Budget Summit to tackle enrollment, tuition

By Danielle Prokop @ProkopDani Despite a bump in state funding, the University of New Mexico still feels budget pressure due to enrollment shortfalls, resulting in declining tuition and student fee revenues.

Those concerns are front and center in UNM’s 2020 fiscal year proposals, which include a tuition increase, a pay bump for employees and an additional fee for technology.

Proposals will be vetted on Tuesday at the Budget Summit, which will bein the Student Union Building in Ballroom C at 9:00 a.m.

The summit will be incorporated into the regularly scheduled Board of Regents meeting.

The Budget Leadership Team (BLT) is responsible for developing the fiscal year 2020 projections and recommendations for managing a multi-million dollar budget.

Muhammad Afzaal elected president of GPSA

By Justin Garcia @just516garc Graduate and professional students at the University of New Mexico now have a new president.

Muhammad Afzaal was elected as President of the Graduate and Professional Student Association.

Afzaal swept opponent Sara Gutierrez, collecting 72 percent of the vote. Gutierrez received 136 votes, while Afzaal picked up 391 votes. Including eight writein votes, 537 people voted in the election — about 8.8 percent of all graduate and professional students at UNM. Vote totals are unofficial until April 12.

for a few days under the administration of Glenda Lewis, whose term ended in 2017. Afzaal told the Daily Lobo that he was involved in student government while obtaining his undergraduate degree.

On the campaign trail, both candidates said engagement — within GPSA and among UNM graduate and professional students, especially those on north campus — is among their top priorities. Afzaal said he wanted to set up “meet and greets” between various academic departments and GPSA.

As indicated by this elections turnout, student engagement has been a struggle for GPSA. The problem exists internally as well. For example, in the March meeting, Kyla Charlee, acting as council chair, said the former Legislative Steering Committee Chair Texanna Martin had stepped down. Sara Samani was unanimously appointed to fill the position. However, only one council member volunteered to be on the committee. Without a quorum, the committee can’t

meet and pass legislation, per state law.

In a previous interview with the Daily Lobo, Afzaal also highlighted the president's role on the Student Fee Review Board. Afzaal will not only be the chair of the board, but will also sit on the Budget Leadership Team, another major step in deciding how tuition and students fees are spent.

“We would like to make sure that there (is) transparency in those resources and fair and equal distribution,” Afzaal said.

He added that he wants to make sure students knew how much each department received.

In the April meeting at the end of the month, GPSA council members are set to vote on a new council chair.

The proposed transfer from reserves is be a 661 percent increase from $500,000 to $3.3 million according to the drafted BLT recommendation.

Tuition, fees and enrollment, oh my!

The University has been affected by sharp declines in both tuition and student fees because of a 7 drop in enrollment in the fall 2018 semester. The drop in 2018 was anticipated to be only 2.5 percent — a drastic 4.7 difference.

That’s nearly $10 million in lost revenue for 2018. Tuition losses totaled $7.6 million, and student fees $2.1 million, according to Provost Richard Wood at a fall 2018 meeting.

Enrollment has declined at UNM since 2014 from nearly

28,000 students to just over 22,000 in total 2018 headcount according to campus enrollment reports.

That’s 13 percent in five years. And it’s not over.

The 2019 Enrollment Report shows that total headcount for UNM shrunk an additional 7 percent between Spring 2018 and 2019. At the undergraduate level — a difference of 1,419 students.

For context, the one year change for 2017 to 2018 in the spring was a 4 percent decline.

Because of the decline in enrollment, the 2020 fiscal year projections by the BLT are estimating a 10 percent loss in tuition revenue — $13.3 million. Mandatory student fees are also projected to decline by 7.5 percent, or $2.7 million.

In 2018, the Board of Regents approved a 2.5 percent tuition increase and a 2.39 fee increase for all University students.

And students may have to pay more.

There is a proposal for tuition increase for both undergraduate and graduate students. Other considerations to be made will include a possible additional technology fee.

There are three proposals to implement the fee, ranging from $47 to $110. One of the plans would implement the ability to allow students to download the Adobe Creative suite, and requires funding for the licensing.

Under the proposal, base tuition would stay the same, but there would be a premium increase for both upper division classes and graduate classes.

According to the proposal with premium increases and technology fee: • At the current rate, students taking 15 credit hours of only lower division classes (between tuition and student fees) pay $3,661. Under the proposal they would pay an

additional $82 per semester.

