Exhibition
Francis Bacon: In Camera 27 March – 20 June Francis Bacon is acknowledged as one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. Direct and compellingly raw, his paintings generate powerful emotional responses which continue to fascinate and demand our attention. This exhibition will, for the first time, focus on Bacon’s source material and working methods. Besides significant oil paintings from 1944 to 1989, it will include archival material from Bacon’s studio, now in Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane and film footage and stills which shed new light on the visual references to film and photography in his work and his transformation of these images in fluid oil paint. Photographs by Eadweard Muybridge and John Deakin will be displayed alongside the paintings they informed – in particular, Bacon’s reconfigurations of the human body. Exhibition co-organised by Compton Verney and Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane.
Deconstructing Bacon 27 March – 20 June Seen alongside the exhibition Francis Bacon: In Camera will be a display that focuses on Bacon’s working processes. With items from Bacon’s studio, including drawings, unfinished canvases and annotated photographic reproductions of his own work, Deconstructing Bacon will give a fascinating insight into the artist’s working methods. Visit our reading and resource area where you can read books on Bacon, leave your comments and take part in our interactive activities.

Before you leave be sure to enjoy a refreshing drink and light lunch in our award-winning cafe and treat yourself to a print of the Bay of Naples from our shop.
NEW Exhibition: Volcano: from Turner to Warhol 24 July – 31 October 2010 This is the first exhibition to celebrate the extraordinary artistic outpourings that volcanic eruptions have triggered over the past five centuries. The exhibition ranges from early engravings, showing imagined cross-sections of the fiery centre of the earth, to an explosive series of paintings by Joseph Wright, J M W Turner and Andy Warhol. It is a chance to examine the presence of volcanoes as geological phenomena and their power and influence, through an exciting range of historic and recent works of art.
10 10
Eye-opening and spectacular, the exhibition traces a route through the sequence of volcanic eruptions – from the calm volcano and first ominous rumblings, to cataclysmic explosion, through panic and death to aftermath, and then quietly back to dormancy and extinction. It includes important loans from public and private collections in volcanic regions such as Naples and Reykjavik, as well as works from museums in London, Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Paris, Rome and New York.
