hank you to everyone who participated in our 2nd Holiday Favorites contest! With 9 questions and 3 options for each, the poll results showed a lot of variation in our readers’ Thanksgiving traditions.

Anna L. Stamm 800-289-5627 x 3 anna@componentadvertiser.org

Cooking the Turkey in the oven was the clear favorite, but several went onto the grill. In almost every case though, the answer to Where’s the Stuffing was in the oven.

Potatoes & Veggies were both fairly well split between two choices – sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes (baked potatoes finished third) and greenbean casserole was slightly ahead of corn. As for the Cranberry Sauce though – there was no clear winner between made from scratch, fresh from the can, or a fruity mix. Gimme Pie – pumpkin, please, but apple made a strong showing and pecan faired okay too. Meanwhile, Beverages of the Day took many people to the punch bowl, although alcoholic came in second and carbonated remained in the mix. And finally, the answer to How Many Chairs was resoundingly to use the table leaves. Even so, When’s Dinner was less clear, with the votes divided between near noon, midafternoon, and evening. The lucky winners—Carol Aylsworth of Acer Inc. and Ben Hershey of 4Ward Consulting. Each is receiving this tin of Cheryl’s® cookies.

Tom Manenti, Outgoing Chairman of MiTek Industries, Inc. Joe Kannapell - Senior VP MiTek Industries, Inc. www.mii.com

I

know not a steadier and more upright leader than Thomas J. Manenti, who elevated his company from good to great over his 40-year tenure. His characteristic humility and aplomb enabled him to navigate most of his career among strong egos. Tom is the consummate people person who transformed MiTek to become the People Place. He hailed from the Bronx via North New Jersey, and after serving our country in the U.S. Army, joined Gang-Nail, then the premier company in this industry, as a Sales Manager. Tom adapted well to his Midwest posting, beginning lasting business relationships, and finding a life partner, his wife Cathy. In short order though, Tom was summoned to South Florida to become Sales Manager, and, not long after, he was promoted to President of Gang-Nail. That title quickly became a dubious distinction. As a young manager, Tom confronted formidable challenges: maintaining the reputation of the most venerable company in his industry, while navigating both the severe 1980’s housing recession and staving off the commoditizers. To make matters worse, Gang-Nail was hemorrhaging money from their engineered wood venture. As a result, Gang-Nail’s billionaire owners lost patience, and sold to a smaller competitor, Hydro-Air Engineering. As part of the acquired company, Tom adjusted to his subordinate position with his usual professionalism. He buttoned up the South Florida operation while carrying with him to St. Louis most of Gang-Nail’s good will. This move gave Tom the insight that would prove essential in the roll-up years of the Nineties. Tom was the steady, welcoming leader, who melded into the rechristened MiTek the best talent of many more acquisitions. Bolstering his leadership persona are his organizational talents, aided by his rapid adoption of the best tools of the day. Early on, he became an expert, and instructed us on use of the Day Timer Organizer. And, as soon as it availed itself, Tom embraced the best use of the computer, never substituting email when human interaction was called for. This administrative expertise, on top of his accounting training, gave him the skills he would need to assemble and run a multi-faceted organization, and this highlights his latest feat, diversification. After leading MiTek to industry pre-eminence, Tom embraced this chapter, undeterred by Gang-Nail’s setback early in his career. And he now has grown MiTek to become a billion dollar “diversified global supplier of software, engineered products, and services to the residential and commercial construction sectors,” as described in Warren Buffett’s annual report. With characteristic humility, Tom would credit his success to the team he has assembled, to whom he now leaves his company. However, no single individual has made a larger mark on this industry, and created a finer legacy for his company than Thomas J. Manenti.

BCMC 2017 Raising the Stakes Omaha, NE

By April Burt, Director, Simpson Strong-Tie

T

he 36th annual BCMC show took place in late October at CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The location of the venue in relation to the downtown and hotels could not have been better. It was an easy walk across the sky bridge to the event center and a short ride to the old market area downtown for one of the finest steaks in the country. The iconic show has really bounced back from the economic downturn, and this year’s event saw a record number of show-goers and exhibitors. Individual attendance was up 10% over last year and has steadily increased since 2013. In total, there were 245 companies represented and 758 attendees. If you add in the 597 exhibitor staff, the showroom floor was hopping. As usual, the BCMC show began Tuesday with many events to choose from. Some attendees decided to brave the gale-force winds and attempt a round of golf, while others tempted fate on the show’s first-ever offered bike ride. A less hazardous option was to enjoy the indoor setting of the SBCA Pre-Show Management Seminar with Kent Pagel. No matter how each show-goer decided to spend the day, the evening concluded with an industry roundtable, happy hour and casino game night hosted by the Emerging Leaders Committee. After a full first day, the exhibit hall opened on Wednesday, giving attendees the opportunity to browse all the exhibitors’ booths and see the latest offerings. This year, the Simpson Strong-Tie booth was adjacent to the bocce ball courts that we sponsored. It was a nice position for us because we were close to the show entrance and had a consistent flow of attendees in our booth. As in years’ past, we had a video running onscreen showcasing our software, as well as a touchscreen display demonstrating our latest software and the newly implemented, cloud-hosted task tracker/calendar functionality. In addition to getting a sneak peek of our new Component Solutions™ software, the booth featured a small demo area showcasing the features and benefits of our structural fasteners, including our Strong-Drive® SDW Truss-Ply and SDW EWP-Ply screws and our Strong-Drive SDWC Truss screw. Our new DG firewall hanger was also on display. The software demo suite was very busy as well, with a constant flow of prospective customers, component manufacturers wanting to see our software progress, and current customers excited to get a preview of the latest features in our upcoming release. Although the annual charitable BCMC Build event did not occur this year, we were able to give back in another way by hosting educational sessions for local junior college students from Omaha’s Metropolitan Community College. Thirty-five students had the opportunity to walk the showroom floor, mingle with manufacturers and suppliers, and attend breakout sessions provided by the truss plate and software companies. We hope the experience showcased some of the many benefits of working in our industry. The week concluded with the SBCA Open Quarterly Board Meeting. The well-attended meeting provided the opportunity to thank the outgoing SBCA president, Jack Dermer of American Truss, and welcome the incoming president, Jim Finkenhoefer from Truss Systems Georgia. The next BCMC will take place in Milwaukee, WI, October 23–26, 2018. We look forward to seeing you there!