A student taking 15 credit hours of all upper division classes pays $4,036.

Under the proposal, they would pay an additional $232 per semester.

• Graduate students taking 12 credit hours currently pay $4,471 a semester. Under the proposed changes, they would pay an additional $188 per semester.

All changes are subject to the Board of Regents approval. The Daily Lobo will be providing additional coverage of the 2019-2020 Budget Summit.

SJSU sweeps Lobos in three-game weekend series

By Robert Maler @Robert_Maler With first place on the line, the University of New Mexico baseball team got swept on the road by league-leading San Jose State over the weekend.

New Mexico (15-17, 6-9 MW) entered the series having gotten some quality starts from the pitching staff over the previous week, though it didn't always lead to victory.

But the Lobos pulled off an improbable comeback after getting a strong effort from the bullpen in a victory over Texas Tech, coming back from an 8-2 deficit to defeat the Red Raiders 9-2 prior to taking on the Spartans.

San Jose State improved to 1715 overall with the three-game sweep over the Lobos, and while the season record may not be impressive, the Spartans have now won eight of their last nine games in conference play and sit in first place at 10-4.

Justin Slaten, Friday's starting pitcher, toe the rubber for seven innings.

He struck out eight batters and surrendered just one earned run, but a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh ruined the effort — erasing a 2-1 Lobo lead dealing the pitcher his third loss of the season.

Jared Mang's 2-RBI single in the top half of the third inning had held up until that point, but the Spartans breakthrough in the seventh inning and subsequent run in the bottom of the eighth allowed SJSU to snag a 4-2 victory in the series opener.

UNM got off to a better start on Saturday, though it failed to fully capitalize on some early scoring opportunities. New Mexico had the bases loaded with nobody out in the first inning, and while Jared Mang was able to put a ball in play to score one run — his ground ball ended up being a double play and the run was the only one the Lobos were able to get across the plate in the frame.

New Mexico tacked on another run to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning, but stranded another runner. The issue

continued to get compounded as the Lobos left the bases juiced to strand three more in the third and a total of 13 base runners overall for the game.

“The Lobos were unable to get any production until that final hit by Jared Mang” That proved costly as San Jose State was able to move out in front in the third inning, despite getting outhit up to that point. The Spartans picked up three runs in the bottom of the third and touched up Lobo starting pitcher Nathaniel Garley with a pair of well-hit balls in the following inning, prompting a pitching change.

Garley was charged with five earned runs, which put him in line for the loss. The Lobos got some decent middle relief, but were

unable to draw any closer on the scoreboard before the Spartans were able to get to reliever Kenneth Waller for a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and eventually take game two by a score of 8-3.

The Spartans completed the sweep by getting an impressive complete game performance from their starting pitcher, freshman right-hander Jonathan Clark. He gave up a run in the first inning, but pitched eight scoreless afterward, surrendering just a lone hit in the top of the ninth on the way to victory.

New Mexico's 1-0 lead, which came off a Tanner Baker RBI-single in the top of the first held up until the fourth inning, when the Spartans were able to tie things up with an unearned run in the frame.

Then SJSU followed it up with three more runs in the fifth — laying claim to a 4-1 lead through five inning of play. UNM starter Drew Gillespie threw one more inning before making his exit, striking out three batters and giving up five hits along the way.

San Jose State will stay home to host a one-game set on Monday, April 8 against visiting Portland in a non-conference meeting, while the Lobos' Monday matchup against California was cancelled. UNM will return home to face Nevada in Mountain West action, with a three-game series that kicks off on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m.

(a) It can pave a path toward truth in its navigation away from evil when drawn toward the good by doing the right thing. (b) It can also rationalize evil to justify injustice. Humans often fall for the latter.

The problem is this is the only time GPSA remembers the "P" in their name (professional: medical, pharmacy, law students). Not one of the emails GPSA sends

I don't know why I have to be a part of GPSA. They need to break apart GPSA into two separate groups: graduate students and

part of the university, violates the mission of the University. It is doing exactly what was said cannot be done in good conscience: bailing out one part of the university with another by making the innocent pay for the guilt of others.

This is counterproductive. It corrodes public trust and breaks the academic promise.

In an age where money is the only value that counts, the apologetic use of mythic numbers does the dirty trick. Last year the Regents and the President heard hours of persuasive argument that would convince anyone to save those sports. Instead of listening, the Regents and the President padded each other’s shoulders for their “courage” to make – “at last” – the

“necessary” and “hard decisions” without “false compromise.”

