Anti-hate rally draws hundreds

By Johnny Vizcaino Several hundred protesters gathered in Civic Plaza Sunday afternoon for an anti-hate rally promoting understanding and inclusion while opposing the political rhetoric of figures such as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Former Albuquerque City Councilor Rey Garduño contributed to the atmosphere of the demonstration, which was organized by the Albuquerque United Front Against Hate.

“We gather here today not to bury (Donald) Trump, although we’d like to. We’d rather gather here to make sure that he and his reckless, hateful speech are buried forever,” Garduño said.

Sunday marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Malcom X, which was preceded on Saturday by a day of remembrance for the internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans following the Pearl Harbor bombings, Garduno said. He said there was a sense of urgency to undo viscous stereotypes surrounding the way society perceives race, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, age and social-economic status.

“Where do (they) get their venom?” Garduño asked demonstrators in his speech.

Brandon Baca, coordinator of the Refugee Well-Being Project at UNM, spoke of the countless

people in the world that have to overcome the harshest aspects of international relations that eventually lead to tensions.

“All of them uprooted from their homes and countries due to circumstances completely out of their control. This often makes you think, it makes me think, that this could have been me, that this could be you,” Baca said.

Baca said not much separates Americans from those of refugee status.

“Most of the refugees that I’ve talked to feel welcomed in Burque, my home. I hear time and again that we smile a lot and are welcoming.

So keep smiling Burque,” he said.

Several demonstrators held political signage such as “Albuquerque United Against Fascists” and “Racism Is The Symptom, Capitalism The Disease, Socialism The Cure.”

Protesters also chanted lines such as “Immigration is under attack, stand up, fight back.”

Jessica Avery, a senior philosophy and biology major at UNM, said she was proud to march with the Albuquerque United Front Against Hate and said she considers herself a proponent of the seemingly unnoticed side of the American political spectrum.

The constant media circus surrounding only the most incendiary political happenings within our society appears to have left little available regard for sensible politics, she said.

this country, right now, are having a moment where they are coming together under figures such as Trump and Cruz and they are spewing this hate, but they don’t really have a foundation for it,” Avery said in an interview during the march.

They are generating an “us-orthem” mentality that is entirely unfounded, she said.

“I think they’re better people than that, I just think they need to learn something, and I think that’s why we’re here today; is to try and

help people learn something about being a better person.”

Resource Center Fair provides much needed support

The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico (ASUNM) will be hosting a Resource Center Fair in the SUB Atrium on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

ASUNM Senator Sarah Moore, who sits on the Outreach & Appointments Committee and is project leader for the resource fair, said over the past few weeks she, along with other senators on the committee, has been coordinating the event with campus resource centers, SUB staff and ASUNM as well as spreading the word about the fair to other students.

Apart from enjoying refreshments during the fair, students will visit various resource center booths gathering information, she said. Over 10 resource center representatives will attend, including the Women’s

Resource Center, LoboRespect, American Indian Student Services, African American Student Services, the College Enrichment Program, the Global Education Office, El Centro de la Raza, Career Services, the Veteran’s Resource Center, the Accessibility Resource Center, PATS and the LBGTQ Resource Center.

“Resource centers help students through providing services and knowledge to students that cater to the specific needs of the community with which a given resource center is concerned, as well as the UNM community overall,” Moore said. “There are a multitude of programs put on by each resource center that seek to alleviate students of burdens, or at least teach students how to manage the stresses that we all might face in our time at the University.”

ASUNM Senator Gabe Gallegos, current chair of the Outreach & Appointments Committee, said

students may find that one-on-one interaction with representatives from various resource centers on campus is just what they need.

“ASUNM is full of great people that know a lot about what UNM offers Lobos,” Moore said. “From resident advisers, orientation leaders, to people that just know what they are talking about, ASUNM has a wealth of diverse information that can really help students out and has the ability to create programs that disseminate this information. So, we decided to use our capabilities to team up with the resource centers to find a way that best showcases some of the most beneficial services UNM has to offer.”