T

o expedite the adoption of pre-built wall panels, shop labor must be significantly lower than site labor. That means replacing hand-nailing, measuring, cutting, and manhandling with practices that have been proven in truss fabrication. In addition, major builders and reluctant framers demand the same degree of precision with panels that they have grown to expect from trusses. To achieve this exactitude in a dwindling labor market dictates adoption of the best manufacturing practices: Optimal Material Sourcing means storing and handling raw materials efficiently, just in time for cutting. Given that linear saws like the Blade can cut all parts, header material can be stored with stick lumber close to the saw infeed and fed to the saw just in time. Soon automated retrieval systems like the Ranger will drastically reduce the labor to feed the saw for wall panel parts. Precision Cutting is imperative on all wall parts, but identification of resulting indistinguishable pieces is just as critical. These parts need to be marked as they are cut to lessen downstream handling and to guide framing, and is best done with a linear saw. There is no better way to cut the studs of rake panels. Likewise, the X-Y saw has been reborn to rip and crosscut sheathing, eliminating manual measurements. Just-in-Time supply of panel parts means that ALL necessary pieces and assemblies are delivered to framers marked and ready to put together. CMs have begun investigating “cart bots” – robotic carts with optical sensors that can be summoned from tables to deliver the next cart of assembly parts to the table. Walmart has patented such a system for retrieving and returning shopping carts to/from holding areas. Kanban aggregation of repetitive parts, like studs, jack-sets, and sheathing, combines the best of both mass production and just-in-time practices. The component nailer is also being re-adapted in this vein to lessen labor and minimize hand-nailing in the production of carts full of these common components. Workflow Control via programs like ShopNet eliminates paperwork, expedite the workflow, and now enable labor tracking. The inclusion of extensive blocking and sheathing holdbacks/extensions has debunked the linearfoot-costing model. Measuring actual labor consumption and comparing it to estimated labor enables much more accurate pricing going forward, and is the key to panel profitability. Proper Integration of Automation is essential, so that an automated piece of equipment, like a sheathing bridge, is not dependent on imprecise hand-nailing of studs. Since the bridge operator keys off the nail heads, if they are off by even a one quarter inch, the sheathing fasteners are likely to miss the studs, causing rework or, at worst, rejection in the field. Safety and integration of automation will require use of nail carriages on framing tables, long since rejected by framers, but far superior in accuracy. More Innovation is being sought to leverage the efficiency of the Single Tool Bridge by production managers like Owen Eldridge of Homestead Building Systems. Owen believes an automated sheathing bridge is needed so that he may redeploy the operator to stack panels or other tasks while sheathing is automatically nailed. Any innovation that reduces staffing on the panel line is worth trying, according to Owen, and clearly innovation in the wall panel business is just beginning.

Mistake Proofing the Communication Quote and Order Process

I

n lean terminology, there is a term called Poka-Yoke, which, roughly translated from Japanese, means to mistake-proof the manufacturing process. A more accurate translation could be “inadvertent error prevention.” In a nutshell, one tries to make any manufacturing process bulletproof so that inadvertent errors are not created because the system process is simplified and does not allow for errors (or is “idiot-proof”). One can understand that much of the manufacturing process becomes a higher degree of mistake proofing through automation, but what about the rest of the project processing? What about from the time the customer initiates the communication all the way until invoicing? The majority of the time spent processing any project is languishing in the communication and quote/design process. Think about your current practices for any order or quote in your company. Does your company only process one type of product such as trusses, or does it have many different products and services to offer any one customer? The more departments and personnel that are involved, the more likely it is that an error will occur. Often, the only response is that “more training” is needed to prevent reoccurring errors. If an error is occurring, one should always review the process first, not the people. Are people following a well-defined process, and are the tools they use for this process error proof? If not, why not? All the various forms of communication—static written forms, phone calls, e-mails, text messages, schedules, project documents, and company, customer and project standards—become even more complex when more than one user group is affected. Too often, too much is being handled by someone’s memory and non-linked systems. An example of this is a lumberyard’s projects that include doors, windows, EWP, and many other specialty items. Everything is communicated via a disjointed process with no tracking or monitoring by a non-mistake-proof single system. Just as you do the manufacturing process, automate your communication and project process to make it mistake proof. Here are some suggestions to make the project process more automated and therefore enhance inadvertent error prevention.

a

Create an automated system that works in every department, not just manufacturing! Have a system that links every department with the same information and yet is flexible enough that each department only has the pertinent information it needs. For a lumberyard, the system could be specific to each department, such as doors, windows, EWP and many other specialty items.

a

Automate the method of knowing what is needed next and what has yet to be done into one seamless system. Know what, when, and how to do something via automated notification, reminders, and schedules that inform each person or group. This would be not just the manufacturing groups but all admin areas that are all being monitored and tracked for the work being done via an automated system. Every study shows improved productivity when people know they are being monitored and benchmarked.

Automate the communication of the defined standards for the company, customer, and project. Why not have a simple means that shows if the user clicks an option, up pops a screen on which the user must choose one of the multiple defined choices before proceeding to the next step? Once the user chooses an option, it is conveyed to all the right people throughout project processing. This way you can define each of the company, customer, and project standards and simplify them.

a

Automate the method of project communication so that everything is linked to each project. Why not have all the e-mails, text, notes, documents, and schedules linked to each project? Grouping information like this always makes errors less prone!

a

For the love of everything that is good in this world, make sure you make this automated system a true web browser system, not some client terminal-server make-believe cloud wannabe. There is a huge difference between a true web browser system and a shared client terminal system. With a true cloud web browser system, all project information can be processed via any web browser on a cell phone, tablet, or computer, which is almost impossible on a terminal server system.

