s we bid farewell to last year and welcome the new year, I always like to reflect on accomplishments (and try to learn from mistakes) before heading back into the daily grind.

Events of 2017 While a lot of us led fairly routine lives last year, I know a few people who did exciting things like getting married and buying a new home. If you’re in that category (like a certain someone here at The Advertiser), we hope those milestones are the start of many years of new joys in life. There are also our friends who faced adversity, from hurricanes to other challenges. If you were forced to confront those hurdles, natural or man-made, we hope you’re well on your way to recovery and renewed prosperity now. And, if you’re in the category with me where daily routines are firmly entrenched, we hope you find enjoyment in those too.

Accomplishments of 2017 Hopefully, we all have a few things which we can label successes. I am very pleased to say that The Advertiser reached a few milestones of its own. In July, we hit our first 100-page issue. In fact, we reached or exceeded 100 pages 3 times, taking our average page count last year to 93 pages. To fill those pages, we averaged 19 advertisers and 13 articles per issue. And our distribution continues to grow, taking us to 5,000 subscribers.

W

ith the New Year comes new International codes, IBC and IRC 2018 (referred to as the I-Codes), and fortunately, few changes to truss designs. These changes are the result of the revised design criteria contained in ASCE 7–16, which IBC 2018 relies upon.

Very few jurisdictions will adopt the new I-Codes early in 2018; most will remain under IBC/IRC 2015 and TPI 2014 until much later. And some select projects may be “grandfathered” and still allow use of IBC/IRC 2012 and TPI 2007. Be aware that there are more significant truss design changes when upgrading from the 2012 International Codes, since designs must comply with TPI 2014, which up-sizes plates at several joint types. Whenever there are relevant changes in any of the four major code bodies, truss design will most likely be affected: 1. ASCE 7 codes specify the magnitude and application of loads – wind, snow, earthquake, etc. – prescribed by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The 2016 revision, ASCE 7–2016, has again modified the snow and wind maps from the 2010 Code, and permits interpolation between zones. However, local building departments normally establish minimum snow and wind loads for their jurisdictions which take precedence, and may be higher than those found in ASCE 7. Revised codes have been published in 2002, 2005, 2010, and 2016.

2. ANSI TPI codes specify design methods for truss members and joints, and have increasingly refined (and complicated) the methodology. Changing from the 2012 to the 2015 or 2018 I-Codes necessitates changing from the 2007 to the 2014 TPI, and involves significant plating enhancements. However, changing from 2015 to the 2018 IBC/IRC requires no change in TPI, since TPI 2014 is still in effect. Previous revisions were 2002 and 2007.

3. NDS, the National Design Specification for Wood Construction, specifies the design properties and methods pertinent to wood. There are no significant changes in allowable lumber stresses since Southern Pine was (significantly) downgraded in June 2013. NDS was revised in 2001, 2005, 2012, 2015, and will be in 2018.

4. IBC, the International Building Code, relies on the above 3 design standards for truss design requirements, and is mainly concerned with the design of the overall structure. However, it can significantly impact truss usage, as it did in 2015, by requiring a ceiling to be installed with floor trusses but not with solid joists. I-Codes are revised every three years.

To be competitive requires knowing loading requirements of each jurisdiction served, and their planned adoption of new codes. Every truss job has a specific destination, and, fortunately, design schemes for each jurisdiction can be set up in truss design software. Our industry associations, SBCA and TPI, are both in the forefront of the code change process, minimizing the impact on component manufacturers, and keeping us up-to-date on pending changes. Soon they will begin advocating and assessing changes submitted for the 2021 I-Codes. Happy New Year!

What Building Professionals Need to Know About Construction Loading By Shawn Overholtzer Understanding construction loading is important as it relates to the acceptable practices in terms of staging and storing construction materials prior to installation. What does “construction loading” mean? This term describes materials and people that are present during the course of construction. It refers to any construction material that is stacked and/or staged on the trusses for any length of time prior to the installation of said materials. This also includes those individuals that are working or walking on the trusses during the course of construction. One of the most important concepts to understand is that before any construction materials can be loaded on roof or floor trusses, the trusses must be adequately restrained and braced. This must be done in accordance with BCSI-B1 and BCSI-B2. Loading material on trusses prior to adequate restraint and bracing can lead to failure, collapses, injury and even death. This is especially important when structural elements such as roof or floor trusses are involved. The Truss Plate Institute, along with the Structural Building Component Association, provides guidelines (BCSI-B4) for the amount of material that can be stacked on a roof or floor along with the proper placement and orientation of this material, and the length of time the material can be staged. Additional guidelines include the following: 

Do not position material so that it creates excessive load over a single truss or small group of trusses, but rather, place the material so that the load can be distributed over multiple trusses

Material should be placed perpendicular to the trusses.

Furthermore, it is optimal to position the material along interior or exterior supports or bearings.

It is imperative not to overload trusses, because this can have long-term effects on their structural performance. Even after the loads from building materials have been removed, the deflection or sagging in the roof or ceiling often remains. As a component manufacturer, you have probably heard or read all of this information before. It’s important that component manufacturers are educated in the best practices and guidelines defined within the BCSI. However, it cannot end there. These guidelines have little value if they are not correctly implemented on the jobsite. How can you, as the component manufacturer, help promote jobsite safety and ensure that trusses retain their structural integrity? First, it’s vital that you send BCSI summary sheets with your jobsite packages. Second, use this as an opportunity to educate your customer, contractors, and sub-contractors. Third, ensure that your staff is familiar with current information and facilitates preconstruction meetings with your customers. A little upfront work can save a lot of headache and cost throughout the construction process. Simpson Strong-Tie is committed to offering sound structural solutions and providing education to help people design and build safer, stronger structures. Change Your Pricing Formula for 2018 and Make More Net Profit

L

et us assume that you are having problems with a truck’s transmission and it must be repaired or replaced. The local mechanic explains the hourly rate for service and that the cost of any parts needed to fix the transmission is extra. The hourly charge he is billing is to cover his operating expenses and create a net profit. Note that the cost of the parts he is replacing has no bearing on the hourly rate. The cost of the parts is an add-on expense one is charged on top of the established hourly rate. Now, what does this have to do with roof truss or wall component sales? The answer is a lot more than most may have considered in the past. If your company was not selling manufactured components, how would you maximize the gross profit for your manufacturing facility? It is quite simple. You would rent or lease your facility at the maximum dollar rate per time period. It would be a natural idea to lease at the maximum dollar rate the market would allow, whether on a monthly, weekly, daily, or even per-hour basis. What a tenant is using the facility for and the cost of materials he or she is using to manufacture his or her products are irrelevant to you. You want the most you can get based on market conditions for the agreed time the lessee uses the facility. Now, when you sell a component project to your customers, how is this so different from leasing your manufacturing facility? When you manufacture a customer’s project, it is using your facility’s hourly and daily time periods.

