Williams’ sharp effort lifts Lobos in second half

By J.R. Oppenheim For a late span Tuesday night, a tight game morphed into a battle between UNM’s Tim Williams and UNLV’s Patrick Cornish.

The teams played to a 70-all tie past the seven-minute mark in the second half. From that point to the final minute, only forward Williams or guard Cornish saw the net. The two went back and forth, almost shot for shot.

Williams scored 12 straight points for UNM in that run, adding to his new season high 29 points in the Lobos’ 8783 home victory over UNLV. He sank 10 field goals on 15 attempts with a 9 of 12 efforts from the foul line.

“I was just trying to do things to help my team win and tonight they called on me,” Williams said, acknowledging he didn’t necessarily feel he put the team on his back. “Luckily I made some shots.”

Williams has emerged as one of the most consistent players in the Mountain West. After Tuesday night, he continued to hold the league lead in field goal percentage shooting at nearly 60 percent. He’s nine percentage points ahead of Air Force’s Hayden Graham, the only other 50 percent shooter.

Also, as of Wednesday morning, his 17.1 points per game ranked fifth on the conference’s scoring list.

said he’s been trying to draw out from his post player. Though he doesn’t speak much, what he does say resonates. Neal compared it to E.F. Hutton advertisements from the ‘80s in that– as the tagline goes – when he talks, people listen.

“Now you’ve got to realize he was an unbelievable quarterback in high school, and to play quarterback you had to talk,” Neal said. “I’m just trying to figure out if I can get him to talk a little more and be a quarterback for us because he’s very knowledgeable.”

Against the Runnin’ Rebels, Williams posted his ninth 20-plus scoring game this year and the Lobos are 7-2 in those games. When he scores at least in double figures UNM is 13-6 this year.

Only twice has Williams had what some would consider “bad games,” those being eight-point efforts both at New Mexico State and at UNLV. And Neal said he doesn’t even consider those bad games.

“He’s been Mr. Consistent and he’s just got amazing hands,” Neal said.

“I know we had a lot of scouts in the stands to watch certain guys, but I’m sure they found somebody else.”

Neal referred to scouts from the Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks in attendance.

drained another three at the other end.

A traditional three-point play from Williams also came with a Cornish longrange shot, tying the game at 79. But Williams made one more layup to push and a free throw, and UNM finished off the Rebels with its late foul shooting.

Though Williams has been a regular contributor for UNM, Cornish put forth his best game this year with 17 points, all in the second half. He had been averaging only 4.8 points this year with his previous season best at 10 points.

“Once I look back on it I could see how everybody thought I would come down and score and then he would come down and hit a 3” Williams said. “We just needed one stop and he would keep hitting 3s. During those stretches, we’ve got to get stops on defense.”

Most of Williams’ production came in the second half, where he scored 17 points. Other Lobos like Cullen Neal, Xavier Adams, Obij Aget and Elijah Brown contributed to the scoring but several times fed Williams for scores down low.

Craig Neal credited those other players for allowing Williams to take over, and getting them the ball early and often.

“I’ll just say this: I think the players made nice adjustments to get him the ball,” he said .

Parade of Lights engages fans with rare sound

By Isaiah Jordan For Parade of Lights the purpose of music is to engage others through their unique rock/electric sound and lyrics in order to relate and inspire others to be empowered to enjoy life.

Parade of Lights is a band from the Los Angeles region that is currently on tour across the United States.

The band comprises lead vocal and guitarist Ryan Daly, Anthony Improgo on drums, Michelle Ashley on vocals and keyboard and Randy Schulte on bass.

The band recently signed with Astralwerks and released their first album in September. They

are currently working on a second album which they plan to release after finishing their tour.

Parade of Lights performed at the Kiva Auditorium. The audience cheered them on from their opening till the last song as their performance engaged the audience through a combination of rock and electronic style music.

“I think we had a very positive feedback tonight,” Improgo said. “I am happy they liked the show.”

After their performance the band came out to spend time with the people who had came to the concert. They were greeted by numerous people who came to chat, hang out and take pictures. The band enjoys these in-

teractions and is a sentiment shared every member.

“We love spending time with the audience,” Schulte said. “Seeing families come to our table and talk is always great.”

The unique flavor of music Parade of Lights creates comes from their perspective on what music should accomplish.

“Our inspiration really comes from everything, such as watching a movie, reading a book or hanging out with people,” Daly said. “We try to capture that emotion, capture the way you feel in everyday life and relate that back to you in our music.”