So, how do you implement an automated web browser communication system to create a less error-prone system? Well, there are multiple ways with different levels of needed money and effort. The all-too-common method is hiring expensive coders or IT gurus who claim, “I can get all of that done for you in-house in about six months to a year. No problem!” If you speak with anyone who has gone the coding-in-house route, you will hear a commonly repeated phrase about the number three. Whatever cost and amount of time these gurus tell you, multiply it by three, and it will be somewhere close to that number to have something resembling what you requested. One thing to keep in mind is that all IT/coders are mechanical gurus who know how to create and fix code, but very few understand user interface issues and can ensure that systems are easy to use. Another version of the same IT gurus will use a hodgepodge of different software programs semi-bundled together to solve different tasks that fails to be automated and mistake proof. In the end, these two common methods end up with hard-to-use software not doing everything it was meant to provide, and only the IT/coder knows how to keep everything running, which is a formula for disaster. Many try using truss plate vendor management software for the truss divisions. Truss management software is somewhat okay for the truss division, but what about every other division? Also, the truss vendor’s software does not have all the items mentioned, such as customized automated project processes that are idiot proof and detailed monitoring of capacity schedules with live performance details of individual people, workgroups, and departments in the admin areas. Wouldn’t it be nice to know the actual status of any project, at every stage from the time of customer contact to invoicing for all divisions, with just a glance at your cell phone? So, what is capable of creating an automated Poka-Yoke (mistakeproof) web browser system? AppWright software. Your company would be able to use e-mails, send texts, schedule people, workgroups and departments with capacity schedules, and link all electronic files and documents, and AppWright has custom user “mistake-proof,” very easy-to-use interface screens. It is already proven and used daily by very large multi-location and small single-location lumberyards, component manufacturers, and home builders. Normal cost is half that of an in-house IT guru or coder. Let AppWright build your automated cloud-based web browser project communication system today. A Case for Providing More Design Info to the Assembly Table It’s true that, by nature, the materials currently used for wood trusses can vary in strength and properties. Given a specific lumber size and grade, truss builders often need to evaluate lumber picked, cut, and provided to build the specific job at hand. After verifying the lumber grade, the next step is to qualify the member’s ability to serve the task at hand. Because of this, some training and education is required for the most effective builder. Truss builders need some understanding of properties and characteristics of lumber so they can identify defects and situations that could impact performance, otherwise near perfect lumber properties will be required. In the photo example, the k web shown has extensive wane in the plated area. Upon inspection, the builders used the connector as specified. However, the plate sized by the truss designer required a joint stress index of 90%, meaning that a significant amount of the available connector is required, allowing for little defects. In fact, this situation would not have improved had the builders upsized the plate one or two sizes because of excessive wane.

The general conclusion is: if we want to utilize marginal material, then design information will be required for the truss builder. Most design software has a provision to print this info. The second (unrelated to the truss photo) is an example of what is possible. This detail provides accurate, exact positioning and available tooth count verses minimum required tooth count shown as a fraction. Providing this detail to the table will enable builders to see joint requirements, thereby allowing them to make sound decisions when utilizing less than perfect lumber.

FLEXIBLE EFFICIENT ACCURATE Truebuild® Layout is an entirely new truss design platform by Eagle Metal, developed in the powerful & proven parametric modeling environment. Design modifications are automatically populated throughout the model for precision accuracy. To maximize designer efficiency, multiple input methods can be used, including conventional UDLR, Reference Dimensions and tracing via DXF, DWG or PDF files.

More than history, the TURBO Drive is German engineered to allow for maximum performance in a given application. With this base, precision performance is improved with software optimization rather than hardware changes. This is apparent when the TURBO Drive was optimized for USA component cutting, the same world model saw runs significantly faster, simply by optimizing movements and stroke. For a demonstration of how software upgrades accomplish this, see the “before & after” video at: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU. It illustrates that software can increase throughput rather than redesigning elements of the equipment, your TURBO Drive does not become yesterday’s news because of a model number change.

FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF HOW SOFTWARE UPGRADES ACCOMPLISH THIS, SEE THE “BEFORE & AFTER” VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/3V5gmXbjQPU

So how much would you pay for software that increases your cutting productivity and keeps your saw current with the latest technology? How about zero? With the Hundegger TURBO Drive, free software updates for life are included with the saw. As software is optimized and performance is enhanced, you’ll never have to worry about what model you bought. No Waste Path Using TIMWOODS Part 9 in our TIMWOODS Series

Ben Hershey, CEO & Coach 4Ward Consulting Group, LLC

Hey TimWoods, it’s time to take a pause with your Gemba walk and talk about a Waste Reduction plan using what we learned in this series.

T

hroughout this series, our friend TimWoods has helped us focus on the wastes of Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over-Production, Over-Processing, Defects, and Skills. To close out the series, let’s talk about some simple steps you can take now to implement a Quality Improvement program focused on TIMWOODS. These wastes are commonly referred to as non-valued-added activities, and they can account for up to 95% of all costs in non-Lean manufacturing environments.