Most component manufacturers establish the selling price based on the cost of the material plus the labor cost and then use some multiplier for establishing the total sales price. The material costs of lumber and truss plates are like new auto parts for a truck. What does that mean? As stated before, mechanics first establish how long it will take to make the repairs, and then they add the cost of the new parts to the bill. They do not use the cost of the parts, plus the cost of labor, and then mark it up. The cost of the parts has nothing to do with how much of the hourly garage time the repair will consume. The cost of parts is always a separate line item from the hourly charge. Now we can see how this applies to selling components. Using the material cost to establish the margin rate skews the hourly rate up and down depending on the cost of material. By using the cost of material in a pricing formula as a cost markup, a company is charging less per hour for a facility’s hourly rate when the material market cost drops. By using a cost markup, any time the lumber cost drops, you are giving yourself an hourly pay cut for your company. Now, what can you do to provide a consistent baseline to establish your gross margin markup for each project? Continued next page

Drummond’s pricing method for proper margin rate based on time. Material + Labor Cost + (Dollar Rate * Expected Hours) = Sales Price The results of using this pricing formula will yield higher margin dollars per-hour projects than prior sales. The reason for this is that you will be able to view the gross-margin dollar rate per estimated hour and recognize the high and low margin dollar-per-hour projects at a glance. You will have a much better understanding of which orders are worth the effort and which ones you will pass on to your competition. You will know at a glance how much you will truly be earning on an hourly basis, so, in essence, you are giving your company an hourly raise to do business. All of this will lead to greater net profit at the end of the new year. So, if you doubt the accuracy of this approach, consider the following from one of our clients. Keith Kylmala, owner of Kylmala Truss in Saginaw, MN, has this to say about TDC’s advice. “We are an Alpine customer, and all I can say is Todd’s time standards are scary accurate! Once we set up the labor configuration file based on our equipment and practices, our truss software estimates the labor time and cost in a spectacularly accurate way. We love how many options there are to choose from with Todd’s time standards labor document. No more educated guessing for our costing and pricing.” When your company is ready to start using proven truss labor estimations based on industrial engineering practices so that you can use this proven better pricing method, give TDC a call. No one is better at helping companies improve all departments within the wood component industry. When it comes to operational improvements, TDC is the one to call. Seeing the Need for Quality Assurance AND Training

W

hen you look at this photo, what do you see? The photo is an actual picture taken during a plant audit, but just imagine this was taken at your truss plant. In the photo, the second side of the floor truss is set up in the floor machine with the connector plate positioned and ready to receive its second press. The sketch illustrates an end view of the floor truss in the machine. If you see a poorly manufactured product, you are correct . . . but just marginally. What you should see are major failures in the plant’s quality assurance program and across the entire organization. This might seem a little hard on the truss builders, but a careful analysis of this truss plant’s operation needs to be conducted. Having this type of product in your assembly process indicates numerous failures or gaps that need to be identified and corrected. What are these problems? 1. Obviously, the truss builder at this station needs to understand that wane impacts quality. When a truss is in the process of being built and the operator doesn’t understand the impact of this example, there is very clear evidence the builder has absolutely no comprehension of this fundamental consideration. I think we can all agree—additional training for this builder is in order. 2. Would the opposite side, the builder on the starting side of the floor truss machine, have any responsibility? There might be some argument, however, clearly these builders need to assess lumber quality, lumber grade, and suitability prior to loading the machine with chords. The start side in this example failed to qualify the lumber they were getting ready to use. An opportunity for additional training at the very least. 3. How did the lumber get to the floor machine as material was being staged? A lumber stager needed to handle the lumber, placing it on the cart, or maybe the lumber catcher skips a step and directly places the lumber cart brought to the table. In any case, either one or two people had an opportunity to catch this sort of defect prior to it being staged at the table. Small amounts of wane are easy to miss, but it would be reasonable to assume that extensive wane would be seen with a cursory inspection of the lumber by the catcher/loader. Training, with emphasis on what to look for, would be in order. 4. Does the sawyer hold any responsibility? Absolutely. The sawyer should be culling extreme lumber before it’s cut. If he or she does this, better utilization of materials can take place before the lumber is cut and committed. Definitely more training is required for the sawyer. Often times, linear saws have eliminated the skilled sawyer requirements needed for component saws, but be assured, skill is still a requirement, especially when it comes to qualifying lumber. In this example, additional training is necessary so the sawyer knows their Glenn Traylor responsibilities. 5. How about the lumber picker? Absolutely. Their job is not to simply fetch lumber. The picker has the responsibility to “pick” the appropriate lumber for the task at hand. They need enough information to be able to understand how the lumber is going to be used. Simply giving a picker a list of lumber with grade, size, and length, without clear understanding on its subsequent use, is an accident waiting to happen. This could illustrate poor procedures, lack of training, or a combination of both. Obviously more training is in order. 6. Did we leave out anyone? Maybe. Let’s assume the second side floor truss builder was new or lacking experience. A supervisor should be reviewing and watching the process anytime a new employee is being trained and places in a worker in a new circumstance. Using the same train of thought, this would also apply to the Picker, Catcher, Sawyer, and Staging. As discussed, this horrible example shown here is not just one person who’s not equipped to do the job. It’s a total breakdown in critical components, training, and understanding from start to finish. Had this problem not been captured during a quality control audit, the probability of this truss being installed in the field was very high. And, by the way, the wane existed to a lesser degree along the entire length of the top chord. Can you say UGLY!

More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.

FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU

So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. Continuous Improvement Culture

W

Ben Hershey, CEO & Coach 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC

hile speaking at a recent conference, I was asked a really good question from one of the executives of a Component/LBM company. His question prompted me to think about how I would start 2018 off in my articles.

The question was: “Our company does not have an incentive program in place though we arbitrarily reward performance at the end of the year. We are positioned as one of the top two suppliers in our market, and we are profitable though it could be better. But listening to you makes me consider, how do I motivate my team without too much reshuffling of what we have to date?” I have two answers for you: 1. Have you looked in the mirror lately and asked yourself if your expectations are high enough? 2. TIME TO SHUFFLE THE DECK! The way the question was worded to me tells a lot—there is already an awareness that this type of thinking, behavior, and performance was not acceptable to the owner. Phrasing such as “we could be better” or “we have opportunity” are indications that improvements can be made.

Continuous Improvement (CI) You cannot start a project, buy a new automated saw or new auto-setup gantry, and think that your need to continue to improve stops at the purchase. As a business, we are always looking to improve on the service, or bids, or software we use—but when it comes to our component operations or lumber yards, complacency sets in. Continuous improvement is a career-long commitment to improve one day at a time forever. If we say “we’re No. 1” and let that mindset become pervasive throughout the lumber yard and component plant, then we’ll see trouble on the horizon. We should always be looking at ways to improve at a rate that is faster than our best competitor, or the “industry average.” It may take your competition some time to catch up to you and exceed your “No. 1” status, but a committed team that is thinking and behaving the right way, making constant improvements, creating new services or products, will ultimately allow you to stay at the top of your market. This is part of the message I say to owners all the time, but many times is picked up more quickly at the floor/yard level. You do not need to reinvent the wheel (others in our industry have already done that); you need to change the culture of your team. Coaching them on the importance of each associate in the business taking initiative to apply lean thinking every day—that will lead you and your team to long-term success.

CI by Walking/Observing Now that we have our thinking/heads in the right place, let’s start reshuffling the deck. We have spent several months talking about the wastes identified in the TIMWOODS acronym. Last month, we even talked about implementing a plan to get rid of the wastes. But, too many times I will come into an operation and hear: “we read about that and I assigned it to my team,” but there was no follow-up. As owners and managers, we get caught up in the day to day and do not spend time, literally time, on the floor, in the design department, or out in the yard, looking at how our team is processing material or an order. We cannot just make a quick walk with the real intent of getting back into our four walls with a door and resuming what we were doing. Continued next page PHONE: 800-289-5627

Don’t Forget! You Saw it in the

January 2018 #10222 Page #47

Schedule time each day to do a Gemba walk, where you are interacting and observing a specific area of the operation. Spend several minutes (10–15) watching a process or work cell to see what is occurring. Take notes, make a recording, do what you need to identify how “X” is being processed. Then share those notes or recordings with the team in that cell, and ask how we can improve upon what we are doing today. Gather the ideas, see if you can devise a solution(s), and then develop and implement a CI plan using the tools Lean provides. Then, go back to see how it is working! Are you getting the improved results you expected? Is there actual improvement in the metrics?

Make Some Bold Moves A common waste I see in component plants, millwork operations, and lumber dealers is the downfall of Material. Material waste can be an uncontrollable area to some, or an opportunity to others. Reducing scrap can be a great opportunity to improve costs. Because we process lumber in a number of ways and try to reuse what we can, we do not always track the actual cost of that waste. So as a manager/owner looking at my P&L every month, I may not see the actual shrink in inventory or cost because it is somewhat hidden. Or, we downfall material and do not get it back into a position fast so it can be reprocessed. How many companies have carts, yes carts, or pallets of downfall sitting all over the plant and yard right now that never seems to get back to the saw for processing? Too many. What if you told your team you wanted to reduce waste by 50% in the next year; what kind of reaction would you get? You might finally be on the right track to finding out how the waste is produced and why it is not getting back into the system for processing into fire blocks, vent blocks, floor truss verticals, wedges, etc. This bold objective could force your supervision team to think differently about this enormous waste they are walking past every day. They could no longer pick around the edges looking for incremental improvements and expect to meet this bold objective. They would have to do a “deep dive” to find root causes and improve processes. It gets rid of the mindset of “we have always done it this way” and forces us to use a better process of attacking scrap. Why stop here? What about WIP, finished goods, etc.? You may only be able to work on a few initiatives at a time, but each move will save you money, and change the culture of your team to a continuous improvement environment.

Set the Expectation As the Owner/Executive/GM, you must set high expectations and then follow up. Otherwise, you cannot think there will be lasting improvement. There is always room to improve, and the discussion above is simply one example. I’ve never been in a plant where there were zero process failures and no material to be reworked or rerun, etc. When we communicate the expectations, and show the same in action every day, then we help to set the mindset of a CI organization. We need to focus our improvement efforts based on the biggest opportunities, and make sure our managers are keeping score, communicating on a common board so everyone will know if we’re winning or losing. The other change you will see is your leadership team will have established a different way of thinking, a different way of behaving, a different way of using the tools to focus on the most important things first. You will have a different way of communicating with your associates on improving their processes, helping to eliminate all the reasons why the sawyers and forklift operators or framers and assemblers have a bad day, and you will establish a new level of trust and respect across the operation. This is part of the work I enjoy most with our industry, helping to create that new culture while sharing ideas to grow and increase profits.

If you can start this, and sustain it in 2018, then you will create the culture of winning and being the best. And your competitor, well, they will never get close enough to see your tail lights ahead of them. Continued next page

Best Practice Tip I always coach managers and supervisors to have a huddle at the beginning of a shift. This came to life for me a different way recently. A manager at the hotel where I was staying asked what I did, and I shared how I work with companies to improve efficiency, improve the bottom line, and help grow their business. She wanted a simple way to implement this with her staff. I walked her through how to conduct the huddle at the beginning of the shift, to share expectations, share highlights of best p e r f o r m a n c e , o ff e r a safety tip, and discuss a problem and how they could improve. This photo is of their first meeting as a team. Now four weeks later, she has let me know that they have seen improvements in their ratings on surveys, improvement in morale, and improvement in overall team performance. If you are not doing this today, start tomorrow; and if you need help, give me a call, I would enjoy the opportunity to assist you. TERMINAILER Don’t just do it, nail it.