This important focus in their music also extends to the lyrics

they use. Incorporating lyrics into this unique style of music is challenging due how easy it is to lose lyrics altogether and focus on the electronic qualities.

“Now that electronic music is so big it’s easy to bypass lyrics altogether,” Daly said. “The biggest part about creating our music is making sure there is a song in it, which is why lyrics are important to us.”

Parade of Lights picked their name from the lyrics of a song they were working on back when they formed in 2010. After reading the song’s lyrics the phrase “parade of lights” stuck with them and afterwards became their name. The name generates a strong visual aesthetic that they try to incorporate

into their productions. The band strives to establish visual components with their music through their website, products, and shows.

The band remains optimistic with what the future holds for them as people continue to learn about their music.

“Our hope and goal in the future is to have the band be something that stands on their own and that people can relate to and become inspired by,” Daly said. “Right now we are a band that is doing our best at keeping this goal obtainable.”

Project comes on the heels of record conservation

By Elizabeth Sanchez A current project by UNM’s Physical Plant Department (PPD) aims to increase water conservation numbers on campus. This comes on the heels of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority’s recent announcement that daily water usage per capita is at a record low of 127 gallons for the area in 2015.

Katherine Yuhas, water conservation officer for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, said this is largely due to widespread education on water resources throughout the community

via television, radio, classroom presentations, field trips and more.

She said the water authority also offers high-efficiency washing machines and toilets, rainwater harvesting, swamp cooler thermostats and other water-saving devices.

The announcement comes as crews will begin working on the University of New Mexico’s North Golf Course Urban Open Space Water Conservation and Reuse Project, which may help contribute to future water conservation.

UNM’s Lomas Chilled Water Plant to the North Golf Course Urban Open Space.

The Lomas Chilled Water Plant heats and cools buildings on campus by sending steam and chilled water through piping, Clark said. The project will recycle water (which must be flushed from the system periodically), as opposed to emptying it into the wastewater system.

“Blow-down” water from the Lomas Chilled Water Plant will be captured by the pipeline, which will move it to the pond at the UNM North Golf Course Urban Open Space, she said. There, it will be used for irrigation. “‘Blow-down’ water is typically

dumped down the drain, and this project will allow that water to be captured and recycled, allowing UNM to pump less water for landscape irrigation,” she said.

The project was made possible through $500,000 of funding in state capital outlay from the New Mexico Legislature, she said, and chief sponsors State Representative Gail Chasey and State Senator Cisco McSorley were backed by many others.

The project is also being facilitated on behalf of Bernalillo County and the North Campus Neighborhood Association.

“This project demonstrates our commitment not only to conserve our resources, but work in collaboration with the New Mexico community and its stakeholders,” Clark said.

Yuhas said the new pipeline will be helpful and the project is a great plan in particular.

“It targets consumptive use of water... that the utility doesn’t get back as wastewater. When you wash clothes or flush the toilet, that water gets returned to the water reclamation plant, and is cleaned and can be reused,” she said. “Water that is used for irrigation doesn’t get returned to us, so we don’t get that second use out of it. While all conservation efforts are good and help our community, conserving on consumptive uses of water helps the most.”

Clark estimates that the project will save up to 14 million gallons of water annually, which would not only reuse the water plant’s “blow down” water, but also reduce the amount of water pumped from Albuquerque’s aquifer for golf course irrigation, she said.

“The UNM campus is continually challenged to reduce its water usage with a growing campus,” Clark said.

Every year, nearly 276 million gallons of water are pumped from

UNM’s wells to supply the dorms, medical buildings, utilities, landscaping, La Posada, the Student Union Building and more, she said.

“Much has been accomplished to reduce UNM’s water usage: low-flow toilets and urinals have been installed throughout campus, and to date, a total of 40,000 square feet of turf has been removed for more sustainable landscape,” she said.

Clark also noted that UNM has reduced energy usage by 30 percent over the last 10 years, despite the campus expanding by approximately 2.4 million square feet, she said.

Natural gas-fueled turbines and solar panel installations have also helped save energy.

“All the energy saving technologies are carefully planned and managed by PPD with the long term goal of ensuring that the UNM utilities are provided as efficiently and cost effectively as possible,” she said.

Yuhas recommends Albuquerque residents continue to conserve water by replacing toilets older than the mid-1990s with high-efficiency models, she said.