ASUNM is running the resource center fair, due to a need for a studentled push to educate students about UNM’s resource centers, Gallegos said. Each member of the Outreach & Appointments committee has

been delegated a specific resource center and have all been in touch with them.

“It is not often that you see so many different departments brought together, and I am so proud of Senator Sarah Moore for spearheading this initiative,” he said. “This Resource Center Fair is only one part of a larger ASUNM initiative to better outreach to each of the resource centers and the communities they represent.”

Moore said students do not have to wear any particular attire to the “passerby” event. She encourages students to come prepared with questions if they are looking for information associated with a specific center.

She also hopes that students gain a sense of community by attending the event.

“The purpose behind the fair is to make sure that students know what is available to them,” she said.

“None of us are immune to the stress of college and life in general. Therefore, this fair is necessary to show students that they aren’t alone. There are options in terms of social support, career support, educational support, etc. that are available on campus to ensure student success despite all that life might bring.”

Moore invites the public to join ASUNM at their weekly senate and committee meetings each Wednesday at 6 p.m., and to contact the undergraduate student governing body at asunm@ unm.edu. No easy solution for school shootings, professor says

By William Longenbaugh On April 20th, 1999, two eighteenyear-old high school seniors named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High School and slaughtered 12 students and one teacher before killing themselves in a new, unprecedented kind of crime.

According to a February NBC report, there have been upwards of 270 school shootings since Columbine, two of which occurred just this past month in Miami and Phoenix.

Amidst all of these mass shootings, which have occurred fairly uniformly across the country, there is always the possibility that it will occur at UNM. Byron Piatt is the manager of emergency services for UNM, and though he said he could not talk specific tactics, he provided some valuable information on how to deal with these types of crises.

“Run, hide, fight. Secure your own safety first. If you’re an able bystander that intervenes in a

shooting situation, we potentially now have another victim,” says Piatt. “If all else fails, fight.”

To stay alert, in addition to notification systems like Amber Alert and Lobo Alert, Piatt specifically mentioned another app for students called LoboGuardian.

It is available at loboguardian@unm.edu, he said, as well as for download.

“This app has three capabilities,” Piatt said. “One, it turns your smartphone into a virtual blue light phone that hooks you up to a GPS that connects you with campus police. Two, it sets up a safety timer that allows you to text a friend to monitor how long you have been somewhere. And three, it sets you up to anonymous texting with campus police.”

that mass shootings across the U.S. have garnered.

“You could argue that most people do not have the intentions of hurting others, but impulsive behavior involving anger and access to guns; you could have a real problem. The issue is very complex,” Olds said.

There are many considerations to make when talking about the issue of gun violence and how it pertains to UNM, he said.

“It is a combination of policy, law enforcement and public health,” Olds said. “We live in a free, open society with a Second Amendment right under the Constitution to bear arms which makes gun access to school shooters an issue. The issue is collective and needs assessment of law enforcement, legislation and public health initiatives to see what makes the most sense to treat it.”

UNM have numerous resources on campus, he said. He advised that anyone who feels on

edge or frustrated take advantage of them.

Olds said what makes the issue of gun violence especially difficult is the process of adapting policies and action for the public.

“We have more guns than people in this country. If you were to go about reducing the number of guns in this country, how would you practically do that?” Olds said. “It can take decades to adapt action into the public and get people to respond.”

Radiothon brings in donations for hospitalized kids

By Denicia Aragon This year marks UNM Children’s Hospital’s 12th annual Radiothon fundraiser, hosted by 100.3 The Peak, to raise money for the children’s hospital.

The two-day event raises about $200,000 every year by broadcasting patients, families and medical professionals sharing stories of medical miracles that occurred at the children’s hospital.

“This is a very important event.

It is our largest fundraiser of the year for the children’s hospital to ensure they get the programs and services that they need. It typically goes to equipment that’s needed, it funds programs and a large chunk of it goes to support our Child Life program which is not covered by any insurance so it relies heavily on donations,” said Kathryn Richards, associate director of development for the Children’s Miracle Network.

