Editor’s Note: Each semester photographers at the Daily Lobo take on long-term photo assignments, all of which are tied together by a common theme. This semester, photographers focused their lenses on athletes from nontraditional sports. Here’s the final product.

“Shabash yaar!” “Bowling!” and “Batting!” are some common expressions cricket players yell during practices or games. “Shabash yaar” is Hindi for “keep going, friend!” Members of the UNM community established a club team for India’s most popular sport, cricket, in 1995. “When someone comes to the U.S. for the first time, if they know that cricket is also played here, they feel at home,” team member Srikanth Narravula said. Nearly every weekend the cricket club gathers on Johnson Field or in Smith Plaza. The players represent 10 of the 28 states in India. In the summer, the club travels to Colorado for an annual cricket tournament and trains during the season, which lasts March through October.

Mario Montoya and Albert Rosales started teaching hip hop break dance classes at the Harwood Art Center last fall. Montoya lost his right leg after a football injury about 17 years ago, when he was in eighth grade. “I feel like I lost my anger with my leg and I became a better person,” Montoya said. He continued his hip hop life after that. Rosales is a local visual artist and break dance expert. Every Friday afternoon the pair teaches break dancing to an after-school program at Harwood. “I’m amazed by (the pair’s) ability of connecting themselves to each kid,” said the director of Youth and Education at Harwood, Vashti Moss. “It is absolutely the kids' favorite class here.”

junfu han Isabelle C., 10, shows off how flexible she is to Mario Montoya after a hip hop class March 23 at the Harwood Art Center. Isabelle also goes to a cheerleading school.

Van Pexa trains approximately 15 hours per week, and plays a sport in every season of the year. Pexa competes in a number of sporting events in the Special Olympics of New Mexico, including hockey, bocce, softball, golf, equestrian, bowling and basketball. Pexa said he started competing in sports competitions at age 13, and that his favorite sports to play are unified golf, in which each athlete has a partner he or she competes with, and equestrian riding. When Pexa is not competing, he watches his favorite athletes compete on the court at The Pit. For roughly 15 years he has had season tickets for Lobo basketball, has attended nearly every game and even travels to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Conference tournament. “He’s nothing less than fanatic about Lobo basketball,” his mother, Dana Pexa, said.

During practice on Feb. 22, Erick Laight watches on as fellow players perform tackling and conditioning drills on Johnson Field. These drills prepare players to get used to making multiple tackles and getting up quickly.

The UNM men's rugby club team has dealt with many changes during the past few years. When coach Miguel Berthet came to Albuquerque in 2009, the team had lost every league match. During a single season, Berthet was able to transform the group into a top20 team. Considered one of the toughest sports for both men and women, rugby tests the players emotionally, mentally and physically. Players sustain countless injuries. The team’s scrum half, Erick Laight, is a chemical engineering student from Quito, Ecuador who was born to Argentine parents. Laight has only been playing rugby for a few months, and when he's not playing rugby or at school, he spends his free time playing the guitar. “I have been playing on and off since I was around 14, he said. “I like the creative capabilities it has as an instrument. There isn't much you can't do on a guitar and it intrigues me to find out what I can do on one.

Freshman Jeffrey Baldwin self trains in Parkour, a physical activity where the aim is to overcome obstacles by moving from one place to another as quickly and efficiently as possible with fluidity and grace. Unlike some, Baldwin considers Parkour a sport where he mentally and physically competes against himself for endurance. Baldwin recently suffered a transverse fracture of his scaphoid bone after doing a jump and landing on his palm. Because Parkour poses such a huge safety risk, Baldwin cautions others to be careful, take breaks, take it slow and “if you don’t think you can do it, best (you) stay away until you think you can.” Baldwin enjoys training on the UNM campus where he feels more connected to the architecture and welcomed by the University to train and bring a different form of physical activity.

Beer pong, or Beirut, is a drinking game played by either teams of two or by single players. While the game is extremely popular in the party world, it has slowly gained recognition as a legitimate sport and has been featured in “ESPN the Magazine” and on “Jay Leno.” Beer pong, which originated at Dartmouth College in the ‘60s, has become popular all over the world and has its own world series in Las Vegas every January. The prize for last year’s world series was $50,000, and in past years athletes from Albuquerque have competed. Coaches Sports Bar & Grill hosts local tournaments with more modest cash prizes every Tuesday, and Spectators Sports Bar & Grill hosts tournaments every Thursday.
