What to know and where to go for graduation By Kat Gomez @DailyLobo The University of New Mexico’s 2023 fall grads are set to graduate on Friday, Dec. 15 at the University Commencement at The Pit starting at 6 p.m. On average, a commencement ceremony lasts about two to three hours as each student is given their own time to shine at the convocation. While UNM holds an overall commencement ceremony, various departments within campus hold

their own ceremonies as well. The School of Engineering will grant a personalized degree and hold their ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m., which is also taking place at The Pit. The Anderson School of Management and Honors College convocation are happening on the same day on Thursday, Dec. 14 – Anderson at 4 p.m. and Honors at 6 p.m. The Honors convocation will take place in the Honors College Forum and the Anderson convocation will take place at The Pit. The Geography & Environ-

mental Studies and Sustainability Studies convocation will take place on Friday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m., however the location is still to be determined, according to UNM’s graduation website. As for the Fall 2023 University commencement, RSVPs for undergraduates and masters students are still ongoing and available until Monday, Dec. 11. Students must buy their own cap and gown beforehand via the bookstore, according to UNM’s graduation website. When attending the ceremony, students are

ject aims to help through one of the most difficult aspects of returning to school: getting started. “The goal is to make the students return (with) a smooth process, starting your application, requesting degree audits and showing any warm handoffs to any advisors, or any resources that they may need,” Barreras said. Choosing to return is already a difficult decision that many students struggle with, Gonzales said. One of the biggest objectives the Graduation Project seeks to fulfill is to make students remember that they are seen and heard. “(We do) what we can to assist the students in returning and let them know that we haven’t forgotten about them. We’re here to assist them,” Gonzales said. The Grad Project spends its time figuring out what will be best for each student and creating plans based on individual rather than collective solutions. Student needs

are so varied that it is important to take those into account when considering what will work best for a student, Barreras said. “It’s based on circumstantial situations. And so I think just having that holistic approach and asking those questions allows us to provide options and opportunities that they might not know about,” Barreras said. The Graduation Project looks to help students return despite obstacles and to remind them that they are not alone on their journeys through school, Gonzales said. “The decision to commit and return to school is already admirable,” Gonzales said.

encouraged to leave their belongings at home. Graduates and their families are required to stay until the commencement ends. The graduates’ family or guests are welcomed into the ceremony, but there are certain rules and regulations in place. The official ceremony starts at 6 p.m., but it is encouraged to arrive when doors open at 4:30 p.m. in order to find parking. Guests are only allowed to park in the parking lot located at the east side of the arena. The Pit will have its clear bag policy in place where any bags over

6.5” by 4.5” must be clear. Once the commencement begins, guests can take pictures without flash. Graduation may seem stressful to plan, however once the commencement begins, there is only celebration to be had. Kat Gomez is a freelance reporter with the Daily Lobo. The Graduation Project empowers returning students to continue their education By Detroit Kallunki @DailyLobo

The Graduation Project is a program at the University of New Mexico dedicated to bringing senior students back to complete their degrees. Students who qualify for the Graduate Project are returning to complete their first bachelor’s degree after at least a semester break. Graduation Project Director Corine Gonzales said the project looks to provide support and assistance for students looking to return and complete their program. “Our mission is to help bring back students who are very close to completing their degree … We also follow through and provide onboarding assistance and transition experience to help them come back and complete their degree,” Gonzales said. Graduation Project Coordinator Leandra Barreras said the Grad Pro-

Sarah Maurice strives to give back using her passion for engineering By Lauren Lifke @lauren_lifke

After seven semesters, Computer Engineering student Sarah Maurice graduates from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor’s degree, an internship at Intel and enough credits to earn her master’s degree by 2024. “Engineering, gives me the opportunity to give back to the community and to help in a way that I can make a positive impact,” Maurice said. Maurice’s interest in engineering stems from her goal to use biomedical engineering to increase accessibility to prosthetics after handling the insurance and cost of her own following the loss of her leg in 2010. Born in Haiti, Maurice lived in several places throughout the U.S. before landing in Albuquerque for high school, and said she considers herself a local. She attended Sandia Preparatory School where she took her first coding class and found her love for math. Beyond her academic and professional involvement, Maurice

was part of several clubs at UNM. She was a member of the Society of Women Engineers and UNM’s engineering honor society, Tau Beta Pi, where she held a leadership position and volunteered. Elsa Maria Castillo – director of the Engineering Student Success Center – said Maurice’s drive to volunteer, despite her busy schedule, stands out to her. “Nothing can stop Sarah Maurice. She works very hard,” Maria Castillo said. “All individuals around her can depend on her.” Perseverance was important throughout her college career, Maurice said, after she started at UNM in the fall semester of 2020 when all classes were online. It felt surreal to form connections with her classmates in a virtual setting, she said. After she received an internship at Intel in fall 2021, Maurice had difficulty balancing her school and work life, she said. However, pushing herself to rely on others got her through it. “The more that you have support from your community and from your peers, the more you’re going to succeed,” Maurice said.