It is perhaps to their questionable credit that these decision-makers did not know what they were doing as they decided to crucify the blameless. The lack of institutional memory combined with the disregard of the unique character of the individual sports was evident.

Five years ago the University proudly celebrated the 30th anniversary of Lobo Soccer that began with the selfless dedication of a Scottish academic who had journeyed across the ocean to join the university in 1981.

The late Prof. Craig Robertson started UNM soccer in 1983. His passion has since become infectious. The Daily Lobo celebrated

the achievement with a memorable contribution (08/30/2013).

To us who serve the community as educators and coaches, not just within the university but beyond, UNM has become a lesser place.

How shall we explain to young aspiring minds the misdeeds of the adult? It may not be a coincidence that UNM’s enrollment crisis coincides with its detrimental decision to cut those sports.

President Stokes needs to ask herself whether she wants to be remembered as “the President who killed the Sport most beloved to the majority minority state of New Mexico.” To add the abolition of soccer to her “many firsts”, celebrated by the Daily Lobo just a year ago (1/22/2018), cannot be

considered an accomplishment.

The meaning and mission of the “university” is not division, but unity. Together we seek greater knowledge that unites us in our endeavor and readiness to bear the brunt of hardships as they occur. Only then may it indeed become true that “Each Of Us Defines All Of Us.” That these words will not ring hollow, President Stokes, together with the new Board or Regents, must reinstate these celebrated sports.

UNM undergrad to present research in D.C.

By Justin Garcia @Just516garc Have you ever compared extreme wave height estimation techniques for classifying energy resources and conditions? No? Well, University of New Mexico senior Bibiana Seng has.

Seng is getting set to graduate in May, but before then, she is going to Washington D.C. in late April to present her research on wave height at the Council of Undergraduate Research Posters at the Hill event, where students can talk to members of Congress about their research.

Suffice it to say, it’s going to be a busy few months for the senior studying mathematics and statistics.

“I’m kind of a perfectionist, type A person,” Seng said.

Seng said she was home-schooled by her parents in Edgewood, New Mexico. She first came to UNM when she was only 17 years old. She said she chose UNM because it was close to home and started studying Chemical Engineering.

“My dad has a Ph.D. in physics and my mom has a master’s in material engineering, and so they were very into nanotechnologies.

When I started UNM, I was thinking I was going to go into nanotech too,” Seng said.

The shift in majors came when she took an early-level calculus course.

“What I found really interesting about (Calculus 1) — that I think wasn’t necessarily something that

people really caught on too — is that it signified the shift of going away from math as a tool to be used and into a way of thinking about solving problems,” Seng said.

From this revelation, Seng said she started taking more math classes until officially switching her major to applied mathematics at the end of her first year. A year or two later (and after more math classes) Seng said that a combinatorics class made her realize that what she wanted to do wasn’t applied mathematics, but statistics.

Outside of the classroom, Seng took part in a few student groups, including the Japanese language club and anime club. Now, she is a member of the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico’s Joint Council, an advisory body made up of appointed representatives of colleges and resources centers.

Like many students in their first years, Seng struggled with some social interactions.

“I didn’t know my roommate at all, but she was really nice and she introduced me to her group of friends because she was in chemical engineering. I had a pretty good time checking out the different clubs on campus and talking to people in the dorms,” Seng said.

Professors were another story, whom Seng said she felt nervous talking to.

“Going from having your mom as a teacher to five random people from the ages of barely older than you are, in the case of my lab (teachers assistants), to someone I

think was in his 70’s, it was intimidating,” Seng said.

Seng said she overcame that anxiety over time. More recently, she said she relied on communicating with her professors to manage a busy schedule. She specifically mentioned Chris Holden, an associate professor with the Honors College, as an example.

“I have spent endless hours talking math with (Seng), and

in her courses with me she has shown herself to not only be astute critically, but also a leader,” Holden said.

With less than a month before Seng presents her poster, she has some advice to other students on a similar path.

“Don’t get so focused in academics that you lose track of everything else,” Seng said.

She is currently looking at

Fine Arts Library showcases music collection

In the depths of the Fine Arts & Design Library lives The "Archives in the Grooves," a collection showcasing the range of the University of New Mexico's large LP collection.

