We pray every week for the Jewish Friendship Ministry. I suggest our partners to pray from July 30 to August 5 for Alexander Vashchinin who is Pastor in Ukraine and the leader of the Jewish ministry for the EuroAsia Division, which include all the republics of the former Soviet Union except the Baltic countries. Let’s pray for his ministry and his family.

Tish’a B’av, or the 9th of Av
Parasha Devarim, always occurs the week before Tish’a B’Av (9th of Av) August 1, 2017. The Rambam (Maimonides) lists five tragedies that occurred on Tish’a B’Av: 1. The spies returned with a negative report about the Land of Israel. 2. The destruction of the two Temples. 3. The destruction of Betar with the massacre of thousands of Jews. 4. On the 9th of Av, Jerusalem was plowed over like a field by the Roman governor of Judea, Turnus Rufus. 5. The Jews of England expelled in 1290. In addition of these events listed by the Rambam, we can add: 6. Pope Urban ii declared the First Crusade. Tens of thousands of Jews were killed, and many Jewish communities obliterated. 7. The Jews of Spain were expelled in 1492. 8. World War I broke out on Tish’a B’Av in 1914 when Russia declared war on Germany. German resentment from the war set the stage for the Holocaust. 9. In the early hours of July 23rd 1942 (9th of Av), the first Jews from the Warsaw ghetto were loaded onto a train of sixty closed cars. 10. On that very same day the first killings started at Treblinka. We understand that this day is a day of fast for the Jewish people.
Training in Romania
Richard Elofer had the privilege to be in Romania to teach about the Jewish people and to train people for this ministry from July 23 to 28. Romania, was one of the great Jewish country in Europe before the Second World War, we remember that one the great survivor and witness of the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel, was born in Romania, and received a Nobel Price for his writings. The specificity of Romania is that it is the largest Adventist country in Europe, the Romanian people have been very receptive to the Adventist message, the Shabbat and health message which promote to follow, as the Jews do, the sanitary mitzvot of the Torah. The Romanian Union organizes every year a camp meeting in the country side of Romania for people who are interested to learn more about the Bible, and they specially invited people who are discovering the Bible through their Bible Correspondence Course. Thus about 80 people attended this session of Camp meeting from July 23 to 28. The seminars were given every morning, teaching the history of the Jewish people, the relation between Israel and Jesus, the Jewishness of the gospel, especially the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts, the messianic prophecy and specially the 70 weeks of Daniel 9, and our mission to the Jews.

Moshe reviews the mitzvot, stressing the change of lifestyle they are about to undergo: from the supernatural existence of the desert under Moshe’s guidance to the apparently natural life they will experience under Yehoshua’s leadership in the Land. The central theme this week is the sin of the spies, the meraglim. The parasha opens with Moshe alluding to the sins of the previous generation who died in the desert. He describes what would have happened if they had not sinned by sending spies into Eretz Israel. Hashem would have given them without a fight all the land from

Deuteronomy 1:1 - 3:22 A Friendly Moshe
W
e start this week to study the last book of the Torah, called Deuteronomy and Devarim in Hebrew. This book is the last sermon that Moshe gave to Israel before dying. According to the Jewish tradition, this sermon has been delivered for the last 37 days before the death of Moshe. The first verse seems to be just a geographical indication, but it is much more than that. “These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.” (Deuteronomy 1:1). This book reports the words that Moshe preached to Israel beyond the Jordan, just before they crossed the Jordan river and to conquer the promise land. Why Moshe mentioned the following locations: Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab? Each one of this location, which are not closed to the Jordan River and Jericho are referring to some events of the people of Israel. Even though these locations are not given to the correct order, Rashi explains
2
that Chazeirot refers to Korach’s rebellion, which took place near Chazeirot. He affirms too that Di-zahav, which is not a place but literally means “abundance of gold,” it is a reference to the golden calf, which Israel made from the gold with which Hashem blessed them when they left Egypt. Paran is a reference to the spies, who were sent after they journeyed from Chazeirot and encamped in Paran (Numbers 12:16). Tophel is a reference to the words shetaflu — they slandered — the manna which is Lavan — white — and they said, “our soul is disgusted with the insubstantial food” (Numbers 21:5). Each of these places are referring to a rebellion of Israel or a leader of Israel. In these sermons, Moses will recall to Israel all the blessings but also he will rebuke them about the negative experiences of Israel. However, it is clear that we are ready to accept some reproaches from someone, when they come from a friend, that is why at the beginning of this book, he introduced also himself as a friend of Israel who fought the enemies of Israel: “after he had defeated
Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab,” (Deuteronomy 1:4–5). Moses is a hero, he has defeated the king of the Amorites, and the king of Bashan. Thus he is ready to explain again the Torah to Israel.
Moses’s blessings
S
tarting his sermons, Moses wants to bless Israel, that is why he wrote: “The L-rd your G-d has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven.” (Deuteronomy 1:10–11), the first statement of Moshe is to recognize that G-d has fulfilled the promise made to Abraham: “I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore.” (Genesis 22:17), it is interesting that G-d gave two illustrations or metaphors for his blessings, the “stars of heaven” and the “sand on the seashore.” Why Moshe has chosen to compare Israel to the “stars of heaven” and not to “sand of the seashore?” Even though the