Why Reduce Waste? In a lean business/manufacturing environment, we want to reduce the cost of any product or service by eliminating waste in its development, production, and distribution. So with all things being equal, if costs of all products and services decrease via the lean model, that would, in turn, drive prices down over time as well. Applying lean is about removing waste from the system, so that work-in-process decreases, productivity increases, lead times decrease, quality improves, and on and on. There is a good quote I read from Henry Ford that applies to what we have talked about in this series: “One of the most noteworthy accomplishments in keeping the price of Ford products low is the gradual shortening of the production cycle. The longer an article is in the process of manufacture and the more it is moved about, the greater is its ultimate cost.” Henry Ford (1926)

Quick Review of the Wastes in TimWoods • “T” Transportation – Material should be delivered to its point of use. • “I” Excess Inventory – Related to Overproduction, inventory beyond that needed to meet customer demands negatively impacts cash flow and uses valuable floor space. • “M” Excess Motion – Unnecessary motion is caused by poor workflow, poor layout, housekeeping, and inconsistent or undocumented work methods. • “W” Waiting – This includes waiting for material, information, equipment, tools, etc. • “O” Overproduction – Producing more than the demands. Anything produced beyond this (buffer or safety stocks, workin-process inventories, etc.) ties up valuable labor and material resources. • “O” Over-Processing – Some of the more common examples of this are reworking (the product or service should have been done correctly the first time); parts should be produced without defects. • “D” Defects – Production defects and service errors waste resources. • “S” Skills/Underutilized People –Underutilization of mental, creative, and physical skills and abilities can be caused by poor workflow, organizational culture, inadequate hiring practices, poor or non-existent training, and high employee turnover. Component Manufacturing #10221 Don’t Forget! dverti$er You Saw it in the Adverti$er Page #47 Reducing Waste in a Quality Improvement and/or people in a cell (U-shaped, etc.) rather than in a traditional straight assembly line. Among other things, Program (Continuous Improvement)

It would be tough to detail everything about reducing waste in your operation in this short article; but by reviewing all the previous articles in this series (you can see them on my website or www.4WardConsult.com), we can begin to put together a good starter program. Another way to look at this, for those companies focused on Quality Control and using the SBCA QC Programs, there are similarities in implementing a Continuous/Quality Improvement program. Efforts to reduce waste, defective products, and inventories have increased, while improved productivity, customer satisfaction, and superior quality have become increasingly important. Waste reduction and quality improvement implementation in our component/millwork and LBM yards have certain key elements including top management leadership, measurement participation through quality improvement teams, and communication. Some of the steps you will take are: • Define organization/individuals charged with identifying and implementing reductions in waste • Define and document methods • Establish measurements • Audit plant methods and progress • Review/audit specific manufacturing processes • Refine processes, material movement, etc. In order to reduce or eliminate waste, Lean practitioners utilize many tools or Lean Building Blocks. Successful practitioners recognize that, although most of these may be implemented as stand-alone programs, few have significant impact when used alone. Additionally, the sequence of implementation affects the overall impact, and implementing some out of order may actually produce negative results (for example, you should address quick changeover and quality before reducing batch sizes). The more common building blocks are: • Pull System – The technique for producing parts at customer demand. Service organizations operate this way by their very nature. Manufacturers, on the other hand, have historically operated by a Push System, building products to stock (per sales forecast) or to keep our people busy.

the cellular concept allows for better utilization of people and improves communication. • Total Quality Management – Total Quality Management is a management system used to continuously improve all areas of a company’s operation. TQM is applicable to every operation in the company and recognizes the strength of employee involvement. • Batch Size Reduction – Historically, component companies have operated with large batch sizes in order to maximize machine utilization, assuming that changeover times were “fixed” and could not be reduced. However, a batch size of one is not always practical, so the goal is to practice continuous improvement to reduce the batch size. Smaller batch sizes shorten the overall production cycle, enabling companies to deliver more quickly and to invoice sooner (for improved cash flow). Shorter production cycles increases inventory turns and allows the company to operate profitably at lower margins, which enables price reductions, which increases sales and market share. • 5S or Workplace Organization – This tool is a systematic method for organizing and standardizing the workplace. It’s one of the simplest Lean tools to implement, provides immediate return on investment, crosses all industry boundaries, and is applicable to every function within an organization. • Visual Controls – These are simple signals that provide an immediate and readily apparent understanding of a condition or situation. Visual controls enable someone to walk into the workplace and know within a short period of time (usually thirty seconds) what’s happening with regard to production schedule, backlog, workflow, inventory levels, resource utilization, and quality. These controls should be efficient, selfregulating, and worker managed, and include kanban cards, lights, color-coded tools, lines delineating work areas and product flow, etc.

Benefits of No Waste

• Kanban – A method for maintaining an orderly flow of material. Kanban cards are used to indicate material order points, how much material is needed, from where the material is ordered, and to where it should be delivered.

• Lead Time (Cycle Time) reduced by 90%

• Work Cells – The technique of arranging operations

• Space Utilization reduced by 75%

PHONE: 800-289-5627

• Productivity increased by 50% • Work-In-Process Inventory reduced by 80% • Quality improved by 80%

In addition, in my experience working with 100’s of companies over the past seven years, you will also see multiple administrative/ operational improvements such as: • Reduction in order processing errors • Streamlining of customer service functions so that customers are no longer placed on hold • Reduction of paperwork in office areas • Reduced staffing demands, allowing the same number of office staff to handle larger numbers of orders. It may be daunting to start, but a good way to begin… Take the time to watch your teams, review what they are doing, take notes, and watch. Then, work with your teams, huddles, small groups, and begin to make the necessary changes. As always, if we can be of assistance to you as we have for 100’s of other component manufacturers, give us a call; we would be honored to help contribute to your success.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I look forward to talking with you again in 2018!

TERMINAILER Don’t just do it, nail it.

It’s a brand new day in wall-panel production, with a whole new way of doing things better. Terminailer®, a revolutionary, event-driven, nailing machine that completely defies any preconceived notions about sub-component assembly. Terminailer all but shatters the stereotypical myth that subcomponent equipment is essentially peripheral – unimportant. And it does so by quickly and accurately driving far more framing nails in your wall panel jobs than ever before. Whether in your shop or in the field, one operator sets the pace for production and quality. And that reduces labor costs and other aspects of overhead. Terminailer is an event-driven, sub-component assembler that will quickly and accurately drive 30% to 70% of the framing nails in any wall panel job. In your shop or in the field, one operator sets the pace for production and quality. The Terminailer functions independent of design software, requires zero set-up time when switching between any configuration, and requires no special operator training. With nearly ten years of development from people that know machinery it is assembled to exacting standards, well supported, and it is easily maintained with shelf-item parts. Terminailer: vetted, tested, and ready to drive maximum productivity for you. Be sure to check out our videos below for a quick review of this revolutionary machine!