Child Life is a program for hospitalized children, said Julia Grimes, director of Child Life at the UNM Children’s Hospital. The program helps them cope with the situation of hospitalization, and essentially allows them to be kids.

“There would be very few games or toys or art supplies in our playroom without the funding that the Radiothon gets every year,” she said.

Grimes said that all of the supplies and developments come from donated dollars.

“Play is the work of children, it is very important in children’s development for them to continue developing for them to use play to explore and learn and understand and work through events that are very stressful.

The Radiothon helps fund Child Life, helping the children get through such a stressful environment and understand it all,” Grimes said.

Every year the hospital chooses a child to become the Champion Child, and this year it is Myles Bargus.

Vannesa Bargus, Myles’ mother, said that Champion Children are essentially ambassadors for UNMH, in that they help to raise money and get to go to the White House and meet other children from across the country.

“Mostly they’re the poster child for the year that they are chosen to do the most that they can in their community with their family and just to give back to the hospital for that they’ve done for us, even though we could

never repay them for all that they’ve done,” Vannesa Bargus said.

She said the Radiothon is important because it reaches so many people in such a short amount of time.

“Every dollar that they earn goes straight to the kids,” she said. “Nothing is taken out, no percentages go any where else. It all goes to toys, coloring books, blankets, games anything that makes a child’s experience here a little more enjoyable.”

The money from the community is needed in order to give the hospital the tools they need to make kids feel like it is their second home, Vannesa Bargus said.

“There are many days where this is the last place we want to be, but they put a smile on my kid’s face,” she said.

Richards said UNM Children’s Hospital raises about $1.6 million a year and the Radiothon raises $200,00 (or 12.5 percent) of that in

just two days, making it a significant event for the hospital and the children admitted.

“It’s a large amount of what we need on an annual basis, I don’t know what we would do without our Radiothon,” she said.

ASUNM providing new scholarships

By Alex Cervantes Education matters. Yet no matter how worthwhile we all know it to be, it doesn’t make the process of becoming educated any easier. And as if cramming for tests and writing essays into the night weren’t tasking enough, as students we have to balance that with the pressures of a social life, health and figuring out what we want to do for the rest of our lives.

Moreover, while doing all of that and more, we have to find a way to be as fiscally responsible as possible. I mean, it is honestly enough of a balancing act to create a midlife crisis. ASUNM can’t help you with all of that, but we can help with some of it. We can’t tell you what your dream job should be or where your life will go, but what we can do, we are. We are helping fund your academic journey as you figure it all out.

Last year my team and I ran with the hopes of making education more acces-

sible for students, and after some serious number crunching we have successfully found another way to do just that. This semester ASUNM will be giving eight scholarships to undergraduate students ranging in value from $500 to $1,000. The first of those is a scholarship for students in need of support who show demonstrated academic commitment. This scholarship is $1,000 and already available in the ASUNM office on the front table.

We want to help you in any way we can.

Campus renovations benefit almuni too

It is often difficult to pinpoint exactly why student fees increase from one semester to the next. I, too, become quite confused when navigating my bursars account. On Friday, Feb. 11, the regents authorized the refinancing and refunding of previously issued institutional bonds while also authorizing administration to purchase additional bonds, generating approximately $55 million dollars for the University.

Why, you may ask? After years of planning and discussion, both administration and student leadership came to the agreement that some of our facilities are behind the times. Do you remember your first course in Johnson Gym? As a young and innocent freshman,

I left my dorm room 30 minutes early to navigate the dark and musty halls of Johnson to find my introduction to racquetball class. After gathering up the courage to ask some strangers for directions, I found my class with just a few minutes to spare. Johnson Gym is set to receive $35 million of the new money for a renovation and much needed face-lift.

By the time this project is finished, faculty, staff and students will benefit from additional weight room space, an indoor running track and an indoor corridor which connects Johnson Field to main campus. If you’re an underclassman, you may be here long enough to see these plans turn into reality. Us old guys may not. However, this is no reason to be discouraged.