It’s a brand new day in wall-panel production, with a whole new way of doing things better. Terminailer®, a revolutionary, event-driven, nailing machine that completely defies any preconceived notions about sub-component assembly. Terminailer all but shatters the stereotypical myth that subcomponent equipment is essentially peripheral – unimportant. And it does so by quickly and accurately driving far more framing nails in your wall panel jobs than ever before. Whether in your shop or in the field, one operator sets the pace for production and quality. And that reduces labor costs and other aspects of overhead. Terminailer is an event-driven, sub-component assembler that will quickly and accurately drive 30% to 70% of the framing nails in any wall panel job. In your shop or in the field, one operator sets the pace for production and quality. The Terminailer functions independent of design software, requires zero set-up time when switching between any configuration, and requires no special operator training. With nearly ten years of development from people that know machinery it is assembled to exacting standards, well supported, and it is easily maintained with shelf-item parts. Terminailer: vetted, tested, and ready to drive maximum productivity for you. Be sure to check out our videos below for a quick review of this revolutionary machine!

2018 Wood Design Standards Available Online Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC).

T

he recent approval of the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) is of keen interest to professionals in the construction industry as it often means expanded options for structural applications. In support of these two codes, the American Wood Council has developed two standards: the 2018 National Design Specification® (NDS®) for Wood Construction and 2018 Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM). Each has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as American National Standards and both are referenced for wood design in the new IBC and IRC. The 2018 NDS is key to designers of wood buildings and those responsible for oversight and code enforcement, and defines the methods to be followed in structural design with traditional and engineered wood products, as well as the design and fabrication of single and multiple fastener connections. Primary changes in the 2018 NDS include: • Adjustments to fire design provisions for exposed wood members and connections to aid in new applications where fire resistance ratings are required; • Added design provisions for fastener head pull-through in lumber and wood structural panels; • New design provisions for ring shank nails to address increased roof uplift loads in ASCE 7-16; • Added design provisions for stainless steel nail withdrawal; and, • Revised provisions for incised lumber.

The 2018 WFCM equips designers and code officials with engineered and prescriptive construction methods that result in more resilient wood buildings that are better able to withstand forces associated with extreme natural disasters. Primary changes in the 2018 WFCM include: • Clarification of terminology, and minimum construction details and limits of rake overhangs based on increased wind pressures; • Revision of the “Roof Sheathing Attachment Requirements for Wind Loads” table to give common, box, and RSRS nail size and sheathing options by including requirements for uplift load per nail and fastener uplift capacity; • Addition of roof rafter uplift tables to provide design wind pressure and maximum spans for roof rafters in accordance with ASCE 7-16 wind pressures; • Updated design load standard reference from ASCE 7-10 to ASCE 7-16 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures; • Revisions to coordinate with ASCE 7-16’s increased roof wind uplift pressures and addition of lower wind speed categories (i.e. 90, 95, 100, and 105 mph); and • Incorporation of fastener criteria from the 2018 NDS to include provisions for roof sheathing ring shank (RSRS) nails and fastener head pull through design procedures. To make this code-referenced standard the most user-friendly it can be, AWC will now be developing supporting publications such as an NDS Commentary, revising technical reports and design aids to be consistent with this new edition, and conducting further research to ensure continued widespread acceptance of wood in construction. Understanding all of the latest changes and what is allowed in various jurisdictions can also be a daunting prospect. In order to understand what the latest building code and standards updates mean for the specification of traditional and engineered wood products in buildings, AWC has several free webinars scheduled or available on-demand to provide an overview of changes to the 2018 AWC standards and 2018 building codes. Both publications are currently available in a read-only electronic format on the AWC website, at www. awc.org/codes-standards/publications. A print version of each standard is expected to become available in early 2018.

Wood Frame Construction Manual—a Valuable Structural Design Guide By Frank Woeste and Buddy Showalter

W

hile the International Residential Code (IRC) gives the structural requirements and prescriptive design data for residential framing, additional help for the non-engineer is available through the Wood Frame Construction Manual for One- and Two-Family Dwellings (WFCM) published by the American Wood Council (AWC). The WFCM offers a pathway to accomplishing a code-conforming framing design for everyone from a layman to the most experienced residential designer, engineer, or architect. Building code officials will also find the document valuable for plan review. The WFCM includes design and construction provisions for connections, wall systems, floor systems, and roof systems. A range of structural elements are covered, including sawn lumber, structural glued laminated timber, wood structural sheathing, I-joists, and trusses.

Figure 1. AWC’s Colonial Homes Idea House in Williamsburg, VA, designed by nationally acclaimed architect William E. Poole, was used in the 2014 Virginia Tech WFCM course.

Demonstrating its functionality as a design resource, in 2014, Virginia Tech offered a two-day program on how to use the WFCM to design the framing system of the two-story home depicted in Figure 1. Using the manual, the instructors led the participants through the design process assuming all of the load conditions contained within the IRC. Covering an intense two days (which some participants suggested should have been at least three days), the 91-page workbook for the course can still be downloaded and printed from: http://www.awc.org/pdf/codes-standards/publications/wfcm/AWC-WFCM2015-Workbook-160901.pdf Continued next page

How to Get Started with the WFCM The objective of this article is to introduce the reader to the scope of WFCM and provide guidance for starting to use the manual on a limited basis (such as the design of a single girder or header). Step 1 is to be aware of the scope and limitations of the manual, and the applicability of the manual for your jurisdiction. Step 2 is to select the section and table that applies to your specific problem and carefully ensure the design assumptions and results tabulated align precisely with your situation.

It is important to understand that each edition of the WFCM will be recognized by the respective building code governing your jurisdiction. The 2018 WFCM has been recognized by the 2018 IBC and IRC, so it will eventually be the version that governs your locality. At this time, however, the 2015 WFCM is the version that is in effect (or pending) in the majority of jurisdictions. Therefore, this article will focus on the 2015 WFCM.