The various cases on display showcase a select few of the 20,000 LPs kept

by UNM Libraries. It covers a range of musicians and styes such as African American Classical Musicians, a Cecil Taylor display case, as well as displays dedicated to flamenco music, blues music and audiobooks.

LPs, or long play records, hold importance in 20th century history, and the collection aims to showcase the multiple ways that these recordings are important.

This is not only through musical recordings, but through audiobooks, oral histories, broadcast recordings and the infamous album artwork of the LP. The display cases were

curated by UNM Library staff Stephenie Akau, Jonathan Hartshorn and William Kinney.

Stephanie Akau, a library information specialist, curated the display case dedicated to African-American classical musicians, and discussed not only the volume of LPs available, but the range of different materials hosted in the showcase.

"There are recordings of oral histories, poetry readings, speeches, plays, and artists that were popular in the mid-20th century but have not been heard much since... sound recordings of oral histories can enhance research and are a primary source most people do not consider," Akau said.

On display alongside the LPs are detailed instructions for the multiple ways students and community members can access the collection, including how to search the collection in the library catalogue. In addition to

enhancing research possibilities, Akau also emphasized the collections accessibility.

Library visitors can check out LPs or listen in the library. Akau said if a visitor wants to listen but does not want to check out an LP, there is a QR code that links directly to a music streaming database with the recording that they are searching for.

An element of the collection is the rotating featured artist, that is switched every couple weeks.

This week the musician is conductor, Paul Freeman, who founded the Chicago Sinfonietta orchestra.

In addition to showcasing UNM's large LP collection, Akau also noted that it is a chance to celebrate history, as the exhibit coincided with Black History Month (February), Women’s History Month (March) and Black Women’s History Month (April).

ABQ High School celebrates historic mural

By Katie Monette @KatieMonette9 Last Friday, April 5, Albuquerque High School hosted Nuestra Juventud, a celebration of the mural adorning Albuquerque High School. The event was hosted by the Chicana and Chicano Studies Preparatory Program and Pathway to Careers, which is a collaboration between the University of New Mexico and local high schools.

“Gracias por esa pelea,” one presenter said, thanking the audience for fighting for the mural. He called the mural an expression of New Mexican culture on the very walls of the school.

Several prominent New Mexicans were in attendance, including Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales, artist Francisco LeFebre, UNM Dean of Arts and Sciences Mark Peceny,

UNM Chair of Chicana and Chicano Studies Irene Vasquez and several members of the Albuquerque Public School board.

The celebration was to highlight LeFebre’s mural, which was originally painted in the high school during the 1970s. The mural was in danger of being torn down in recent renovations.

LeFebre was Albuquerque’s Artist in Residence from 1990 to 2013, and is a co-founder of the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

His artwork is displayed throughout New Mexico and in New York, Texas and several countries around the world.

“To me, being an artist is a vocation, but a vocation doesn’t come without community and you are my community,” LeFebre said.

When LeFebre did the AHS mural, he was a young and rising artist. Soon after painting it,

he left to Mexico and would go on to study under Diego Rivera and Pablo Picasso.

The Chicana and Chicano studies program has existed at AHS for around 50 years. Several students in the program stressed its importance to their school, saying that they appreciated the opportunity to learn new things about their culture and history, as well as the dual enrollment credits that will roll over to UNM. “We want every student here at Albuquerque High, every student at all the participating schools, to think that they can succeed at the flagship university,” said Peceny about the collaboration. “What’s really amazing about the Chicana and Chicano studies program at UNM is it’s one of the few programs that thinks from elementary school to Ph.D.” Culinary Arts, which is described

by the students as part of the Chicana and Chicano studies “family” provided enchiladas and agua frescas to the attendees. According to the students, Culinary Arts is very active on campus and cooks meals at least once a week. Through this class, students can earn a food service certificate from Central New Mexico Community College.

Performances included ballet folklorico by AHS students and the Atrisco High School Mariachi Band. Several students performed original poetry, including one student from Highland High School.

As pointed out by Morales, the AHS event was an example of what it means to be New Mexican. In collaborating with a cultural artist like LeFebre and UNM’s Chicana and Chicano Studies, AHS displayed their pride in not only their school and their New Mexican culture, but in each other. Students wore shirts

that said “somos familia” on the back, meaning “we are family.”

“Here we are today, proudly standing together in education, in art, in music, in who we are,” Morales said. “This couldn’t happen without the support our wonderful University of New Mexico, which continues to support Chicana and Chicano studies.”