After she graduates, Maurice plans on continuing to work with Intel while pursuing her master’s degree in Computer Engineering at UNM. She participated in a dual degree program, earning credits towards a graduate degree during her time as an undergrad and is expected to graduate from the master’s program in fall 2024. “She is very set with her goals,” Maria Castillo said. “She knows what she wants in life and doesn’t let anything stop her.” The School of Engineering will have its convocation on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Maurice was selected as a student speaker at the event. “Numbers became my language when words failed me, and through them, I discovered my passion for engineering,” Maurice said. Miyawni Curtis contains multitudes

By Lily Alexander @llilyalexander

Miyawni Curtis did not always want to be a journalist. But after her high school teachers encouraged her to continue to invest in her writing, she selected it as her major at the University of New Mexico. Curtis graduates with a degree in Multimedia Journalism after a year and a half spent at the University. During this time, she worked as a reporter and news editor for the Daily Lobo, wrote for Source New Mexico and participated in an internship at KSFR – northern New Mexico’s independent public radio station. While at the Daily Lobo, Curtis wrote news, culture and a few sports stories. Her favorite articles to write are human interest stories involving giving people justice and making sure their stories are heard, she said. “Just being able to pick up a story

for the Daily Lobo or pick up a story for my news classes was really fun for me,” Curtis said. “My favorite part of school was being able to go to events and write amazing stories about amazing people.” Annya Loya – staff reporter at the Deming Headlight and former news editor for the Daily Lobo during the 2022-23 school year – described Miyawni as a reliable, trustworthy reporter. “She was always on top of things and she was just an amazing person to work with,” Loya said. “She’s a hard worker; she is willing to do that extra step.” Curtis’ experience at the Daily Lobo allowed her freedom in her writing and the opportunity to meet many different people, she said. She interned at KSFR last summer through the New Mexico Local News Fellowships and Internships program. “I learned a lot and could possibly see myself in a career in radio,” Curtis said. “But I honestly enjoy all of it. I love TV, I love video

journalism, I love photography, writing, audio. I think the more I got into it, the more I fell in love with every aspect.” Curtis started at UNM in 2022 after graduating from high school in 2021 and simultaneously receiving her General Studies Certificate from Central New Mexico Community College. Curtis cites her family and mom as some of her greatest motivators. “Having a line of really strong women who finished school and finished college while they were doing sports or while they were doing side jobs – I think that was always a big inspiration for me,” she said. Gwyneth Doland – UNM professor of practice in journalism and program manager at the New Mexico Local News Fellowships and Internships program – said she appreciates Curtis’ approach to journalism. “She’s a tenacious reporter, but she’s also got a nice, calm manner, and I think that encourages people to talk to her,” Doland said.

ourselves. I struggle sometimes to express myself verbally, so I really enjoy that I can express myself in a written form,” Kallunki said. Next year, Kallunki will work as a middle school social studies teacher for Albuquerque Public Schools. Before working as a Senior Reporter for the Daily Lobo, Kallunki served as an educational assistant at a middle school. Both jobs, they said, have influenced what they take with them to APS – reliance and storytelling. “I think you can teach in a way that (involves) telling stories. When I took social studies or history growing up, I always loved when it was like, ‘This is the story of what happened,’” Kallunki said. Stephen Bishop, a professor at the University of New Mexico who had Kallunki in class this semester, said that the skills Kallunki has brought to class – engaging with texts and classmates both critically and with compassion – are impor-

tant for a career in education. “They’re willing to listen to other people and better understand what they’re thinking,“ Bishop said. Storytelling, Kallunki said, ultimately comes down to making information more digestible to the reader. “Even when something isn’t always a story, I think you can communicate like a storyteller if it is just sharing the experiences of others in a way that is often more digestible,” Kallunki said. At the Daily Lobo, Kallunki said, they have been able to further develop their writing and interviewing skills. This past October, Kallunki covered the ABQ Zine Fest, and getting to share stories about community members’ art, they said, has been a highlight. “I got to talk to people about the art they create and these intimate personal stories that they want to share with people ... Which makes it even more personal and wonderful to be part of it,” Kallunki said.