“When schools build new structures, the prestige and ranking of your degree rises,” he says. “New facilities raise the image of a school and attract job recruiters, great faculty and additional financial donations.”

Dr. Yourstone discusses how his alma mater, the University of Washington, invested monies into a new business school after his graduation. He and his fellow graduates saw the prestige and value of their degrees rise.

The Anderson School of Management will receive $18 million of the new monies to construct a new, state of the art, 65,000 square foot facility tailored to the needs of modern day business students. This building will replace previous buildings built in the 1960’s. The building will feature modern learning spaces with the latest technologies, similar to those in the recently built Collaborative Teaching

and Learning Building, home of Einstein Bagels. Business students will benefit from a new career services center, tutoring labs, and technologically advanced classrooms.

Smith Plaza, the large outdoor common area between the SUB and Zimmerman library will also receive a makeover. Being at the epicenter of campus between two of the University’s most visited structures, this area has large potential to become a prime destination, like the Duck Pond.

While new charges are never fun, the new student fees implemented in the next academic year will change UNM for the better. The future is promising and these new projects will propel our University forward.

So much for the peaceful and quiet environment required for the burst of ideas and intellectual thought among the typically timid nerds who get to

study there.

What next? Typically, Texan insurance sharks go into a feeding frenzy scaring students into buying personal injury coverage because the situation among your classmates has become mutually tense, what with little spats rising to the level of mad dogging, then to playing chicken and “Was that

sound a safety taken off or just a ballpoint pen being clicked open?” and little chance of escaping crossfire when the whole thing blows up in a most unconcealed barrage of bullets ricocheting off classroom walls?

Local artist back to work after getting new lungs

By Audrin Baghaie Amid a personal struggle between health issues and realizing his own creative vision, artist Aaron Trumm has worked relentlessly over the past 25 years to see his musical ideas come to life.

Beginning in the early ‘90s, Trumm studied at UNM under the guidance of music department faculty member Manny Rettinger. At UNM, Trumm worked at Rettinger’s UBIK Studio as a production assistant, and with KNME as an inhouse audio engineer. In his free time Trumm would fix up UNM’s basement studio, known then as the “elephant boneyard,” and record his first two solo albums.

In line with his unconventional production style, Trumm often created music with a technique known as “analogue pause-loop taping.” This process allowed him to extract the beat out of a song and add his own instrumentation/vocals over it. The unique sound defined Trumm’s start-up label NQuit (”Never” Quit) Music, a local venture that he still operates to this day.

“When I was starting out, the internet was still barely a thing,” he said. “I distributed my albums to various outlets and music stations by hand. I received some airplay, but in general the process was

much more arduous back then.”

Around this time, Trumm began to immerse himself in the world of poetry. He formed a slam poetry team and started reciting his work nationally. He placed 10th in the National Poetry Slam in 2002, crediting his rhythmic presentation and flow to his background in hip-hop.

After working around Albuquerque and gaining a local following, Trumm was accepted into Stanford’s graduate program and pursued a master’s degree in music science and technology in 2005. His growing insight on music production allowed Trumm to more efficiently mix and master his solo act, along with his rising techno-house project Third Option.

Trumm was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a child, but it was only four years ago that the condition became a serious threat to his life. The disorder ruptured his lungs and quickly deteriorated his ability to breathe naturally.

After enduring a long and difficult treatment process, the condition culminated in 2013 when Trumm underwent lung transplant surgery at Stanford Medical Center.

“It all happened really quickly,” he said. “I remember performing here at Tractor Bar and, all of a sudden, I couldn’t breathe. No one could really tell the severity of the situation. I

could barely finish the show. It all was downhill from there.”

After three years of downtime, Trumm has since made a full recovery and now, equipped with two new lungs, has gone back to producing music full time. His newest album “Livin’ is Bling,” a reference to his post-surgery rehabilitation, is aiming for a March release.

“It’s a positive hip-hop record.

I needed to rebuild my sound after everything that had happened in the last three, four years. Thematically, the album reflects on that. It celebrates life,” he said.