Step 1: 2015 WFCM Scope and Limitations Developed by AWC, the 2015 WFCM is referenced directly in the 2015 International Building Code and 2015 IRC. • Under the 2015 IRC (R301.1.1 Alternative provisions), the 2015 WFCM is “… permitted subject to the limitations of this code and the limitations therein.” The practical significance of IRC R301.1.1 is that it provides a basis for the Building Official to accept designs based on the WFCM, provided the subject design falls within the limitations of the IRC and WFCM. Visit http://www. awc.org/pdf/codes-standards/publications/wfcm/AWC-WFCM2015-ViewOnly-1510.pdf for a free “view only” copy of the manual.

WFCM Scope “Engineered” and “prescriptive” design provisions in WFCM Chapters 2 and 3, respectively, are based on the following loads from ASCE 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures: • 0-70 psf ground snow loads • 110-195 mph (700-year return period 3-second gust basic wind speeds) • Seismic Design Categories A-D If you’re not sure about the design loading requirements per the applicable code for your location, the local Building Code Official should be consulted for this information.

WFCM Limitations The applicability limitations of the WFCM are given in the top section of Table 1 (p. 2). The building dimensions are limited to: 1. Mean Roof Height, 33 ft. 2. Number of Stories, 3 3. Building Length and Width, 80 ft.

In the lower section of the WFCM Table 1, the load types and ranges of gravity load levels and wind speeds, and seismic categories covered by the manual, are tabulated:

Further, within each chapter of the WFCM, an additional “limitations” table is provided. Table 3 (p.114), for example, provides additional “prescriptive design limitations” that help the designer or code official determine whether their particular situation can be solved by the prescriptive limits, or might require an engineered solution per Chapter 2. An example of a limit to Chapter 3 prescriptive provisions is a 10’ loadbearing wall height. Tables in WFCM Chapter 3 only allow for 10’ loadbearing walls similar to prescriptive IRC provisions. However, Chapter 2 would allow an engineered solution up to 20’ for loadbearing walls.

Step 2: Tips to Solve your Design Problem After establishing that your design problem fits within the scope and limitations of the WFCM, the next step is to align your specific design problem with the applicable table. For demonstration purposes, the following is a simple wood-framing design example. Floor Girder Design Requirements • One floor only, center bearing • Building width, 30-2 (ft-ins) • 16-ft. solid-sawn joists bearing on top of girder • Girder span 8-ft • Floor Live Load, 40 psf, L/360 live load deflection • Dead load, 10 psf (wood sheathing subfloor, carpet or wood flooring)

Ensure Design Requirements and Table Assumptions Align The WFCM contains two tables (pp. 276–277) that apply to “one floor only” and 50 psf total load, but only Table 3.24A2 on p. 277 matches the lateral support condition stated above: Joists connected to top of girder. The table caption refers to a “Laterally Supported (Raised) Header…” and the required load and deflection criteria, thus Table 3.24A2 applies to the example problem. Continued next page

An excerpt from Table 3.24A2 and footnotes follow:

Footnotes to Table 3.24A2:

Entering Table with the Required Data Use of the tables will generally require interpolation between the tabulated values. This process is tricky and a formula may help. For example, for the problem at hand, the Building Width is 30-2. Assuming a 3-2x12 (No.2 Southern Pine) girder may be adequate, the following formula using ft-in format can be used to obtain the allowable girder span for a 30-2 Building Width. Span for 3-2x12 girder = 9-6 - (9-6 minus7-9) x (30-2 minus 24-0)/(36-0 minus 24-0) Converting to inches

= 9-6 - (1-9) x (6-2)/(12-0) = 114” – 21” x 74”/144” = 103.2” or 8-7

Being that the maximum calculated girder span is 8-7 and thus greater than 8-0, a 3-ply 2x12 Southern Pine girder is adequate when the joists are toe-nailed to a nail-laminated girder. (Toe-nailing of joists to the girder provides required lateral support for the girder.)

Importance of Table Footnotes “Look up” design tables are valid when all conditions stated in the caption and table footnotes are satisfied or met. For example, in the example girder selection, we assumed No.2 Southern Pine. According to Footnote 1: • “Tabulated spans are based on the lowest Fb, Fv, and E for #2 Grade Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, Southern Pine, and Spruce-Pine-Fir. For #3 Grade lumber, spans shall be multiplied by 0.75.”

Specie groups other than the four listed may not be adequate for the tabulated spans. Having determined that a 3-2x12 Southern Pine girder is adequate for the example 30-2 Building Width, is it also adequate for the case wherein the two 16-ft joists would be replaced by 30-2 engineered wood product (EWP) continuous span joists or floor trusses? This question can be answered by invoking footnote 3 of Table 3.24A2: • Tabulated spans assume headers supporting single span floor joists. For headers supporting continuous two span floor joists, tabulated spans shall be multiplied by 0.89 Multiplying the allowable girder span by 0.89 yields an allowable span of 92”, or 7-8, less than the required span of 8-0. The calculated girder span must be reduced by the factor of 0.89 because the use of a two-span continuous 30-2 EWP joist or truss puts 25% more load on the girder than for the two single-span joist case. The joist design advantage of using a two-span continuous joist or truss is the fact that a lower stiffness value is required for satisfying the Span/360 live load deflection limit. This example points to the need for framing designers to be specific in their design results as it is likely that changes may be made in the construction process (such as two single-span solid-sawn joists being replaced by one continuous span 30-2 EWP or floor truss).

Learning by Practice The WFCM is a fabulous residential framing design resource. To make the best use of the manual, we recommend continuing education on using the manual, either on-line or in-person. Recorded online education, complete with continuing education credits, is available on the 2015 WFCM at: http://www.awc.org/education/wfcm-2015. AWC has several free webinars scheduled or available on-demand to provide an overview of changes to the 2018 AWC standards and 2018 building codes. In addition, while not the focus of our next Virginia Tech short course, “Structural Design Topics in Wood Construction,” http://www.cpe.vt.edu/sdtwc/index.html, we will provide and use the WFCM in four of the twelve subjects to be covered. So You and Your Company are Ready for Change? By Keith Parker Structural Building Components Industry Professional

Y

ou have reached consensus and each staff member understands your vision and that change will bring benefits. Key management has committed to the changes required to move forward. You have sought and obtained “buy-in” from the members of your company and clearly defined (WIIFT) what’s in it for them to make and drive change. So, what are the next steps to accomplish the new goal(s)?