UNM now offers a graduate and Ph.D. program in Chicana and Chicano studies.

Art show calls for reflection on experiences

@AmandaBritt__ Can I reflect? – A question that not only asks you to think deeply, but a common question asked in the field of pathology.

“We always have to ask during our examination, before we open up the head, we ask them ‘can we reflect’. That means reflecting tissue back,” said Alivia Magaña, a master's of Fine Arts student at the University of New Mexico.

Magaña came to UNM in 2016 from Junction City, Kansas looking for a “ground shaking experience."

She found just that working as a forensic photographer for the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Since starting, she worked her way to becoming an autopsy technician, which allowed her to eviscerate and cut to remove internal organs.

Magaña said she created the series “Can I Reflect” to respond to the intense experiences she faced in her line of work.

Through her art, she reflected on topics like the acceptance of death, which she said can be very painful.

“It’s a question that I ask myself,” Magana said. “I ask the pathologist in autopsy, but in my art practice I mediate on that question.”

Contact prints of body bags hanging from the walls of UNM's CFA Downtown Studio were the main point of interest in Magaña’s series. Not unlike her artwork, Magaña said she has a unique point of view when it comes to death.

“I always think about how colorful death is,” she said. “I get to see a really unusual side of death when I open people up.”

Magaña explained creating her prints involved laying body bags on light sensitive sheets of paper. After exposing them to sunlight for 30 minutes, vibrant yellow and pink hues appear on the paper. Then, due to more light exposure, the colors transition to cool and faded shades until the images disappear.

“With these (prints) I’m really tending to and caring for them,” Magaña said. “It kind of adds another layer to the experience.

When you take a picture of a moment your memory becomes the picture of the moment. In a weird way your brain starts aligning the picture with the experience.”

She said that the ability to look

back on her experiences with death working as an artist have helped her accept death.

“To be able to revisit this experience in not a painful way, but in an accepting way, has been amazing for me as a person and as an artist,” Magaña said.

Magaña said she hopes others feel acceptance towards and think deeply about the processes of death.

Juana Estrada, a Print Making Graduate Student at UNM, said the art in “Can I Reflect” portrayed death in a beautiful way.

“This gives a very different insight into how we think about death,” Estrada said. “It really pushes you to think about the relationships between the body bags and the juxtaposition of how she incorporates her former

experience working with them.

It’s a really great body of work.”

Magaña said there are many interesting ways to get your foot in the door as an artist, especially with a photography background.

Before she came to UNM, Magaña said she would photograph ghost towns for the history department at her school in Kansas.

“I’m going through experiences and photography helped me get those experiences,” Magaña said.

“I’m bringing it back into an artistic realm with photos. I think this is probably my artistic cycle for now.”

Guard Quincy Noble to transfer out of UNM

By Cameron Goeldner @Goeldfinger Freshman guard Quincy Noble will transfer from the University of New Mexico after being granted her release from the Women's Basketball team, she announced on Twitter on Friday.

"I would like to thank Coach Bradbury, the assistant coaches, my academic advisors and the Lobo fans at the University of New Mexico for being a special part of my freshman year," Noble said in her post.

"After a lot of prayers and conversations with my family I have decided to ask for my release from UNM. I am excited for my next journey God has planned for me. #notdoneyet"

Noble came to UNM from McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas and appeared in 19 games for the Lobos this season, averaging 1.9 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. Her best game as a guard came against Stephen F. Austin in December, scoring 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting and adding two rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

She played sparingly in conference play, and didn't crack double digit minutes after the game against Stephen F. Austin.

She's the second guard from last year's team to transfer, joining sophomore Madi Washington. Five guards from last year's group will return, including Jayla Everett and Jaedyn De La Cerda, who split the time at the point after Aisia Robertson

tore her ACL. Robertson is expected to be ready to return to the court by mid-season. The program will also welcome two new freshman guards in Corina Carter and Andriana Avent.

In addition, Najala Howell, a transfer from UTEP, will be eligible to play after sitting out last season.

Neither Noble or Washington have announced where they will continue their college careers.

Strong Aggies offense leads to loss for Lobos

By Cameron Goeldner @Goeldfinger In the series opener on Friday night, the Lobos were finally able to put some runs on the board, but they just couldn't quite find enough a 7-6 loss. They outhit Utah State nine to six, but four USU homers, which accounted for all seven of their runs, proved to be the difference.