Changing Suppliers – What’s The Risk? Keith Tindall

W

hen this quote by John Ruskin appeared on a recent LinkedIn post, it led me to think about the best approach for a business considering changing suppliers.

With the phrase, “Buyer Beware,” in the back of my mind, these are some thoughts I jotted down. Businesses will always be motivated to change when they need to solve a specific performance problem. The change could be based on internal or external personnel, geographic location, regulatory requirements, or the economy, to name but a few. These are the three main factors I believe that trigger the need for a business to change as they search for: 1. A Higher Quality Performance Product. 2. Excellent Service and Response Times. 3. The Lowest Priced Service or Product. PHONE: 800-289-5627

In a cooling economy, some may focus mainly on # 3. Is it possible to achieve all these factors in a long term supply partnership? I will let the readers of this article decide. Without the correct research, switching key suppliers for any reason can be costly and sometimes high risk to a business when it comes to a potential area of poor performance. Complicating matters is the fact that not all potential issues in switching suppliers will be obvious on the surface.

Forward Thinking. Respecting the Past. Ask most people about the lumber industry and you’ll get a fairly predictable list of descriptions. What you’re not likely to hear are terms like: ● technologically advanced, ● sustainable logging, ● small log harvesting, ● green lumber products, ● commitment to healthy communities, and ● ecologically-minded forest management When people talk about Vaagen Brothers, that’s exactly what you’ll hear. Working in the forests of Washington for more than 50 years, we’ve learned to take the best of traditional logging and lumber milling practices and combine them with advanced production technologies and forward-thinking sustainable forest management practices to create a company that’s as vibrant and growing as the healthy forests and ecosystems necessary to its success. Fire Safety & Multi-Family Wood Construction AWC Webinar Discusses Fire Protection During Construction Robert Glowinski is the President & CEO of the American Wood Council (AWC).

T

he American Wood Council hosted a webinar in July sharing best practices for fire protection during construction to help mitigate and reduce construction fires. The 90-minute presentation introduced attendees to several recent major construction fires and their reported causes, the many fire-related hazards that exist on construction sites, and industry efforts to improve safety and reduce fire losses. In addition, the webinar helped identify relevant International Building and Fire Code regulations, as well as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements, for fire protection safeguards during construction and solutions for developing simple fire safety strategies. The presentation was not only informative for construction professionals tasked with developing a fire plan for buildings under construction, alteration, or demolition, but also for raising awareness of existing resources for construction site fire safety training, education, and mitigation. In partnership with retired California State Fire Marshal Ronny J. Coleman, AWC also developed a set of fire safety best practice manuals, training videos, and a dedicated website (www.ConstructionFireSafety.org) to educate and inform building and fire safety professionals on how to prevent fires, reduce losses, and ensure fire safety at construction sites. Additional resources mentioned in the webinar include: • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and state worker safety agencies • National Safety Council • Your local fire or building code officials In October, leading fire prevention and code organizations announced the formation of a Construction Fire Safety Coalition dedicated to reducing the occurrence of fires in buildings under construction, alteration, or demolition. The Coalition has been created in collaboration with AWC, Davidson Code Concepts, LLC, FireForceOne, International Code Council (ICC), National Association of Home Builders, National Association of State Fire Marshals, National Fire Sprinkler Association, and a representative of the Cambridge, Mass. Fire Department. At a time when fire safety considerations are of utmost importance, it is crucial for all design and construction professionals to familiarize themselves and their teams with industry best practices and resources available to enhance fire safety at building construction sites. Together, let’s make sure every construction site is a fire-safe construction site. And, in case you missed it, the full webinar presentation is available for viewing online. Anyone interested in joining the Construction Fire Safety Coalition can inquire at: www.constructionfiresafety.org/partners. PHONE: 800-289-5627

Is Your Staff Ready for Change? By Keith Parker Structural Building Components Industry Professional

Y

ou have reached a tipping point and have come to the realization that continuing down your current path will only yield greater pain and more of the same results. Change will bring benefits, you and the senior staff have identified what is in it for the key drivers, and management has committed to the changes required to move your company forward.

What’s next??? The pace of today’s business requires agility and the ability to change. But change for change’s sake is not the objective. You and your senior staff must set new goals. What are your objectives? Increased sales and market share, double digits profits, 100% on-time delivery, reduced design and production cycle time, cut labor % and/ or cost of materials—any and all of these new goals must be communicated and a concrete plan must be documented as to how the company will support and accomplish each new goal.

Now you need to extend your vision, plan, and new goals to the company at large—the design, estimating, production, and delivery staff—and seek their input and buy-in. You need to identify actions to modify and processes to improve. For example, if a truss fabricator has developed an ingrained routine of hitting connector plates 6 to 8 times or taking 8+ steps to find and place a web or chord to assemble a truss, how do you break these habits?

WIIFT — “What’s In It For Them?” To pursue new goals requires communication and buy-in at every level. How to achieve buy-in? Make these people part of the process, collaborate with those you wish to influence, and seek their input and understanding as to why these goals and challenge must be met. To break poor habits and drive change, what incentives can you put in place to change routine and behavior? Incentives could be financial, additional paid time off, or a rewards program. But whatever you, and your front line workers, choose and agree upon, the incentive must drive change and everyone must be held accountable to achieve the stated goal(s).

How and where do you start? What tools will you need to accomplish the task? Toyota changed from a poor quality manufacturer of automated sewing looms to a world class car manufacturer by embracing “Lean” methods of process improvement.

Next Month: What is Lean and how to develop and define a critical path

Safety First! Safety Meeting Topics From State Fund CA.