Yuhas sees water conservation as a topic anyone can discuss at any time, which will, hopefully, expand community education.

“I hope UNM will continue to look for opportunities to irrigate with reclaimed water rather than potable water. These are the types of changes that will make our water supply resilient in the future,” said Yuhas.

Why Iowa and New Hampshire?

And now the question that’s been dancing on the lips of politically concerned citizens for decades: who’s the genius that chose Iowa and New Hampshire to be the first and most influential states in determining who becomes the next president? It was probably the same guy who figured out how to bundle subprime mortgages.

Or related to the brewer who invented Cold Turkey Breakfast Beer. The idiot behind pay toilets on airplanes.

The premier production, the Iowa Caucuses, is a wild and wacky adventure that takes up an entire evening.

First you find where your designated precinct gathering is being held in a school, church, library or neighbor’s house, one of more than 1680 in the state’s 99 counties on a dark February night. Which means motivating supporters to attend is an integral part of the campaign, making the promise of snacks incredibly influential.

Because the Hawkeye State is fiercely independent, the Republicans and Democrats have different rules.

This will be the first year the GOP will announce a delegate count, which will be binding. Before, it was more of a “Santorum did well. Gingrich didn’t,” sort of thing.

All hell broke out last year, when Mitt Romney was declared the winner, but two weeks later it was revealed Rick Santorum had won, even though Ron Paul got the most delegates. This year, they promise more transparency.

Stay tuned. The Democrats huddle together with people who share a candidate preference. But supporters whose candidates don’t cross a viability threshold (15 percent or so) can either try to convince other people to join their group, or disband

and hook up with a different favorite.

It’s the Tinder of electoral politics and places an emphasis on the art of hygienic schmoozing. A pleasantly odoriferous group of followers holds a distinct advantage. People still talk about the delicious cookie smell that emanated from John Edwards’ supporters back in 2004. The following week, the action moves north and east to New Hampshire. In the Granite State they are fiercely independent and proud of traditionally being the first primary since 1920. They actually have a state law that mandates they remain first in the nation, even if they have to move it to the previous year and compete with July 4th fireworks to do it.

While the Iowa Caucuses are a game of musical chairs without the music and no chairs, the New Hampshire Primary is more straightforward. You just up and vote. The problem is who is doing the voting. Iowa is 87 percent white but New Hampshire is 91 percent. The two are as representative of the country as sushi is of Southwestern Cuisine.

Both have tiny populations and are so damn white the blue veins running down their outer thighs could be interstate roads on the map of prejudice.

These guys make the Pillsbury Doughboy look like a Central American coal miner after a double- shift. We’re talking about people who need SPF 50 to protect them from moonburn. If they were any more Caucasian, they’d be translucent.Besides, in February, climate change notwithstanding, both the Hawkeyes and the Granitoids tend to experience a little thing we call winter. Needless to say, if it were up to the journalists, the first two primaries would be held in Hawaii and Guam.

to ban all Muslims from entering the US, by buoying him up there in the polls. Will 2017 then see an erasure of the establishment clause in our very first Amendment?

Anti-Racism Day advocates action for progress

Action towards progress was the unofficial theme of New Mexico’s 2016 Anti-Racism Day, held in the Capitol’s Rotunda, on Wednesday.

The celebration was proclaimed by Gov. Susana Martinez earlier this year, and was organized by the New Mexico Health Equity Working Group (NMHEWG).

“Often times when we’re talking about racism we’re asking for large scale actions. A rally, a march on Washington, some sort of piece of national legislation policy like the civil rights amendment,” Bellamy said. “When we’re talking here in New Mexico at the Roundhouse about Anti-Racism Day, we’re talking about things we can do.”

He said such undertakings don’t have to be massive to have an impact, especially when such tasks are about whole populations and not just individuals. He cited hiring disparities and resource allocation and some issues that need to be addressed.

“We know that that’s happening and we can alleviate it by doing little things within state government, within certain offices, within certain cabinets,” he said. “How do we shift a few things in what we’re already doing to make things more equitable for all people?”

While Bellamy and other speakers at the event urged those in attendance to act against racism on a personal level, the goal of AntiRacism Day in New Mexico was to begin the process to see the end to economic and numerical disparities in New Mexico’s business and governmental infrastructures.

spoke on the ways in which New Mexico’s government would take steps to make racial equality in New Mexico a reality. Both politicians called the individual citizen “the foundation for change.”

