period of time. It varies continuously in magnitude and direction over time. So how can something so variable be the subject of knowledge that is precise enough to be useful? How do we understand wind-speed measurements and make sure that when comparing them we are doing so in such a way that they are comparable? That is a great question.
The good news is that, even though wind is variable, we have a commonly accepted way to measure wind speed and know something about a wind field or event that is occurring at a time and place. This is done by averaging measured wind speeds over specified lengths of time, or picking the highest average wind speed that occurs for a specified averaging interval from a longer period of time. A great resource for understanding how wind speeds are measured and reported can be seen in this WRAL Weathercenter blog post. From this explanation, it can be seen that a reported wind speed is meaningless without a specified averaging time. The shortest averaging intervals will yield the highest reported wind speeds. The longer averaging times will capture more peaks and lulls and yield lower reported wind speeds. The most common averaging intervals used to report wind speeds are three seconds, one minute and two minutes. Some countries even use a ten-minute averaging interval for reporting wind speeds. So the question arises, which average is correct? And the answer is, none of them and all of them. They are just different ways of looking at measured wind data. That is not very comforting, but one thing we can know is that none of them can be truly interpreted or compared without understanding this idea of averaging time. To make it more confusing, meteorologists and building codes do not use the same averaging interval when reporting or specifying wind speeds. This can lead to misunderstandings.

In general, you will hear meteorologists report sustained wind speeds when covering an approaching hurricane. They might also mix in some peak gusts, but for the most part they focus on sustained wind speeds. Sustained wind speeds for tropical cyclones use a 60-second averaging time. Sustained wind speed is also used by the Saffir-Simpson scale to roughly quantify the likely damage that the wind from a storm might cause typical buildings and other structures. There are criticisms of the accuracy of the Saffir-Simpson scale method, but it is widely used by the public to generalize about the severity of tropical cyclones; therefore, it is likely that the public might and commonly does attempt to compare reported sustained wind speeds to building-code-specified three-second-gust wind speeds to determine if their house or structure will withstand the storm. There is danger in making that comparison.
We need to be careful when comparing the reported sustained wind speed for a storm with the threesecond-gust design wind speeds referenced in building codes and design standards. They are not the same and need to be converted before they can be compared for equivalence. After seeing the following example, one could easily see the possibility of the public or a public official comparing the sustained wind speeds reported by the weatherman to the wind speeds used by building codes and design standards and drawing conclusions that may underestimate the force and effect of the storm.
Let’s take a hypothetical situation where a building jurisdiction has adopted a wind speed of 130 mph three-second-gust design wind speed for structures built in that jurisdiction. There are various methods to convert wind speeds between different averaging times, and many factors that may need to be considered when doing that. One method for converting is the Durst method referenced in ASCE 7. Another more recent method recommended by the World Meteorological Organization provides a pretty straightforward conversion between sustained wind speed and three-second-gust wind speeds for near-surface applications. So for the sake of simplicity, we will use it for this example. If we convert a reported sustained wind speed of 130 mph to a three-second-gust average wind speed using this method, it equates to a three-second-gust wind speed for Off-Sea of 160 mph (Off-Sea is appropriate for an approaching hurricane). The adopted130 mph three-second-gust wind speed converts to 105 mph sustained wind speed. This difference could lead individuals in the path of the storm to underestimate its severity if they are not aware of the difference between averaging intervals for wind speeds. They could see the sustained wind speed of 130 mph being reported by the weather service when the storm is over open water and assume that their structure, or structures in their jurisdiction, will stand up fairly well. This would be a serious underestimate, since those structures would need to be designed to resist a 160 mph three-second-gust wind speed using ASCE 7 in order for that to be true. To say that a different way, one might think that their structure was designed for a Category 4 storm (130 mph sustained), when in fact it was actually designed for a Category 2 storm (105 mph sustained) using the Saffir-Simpson scale. Hurricane Irma at its maximum sustained wind speed of 185 mph would equate to a 227 mph three-second-gust wind speed using this conversion method. From a roof anchorage, lateral design and load path design perspective, the difference between 130 mph and 160 mph can be substantial, especially when the building is located on flat open terrain where Exposure C or Exposure D are appropriate assumptions for the design.