Parasha Overview: Devarim
his Parasha begins the last of the Five Books of The Torah, sefer Devarim. This Book is also called Mishneh Torah, “Repetition of the Torah” (hence the Greek/ English title Deuteronomy). Sefer Devarim relates what Moshe told Bnei Israel during the last five weeks of his life, as they prepared to cross the Jordan into Eretz Israel.
“These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel on the east bank of the Jordan, in the desert [and] in the Aravah, near Suf, in the vicinity of Paran, Tofel, Lavan, Chatzeroth and Di Zahav.” (Deuteronomy 1:1)
Parasha for this Week
first characteristics of these illustrations is that they are so numerous that we cannot count them. There Billions of Billions of Billions of grain of sand on the seashore and there are billions of stars in the billions of galaxies in the universe, but there is a great difference between these two illustrations: each grain of sand sticks to the other to form beautiful beaches, while stars are separated from one another by great distances to form galaxies and the canopy of heavens. These two metaphors are beautiful and even though they illustrate the great blessings of G-d, they can also illustrate the situation of G-d’s people, when they are united together around their G-d and the Torah they are the sand on the seashore, but when they are separated, divided, and lack of unity they are the stars of heaven and they really need a miracle from the Almighty to be united together again. We have the metaphor of the sand describing the unity of the Canaanites fighting Israel during the time of Joshua: “to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill
country, and the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpah. And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.” (Joshua 11:3–5), here their numbers is not like the “stars of heaven” but like the “sand on the seashore” and the text emphasizes their unity “these kings joined their forces” and they “encamped together.” It would be certainly better for Moses to compare Israel beyond the Jordan river to the sand on the seashore than to the stars of heaven, but Israel has not been united during their journey in the wilderness, they were divided, they were in conflict with Moses and their G-d. Moses pronounced then his blessing upon them: “May the L-rd, the G-d of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!” (Deuteronomy 1:11), he compared them the “stars of heaven” but this number is not enough, that is the evidence, that there
was a hidden message behind the metaphor of the “stars of heaven” now he wants them to multiply, how much “a thousand times” in Hebrew he could say Elef pa’am, which means “a thousand times” but he said “elef pe’amim’ which is much more than “a thousand times” according to the midrash rabbah quoted by Rabbi Moshe Bogomilsky: The Midrash Rabbah (1:13) writes, “If we look [well] into the blessings of Moshe, we shall find that they contain blessings from one end of the world to the other. This is evident from the words ‘elef pe’amim;’ in the plural, in lieu of elef pa’am in singular, which indicates an astronomical figure, not simply ‘a thousand times’.” We remember that according to the census Israel has done recently, they were more than 600,000 men from 20 to 60, if we count the women, the children, and the elderly we are between 2 to 3 millions people. Blessing them to multiply “a thousand time” would means that Israel would be 2 to 3 billions of people, but “thousand times” elef pe’amim is an incredible number, that is why the midrash says that this blessings “contain blessings from one

the Mediterranean to the Euphrates, including the lands of Ammon, Moav and Edom. He details the subtle sins that culminate in the sin of the spies, and reviews at length this incident and its results. The entire generation would die in the desert; Moshe would not enter Eretz Yisrael. He reminds them that their immediate reaction to Hashem’s decree was to want to “go up and fight” to redress the sin. He recounts how they would not listen when he told them not to go, that they no longer merited vanquishing their enemies miraculously. They ignored him and suffered a massive defeat. They were not allowed to fight with the kingdoms of Esav, Moav or Ammon these lands were not to be part of the map of Eretz Israel in the meantime. When the conquest of Canaan will begin with Sichon and Og, it will be via natural warfare
T
uesday will be the day of Tish’a Be’av (9th of Av), the very date of the destruction of the temples of Jerusalem. Both temples were destroyed on the same day but the second more than 650 years after the first one. The Haftara continues to give the reasons of the destruction of Jerusalem. “I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. The ox knows its owner, and the donkey its master’s crib; but Israel does not know, my people do not understand” (Isaiah 1:3). The L-rd is so upset with Israel that he call her Gomorrah “Listen to the teaching of our G-d, you people of Gomorrah!” (10) The Almighty said to Israel that he did not like their sacrifices “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the L-RD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats” (11). If the L-rd does not like anymore Israel’ sacrifice, it is not because G-d is against sacrifices but just because Israel’s ceremonies have lost their significance for Israel and became just rituals. That’s why the L-rd does not like not only sacrifice but also Sabbath and feasts “bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation—I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; ” (13-14). The

