By Lauren Topper The University deals in some pretty big money – the projected budget for 2014-2015 is just shy of $2.6 billion, for only one year. So where does all of this money come from, and more importantly, how does UNM spend it? “We have state money, we have federal money, we have private money, and we generate our own money,” said Bruce Cherrin, chief procurement officer in the purchasing department. According to the 2014 annual report from the UNM Controller’s website, the majority of the University’s money is generated by UNM Hospital, with clinical operations accounting for 34 percent of total revenue. All tuition accounts for only 9 percent. “You can really see that in our operations at the University as a whole, hospital operations dominate a lot of the budget,” said Andrew Cullen, associate vice president in the Office of Planning, Budget and Analysis. However, tuition accounts for a much larger percentage of UNM’s revenue when looking solely at a breakdown of main campus — along with money from the state, Cherrin said. “That’s why when the state is going to reduce our allocation, it has a huge impact on main campus and it has a very small impact on north campus,” Cherrin said. “They generate their own money.” Money generated by each campus generally goes to fund only that campus, meaning the Health Sciences Center and main campus are more like two separate businesses,

Alumni award winners announced By Marielle Dent

The Alumni Association has announced the recipients of this year’s winter awards. The Zimmerman Award went to John Mateczun, the Bernard S. Rodey Award went to Garrett Sheldon, the winner of the Erna S. Fergusson Award is Michelle Coons, and the Faculty Teaching Award went to Steven McLaughlin.

The Alumni Association presents awards seasonally to alums who have dedicated their lives to making the world a better place. “(The recipients) are all stellar individuals. They have made contributions in the military, healthcare, education and banking. Their contributions have really made them stand out,” said Jane Algermissen, unit 1 administrator at the Alumni Relations Office.

Mateczun, who obtained his Bachelor of University Studies in 1973 and his medical degree in 1978, is receiving the Zimmerman Award for having made a significant contribution which has brought fame to UNM and to the state. After 38 years of service in the Navy, Mateczun retired in 2012 with the rank of vice admiral, according to the Alumni Associa-

tion’s website. During his last four years on duty he oversaw the most complex Base Realignment and Closure project in the history of the Department of Defense. He also worked on the merging of the National Naval Medical Center into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the largest military medical center in the country, according to the website. Lobo men hit their stride during away games By Kyle Tomasi

New Mexico head coach Craig Neal said the San Diego State and Utah State home arenas may be the two toughest environments in the conference. After the challenging back-toback road slate, the Lobos will be back in their home venue tonight to face the Air Force Falcons. Neal said that for one of the first times this season, senior guard Hugh Greenwood didn’t force anything, which led to his success at Utah State. “It was really good to see Hugh play the way Hugh is capable of playing,” he said. “(He) let the game come to him.” Greenwood’s first basket didn’t come until 5:41 was left in the first half, but he still finished with a teamhigh 22 points. Neal said his shot selection was better and he hopes that Greenwood keeps taking high-per-