Kay Bounkeua, of the New Mexico Asian Family Center, gave a speech on how racism impacts Asian communities and the state as a whole. She also continued the theme of urging action by the individual to quell racism.

“The best thing people can do if they want to get involved in the anti-racism movement is to really be an anti-racist, to actually take action, because silence continues to kill our communities,” she said.

Bounkeua said anyone interested can go online to take a pledge to hold themselves and institutions accountable to hold racist institutions and systems accountable or simply being silent and passive.

“If we don’t speak up, if we don’t do the work, nothing is going to change on a (systematic) level and that’s what we’re fighting for here,” she said.

The pledge can be found at the New Mexico Health Equity Working Group website.

It’s also a work of political thought because Lao Tzu was writing at a time of great disorder in Chinese history. When I first encountered this work in high school, I had never stopped to think that a sort of God or ultimate reality could be anything other than a personal being because I was raised in a Western tradition.

So when I encountered this, it was a very different set of ideas to think that maybe, at the highest level, reality isn’t personal but an impersonal collection of forces that govern the universe in a balanced fashion. It was influential because it wasn’t like anything I had ever encountered before.”

4. “The Archaeology of Mind” by Jaak Panksepp

“I think in the next couple of decades people are going to realize how revolutionary what he says is. What he’s done is identified the neurochemical correlates to certain emotional circuits in our brains that are shared not just by all humans, but by all mammals… He’s got this seven-circuit model of human emotions… that identifies the neurochemical and neuroelectrical spaces in the brain that generate these different emotional feelings that we have.

I found Panksepp’s work really interesting because he’s saying that there is a kind of essential nature to humans … He’s got an answer to this question of what kinds of beings are humans right from the get-go … He has something to say about the nature of our emotions and how it’s not all that different from culture to culture or time to time or place to place. He’s given me more to think about with regard to what kinds of creatures are we, what does it mean to live a good life,

5. “What Science Offers the Humanities” by Edward Slingerland

“What he’s trying to do is to bridge the gap to say if we want to understand humanity, then what we need to do is take into account what contemporary cognitive science says about what creatures are humans … He also says that science can tell a lot about why humans think and behave the way they do and we can find reflections of this in the humanities… In the humanities today, many people in philosophy and English literature don’t want to do the science thing because they think that science is too reductive and too materialistic. There is a tendency to think that humans are of a totally different order than other animals and the rest of nature, because frankly in some ways we are. But Slingerland wants to say, despite the differences, if we’re going to have an accurate picture of humanity, we need to see how humans… are also a product of evolutionary history. It’s kind of a second wave in thinking about the essential nature of humanity.”

Everyone at UNM reads, but the reasons for doing so vary. Students read textbooks because it’s required and instructors read because they do a lot of research. Daniel Wolne, the associate director of the religious studies program, refers to this unavoidable reading as “professional reading.” Its counterpart, reading for personal enjoyment, consists of the nonwork related books people enjoy in their spare time.

Q&A with UNM alum author Aerial Liese

By Skylar Griego Aerial “A.J.” Liese is a UNM alum who recently published a powerful memoir, “Three Promises for Jane: A True Story of Madness and Redemption.” Liese returned to UNM Wednesday morning to sign copies of her book and discuss the elements of the novel and her experience writing it.

Q: What was it like sitting down and writing “Three Promises for Jane?”

A: “It was cathartic. It was very intense at times, but it was freeing.

It really helped me to understand myself better. I highly recommend people do something creative about (themselves).”

Q: When did you decide to turn your journal entries into a novel to share with the world?

A: “About three years ago, I decided I wanted to write the book and that I needed to write the book. I realized that I told my sister I would do this and that I needed to keep that promise. And I had just come to a point in my life where it was time to do it.”

Q: What led Jane to let you out of your promise to never talk about what happened?

A: “In the end, it was ok. She

wanted me to use it for good. And this is a form of using it for good.

And that’s another thing I want readers to know: it’s about pouring themselves into other people instead of just amassing a bunch of stuff. That’s not what life is about.

It’s about relationships and leaving a little of yourself behind.”

Q: What made you decide this was a story people needed to read?

A: “Well when you write a book, of course you want people to read it and benefit from it… When I was done, after some people finished reading the first draft of the manuscript they were like, ‘This is really good. You need to share it. It could help some people.’”

Q: What were you hoping to accomplish by sharing your story? How did you want readers to benefit?

A: “Well first, some of the proceeds go into a scholars fund in San Juan College for single mothers.

