HISTORY

During the 19th c e n t u r y, Ti m i ș o a r a under went an important industrial development. I t w a s t h e fi r s t European city to introduce electrical

street lighting in 1884. Later on, in 1899, electric trams also started to be s e e n i n t h e s t r e e t s. I n 1 9 8 9 , Ti m i ș o a r a w a s the city that triggered the movement against the communist r e g i m e, a revolution that soon spread over the entire country and led to

important political c h a n g e s. At present, the e c o n o my o f Ti m i ș o a r a is based on the principles of market e c o n o my. I t i s believed that ancient Dacian and Roman settlements existed in this region, but Ti m i ș o a r a w a s fi r s t mentioned in a document in 1212 – t h e ” D i p l o m a” o f t h e Hungarian King Andrew II. Since 1342, i t h a s b e e n r e fe r r e d to as a town.

The city has had a turbulent h i s t o r y, s e r v i n g as a stronghold in t h e fi g h t a g a i n s t t h e Tu r k s , w h o c o n q u e r e d it in 1552 and ruled over it until 1716, when it was conquered by the Au s t r i a n a r m i e s under the command o f Pr i n c e E u g e n e o f S a v o y.


CULTURE A t W U T, l e a r n i n g extends beyond the classrooms and l a b o r a t o r i e s.
