Aggies end scoreless game in penalty kicks by Kyle Tomasi

sports@dailylobo.com @KyTo22 The fourth-seeded University of New Mexico women’s soccer team fell to fifth-seeded Utah State in penalty kicks after the game ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament at the UNM Soccer Complex Tuesday night. The first half ended scoreless with UNM and USU combining for nine shots, three of them on goal. Sophomore midfielder Dylann O’Connor and freshman forward Ruth Bruciaga both had shots on goal that were saved by Aggie goalkeeper Natalie Stoven. Possession was nearly split in the first half as both teams struggled to maintain the ball. “I thought we played very well; we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net,” said UNM head coach Kit Vela. “In the first half we were nervous, and in the second half I thought we played very, very well and had a lot of opportunities.” UNM (8-10-3, 6-3-2 MWC) came out of the locker room with aggression, controlling much of the possession in the second half. The latter half started with a ball-bending shot by Bruciaga from the right side of the box, which was saved by Stoven. “I think we just relaxed,” Vela said. “We relaxed and realized (we could) just play.” Another eight shots were taken by the Lobos in the second half, with three of them on goal. UNM finished the game with 15 shots, five of them on goal. The crowd nearly erupted with 4:47 left in overtime as O’Connor played the ball past a defender and shot just high of the net.

The Aggies won in a shootout after four of their five kicks met the back of the net. This was the Lobos’ fourth straight game that has gone into double overtime. After neither team was able to find the back of the net in either overtime, the game went to penalty kicks. UNM scored on its first two kicks, but the

following two were saved. USU (10-6-5, 5-3-3 MWC) scored on four of its five attempts, winning 4-2. The Aggies will play number one seed San Diego State University Thursday night in the third round of the tournament. The game will take

place at the UNM Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. Boise State defeated Wyoming 3-0 earlier Tuesday evening. The winners of both of those games will play each other Saturday at 1 p.m. in the MWC Championship game.

New Mexico men’s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein said at the weekly coaches luncheon Tuesday that he has interviewed for the head coaching job with FC Dallas, a Major League Soccer franchise. Fishbein, who has coached at UNM for the past 12 years, said he met with Dallas officials Clark and Dan Hunt about the coaching vacancy on Monday after being contacted a week and a half ago. The coach said he participated in the interview with the blessing of UNM Athletic Director Paul Krebs. Fishbein also informed his players of the interview beforehand, he said. As of Tuesday, Fishbein said he has not been offered the position to replace Schellas Hyndman, who announced his retirement on Oct. 18. According to the

Dallas Morning News, Hyndman will stay with the club as a consultant. Before addressing the question about the interview, Fishbein gave a coy smile. He repeatedly called it “flattering” to be interviewed for a professional club. “It’s not a distraction, it’s a compliment,” Fishbein said. “And you know what? Opportunities will come, if that’s the direction I decide to take in my coaching career.” Over 12 years Fishbein has amassed 164 wins and led the Lobos to the NCAA championship game appearance in 2005. This season Fishbein’s squad leads the Conference USA standings with a 6-1-1 mark. The Lobos (10-4-2 overall) can clinch the conference title with a win Saturday against Kentucky. UNM moved into first place in CUSA after two big wins over AlabamaBirmingham and Old Dominion last week. It is not unusual for college coaches

to be contacted midseason about openings for MLS jobs, Fishbein said. The MLS regular season ended Oct. 27 and is currently in postseason play. FC Dallas finished its season in eighth place in the Western Conference with an 11-12-11 record. “It’s a different deal,” Fishbein said. “I see myself as an educator and I work for an educational institution. That’s very different than working for a professional sports organization, so I felt the timing was OK in that it wasn’t going to be a huge distraction to our guys.” Fishbein said the interview was not only a compliment to his abilities, but to the soccer program and athletic department as a whole. “I couldn’t ask for anything more in support,” he said. “It would take a hell of a lot to get me out of Albuquerque, I’ll tell you that.”