There is a lot more background and detail to this very complicated discussion, but the general point is to know your averaging times when comparing reported wind speeds, so as not to underestimate a storm’s force. If a storm is headed your way, hopefully you have already selected the proper hurricane tie for your structure; you have a well-defined and properly designed continuous load path; and you are protecting your exterior openings from windborne debris. Remember, the objective is not to protect the window or door product itself. Unless you are in the insurance business, you are preventing the breach of the opening to keep wind from pressurizing the structure, increasing loads on the structure and potentially causing catastrophic failure.
Know how to secure your structure against high winds, and be safe.

Simpson Strong-Tie Receives David Weekley Homes Nationally Recognized “Partners of Choice” Award for 13th Consecutive Year Pleasanton, Calif. – Simpson Strong-Tie, the leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, has earned the highest award – an “A” ranking for both quality and service – for the 7th consecutive year from David Weekley Homes, the nation’s largest privately held home builder. Simpson Strong-Tie is one of only two companies to receive the prestigious Partners of Choice award – denoting “A” ranking in either quality or service, or both – for all 13 years since the program began.
The Partners of Choice award is part of the David Weekley Homes Supplier Evaluation Platform, a rigorous quarterly review of 200 national trading partners. Approximately 1,000 national team members at all levels within the company participate in the review. Their feedback provides partners an opportunity to evaluate and improve their channel alignment and performance. Survey feedback is offered to suppliers and conducted through a series of individual and group discussions, mentoring calls and strategy sessions to ensure ongoing improvement. The award program honors the suppliers who earn an “A” in quality, service or both within a 12-month period.
“It’s just not enough to manufacture a great product anymore,” said Bill Justus, Vice President of Supply Chain Services for David Weekley Homes. “Our suppliers have to be aware of the entire ‘purchase to installation’ process, which means timely and accurate product delivery, providing product training, and identifying any problems within the supply chain. Suppliers’ ability to do this well ensures we can build homes more efficiently for our home buyers.”
Every supply chain partner is evaluated and measured by the same standards, regardless of their industry or product. At the heart of the evaluation process is the “National Trading Partner Survey,” a web-based, interactive feedback platform that tracks employee responses to measure how effectively partners are managing the supply chain. Respondents are asked to rank how each supplier executes in several key areas. The suppliers are given detailed survey results so they can gauge their areas of strength and areas for improvement throughout the year.
“Simpson Strong-Tie is thrilled to receive the ‘Partners of Choice’ award,” says Roger Dankel, President of North American Sales for Simpson Strong-Tie. “To be recognized by a valued partner for quality and service is the highest honor. Providing consistent, reliable customer service and value to our partners is our number one mission. Excellent customer service is what our company was founded on, and we diligently work to achieve that level of quality service with our customers.” PHONE: 800-289-5627

The Last Word...
on Fitness
Only one part of our being can be fairly gauged: our physical heath. Our other parts—the mental, emotional, or spiritual aspects don’t register on any objective scale. But if we get a handle on that one part, we do gain insight on the others. We can gain this data via our doctor’s assessment of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc. Or, we can do it ourselves, an arguably better way, and supplement our doctor’s results.
Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com
However valuable, a patient’s self-assessment has traditionally been the least reliable health resource. New technology has changed that. Smart watches accurately measure walking, running, and even swim lap distances, and can automatically upload results to your computer. Apple’s watch, for example, measures heart rate activity, and is expected to pinpoint certain heart abnormalities in the future. But there is an even simpler method—sign up for a local bike, walk, or run event. Don’t worry about recording the results yourself—www.Athlinks.com automatically keeps track of most organized events. All you have to do is claim your results, like I do, to see a summary of all your events (see mine here). Then, the fun part begins, challenging oneself to keep bettering your results.
To get started, sign up for either the BCMC Bike Ride (Tuesday) or Walk/Run (Thursday) at www.bcmcshow.com. The annual results of these and other events provide a good indication of your progress over many years (30 years’ worth in my case). Consequently, the results of periodic exams by your doctor are seldom surprising. Now “Just Do It.”