You are at point “A” of your journey, the “critical path” forward needs to be defined and structured. Point “A” is the first step to achieving your goals. It’s a time to collaborate, identify, organize, and frame out each intermediate step of the path. It’s a chance to document the goal(s) and define the sequence to achieve the end goal(s). Who will lead and who will participate at each step? What are the resources required? What is the time frame targeted to accomplish each intermediate step and sub-goal, and what tools or format will you seek and implement to support this process? On the way to developing a critical path, you will address and solve many challenges. One can chase down surface indicators or target root cause problems. Problems at the surface are like the tip of an Iceberg. What is hidden under the surface is always more massive and complex. Surface problems may be caused by a multitude of issues. Diving deeper and seeking the root causes will reveal the complexity of the challenge and a greater comprehension of how this problem truly impacts your business. The identifying and defining of root causes can solve a multitude of surface problems and reveal greater understanding. There are other approaches, but I recommend the use of “Lean” to target root cause issues, drive change, achieve process improvement, and accomplish new goals. Use of the “Lean 5 Why” technique is a method to use to dig away at the symptoms and lead to the root cause of a problem. For example, consider this. Problem Statement: The company did not make a delivery of product on time. Why are we late? •

Because the product was not assembled on time.

Why was it not assembled on time? •

Because it was not cut in time to meet the assembly schedule?

Why was cutting delayed? •

Because the cutting was not released from the design department on time.

Why were shop drawings delayed? •

Because sales and the customer where still working out a detail on the structure.

Why did Sales push the job into production, before all of the details were resolved? •

Because the customer had a performance schedule that needed to be hit.

What is the root cause of this problem? Next Month: How to start using “Lean” tools to accomplish your goals. PHONE: 800-289-5627

Are You Training for Consistent Customer Experience or Just Hoping It Happens?

I

t seems that fewer companies are training employees to deliver consistent customer experiences; instead, they seem just to be hoping that the people they hire will know what they are doing. While training anyone who deals with customers on the “company way” is not the only tool for attaining happy customers, it certainly seems to be on the decline. A trend that I am personally experiencing more often is poor and/or inconsistent customer service. Most likely, this has happened to everyone at least once. On one trip, the service you receive is excellent; on another trip, it is not great or downright bad. But what really is the difference? Not the product, because it stays the same. The difference is that the people providing the service are doing it inconsistently. In my opinion, one experience is professional and the other is not. So who is at fault? Is the problem the employee who was not the best representative for the company and made the bad impression? Maybe in the specific instance, but the problem has a deeper cause than that. The bottom line is that management and supervision are to blame. They have left their customer experience to chance, hoping that the service providers know what they are doing. When a service is done and paid for, management’s concern should be if I will choose to do business with them again. Probably not, if I can find an alternative, as I don’t know what to expect next time. I will seek out a place with consistently good service. Not every visit has to be perfect, just consistently good. Product and service quality should be consistent every time. When that doesn’t happen, training says that someone should step in to ensure customer satisfaction. Keeping customers happy, however, takes consistent training at all levels. That is not an easy solution, but neither is quality control in the plant. Both are key elements that define your customer’s experience and likelihood of doing business with you again. You may want to look at your program—and if you don’t have one, get one. Teach everyone who interacts with customers on your company way. Don’t leave it to chance or the sole discretion of the person providing the service, set specific standards of service and train everyone to meet or exceed your standards. Just as quality of product can make or break your business, so can the people who provide that product or service to your customers. The answer you want from every customer who does business with your company is, “Yes, I will be back!” Next Month: Setting Standards of Performance. You can’t manage what you can’t measure! From Structural Plans to Truss Designs – Collaborative Effort or Review Nightmare? By Kelly Sias, PE

In an ideal world, a building is envisioned and a structural engineer begins the structural design. When the decision to use roof trusses is made, a component manufacturer is promptly involved in the design process. Using the loads and design parameters from the structural engineer, the trusses are designed and those designs are provided back to the engineer. The structural engineer then incorporates the truss designs into the building, transfers the loads through the structure and designs all the structural elements, bracing and connections necessary to provide a continuous load path down to the foundation. Finally, working from the complete and detailed plans, the contractor constructs the building flawlessly. Perfection! But let’s get back to reality, where buildings are often designed and ground broken by the time the trusses are designed. The building Designer creates a roof framing plan to analyze and transfer the loads between the roof system and the rest of the building, and then designs the building (from the top plate down) accordingly. The component manufacturer (CM) eventually gets the plans and uses them to create a truss placement diagram and gather the truss design criteria. The CM then communicates the truss design parameters to the truss design engineer, who designs each of the individual trusses. The CM provides those truss designs and the truss placement diagram back to the building Designer. So far so good, right? If every building were rectangular with a gable-style roof, this process would be fairly simple and hasslefree. But buildings are often more complicated than that. Roof systems can get very complex, so things don’t always go according to plan…such as when a wall that was intended to be non-load bearing gets used as a bearing location for the trusses; or when the CM moves a girder to a different location that works better for the trusses. Or maybe a truss can’t be designed for the entire span and an additional support is needed. In some cases, the CM may even flip the direction of the trusses completely because it results in a more efficient (lower-cost) truss package – that’s better for the building, right? Changes during the design process can result in additional labor, material and cost. In today’s fast-tracked world, how can these expenses be avoided? Below are some suggestions from a truss Designer’s perspective.

Know each party’s design responsibilities This may not seem like it has much to do with minimizing changes during the design process, but some problems arise from the fact that there is not always a common understanding of each party’s responsibilities. One misconception is that truss design engineers design an entire roof system, and they design the roof truss system to work within the framework of the building as set forth in the building structural plans. This is not true! Truss design engineers design single components, not systems. They do Continued next page

not even see the building Designer’s plans. It is the CM that receives the construction documents to obtain the truss design criteria and requirements. They in turn communicate the truss design parameters to the truss design engineer. It is also important to understand the role the truss placement diagram plays in the overall process. This is a commonly misunderstood document, because many people think this is an engineered document prepared by the truss design engineer. Not only do truss design engineers not prepare these documents, they do not even review them. Instead, the CM creates the truss placement diagram after reviewing the construction documents. A truss placement diagram is only intended to identify the assumed location for each truss and serve as a truss installation aid. In fact, the truss industry intentionally changed the description of this document at one point from “truss placement plan” to “truss placement diagram” because the word “plan” has a connotation associated with engineering and design, and a truss placement diagram does not involve either of those. Understanding how the truss industry operates and the responsibilities each party has in the design process will prevent incorrect assumptions from being made. If you find yourself saying, “I’m sure the truss design engineer will check this and take care of it…,” you probably need to think again.