Safety and Substance Abuse Dont Mix Drug use and alcohol consumption are normally considered personal issues. They only become an employers concern when they affect safety and worker performance. Drug and alcohol abuse cost employers through high absenteeism and sick pay. Abusers hurt themselves and their families if they lose their job as a result of their actions. If they are fired or cannot function on the job, the company loses the services of an experienced worker. Those under the influence of drugs or alcohol cause friction in the work group, lower morale and work efficiency, use poor judgment that results in bad decisions, and give the company a poor public image. Certain times of the year individuals should be especially aware of their alcohol and drug consumption. In the winter months when the days are dark and dreary, some people experience a sense of depression or seasonal affected disorder (SAD). They may turn to drugs or alcohol in the mistaken belief it will relieve the symptoms of the disorder.

Don’t Forget!

The holiday season, with increased social gatherings or added financial stress, leads some people to misuse drugs or alcohol, especially during this year of millennium celebration. Those who over-consumed alcohol or drugs yesterday and are hung over today may feel out of sorts, still trying to recover, and may not give all their attention to the safety aspects of their job. Remote Designers: Cost Effective Component or Necessary Evil?

B

efore you get the wrong impression—No, I don’t think remote designers are evil, just that some employers are still reluctant to accept them as a viable option. Going beyond the question of if you will use remote designers, let’s get to the reason you should so you can embrace a means to level out design department costs. Just a few years ago, we saw the idea of having a few designers who worked from home occasionally, or even full time, as unique, not in the plan but just as happened on a case by case basis. You knew the designer and their abilities, and understood that they needed the remote option. Still, Design managers would say, “I need them here or I can’t manage their production” or “How do I know they are actually working?” Well, they must have figured it out, because today, even though In-House Designers are still preferred, remote designers are common in most of our clients’ design departments. Once the flood gates opened and companies developed systems to manage remote designers who were anywhere from a few to hundreds of miles from the plant, Designers saw that remote was a real career option. Whatever the reason—distance to work, family needs, or just personal preference—the number of designers wanting to work remotely expanded exponentially. As the numbers of remote design candidates grows, employers have seen a means to add capacity, lower overall design department costs, and have incentives to be in-house. Some of my employers believe that working remotely is a personal choice and having that option in itself is a perk. With the competition for remote positions growing, some employers are setting a different scale for in-house and remote designers. Supply and demand has made remote positions a commodity, for the time being. So, on to the savings point. From where I sit, the difference between working remotely and in-house, for companies implementing a two tier system, is about 10%. This is for hired, not 1099 contract positions. Hourly rates for in-house designers are about 10% higher. Sometimes the in-house positions were increased 10%, but most are cutting their remote designer scale by 10%, the perceived work from home perk. Some employers want to incentivize in-house over remote as they feel that, if an employee is on site, it is easier to mentor, bond, and have confidence to invest in additional training, responsibility, and advancement. One of my top employers is adamant that, if someone wants to advance beyond a design position to management or another area of the company, remote is not going to offer that option. They feel the personal interaction they get with the employee and interaction with co-workers is not as good from a remote location. So whether you are looking to work remotely, or looking to lower overall design department costs, know that remote is a viable option that can meet both the employer’s and employee’s objectives. Balancing remote and in-house design staff can allow a good employee the flexibility they need while lowering your overall costs.

Truss-to-Truss and Truss-to-Everything Else Connections By Kelly Sias, PE One of the questions I am asked most frequently is “Who is responsible for the truss-to-(fill in the blank) connection? One such example is the truss-to-wall connection. To answer this question, it helps to recognize there are two types of connections: a truss-to-truss connection and a “truss-to-everything-elseexcept-a-truss” connection. The Truss Designer is responsible for the former, and the Building Designer is responsible for the latter. Pretty simple, right? So why all the questions?

Excerpt from ANSI/TPI 1-2007 Chapter 2 on Design Responsibilities

Some people incorrectly assume the Truss Designer is responsible for connecting the truss to everything the truss touches. Then, when the Truss Designer doesn’t specify a connection to something the truss touches (such as a wall), it prompts the question, “Hey, who is responsible for that connection? I thought the Truss Designer was!” In other cases, the person asking the question is actually challenging the answer, such as “Shouldn’t the Truss Designer be specifying the truss-to-wall connection? Why don’t they?” And finally, the question may be prompted at times when the project doesn’t have a Project Engineer (aka the Building Designer), so the question becomes, “Now who is going to specify that connection? It must be the Truss Designer, right?”

But the Truss Designer isn’t responsible for the truss-to-wall connection – and here’s why. Unless the scope of work has been expanded by contract, the Truss Designer is responsible for designing an individual component. The truss gets designed for a given set of specified loads, environmental conditions, serviceability criteria and support locations, all which are specified by the person responsible for the overall building: the Building Designer. Once designed, the truss will have a maximum download reaction and uplift reaction (if applicable) at each support location. Is that enough information to specify a truss-to-wall connection? No, it is not. First, the Truss Designer may not know what the truss is even sitting on; he or she may only know that the bearing is SPF material and 3 ½” wide. Is it a single top plate or double top plate? Is there a stud below the truss that can be connected to, or is the stud offset? Or, is the truss sitting on a header spanning across a wide window?

Sample Truss Reactions

Second, even if the Truss Designer had all of the information regarding the bearing conditions, there is another problem. The Truss Designer has the reactions resulting from the loads applied to the truss. What about the reaction at the top of the wall (perpendicular to the wall) resulting from the lateral loads applied to that wall? And the shear loads acting parallel to the wall as a result of lateral loads applied to the end wall? These loads also need to be resisted by the truss-to-wall connection (hence, the F1 and F2 allowable loads that are published for hurricane ties), so the Truss Designer cannot select an adequate truss-to-wall connection based on the truss reactions alone.