Some have already been helped, and the book was only published at the end of last year. For readers, a theme throughout the book is forgiveness, and that if you don’t forgive and you hold in the bitterness and anger from the past, then you’re the one who’s really kept in chains. When you forgive, it’s freeing, and it really renews your life.”

Q: At the end of the book, you wrote that you hoped its release

would help put you back in touch with your family. Has anyone reached out since the book came out?

A: “No. I think because there’s some intense themes in it, and some of them aren’t at the same place that I’m at. They’re still in denial, they’re still in dysfunction, and they’re just not ready.”

Q: Do you still hold on to the hope they will reach out someday?

A: “I do.”

Q: What is your advice to those struggling with mental illness like you were?

A: “Definitely seek community support, or any type of support you may even have here (at UNM). You may have counseling agencies here… One major resource for me was just picking up the Bible and reading it. Also, asking God to reveal Himself to me.

That’s what I did. I was like, ‘Are You there? If You are, show me.

Talk to me.’ And He will. He won’t let you down.”

Q: Do you have anything to add?

A: “I think many people want to turn to medication for mental illnesses, and I’m not advocating against it, but unless you get to the core issue, nothing is really going to be remedied. You’re just going to keep amassing (things). On one point, I was on medication for

depression, and then (because of) a side effect of that, I had to take something else, and then there was the side effect of that. So I was on like five different things. And what I really needed to get to the bottom of was my anger. I was angry. And I had to learn to deal with that and just let it go. I guess what I’m saying is to look for other healthy avenues. Prayer,

exercise, good nutrition, a creative outlet in writing, painting, pouring yourself into others, volunteering.

There are so many other ways to deal with internal turmoil.”

Covert anti-woman event cancelled

The UNM Bookstore was one of dozens of locations worldwide that was going to serve as a rendezvous for Saturday’s International Meetup Day, an event organized by an individual who styles himself as a believer of “neomasculinity” for his followers to meet in the hopes of creating “tribes” in various cities.

Daryush “Roosh V” Valizadeh has an online presence through his blog and heading of his “Return of Kings” website, which “aims to usher the return of the masculine man in a world where masculinity is being increasingly punished and shamed for creating a … society that

allows women to assert superiority and control over men,” according to its information page.

On his blog, Valizadeh said he hoped to use his presence and influence to unite his followers through what was to be Saturday’s covert event, which will be held in over 40 countries. On his returnofkings.com website, Valizadeh listed meeting areas for each city and instructed his followers to inquire of people whether they knew where the nearest pet shop was as a method of identifying other “followers” around 8 p.m. local time.

That person would have then been taken to another secret meeting location.

According to a FAQ on his blog, Valizadeh says the meeting was to be for heterosexual men only.

Valizadeh stated on his blog that his hope is for “tribes” of individuals who have the same beliefs he does to form in these cities; that way, if gets “shut down for whatever reason, the tribes will be able to continue operation.”

The event has since been cancelled, after Valizadeh blogged Wednesday evening that he was concerned about the safety and privacy of his followers.

“I apologize to all my supporters who are let down by my decision,” he stated.

Valizadeh’s beliefs and ideals – which he has outlined not only

on his blog but several books – has generated a substantial amount of public outcry worldwide, particularly for his suggestions that the only way to deter rape is to make it legal on private property.

Several government officials have already stated opposition to Valizadeh and his philosophies, which are based around specifically defined gender roles for men and women. Toronto City Councilor Norm Kelly tweeted on Tuesday that Valizadeh is not welcome in the city, and a female boxing group in Toronto was planning on “challenging” any of Valizadeh’s followers if they appeared at the meeting.

Before making the decision to officially cancel Saturday’s

event, Valizadeh blogged that he would “exact furious retribution upon anyone who challenges (his followers) in public on (Saturday) …we have finally arrived.”

Several tweeted about the local event that would have happened at the UNM Bookstore -- primarily to warn people -- including someone who tweeted on Friday “UNM LADIES! Lobos keep their eyes on the horizon

New Mexico’s track and field team stays in Albuquerque for the third consecutive week to host the New Mexico Classic & Multis this weekend.

Last weekend the Lobos saw several athletes set personal records and hit marks that might be good enough to earn a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama later in the season.

Nine schools competed at the New Mexico Team Invitational last week. Even though each school brought deep squads into the team scored event, head coach Joe Franklin said this weekend will feature a field that is significantly larger.