During her time at the Lobo, Baca has covered stories on every desk and received the “Mark Holm Memorial Endowed Scholarship” in May of 2023 – a scholarship created to support aspiring photojournalists at UNM. Katrina Estrada, the Lobo’s new photo editor, met Baca while they were working as freelance photographers. The two grew closer while working together as editors the following year. Estrada fondly remembers spending Sundays in the design room working on the weekly paper. “We’d talk about the most random things getting to know each other in the Design room … We’re nerds in similar ways, (so) we (would) geek out on things that we had in common separate from photography,” Estrada said. Although Baca is graduating, she was chosen for the UNM Photo Department’s Annual Undergraduate Juried Exhibition that will take place at the John Sommers Gallery from Jan. 22 until Feb. 9. “I’m going to miss a lot of the community that I have here at UNM – with the photo department in particular,” Baca said. “Especially coming back after the pandemic ... it felt like I was going back into college all over again, and finding other artists ... was honestly amazing. Having the experiences of the gallery

shows and having my art displayed was so surreal.” Her exhibit is titled “Unjustly Unseen” and centers on just that. It is a project that explores the unknown through the uncomfortable reality of death. “Finding these (insects and birds) that are just laying dead while people are walking by … When you think about death (regarding) people, we have burials, we mourn them, things go on. (This project) explores these creatures that have existed within my realm that no one is mourning … It makes you wonder about ‘existing,’” Baca said. In her artist statement for the exhibit, she discusses these uncomfortable realities. “It is with both wonder and fear that I capture these moments … (This exhibit lets) people wade through the unseen, and let them understand that our lives are not the only ones that have meaning in the world,” Baca’s artist statement reads. A multifaceted artist, Baca enjoys exploring concepts such as death and humanity through her personal photography. Within her professional photography, she focuses on cultural and community events – ones where she is able to be amidst the action. “She was a really awesome photo editor … (The photographers) all

The best journalism advice Curtis received at UNM was from Doland, Curtis said. “If you really stand for something, stand for it. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do something. Just do it,” Curtis said Doland told her. Post-graduation, Curtis plans to take a break to spend time with family, travel and write. The next step in her career is becoming a published author, she said. She will also continue to write freelance stories for various news outlets. Later, Curtis plans to get a master’s degree in business. Freelance writing gives her the opportunity to explore additional things, she said, and she wants to be an entrepreneur. “I would say I’m a pretty creative person, and a lot of people in my life have always said, ‘Pick one thing and stick to it,’ but that’s just not me. I love so many things, and I think people shouldn’t be afraid to like a lot of things. I think it’s honestly a plus,” Curtis said.

Detroit brings passion for storytelling to APS By Maddie Pukite @maddogpukite

With a love for storytelling, Detroit Kallunki is graduating with an English degree this December. Kallunki began reporting for the Lobo about a year ago and along the way found a love for talking to others and helping share stories. “I really like conducting interviews, communicating with people and helping people share experiences that have shaped them, and what’s important to them,” Kallunki said. As an English major, their understanding and love for storytelling boils down to the words being written on a page, and the extra time for consideration it allows. “Literature and language I love because they’re such important ways of connecting with the world around us and with expressing

In class, Bishop said their love and appreciation for literature is clear. At the Lobo, their love for learning and listening fares the same. “Everybody has the capacity to love learning in some way and love engaging in some way,” Kallunki said.

Baca captures love and loss behind the camera By Karina Bolaños @DailyLobo

The Daily Lobo’s outgoing photo editor, Jessica Baca, has always had a passion for photography. So much so that her family would keep disposable cameras out of her hands because she would use them up in minutes. In awe of everything around her, she would shoot anything and everything she could. Baca is set to graduate from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio Art with a concentration in photography. During her college career, she said she was often urged to apply to the Lobo, but it wasn’t until Film & Digital Arts Professor Roberto Rosales encouraged her that she stumbled upon the newspaper. She has worked at the Lobo since October 2022 and has served as the photo editor since May 2023. Shortly after, she also began to work for the Albuquerque Journal. “I (was) fast tracked into being editor. It’s been crazy … then I also (became) an intern at the Albuquerque Journal all within a year,” Baca said. “(Rosales) highly recommended me for the position and I was able to get it through showing my work and interviewing with the photo editor.”

Upon graduating, she will continue her internship at the Albuquerque Journal and keep building her portfolio. Regarding photojournalism, Baca said she encourages any and all people to shoot as much as humanly possible, and to find a