Finally, there’s one more scenario to consider. Say a Building Department requires that truss-to-wall connections must be specified by the Truss Designer on projects that have no Engineer of Record. It wants to ensure trusses are adequately secured to the walls, and the Truss Designer may seem best equipped to determine those connections (this has actually happened in some places). The Truss Designer can find out what exactly the truss is sitting on, and can even calculate some approximate reactions for the top of the wall to conservatively take into account during the selection of the connection. Problem solved? Not entirely. That takes care of the top of the wall, but the load doesn’t stop there. So requiring the Truss Designer to specify the truss-to-wall connection only transfers the problem to the bottom of the wall. Who is going to address those connections?

While most people don’t think of the Truss Designer as being the person responsible for the connections at the bottom of the wall, many do think the Truss Designer should be responsible for the connections at the top of the wall. But because someone – namely, the Building Designer – still needs to ensure that a continuous load path has been satisfied by the connections in the building, does it really help to increase the scope of work of the Truss Designer to specify the truss-to-wall connection?

Continuous Load Path

News & Announcements New Fascia-Fastening Solution from Simpson Strong-Tie Delivers Superior Corrosion Resistance

Pleasanton, Calif. – Simpson Strong-Tie, the industry leader in engineered structural connectors and fasteners, has launched the Fascia-Fastening Solution™ that is designed to securely fasten composite and PVC fascia while providing superior corrosion resistance. The Fascia-Fastening Solution accommodates expansion and contraction of installed fascia boards to prevent material failure resulting from exposure to environmental conditions. The new solution consists of a fascia counterbore bit and a stainless-steel fascia screw. The fascia bit counterbores a hole through the fascia material that is wider than the shank of the fascia screw. The fascia screw is then driven through the predrilled and counterbored fascia material and into the substrate material. Creating a hole wider than the shank of the screw not only enables the screw head to sit flush with the fascia surface, but the extra space allows for future contraction and expansion of composite boards. This process helps contractors prevent failures and reduces jobsite callbacks for head pullover, warping, buckling, mushrooming, broken screws, and loose screws and boards. Installation of the Fascia Fastening Solution requires just a few simple steps and is designed for use with 1/2”- to 3/4”-thick fascia boards. The fascia screw, sold in quantities of 75, features: •

Type-17 point for fast starts

Type 316 stainless steel for severe-level corrosion resistance

Underhead chamber for increased sheer resistance

Low-profile pancake head that resists pullover

Deep T-20 6-lobe recess for fewer cam-outs

Twelve color options for 0.40” heads including white, four shades of tan, two shades of red, three shades of gray and two shades of brown

Size #8 x 1 3/4”

The fascia counterbore bit, sold separately and in single quantities, features: •

1/4” arbor size to fit standard drills

0.25” bore diameter

0.41” counterbore diameter

News & Announcements Build a Solid Career in Construction Management

Posted October 31, 2017 on NAHB Now | The News Blog of the National Association of Home Builders. Reprinted with permission.

NAHB

has been promoting the rewarding job opportunities in the skilled trades for Careers in Construction Month but let’s not forget that the construction manager also offers an exciting career path in the housing industry. Construction managers plan, coordinate, budget and supervise construction projects from inception to completion. He or she ensures that all the trades come together in the completion of a home on schedule, built right, and to the satisfaction of the customer, not to mention meeting all required codes and laws. It’s an important job, and there are a lot of things to know, not the least of which is business acumen. But the rewards are great, and the national average pay for a construction manager in 2016 was $89,300 per year. Demand for construction managers is projected to grow 16 percent between now and 2022. And any action your HBA takes to support your local academic programs is one that will pay huge dividends for your business and the industry. These programs often encompass both commercial and residential construction, so consider ways your HBA can help convince these grads to find their home in the home building industry.

Training Students for Careers in Construction Management NAHB continues to help students across the country develop the necessary skills for home building success, including planning, execution and problem solving, through the NAHB Student Competition held each year at the International Builders’ Show. The competition gives students the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a real construction company by completing a management project/proposal. This year, 62 teams will compete at the secondary and post-secondary levels during the 2018 IBS in Orlando. Your HBA can help coach a student team near you as they prepare over the next two months. They are looking for industry support on topics such as estimating and scheduling or you could help them cover the cost of travel to Orlando. Mark your IBS calendar now to cheer on all the teams from your home state. If you do not see a school competing from your area, consider checking out the colleges and universities that offer degrees in construction management and start supporting them now to prepare them for the 2019 IBS. NAHB’s Student Internships: Resources for Members guide includes a list of accredited construction programs across the country. News & Announcements Has the Labor Shortage Reached ‘Crisis’ Status?

Posted November 1, 2017 on NAHB Now | The News Blog of the National Association of Home Builders. Reprinted with permission.

I

t’s been more than 10 years since there were this many unfilled construction jobs. And as NAHB Chief Economist Robert Dietz noted in a recent Eye On Housing article, the labor situation is likely to worsen in the months ahead. Builders all across the country are struggling to find enough skilled laborers to keep up with housing demand. And nowhere is this more concerning than in the regions of Texas and Florida impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, where the recovery efforts have only just begun. Even the surrounding areas that sustained minimal storm damage are seeing the effects, as labor continues to be drawn to the storm-affected areas. But the labor shortage had been a primary concern long before this summer’s hurricanes made landfall. “Everyone in our area is having trouble finding hands that want to work,” said Michael Grassi, project manager of Classic Builders in Wichita Falls, Texas, and president of the North Texas HBA. “Whether it’s bricklayers, framers, you name it — I’m having to [hire] guys from as far away as Oklahoma City to come [to Wichita Falls] and work. And most of them are happy to do it cause they’re getting paid more here where there’s even less competition.” Grassi says he’s amazed by how much the cost per square foot of a home has increased recently. He’s gradually had to raise the sales prices of his homes as a result of rising costs, but Grassi says he and many builders just like him aren’t seeing an increase in profit margin. “Prices for everything have increased significantly, and I’m scared for what’s to come over the next few years,” Grassi said. “A lot of our skilled trades aren’t far from retirement. And of the limited number of new guys I see coming in, many of them have a ways to go to refine their skills and work ethic. “With everything from the cost of materials, to lots, to a dwindling pool of skilled workers — we have a crisis on our hands.” The issue isn’t exclusive to less-densely populated areas. Not far away in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, builders are facing similar situations. “The shortage of labor in our market has been going on for more than a year now,” said Justin Webb, president of Altura Homes. “We use 100% subcontractors, and many of them are stretched thin with more work than they can handle.” Webb says his subs often times split their crews, enabling them to start multiple jobs simultaneously. But as could be expected, this typically results in extending the overall time to complete the home. “[The scarcity and rising cost of labor] is our No. 1 challenge at the moment. That, and the dramatic cost increases of materials, have greatly contributed to the appreciation of house prices,” Webb said. “We’re concerned that as house prices rise to offset these higher costs, the broader issue of housing affordability will become even more problematic.” For more analysis, visit Eye On Housing. News & Announcements MiTek Publishes Hardy Frame Prescriptive Design Guide, Offering Alternative Braced Wall Solutions with HFX Panels that Comply with 2015 International Residential Code