end of the world to the other,” this blessing is a call to Israel to play his role in this world, to be a missionary (a light) to the nations in order to help them to accept the only one G-d of the universe and to convert to Him, and then to cover the earth with the knowledge of G-d. This is the only way to understand these blessings, because the land of Israel was already too short for this population and would be even smaller is they multiply for “a thousand time” or “thousand times”
We Must Stand United
I
n this Parasha Moshe recalls the story of the spies. “Then all of you came near me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may explore the land” (Deuteronomy 1:22) After scouting the land for 40 days, the spies returned with a negative report about the promised land. The people were so affected, that they refused to enter the land. G-d punished them by decreeing that the generation pass away in the desert. Parashat Devarim is always read on the Shabbat before the fast of Tisha B’Av (Av 9), which this year will be on August 1. How is this story related to the events of Tisha B’Av? According to the Jewish tradition, the spies returned on Tisha B’Av
4
and Israel’s refusal to enter the Holy Land took place on Tisha B’Av. According to the Jewish tradition, the second Temple was destroyed as the result of strife amongst Jews. Not to repeat the same sin, we must demonstrate great love and unity.
Ammonites and Moabites
T
he Torah states, Then the L-rd said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.” (Deut 2:9). After forty long years in the desert, the people of Israel were almost ready to conquer the Holy Land. But there were complications. Two of their most formidable enemies were untouchable. The Torah forbade the Jewish people to attack the nations of Ammon and Moav. They had to circle around to the north even though the direct path of invasion led through the lands of these two nations. The Torah did, however, allow Israel invaders to make threats and intimidate Moav, as long as they stopped short of actual combat. Why was this special protection granted to these two implacable foes of
Israel? We remember that they were descendants of Lot. Rabbi Naftali Reich says that Our Sages find the answer in an incident that took place five centuries earlier. During a period of famine, the Hebrew patriarch Abraham, his beautiful wife Sarah and his nephew Lot went to seek food in Egypt. The pharaoh at that time had a roving eye. Whenever a beautiful woman caught his fancy, he would kill her husband and take her into his harem. Sarah caught his fancy, which led him to focus on Abraham, who had escorted her to Egypt. Had he known Abraham was her husband, he would have killed him on the spot, but Abraham claimed he was her brother and was spared. Lot was standing there when Abraham represented himself to the pharaoh as Sarah’s brother. If Lot had said one word or made one gesture to arouse the pharaoh’s suspicions, Abraham would have been doomed. But Lot remained silent, and the pharaoh accepted Abraham’s story. The Torah rewarded Lot by forbidding the Jewish people to attack Lot’s descendants, the nations of Ammon and Moav.
Moshe started his fifth book, the book Devarim (Deuteronomy) by recalling the history of Israel in the wilderness. It is very important to remember the past in order to avoid repeating the same mistakes, that is why Rabbi Shaul affirms “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. G-d is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:11–13). Everything has been written “for our instruction”, through instruction we acquire some knowledge. G-d wants us to learn that he is protecting his people. this learning is very important for us, because we are very close to the end, and Rabbi shaul helps us in his text to understand, that these instructions have been given especially for those who are living at the end of time “the end of the ages has come.” All the trouble and temptations of Israel happened because they did not trust G-d. Even the length of their journey in the wilderness could have been much shorter. Two years after the Exodus, they could have been ready to enter Canaan and to start their installation in the Promised Land, but as Moshe informed us in the parasha Devarim the people of Israel asked him to send explorer to the Land (Deuteronomy 1:22). They did not trust G-d and be-
cause of this lack of faith, G-d postponed the conquest of Canaan for 38 years. The lesson to learn from the narration of Israel in the wilderness is that all of us, we are tempted one day to do something wrong, temptations are inherent to human nature. But failure is not an obligation; it is not a necessity, especially for believers in Yeshua. Rabbi Shaul affirms our protection: “G-d is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability”, each one of us has a different ability to resist temptation, and since G-d knows individually each one of us, he knows our limits and according to Shaul he will not let us be tempted beyond our ability. We can understand this point when we look at the temptations of Yeshua. Even though he was the Mashiach, he was tempted in the wilderness. Right after his immersion in the Jordan river, we read: “Then Yeshua was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” (Matthew 4:1). The temptation of Yeshua were very special, the first one was: “If you are the Son of G-d, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” (Matthew 4:3), the second one was “Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of G-d, throw yourself down,” (Matthew 4:5–6) Looking just at these two temptations, we understand that each one is tempted according to his ability to get victory. The devil will never ask us to change stones in loaves of bread, because we don’t have this power, Yeshua had it, he was G-d on earth and had the
capacity to do it. That is why for him this temptation was a real temptation even though it will never be a temptation for us. The same is true with the second and third temptation of Yeshua, they were specially for him. There is another point I would like to underline, it is written that Yeshua was tempted by the devil, many Jews today refuse to recognize that the devil exist, and they attribute to G-d everything, good and bad. But the apostolic writings are clear, the devil exist, and it is this character called Satan who send evil and temptations, that is why the disciple Yaakov said “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by G-d,’ for G-d cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:13–15), It is important for us to think carefully about what we think and our desires. G-d is protecting us, but he will always give us freedom. If we want to go in the direction of evil, he will accept it but we will get the consequence of our actions. Let’s remember that even though one day we would be tempted beyond our ability, we have the good news that G-d knows how we can escape the temptation. As Shaul put it “but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13). What a good news for each one of us!