The album marks a return of various collaborators from Trumm’s previous works, including fellow producer, composer and business partner Sebastian Dorin.

“I’ve come to know Aaron as a ridiculously talented songwriter, performer, and producer,” Dorin said. “If music could blow things up, we’d all be dead from one of Aaron’s concoctions long time ago... but we would’ve enjoyed it.”

I feel like if it was a little more well-lit or security was not just patrolling the perimeter of UNM, but a little more in the campus, it would be safer.”

Lobos spark comeback in upset win

The New Mexico women’s tennis team showed grit and determination, climbing out of an early hole to earn a 5-2 upset victory over Utah on Saturday evening.

The Lobos lost the doubles point after an odd turn of events.

New Mexico won the first doubles match as Ruth Copas and Andrea Leblanc defeated Utah’s doubles partners Alexia Petrovic and Sarah Richter, 6-1.

Emily Olivier and Dominique Dulski traded games early in the second doubles match with Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley, but lost the match, 3-6.

About halfway through the third match, Ludivine Burguiere and Rachana Bhat were leading Taylor Calton and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa 3-1 when both coaches approached the umpire’s chair.

The players were moved to an open court on the east side of the facility to finish the match due to a lighting issue.

After switching courts, Burguiere and Bhat were unable to close out the match, losing all of the remaining games to fall,

3-6. The loss awarded the highly sought-after doubles point to Utah.

Head coach Kelcy McKenna said one of the serves ricocheted off a racquet and hit the switch for the overhead lights.

The players were relocated to another court, rather than waiting through a 10 minute delay for the lights to reboot.

She said that playing in isolation as opposed to being next to their teammates might have had an impact, but Utah had already begun to seize some momentum by winning some big points.

McKenna said that losing the doubles point was tough because the team had a lot of opportunities, but just wasn’t able to capitalize on them. She said she knew the team would have to play great points in singles competition.

“The core of the group has had to play from behind a lot and knowing that they’ve done it before helped prepare them,” McKenna said.

The Lobos did just that. Burguiere quickly took care of business, winning her match against Jena Cheng, 6-1, 6-0, tying the schools at one point each.

Copas, already trailing in the second set, was unable to break Calton’s serve to extend the match and fell, 2-6, 3-6, which put Utah back in control.

Bhat pulled the Lobos ahead again, digging her way out of a hole in both sets of her match.

She topped Petrovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

The schools, tied at two points apiece, saw all three remaining matches go into a third set. Dulski put New Mexico in the lead for the first time, and within one point of

victory, by besting Turley in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

In the clinching match, Olivier was able to win key points to close out her match after dropping the first set. She was able to win a game late in the second set to go up 5-4 and held serve on a huge no advantage point in the third set to go up 5-3. She closed out her night defeating Richter, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“I didn’t know I was the clinching point,” Olivier said. “I knew

they were a good team and every match is crucial. It’s definitely a team effort and as long as we win, I always feel good.”

Leblanc dropped her first set in heartbreaking fashion, losing in a tiebreaker. She responded in a big way, taking the second set 6-1. Leblanc was leading in the third set 3-1 when New Mexico earned the clinching point, but the schools decided to complete the match. Leblanc went on to beat Pletcher 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-3.

“I couldn’t afford turning negative after the first set loss,” Leblanc said. “I adjusted things and I just stayed mentally focused.”

The Lobos, who are now 5-2 on the season, will hit the road and start a six-match stretch that will take them through Kansas and Texas. The first match will be played against Wichita State on Saturday in Lawrence, Kansas.

The team will not play another home match until April 1.

By Isabel Gonzalez The pre-championship poll accurately predicted the Lobos’ fate in the 2016 Mountain West Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which ended Saturday.

The Lobos were ranked seventh out of the ten teams listed in the coaches’ poll.

With 248 points, that’s where UNM stood at the end of the four-day competition.

UNM head coach Kunio Kono said the Lobos broke eight or nine school records during the championship alone. So even though UNM didn’t win the title, he said couldn’t be upset.