Lateral Loads from Wind and Earthquakes Require Wood-Framed Structures to be Properly Braced. Hardy Frame® Prefabricated HFX Narrow Shear Wall Panels Offer a Ready Solution in Limited Spaces.

November 07, 2017 – CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – (BUSINESS WIRE) – MiTek announced today that it has just published a new Hardy Frame Prescriptive Design Guide that provides an overview of braced wall design, a flow chart of the design and specification process, and specific instructions to properly apply the Hardy Frame Alternative Braced Wall Solution.

The Hardy Frame Prescriptive Design Guide describes the need to locate Braced Wall Lines, determine the Braced Wall Length, and identify the available Braced Wall Segments within each line. When the total length of the Segments is insufficient to meet the Braced Wall Length requirement, the Hardy Frame Alternative Braced Wall is the solution to meet the International Residential Code (IRC). Garage fronts commonly have limited space that is problematic when specifiers need to meet Braced Wall Lengths and Braced Wall Panel requirements. The Hardy Frame HFX Prefabricated Narrow Shear Wall Panel – manufactured under a quality-control program – is a proven solution for these conditions. The Guide’s prescriptive design flow chart, its tables for equivalent braced wall panel lengths, and the Guide’s details for anchorage into concrete combine to provide a complete design tool for building officials, contractors, designers, and suppliers. Using the Guide, building designers can gain insight into how Hardy Frame Panels can fit their needs by dovetailing with their specification process. With the Guide, building officials will obtain comprehensive information of products and their installation for use in both the plan-check and field-inspection processes. Contractors and suppliers will have a product listing that includes panels, corresponding accessory products, and easy-to-follow installation details. “Meeting the IRC Braced Wall Panel requirements in narrow shear walls, like those so common at garage fronts, has been a challenge in the industry for many years. The Hardy Frame Prescriptive Design Guide provides solutions for those challenging areas, and a better end-product for the homeowner,” said David Lopp, VP of Technical Support for Hardy Frames. “We’ve been providing Prefabricated Shear Wall solutions in engineered designs for close to 20 years, and now we have set a goal to do the same for prescriptive designs.” About MiTek MiTek is a diversified global supplier of software, engineered products, services, and equipment to the residential, commercial, and industrial construction sectors. Don’t Forget, Hire the Vet!

H

Joe Kannapell - Senior VP

ave you hired any military veterans lately, as have many component plants MiTek Industries, Inc. across the country? You will find that they generally have gained the skills, work ethic, www.mii.com and leadership for your supervisory and technical positions. But you will also encounter plenty of competition for the good ones, and you will have to pay them well. Soldiers or airmen who finish a four-year enlistment and have earned a sergeant’s rank may earn a base pay equivalent to about $15 per hour, but with food and housing allowances that translates to $25 per hour or $53,000 per year. Commissioned officers earn the equivalent of $83,000 per year after 4 years of service. Normally only those honorably discharged from the services should be considered (verify this by examining their DD214 form and steer clear of those with General Discharges). Most adaptable to the factory floor are veterans from the army’s combat arms, particularly the infantry. They are trained to manage people and to produce results. Most are willing to do any job, especially if they are learning a valuable skill that translates into a career. Seek especially those who have been deployed overseas and have been exposed to pressure and turnover, not unlike what they will experience as a supervisor on the floor of your plant. Veterans from any of the services are generally more reliable workers and have learned to “get along” with diverse groups of people. The best place to find them is the nearest military base, or those returning to home bases near your business. At our truss plant in San Antonio, for example, we found that rare individual, Mike Evans, who didn’t fit into the military at Lackland Air Force Base, was willing to start on the plant floor amongst an all-Hispanic work force, and quickly earned his way into becoming one of the best truss designers in my experience. Vets from the technical (enlisted or warrant officer) ranks of the Air Force and Navy are good candidates for maintaining the automated equipment found in today’s component plants. Army techs from the helicopter or missile maintenance specialties should also be considered over wheeled vehicle mechanics. Former military officers from all of the services have been trained to work well with people of all ranks, and often have been responsible for the maintenance of sophisticated equipment. A multi-plant CM successfully engaged a 20-year “retiree” as plant manager who had little manufacturing experience, by committing one of his experienced GMs to mentor him onsite. Another large manufacturer has recruited several Military Service Academy graduates (West Point, Annapolis, etc.) and successfully transitioned them into GM positions. They have become excellent, mission-oriented managers who are anxious to improve their operations, and have little tolerance for outdated or inefficient practices. Too often we assume that only veteran trussers have the skills needed for supervisory roles without realizing the value of sophisticated software, like Sapphire Management and MVP. These programs aggregate the technical details and present actionable data that can be understood by a generalist with good people skills and good training, like those who have served us in the military.