L-rd never lose hope, his people is still his people, “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, ” (16). It is a call to repentance “Come now” (18). The L-rd is a G-d full of forgiveness and love for his people “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land” (19-20). Whatever Israel done in the past, G-d is willing to forgive. However, if the people don’t want to repent and to ask forgiveness, the L-rd will not be able to bless them and they will fall under the rules of other power as Babylon and many others. The text ends with a positive statement, “I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city. Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness” (2627).

Inspirational Corner v The book of Deu-
teronomy should be carefully studied by those living on the earth today. It contains a record of the instruction given to Moses to give to the children of Israel. In it the law is repeated.... The law of G-d was often to be repeated to Israel. That it precepts might not be forgotten, it was to be kept before the people, and was ever to be exalted and honored. Parents were to read the law to their children, teaching it to them line upon line, precept upon precept. And on public occasions the law was to be read in the hearing of all the people. (1BC 1117)

t is related that the king of Persia was very impressed with the person who created the game of chess and offered to grant him any wish. The man said to the king, “There are 64 squares on the chess board. I would be satisfied if you would put a grain of wheat in the first square and double in the next, and so forth.” The king laughed about this meager request, but soon realized that he would not have enough wheat in his country to fill the request. In the second square there would be two grains, in the third square there would be four. In the tenth square there would be 512, in the twenty-first there would be over a million, and in the thirty-first there would be over a billion.

story is told about Reuven who spread a rumor that Shimon was a thief. Shimon brought him before the Rabbi and it was ruled that on Shabbat morning, Reuven was to publicly announce, “What I said about that Shimon is a thief is a lie.” On Shabbat morning Reuven ascended to the podium and announced as ordered, “What I said that Shimon is a thief is a lie?!” (with a question intonation) Shimon immediately ran to the Rabbi exclaiming, “Rabbi, this announcement is ruining my reputation. The situation is now worse than before.” The Rabbi summoned Reuven and asked him, “Why did you do such a thing?” Reuven answered, “Rabbi, I

itus, who died suddenly at the age of forty, had given orders before he died that his body should be burned, and his ashes scattered over the seven seas. He reasoned that this would prevent the G-d of Israel from finding him and punishing him for afflicting His nation. Titus caused a desecration of Hashem’s name when he destroyed the Beit Hamikdash, and exiled the Jews. People said, “The G-d of this nation had wrought many miracles. He took them out of Egypt and drowned Pharaoh and his armies in the sea.” When the nations heard about the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash (Temple), and the exile of the Jews, they came to the conclusion that Hashem must have been powerless to save the Jews this time. Titus, and the powerful Roman empire were ultimately replaced by primitive and barbarian nations. The Jewish people, who were oppressed, murdered, and scattered to the four corners of the world, live on until this day.

one with a map of the world. “This will surely keep my son occupied for a long time!” He thought. He bought the puzzle and gave it to his son. Both the father and son were happy. However, not too long afterwards, the boy ran to his father, all excited, “I completed the puzzle!” “Impossible!” Said the father. “You couldn’t have figured out how to put together the world in so short a time?” “It was not so difficult, daddy,” exclaimed the boy, excitedly. “This was a twoin-one puzzle. On the reverse side of the map was a picture of a child. “I put together the child and when the child came out good, the world, on the other side, came out perfect too!”

vraham Klein was born in Piestany, and converted to Judaism in the city of Munkacs. The Munkacser Rebbe himself brought him into the covenant of Avraham Avinu. He had gone on to marry a pious woman and raise several sons who studied Torah in the Yeshivas. Now that he was about to embark on the expulsion train to Poland he returned to his fellow Jews of Topol and said, “You think it’s good to be a Jew only when times are good for the Jews! That’s not so! Someone who is ready to suffer together with suffering Jews that’s someone who is called a Jew. I am going with you happily to Poland because that is the Creator’s will”