The clearer the specifications, the better This may seem obvious, but do the construction documents contain all of the information necessary for the preparation of the truss design drawings? ANSI/TPI 1 specifies the required information in the construction documents. Anything less than this information will mean assumptions need to be made during the creation of the truss placement diagram and the design of the trusses. The building Designer can also specify additional requirements to help ensure that the trusses they get are the trusses they want. Continued next page

In short, the more complete, accurate and detailed the construction documents are, the better the design process will be.

Required information in the construction documents (excerpted from ANSI/TPI 1-2014)

Review, review, review It is the building Designer’s responsibility to review (and approve or reject) both the truss placement diagram and the individual truss design drawings for conformance with the overall building design. As mentioned earlier, the truss design engineer is solely responsible for the design of the individual trusses; they do not review the entire truss system and they do not check to see that the truss placement diagram meets the intent of the framing plan and specifications. Further, the component manufacturer relies on the completeness and accuracy of the information in the construction documents to create the truss placement diagram and to communicate the truss design requirements to the truss design engineer. Therefore, the success of the building’s construction depends on the building Designer’s thorough review of the truss submittal package. Continued next page

News & Announcements

Collaboration is key Building Designers know what is best for the overall building; component manufacturers know what is best for the trusses. The best-case scenario is when the building gets the best of both. This requires collaboration during the planning stages, so that the strengths of both parties can be utilized to their maximum potential. A building Designer who finds out from the CM what the best setback distance is for a particular hip roof will not only minimize changes to the design downstream, but will also likely end up with a lower-cost building. On the other hand, a building Designer who provides some input into the actual truss designs, such as strategically placed webs in a string of trusses, will end up with a more efficient, permanent bracing plan that can even be included in the original construction documents. Some may think the answer to this design process challenge is to let the building Designers design the trusses themselves; that all they need is the truss design software and they can design the trusses as part of their building design. But the truss industry knows that truss design software cannot replace the ingenuity and creativity of talented CMs who have a passion for what they do; just the same way that engineering software cannot ever replace an experienced engineer. That is why the truss industry continues to work hard to make it easier to collaborate, in lieu of providing truss design software to people outside of the component manufacturing industry. In this way, everyone’s skill sets can be fully utilized. New Fire Wall Hanger Now Available with Skewed or Offset Top-Flange Options Pleasanton, Calif. – To provide more options for multifamily construction builders, the new Simpson StrongTie® DGH fire wall hanger can now be ordered with a skewed or offset option. This hanger is part of the new DG fire wall hanger series designed for connecting floor trusses and joists to wood stud walls. All models of the DG fire wall hanger series easily install on a two-hour wood stud fire wall (e.g., Type III construction) during framing. These top-flange hangers feature space to allow two layers of 5/8” gypsum wall board (drywall) to be slipped into place after the framing is complete. The DG/DGH/DGB fire wall hangers have been tested according to ASTM E814 and received F (flame) and T (temperature) ratings for use on one or both sides of the wall. They are listed in Intertek Design No. SST/ WPCF 120-01. “As soon as we released the new fire wall hanger series in July, we immediately turned our attention to developing these two special options. We listened to customer feedback about the strong need to offer solutions for the two most common nonstandard connections they encounter on the jobsite,” said Sam Hensen, vice president and general manager for Connectors and Lateral Systems at Simpson Strong-Tie. News & Announcements Simpson Strong-Tie Launches Next Generation of Composite Strengthening Systems™ for Concrete and Masonry Structures Pleasanton, Calif. – With the new fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) from Simpson Strong-Tie, contractors can effectively repair, protect and strengthen concrete and masonry structures for a fraction of the installed cost of traditional shotcrete repairs that use rebar. The FRCM externally bonded Composite Strengthening System™ combines high-performance sprayable mortar with a carbon-fiber grid that creates a thin structural layer without significantly increasing the structure’s weight or volume. Because of its reduced preparation and installation time, FRCM is in many cases the most economical available solution for adding flexural, axial, or shear strength to a range of structures. The lightweight, sprayable matrix is ideal for application on overhead or vertical surfaces in structures such as tunnels, mines, parking garages, silos, bridges, and other buildings with large surface areas. A single, one-inch layer provides sufficient structural strengthening without substantially constricting tight spaces or adversely affecting facility operations. Further strengthening can be obtained as necessary through the application of additional half-inch layers. FRCM can: • Strengthen aging, damaged or overloaded structures • Be used to repair surfaces and strengthen them in a single application • Correct size and layout errors • Match the substrate’s finish • Upgrade ratings for live loads due to changes of use or new equipment • Assist in seismic retrofits by adding shear strength and mitigating displacement and ductility • Be used on damp substrates, and in harsh environments that may expose the system to high temperatures, humidity, abrasion, and ultraviolet (UV) exposure FRCM Components The sprayable, fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (CSS-CM) is available in 55 lb. (24.9 kg) bags. The accompanying carbon-fiber grid is available in two separate models to suit the needs of any project: bidirectional (BCG) and unidirectional (UCG). Each roll of carbon-fiber grid measures 77 inches (1.95 meters) wide and 164 feet (50 meters) long. These products and components were tested together in UL Design No. N859, and achieved a four-hour fire rating when subjected to ASTM E119/UL 263 full-scale fire testing. For additional information on FRCM, including technical data sheets, load ratings and more, strongtie.com/frcm.