Franklin called it a big week for his team. He expects the team might post some lower marks, especially from athletes that are competing for the third consecutive weekend. He said the goal for everyone will be to work hard and try to see improvement.

“Just continue to get better,” he said. “We brought them back on the 11th of January, so that’s not a long time. They are going in the right direction.”

Franklin said he and the staff constantly tell their athletes that sometimes the best performances come when they least expect them. He said it is important that athletes do not put too much pressure on themselves.

Allan Hamilton did not participate in last week’s event due to a back injury, but said he expects to be ready for Friday. He and teammate Yannick Roggatz have posted conference best marks in the long jump event in back to back weeks.

they push each other in practice pretty hard and attribute that to a lot of the success. With both athletes competing for the top conference mark, Roggatz said there might be some added intensity in practice leading up to the weekend.

Franklin said the team has been dealing with some injuries that have made things difficult in certain

events. This weekend might allow some of the athletes to get healthy so they can make a push before the conference championship.

The head coach said some of the athletes are still learning their event and are making strides in training. He said he expects some big improvements in marks as the season progresses.

This weekend will not be a team scored event; New Mexico is not expected to participate in another scored event until the Mountain West Conference Championships in Albuquerque later this month.

The New Mexico Classic & Multis will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday and

Saturday. The Lobos will remain home the following weekend for the Don Kirby Invitational.

Davie labels 2016 recruits some of the best

By Liam Cary-Eaves Bob Davie needs a break from talking to the 2016 recruiting class.

The New Mexico head coach joked that he has heard enough from the players and needs a couple of days of silence after receiving his final list of players who signed their national letters of intent on Wednesday.

“Right after they sign, I don’t even want to talk to them, believe me. And they’re the same with us,” Davie said.

“There’s no conversation for a few days, I’m being dead honest.”

National Signing Day brings a lot of attention to transfer students and high school recruits as they officially sign with their respective schools.

Though Wednesday was judgment day for schools’ recruiting ability, the process is much more entailed than a single day of praise or disappointment.

For New Mexico, Davie labeled it as a success. In fact, the head coach said it was the best he’s had since taking the reins back in 2012.

“We all know the proof is going to come out months and years down the road,” Davie said. “I think a good measuring stick for me is who did you beat to get them? And the ones you didn’t

get, who beat you to get them?”

Davie’s measuring stick extended as far as snagging seven players who were being eyed by BCS schools, otherwise known as the power five conferences in college football.

The Lobo coach attributed beating out some of the top schools to the exposure New Mexico has received as a program on the rise.

The season was highlighted by UNM’s first bowl appearance since 2007, nationally televised wins over Boise State and Air Force on the road and the first winning season under Davie.

“We didn’t get them all but I will say this, we’ve come a long way,” Davie said. “I don’t think anybody absolutely looks forward to us being on their schedule and I don’t think anybody really looks forward to us coming in and recruiting kids that they’re going to recruit.”

New Mexico was able to recruit four in-house high school players from the Land of Enchantment, something Davie also attributed to his growing program.

overall good athlete, the team will give him a shot at the position he wants, lined up right behind center.

Gabriel Ortega, a Rio Rancho native, was listed as an athlete on National Signing Day, with no roster spot listed. However, in Wednesday’s press conference, he said Ortega will be given his first looks at safety.

Marcus Williams and Teton Saltes round out the locals in the 2016

recruitment class. Williams is listed as a wideout, though Davie said he could see the 6-foot-2-inch wide receiver as being a role player in speed looks.

Saltes, the rusher out of Valley High School, brings big back capability with his 6’4” frame in the backfield. He is the only player from Albuquerque to join the squad.

Just because the Lobos have been more in the spotlight for the team’s

2015 performance, New Mexico can’t count on retaining every local player it wants, Davie said.

“I don’t know that you ever cross that point where you can say okay we’re passed a point now where every local in-state guy is going to stay,” he said. “I don’t think that’s realistic. It’s a case by case, player by player situation.”

Saltes may be the local back that will be involved in a copious amount of dive plays, but Daevon (Dae Dae) Vigilant received a great deal of praise from New Mexico’s coach.

“Dae Dae is a guy who was highly, highly recruited,” Davie said. “Very highly recruited player, Kasey Carrier like… Short, thick and has some dynamic to him.”

It may be early to compare Vigilant to UNM’s fifth-highest rusher and the man who holds the most single-season rushing yards in program history, but it is safe to say Davie has high thoughts about the California native’s potential.