“I’m really happy with the results,” Kono said. “We have a very young team who really stepped up.”

The poll was also right when it came to the winner.

Both Nevada and Boise State were at the top of the prechampionship poll. The Wolf Pack took the championship title and Boise State trailed behind by only 13 points.

The first day of competition, Feb. 17, was a tough one for the Lobos. UNM finished in 10th place with 24 points after a few disappointing losses.

The Lobos claimed the 24 points after placing seventh in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The team consisted of Adriana Palomino, Emily Huffer, Morgan Ginnis and Anna Lengyel.

On the second day, the Lobos moved up to the seventh spot with a total of 99.5 points.

During a pre-championship interview, Kono said he expected Palomino to deliver some top five results. He was right.

Palomino placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle final getting 14 points for UNM. “In every single event she swam, she scored,” Kono said.

“This is one of the toughest conferences in the nation and she did an amazing job.”

Ginnis tied for third in the 50 with a time of 22.46, a time that meets the NCAA B cut.

Her teammate, Shayla King, finished seventh with a time of 23.01, just .02 seconds short of qualifying for the B cut.

Both Ginnis and King swam the 200 free, along with Madison Burns and Kaela McKee. The group posted a time of 1:30.63, which led them to a fourthplace finish.

On the third day, UNM scored 59 points but dropped one spot to No. 8.

Freshman Konoha Shinada swam the third leg in the 400yard medley relay, placing eighth.

Shinada went on to compete in the A final of the 100-yard butterfly and finished seventh.

Abigail Wheeler raced in the B

final and posted a time of 55.40, earning five points.

Later that day, Emily McGill got second place in the B final of the 400-yard individual medley, scoring seven points for the Lobos.

The Lobos regained their No. 7 spot on the final day of the championship after several successful performances.

Freshman Mareike Foester won the B final in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.76. She reached the NCAA’s B cut with the mark.

Palomino placed sixth in the 1650 free with a time of 16:48.11.

Wheeler qualified for the A final in the 200-yard butterfly. She scored 11 points for the Lobos with a time of 2:02.85.

The UNM 400 free relay team, consisting of Ginnis, King, Shinada and Palomino, placed seventh with a time of 3:23.48.

Coach Kono said this championship was a successful one because it showed a team that’s willing to work hard and not give up.

“All coaches including myself are very pleased with how good all the swimmers and divers performed this week,” he said. “We have an amazing team.”

Strong win for Lobos in Air Force game

A fiery second quarter propelled UNM in a 58-36 rout over Air Force during New Mexico’s breast cancer awareness game.

Though the entire game was far from pretty, the Lobos 25-4 run in the last ten minutes of the first half proved to be the difference as the Lobos have now put together two consecutive wins.

“The first quarter, we kind of got shoved around a little bit and Air Force did a nice job,” Lobos head coach Yvonne Sanchez said. “Second quarter we went to the press and I really like what we did in the press.”

Once Sanchez put the Lobos into full-court press mode, the Lobos looked like a different team than when they initially came down the ramp.

UNM couldn’t get anything inside against the Falcons (125, 1-14 MW) in the first quarter and weren’t getting the kind of open looks the squad would find in the second period.

“When we went to the press, that’s when the energy really picked up,” forward Khadijah Shumpert said. “I think that was the game changer for us.”

This change was a huge benefit for forward Alexa Chavez, who scored a seasonhigh nine points.

“It definitely changed the momentum,” Chavez said.

“Once we got going, it just took off from there.”

The Lobos were able to score 18 points off of turnovers in the first half alone, alongside 26 points in the paint. New Mexico was able to trot up the ramp with a comfy 37-15 lead after guard Bryce Owens put her head down and drove straight to the basket for the final bucket of the half.

After a successful first half, the Lobos backed off of the press with their comfortable lead and couldn’t find that same spark in the game’s final 20 minutes.

“They’re a very physical, physical team,” Sanchez said.

“They really give you a lot of physicality in there and we might not have handled it the best, but you know we came out of there with a 20 point win.”