Kianna Spencer started in the circle for the Lobos, pitching three innings and giving up five runs on four hits, as well as a walk and three strikeouts. UNM struck first, as a Cameryn O'Grady double in the top of the first drove home Aleyah Wilbon to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead.

The Aggies answered right back, however, with a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning tying the

game at one. Utah State took the lead in the second with a two-run home run from Bailey Lewis and never looked back.

Utah State would hit two more home runs, both two-run blasts, one in the third to make it 5-1 and one in the fourth to secure the win.

After the Lobos early run, they didn't get on the board again until the fourth, when they scored three.

A Taylor Jones single up the middle scored Bailey KIitzke. Afterwards, a single from Wilbon loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored Monica Salas from third. Andrea Howard would reach via the walk re-loaded the bases, but the only other run scored in the inning came on another wild pitch that brought Jones home from third and left UNM down 5-4.

After the Aggies homerun in the bottom of the fourth, the

Lobos would add two more in the fifth thanks to Klitzke's first career home run, but that was all the scoring that was in store for the Lobos in the one-run loss.

On Saturday, the Lobos snapped their nine-game conference losing streak with a 6-3 win.

Kennedy Ferguson got the start in the circle for UNM, going five innings and giving up five hits, three runs, two walks and striking out one. UNM once again outhit the Aggies, this time 9-7.

The Aggies started the scoring putting up, scoring once in each of the first two innings before UNM got its offense going in the third inning, tacking on four runs.

The Lobo rally started with singles from DeFlora and Wilbon before Cameryn O'Grady walked to load the bases. Lauren Wilmert came up next and gave the Lobos

a two-run lead with one swing of the bat, hitting a home run to right. Klitzke followed with a double but was left stranded.

UNM loaded the bases again, but were unable to drive any more runs across in the fourth. Utah State would score their third and final run of the game in the fifth inning, Ferguson's last.

A Wilmert double in the seventh would turn into a run on a Klitzke double before a Sydney Broderick double drove in Klitzke from third to push the lead to 6-3. Spencer would close out the game to earn the save.

Things didn't go the Lobos way in their attempts to claim the series victory, as they fell 8-0 in five innings in the series finale. UNM only managed four hits, and things were out of hand early as Ferguson gave up six runs in the first inning

of the game. Ferguson was hit by a comebacker early in the game, before the Aggies onslaught began.

She was replaced by Emma Seltzer who gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings. Klitzke finished the game in the circle for UNM, giving up one run in 2 1/3 innings.

Wilbon, Klitzke, O'Grady and Salas each had one one hit for the Lobos to make up their tally.

UNM returns home on Tuesday to play UTEP at 3 p.m.

NM Humanities Council hosts talk on album artwork

By Luisa Pennington @_lpennington_ Last Thursday, members of the Albuquerque community gathered to discuss album artwork and the personal sentiments that listeners attach to them. The New Mexico Humanities Council launched their exhibition, “Stories on the Sleeve,” with an opening reception.

Walking into the exhibit, visitors were immediately drawn to the records displayed along the tall white walls. At eye level, cover art of albums created by the Rolling Stones, Joy Division, Dolly Parton, Rush and Iron Maiden illustrated the sounds of the physical copies

within them. On the wall next to each album sat little black letters, telling the contributors’ stories.

According to Jodi Hedderig, program officer for NMHC, the organization put out a call for entries.

He said the idea behind the exhibit was to get community members to communicate about the common grounds found within music.

“What we are looking for is humanities programs that help build connections between people, and what better way to build connections than to find common ground,” Hedderig said. “I think anyone who has listened to music has a story about some album. We can all talk about different bands or musicians, but how about the cover art?”

According to the NMHC, album cover art serves to improve record sales and became a profound extension of the music in its embrace. For many people, an album’s imagery is just as important and memorable as the music it promotes.

“When this idea came up between a college and I, I remembered when I was a little kid having songs of Leonard Cohen propped up in front of me… and when we started talking to people, they were like, ‘Oh yeah! This album or that album,’” Hedderig said. “It’s something that people from different values, different cultures, different ethnicities can do — we all like to share stories.

This is something we come together on.”

After entries were selected, contributors were invited to share their stories in person. At the reception, light refreshments were served as Hi-Phy Records played one track off of each record.

Among the people selected for the exhibit was Paul Ingles, awardwinning radio producer and KUNM radio journalist.

