TIMIȘOARA FACT S and FIG U RES
SHORT HISTORY
Timișoara, the fourth largest city in Romania, has the charm of a small town and the opportunities of a big city. Situated in the western part of the country, Timișoara is the capital of Timiș County, which borders Serbia and Hungary. About 350,000 people make their home in the Timișoara area.
I
T IS BELIEVED THAT ancient Dacian and Roman settlements existed in this region, but Timișoara was first mentioned in a
document of 1212, the "Diploma" of the Hungarian King Andrew II. Since 1342 it has been referred to as a town;
The city has had a turbulent history, being the
last rampart against the Turks, who conquered it in 1552, ruling until 1716, when it was conquered by the Austrian armies under the command of Prince Eugene of Savoy;
During the 19th century, Timișoara underwent
important industrial development. It was the first European city to introduce electrical street lighting in 1884. Later that decade, in 1899, electric trams also appeared. Through continuous progress, Timișoara has emerged as a modern industrial city;
In 1989, Timișoara was the first city to rise
against the communist regime, a revolution that soon spread to other cities and led to important political changes in the country;
At present, the economy of Timișoara is based
on the principles of market economy.

Because of the temperate climate, recreational outdoor activities take place all year round. Facilities for winter sports are also available within a short distance from the city.
The city is an important academic centre where
students may chose from the courses of four public universities: the West University of Timișoara, the Polytechnic University, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the “Banat” University of Agricultural Sciences;

E ARE ART ON, a group of students who graduated from the West University of Timișoara, Faculty of Arts and Design. Our goal is to bring something
new in the artistic cultural life of Timișoara. We like innovative, professional, mental and experimental things, which we want to promote.
We intend to organize cultural events in which:
• to bring together young artists whose message deserves to
be made public;
• to create a relaxing cultural environment in which we
openly talk about the current topics in the world of arts;
• to inform students about the various opportunities of
promoting their work;
We are open to anyone who shares our ideas and invite you to