Sanchez went deeper into the bench than she had in recent games because she wanted to give some of her players some rest with no more bye weeks. She said that her squad is a little banged up, just like the rest of the conference, which is why she remarked that she felt good about allowing some of her players to watch from the bench.

“The second half was just a grind and sometimes you just have to win games that way,” Sanchez said. “It’s okay. At this stage of the game, you can’t get frustrated. You like wins, and a win is a win.”

Shumpert said it’s hard to play with such a big lead because it takes the intensity out of the game. However, she said

that the Lobos can’t afford to relax and that they will need to learn from Saturday’s contest.

“Games like this are hard because when you’re up, you kind of want to slack and that was something we had an issue with,” Shumpert said. “But it wasn’t too bad. There’s always something to work on.”

Though Chavez was able to put together her best performance as a scorer, the forward said there is still work to be

done as the Lobos (14-11, 7-7 MW) are fighting for that fifth spot in the league, to give the team a first round bye in the Mountain West tournament.

“I think I have a little more in me and I’m just going to keep pushing until I get there,” Chavez said. “We’ve got some more things to accomplish and we’re going to get there.”

Sanchez said she will enjoy the win for “10 hours,” but will be back at work as she prepares

for the Colorado State game on Wednesday. The Rams (24-1, 14-0 MW) remain as the only undefeated team in the conference following the squad’s 62-57 victory over Wyoming on Saturday afternoon.

Victory slips from Lobos against Air Force

Clune Arena at the Air Force Academy has become a difficult place to play since February began.

New Mexico is the latest victim to fall at the Falcons’ home venue, letting a ninepoint lead slip away in a 76-72 loss at the academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The Lobos (16-11, 9-5 MW) endured their third straight setback at Clune Arena over the last three seasons, as the Falcons now have two straight home wins. Prior to Saturday’s game, Air Force have beaten Wyoming, Boise State and UNLV since Feb. 2.

“I thought we played hard. I just didn’t think we played with discipline or smarts at the end,” head coach Craig Neal said in his postgame radio interview.

“Any time you can go 11:30 and you let them score 32 points in the last 11 minutes, you’re not going to win.”

Whatever late-game magic UNM found in its come-frombehind win last Tuesday against the Broncos apparently ran out.

A 3-pointer from Lobo guard Anthony Mathis put the Lobos ahead 53-44 with 11:30 left in the second half.

From there, Air Force went on an 8-0 run to bring the game within one point. UNM held a slim edge over the next few possessions, but with the score 6661 the Falcons grabbed control with another rally. This time AFA scored 12 straight points to surge ahead 73-66.

free throws, but free throws from guard Jacob Van and forward Hayden Graham helped ice the game for Air Force (1414, 5-10 MW). UNM missed five of its last six field goals, while Air Force hit five of its last six.

UNM attempted to beat Air Force from the 3-point line when the Lobos took a season-high 37 shots from the arc. Their 11 made triples gave the Lobos a 29.7 percent clip.

Brown made seven 3-pointers in his 32-point effort.

Air Force did its damage in the low post with 32 points in the paint, compared to UNM’s 20. Lobo forward Tim Williams picked up another doubledigit game with 17 points, but his frontcourt mate, center Obij Aget, went scoreless. His only contribution on the stat sheet came in the form of four rebounds.

After Brown and Williams, guard Cullen Neal scored 12 points. Only three other Lobos scored: guard/forward Sam

Logwood with five, guard Tim Jacobs with three and Mathis with three. UNM finished 41.1 percent from the field (23 of 56). Jacobs’ and Mathis’ points were the only ones from UNM’s bench.

UNM had a 31-29 advantage at the halftime break.

Air Force had two players with at least 20 points, Van with 22 and Graham with 21.

All Graham’s points came in the second half. Guard Zach Kocur added 13 points as the

Falcons went 48.2 percent on field goals (27 of 56).

The Lobos will remain in Colorado through the weekend and will take on Colorado State in Fort Collins on Tuesday evening.