The show also featured contemporary vinyl’s such as the colorful Tame Impala’s Currents and Father John Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear, featuring a pop-up story within between the covers. The idea behind including those records, Hedderig said, was to show people that the sleeves, and the record themselves, are still very important parts of the package.

The NMHC also anticipates hosting a public program, where all visitors can bring an album, and share a story behind the cover art.

Students have a blast at Fiestas

By Justin Garcia @Just516garc It’s unclear how many people attended this year’s Fiestas. But whatever the headcount was, the place was packed.

On Saturday, Johnson Field played host to the annual Fiestas music festival. Eight performers took the stage from one o'clock to just after 9 p.m. The headliner was Ookay, aka Abraham Laguna, a Los Angeles based DJ. The event is partially funded by the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico, who allocate a portion of student fees to student organizations.

ASUNM doled out about $83,000 to SSE for Fiestas this year, according to the Student Governing Accountant Office.

That is down from last year’s total of about $99,000.

band Red Light Cameras are both local acts from Albuquerque.

The event is put on by the Student Special Events, a student service agency of the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico.

During at least two sets, members of the crowd began moshing.

During Jandro’s set, which began at 5:30 p.m., several members of the crowd began shoving and pushing each other in the middle of the

crowd. Eventually, members of Jandro’s entourage, after encouraging the mosh, asked the crowd to stop.

His set was also cut short for unspecified reasons.

The final act of the night, Ookay, drew the largest crowd. Thousands of bodies crowded the stage and the area around it. The energy the Los Angeles DJ brought with his tracks kept the energy of the crowd extremely high, even though many had been there the entire time.

He ended his set by inviting the

crowd to sing the famous Queen song "We Are The Champions."

Afterwards, the thousands in attendance slowly dispersed, some just as energized as the moment they walked in while others trudged with exhausted faces.

George Thorogood tours ABQ, electrifies audience

By Cole Space @cole_space For the last 45 years, George Thorogood and The Destroyers have brought their unique blend of blues and rock to concert halls across America. Last Friday night was no exception, the band packed Route 66 from the front to the back with eager fans ready to hang onto every note.

The murmur of the growing crowd became louder as the clock approached 8 p.m., with anticipation hanging in the air. As the lights dimmed the murmur exploded into a raucous applause as each member of the band took the stage.

Jeff Simon took his seat behind the drums, as bassist Bill Blough, guitarist Jim Suhler and saxophonist Buddy Leach spread out across the stage. George Thorogood took his place as the center piece, the spotlight gleaming down on him as the first song began.

The tech was perfect, each instrument distinct and clear through the speakers as Thorogood ran around the stage, acting half of his age. Thorogood’s voice hasn’t aged, his distinguished sound was exactly the same as day one, delivering each line with his rough, gritty voice. Thorogood’s guitar playing was full of passion and groove, his quick fingers worked the gorgeous fretboards of his signature Gibsons, the black and white frames gleaming in the spotlight.

Improvisation and expression were prevalent throughout the hour and a half show, each member of the band grabbed the focus for a section of the song to add their personality. Of course, Thorogood held the focus for the longest amount of time, gyrating his body as he dreamed up new progressions on his guitar.

ad-libbed portion of the show, Thorogood sprinkled in references of Albuquerque and New Mexico into his lyrics. If a lyric referenced a city or state, the name would always be replaced with one of the two, which never failed to excite the crowd.

The setlist of the show was phenomenal, a mixture of the hits and the lesser known tracks. “Who Do You Love?” was the second song, Thorogood moved about the stage and energized the audience. “I

Drink Alone” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” were played back-to-back in the middle of the set, allowing the majority elder crowd no rest from standing.

“Get a Haircut” was played late into the set, laughter and chimes of agreement echoed throughout the venue. The show was headlined by the song “Born to be Bad," everyone chanted along with the chorus and expended the last of their energy for the end of the show.

The chemistry and friendship

built by the band through the years was quite apparent at the end of the show. Thorogood partook in repartee with his bandmates by saying how lucky everyone in attendance was, for The Destroyers were released by their parole officer for 24 hours. At the end of the show they all bowed, soaking up the thundering applause from the crowd, the congregation giving them a standing ovation.

Looking at each of the faces of the attendees leaving the venue,

there wasn’t a frown in sight. Everyone was smiling, looking incredibly content with the show that just finished. George Thorogood will always be welcome back to Route 66, selling thousands of tickets and bringing together thousands of fans.