New Performance Path Guide Compares Options for Meeting Energy Code A new guide published by APA – The Engineered Wood Association describes how builders can cost-effectively meet energy code requirements by valueengineering energy efficiency for a whole-home system. Viewing the home as a system means getting more bang for the buck by allocating construction dollars for value, trading out higher-cost energy-efficiency assemblies where they are not necessary. Today’s energy codes address all major components and systems in a structure, including the building envelope, mechanical systems, service water heating, lighting, and air infiltration. The performance path uses energy modeling to demonstrate the building as a whole uses equal or less energy than a home built to the prescriptive path, which alternatively looks at each component for a specified R- or U-value. The performance path allows flexibility to trade out of many of the high-cost assemblies required in the prescriptive path, while delivering a home that is more energy-efficient as a whole. While the more recent versions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) require stricter energy efficiency in residential buildings, they also give builders more options for compliance. Builders can implement performance-based options, such as the Energy Rating Index (ERI) and the Simulated Performance Alternative to comply with the code. This can reduce energy use while containing construction costs and maintaining the structural integrity of wall assemblies by using continuous wood structural panel wall sheathing to meet critical structural code requirements. “Builders should be able to quickly get a handle on the energy impacts of certain assemblies and systems,” said Tom Kositzky, APA Field Services Director. “That way they can confidently engage with their energy rater to get the greatest return for their dollar as they seek to cost-effectively increase energy efficiency.” Alternative methods, or “paths,” for energy code compliance are identified in the new guide, Performance Path to Energy Code Compliance, Form R505A. The guide is available for free download from the APA website at https://www.apawood.org/energyefficiency. About APA – The Engineered Wood Association Founded in 1933 and based in Tacoma, Washington, APA represents approximately 169 plywood, oriented strand board, glulam timber, wood I-joist, Rim Board and structural composite lumber mills throughout North America. Its primary functions are quality auditing and testing, applied research, and market support and development. www.apawood.org PHONE: 800-289-5627

2018 Could Bring More of the Same: Tight Labor and Costly Materials

NAHB Disappointed in ITC Canadian Lumber Ruling

NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald said the association is not satisfied with today’s ruling by the International Trade Commission (ITC) that lumber shipments from Canada pose a threat of injury to domestic lumber producers. “We are disappointed by the ITC ruling and believe this is a protectionist measure designed to safeguard the interests of major domestic lumber producers at the expense of American consumers,” MacDonald said in a press statement. “This decision means the tariffs imposed by the Commerce Department will remain in effect for Canadian lumber shipments into the United States. These tariffs are acting as a tax on American home buyers and lumber consumers. “NAHB estimates that these tariffs will increase the price of an average single-family home built in 2018 by $1,360. Since the U.S. doesn’t produce enough lumber to meet the nation’s domestic needs, we need to take steps to boost domestic production. At the same time, the U.S. and Canada need to hammer out an equitable agreement to resolve this ongoing trade dispute that will provide American consumers a steady supply of lumber at a reasonable price.”

In the bi-weekly newsletter Eye on the Economy, NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz provided the following overview: After a mild 2016, economic growth gained momentum in 2017. New jobs continue to be produced and unemployment (4.1%) is low. While this is positive news for housing demand, the unceasingly tight labor market conditions mean increased competition among employers for a smaller number of available workers. This is one of the reasons the construction industry continues to see an elevated number of open jobs: 227,000 in October, near a post-recession high. It also implies additional wage growth in the year ahead. Builders can also expect continued growth in the cost of building materials. Since the beginning of the year, OSB prices have jumped 30%, softwood lumber prices are up almost 15% and gypsum prices have increased almost 8%. Additional building material supply is needed as the home building sector grows. However, duties imposed on Canadian softwood lumber of almost 21% accomplish the opposite of what the industry and home buyers need. NAHB estimates that the tariff on lumber imports alone is responsible for a nearly 7% price increase and has already driven up the price of a new home by an average of $1,360.

News & Announcements MiTek® Expands Its FWH Fire Wall Hanger Series, With Hangers That Offer New, High-Load-Carrying Capacity The New “Fire Wall Hanger for Beams and Purlins” Can Support Loads of More Than 5,700 Pounds CHESTERFIELD, MO – November 29, 2017 – (BUSINESS WIRE) – MiTek USA, a leading manufacturer of code-approved structural connectors, anchors, and epoxy, and a developer of software tools for design and workflow, today announced the national availability of a new FWH Fire Wall Hanger connector: FWHBP, for Fire Wall Hanger for Beams and Purlins. The FWHBP can transfer loads of more than 5,700 pounds into supporting walls by bearing on the wall’s top plates and directly attaching to the stud pack or post below. As with MiTek’s original FWH hanger, the advanced design allows users to install the new hangers before the drywall is attached, eliminating an extra framing step, shortening the process, and allowing a project to be completely framed-up and weather-tight before the drywall shows up on site. “With this new, high-load-capacity fire wall hanger, and our original FWH connector, MiTek has solved a persistent problem in the framing of wood-framed structures,” said MiTek’s Steve Brekke. “As with the original FWH, the FWHBP can be installed during the framing stage and before the drywall arrives on site, eliminating a framing step, and lowering exposure of the drywall to weather or damage.” About MiTek Builder Products A division of MiTek USA, Inc., the Builder Products division integrates a number of businesses, building products, and brands, which MiTek has assembled after a remarkable series of developments and acquisitions. The Last Word... Flying High in the New Year

Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com

W

ith the holidays over and everyone going back to business as usual, I’m drawn to a topic that may help a weary traveler this year. Even if you’re stuck 20,000 feet in the air like I was, you can still get lots of good information to soothe a worried mind. For example, I could see from my back-of-the-seat monitor (below), we had just broken out of our circling pattern and were headed to Reagan Airport. I was then able to see on my iPhone that I would make my connecting flight. End of worry. And, on the ground, you have easier access to the same data, for example: Incoming flight status on airlines’ websites lets you verify that the plane coming in to pick you up is on schedule BEFORE you leave home. You may also set up alerts to email or text you when it departs. Layover times and proximity of gates are available so that you know what “cushion” you have in the event of delays.

In the event of delays, get on your smartphone and find alternate routes to your destination, using www.Google. com/flights, considering all airlines, and even alternate routing if advantageous. Then when you speak to your airline, you know your options. Fly easier in 2018!
