FRACK OFF B y Co l to n N e w m a n || @cnewman101 Just a short trip outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico is one of the largest and most significant monuments to be discovered on American land — Chaco Canyon. Chaco Canyon was an active community between 900 and 1150 AD, where its indigenous population made revolutionary strides in architecture, agriculture and astronomy.

On March 11, 1907, Chaco Canyon became one of the first national monuments to be protected by the U.S. government under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt. Many members of the Native American community still reside in the area and regard Chaco Canyon as a spiritual place. With the discovery of natural resources in the area that require fracking for extraction, such as natural gas, many residents fear that undiscovered artifacts and unearthed sites may be damaged by the drilling.

There are also fears that fracking may lead to the poisoning of natural resources in the area.

Chaco Canyon is protected by a 10-mile radius that is constantly being encroached by new drilling and pumping sites. Only time will tell if the current government is willing to lease off more land for drilling, potentially harming Native Americans’ health and history in the process.

At the end of last year, the city passed an ordinance prohibiting pedestrians from panhandling motorists or people within a vehicle on medians or busy streets. Although a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico stopped the enforcement of the ordinance (at least during the duration of litigation) the idea of the ordinance still resonates with me today.

Each day driving in almost any part of Albuquerque I pass a panhandler.

Despite the ordinance, I often stop to give food or money when I can. After three years of passing by, I decided to tell their stories through pictures.

Multiple food bags were handed out during the process and many stories were told. This may be a small project with little impact, but it’s hopefully just the beginning. My objective is to raise awareness that criminalizing panhandling is not the solution.

The Architect B y Pe r l a D ’A n d re a

Antoine Predock is a world-renowned architect who got his start at the University of New Mexico.

Recently, he donated his archive and a work space to the School of Architecture and Planning. When I asked Predock for an interview, he welcomed me as if I were a family member coming for a casual visit after a long absence, something I did not expect at

all. He greeted me wearing a big smile and his famous black-leather jacket, sunglasses and hat — a look that showcased his love for motorcycles. We discussed his unique process, as well as his belief that architecture is about a dream and poetic encounter. You can read my full article about Predock at dailylobo.com.

When it comes to attending the University of New Mexico, you’ll notice the school stands out in one important way — diversity. The University takes pride in accepting students from all over the country, and even the world.

Those pictured include Taylor Marsh, Elias Vasquez, Tori Gibson, Isayah Smith, Aurora Harris and Rohan Moise. These students are an example of the different ethnicities that attend UNM. The reason these statistics are important to me can be described in one word, friendship. As a resident of rural northern Virginia, I was unable to experience heavy diversity. Attending UNM has expanded my thinking and exposure to different cultures. Being an exploratory person, I now have friends that have lived or live in places such as England, France, Mexico and various states within the U.S. This is an opportunity to explore the cultural differences and change within myself.

B y D a n i e l l e P ro ko p || @ P ro ko p D a n i The alarms sound, hydraulics hiss and the thwacking of papers stacking on top of one another fill the air at the Santa Fe New Mexican printing plaza. The immaculate concrete floor shines glossy, and for such a messy business, only the walls near the inkwell are splattered. This is where reporters’ words finally meet paper. As a reporter, I am used to creating the words, but seeing the product being painted on crisp sheets of paper was a different experience. Seeing the ink run throughout the warehouse and finally land on paper that will soon be on the doorstep of thousands of homes gave me a new appreciation of the process. The overwhelming smell of ink and paper left no doubt in my mind of where I was.

Dance is not only an extremely emotional and expressive visual art, but also a massive community of artists that support each other. The University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance is a community of exciting collaborations between dancers, choreographers, musicians and costume designers regularly.

Dancing is a lifestyle — it consumes not only your life in hours of classes, rehearsals, techs and performances, but also impacts how you see and approach the world. Committing to dance requires endless hours of work that alter the way we experience things, because it brings awareness to the body and the community of people involved.

So much of dance exists behind the performances, in the dressing rooms and studios helping nurture the creative pieces put on stage. I wanted to depict this aspect of the lifestyle as it is such a critical part of the art and community.

The Roaring Twenties were alive Saturday night at Hotel Albuquerque.

Salsa music could be heard down the halls and men with fedoras and women in boas could be seen walking around the Q Bar, matching the Baz Luhrmann’s inspired theme of the night — The Great Gatsby.

The night’s event, “Salsa for a Girl,” was held to benefit the local organization Casa Aliento. Casa Aliento aims to provide safe housing and transitional living for victims of human trafficking, not only in Albuquerque, but also in Mexico and Guatemala.

Before I Leave

Photographs are sacred, because they capture moments in time. A photo can be archived and treasured for generations. It is unique to have pictures of people who are no longer with you, pets that you had when you were a child or maybe a picture of your first car. When you take a look at your photos, it is extraordinary that an image can take you back to that moment or make you reminisce on a particular connection you had with a person, an object or even an animal. With such a significant change about to occur in my life, I wanted to document some of the things that I feel will have particular significance in the future. I have lived in the same place for the majority of my life now, and am about to move very far away from a place that is so filled with precious things that I will miss. Through that process, I am leaving behind many things that I love and I wanted to document those things that I feel I will miss the most. I wanted to make photographs that I will be glad to have in the future.
