Oh, yeah? I’m a geek, too!

When it’s cool to be a part of geek culture, some still feel excluded from the community

By Jyllian Roach It’s a long-standing image: A guy, usually pale, usually in glasses and a button-up shirt. He spends his days in a science lab and his nights playing games with similar-looking friends.

While most people would immediately recognize this as a description of a geek, the reality of who fits the geek mold is changing.

In September, the Internet Advertising Bureau released a study that found 52 percent of gamers were female, a demographic that, in 2010, was just 40 percent. Women also make up 24 percent of students in STEM programs. That might seem like a small number, but during the 2012-13 academic year, it was only 14.5 percent, according to stemconnector.org.

But that doesn’t mean the transition into a more equal geekdom has been smooth.

Gwen Orr is a junior at ASK Academy in Rio Rancho, a charter school dedicated to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. She is, in many ways, a typical geek: She’s interested in science, she loves anime and she plays video games.

She’s also encountered surprising and sometimes sexist reactions to her desire to pursue a career in a STEM field. She said people have asked her how she’ll balance a career in science with raising a family or assume that wanting a career means she doesn’t want kids.

Most of the comments come from other students, she said, but she does notice differences between how she and male students are treated by the school as well.

Male students are often chosen over her to represent the school and they are the ones singled out for internships, Orr said.

“It’s just the little discrepancies in equality that get me,” Orr said.

“Whether it’s intentional or not I have no idea, but it is disheartening to say the least.”

The Daily Lobo was unable to find a working phone number for ASK Academy and could not request a comment.

When it comes to video games, Orr said she receives worse treatment.

“I tend to keep my gender a secret (online) to avoid anything like that. But when I game in real life, at comic cons and such, I do get a lot of awfully sexist comments. Like ‘I didn’t know a girl could be good at this game,’” she said “When I do play online and I have a bad game or am just not playing well, I am usually met with the comment ‘you play like a girl,’ which gets me pretty annoyed.”

Orr’s experiences are not unusual. A study by higher education website Diverse found that 40 percent of women had been discouraged from pursuing STEM careers, and of that number, 60 percent said those comments were made during college and usually by a professor.

However, some see UNM has

a haven for women who want a piece of the geek domain. For the fall 2014 semester, 1,723 women were enrolled in STEM programs, and 183 women were awarded degrees in those fields.

Kelly Lanahan, a senior mechanical engineering major, said her classes are well-balanced between the sexes, and there have even been instances when women have far outnumbered the men, she said. Professors too seem to focus on individual student’s capability rather than student’s sex.

“Professors are very supportive and pretty neutral. My engineering design teacher actually warned the boys about how good the girls were in the class,” Lanahan said.

Gaming has been a different story for her. Like Orr, Lanahan said male gamers treat her differently when they learn she is female.

“It doesn’t happen much, but I have actually just pretended to be a guy most of the time when playing games,” she said. “I have had issues when playing with friends that mention I am a girl and have left because of people being overly critical, condescending, or mean.”

Not everyone sees the issue as one of gender, however.

Alumna Miranda Bourke works full-time as a content producer for her YouTube channel, Wargamer Girl, which features videos about tabletop game Warhammer 40k.

Bourke said she rarely sees the sort of issues others have had while

breaking into the community.

“When I first showed up, people did wonder if I was legitimate or not. It was only a few months before I was quite well received,” she said.

For Bourke, male geeks often use her as a way to convince other women to play.

“I’ve met so many guys at conventions who are happy to see my videos to prove to their wives that women do in fact play games.

Many show (my) videos to their daughters to encourage them to want to learn,” she said.

Bourke thinks part of the reason the geek world struggles with its expanding territories is that original members feel ostracized.

“Geekdom is no longer associated with being a social outcast anymore. In fact, it is so popular all kinds of people want to consider themselves geeks,” she said. “I think geeks started feeling like their culture was being invaded. Not solely by women, but by college bros and the like. These new games became so accessible that anyone could just plop down and play.”

She also said a part of the problem is the nature of the Internet.

There, people lose their identities and, with it, their basic instincts toward civility.

“The Internet just acts as a big douchebag shield. So you see all kinds of horrid comments, frommen and women,” she said.

Nick Flor, a professor at the Anderson School of Management, said he thinks the general low number

of women in STEM fields has less to do with outside factors and far more with an individual’s choice.

“I had one student — a really fantastic female in the film and digital media program — she got her bachelor’s in fine arts, but she was an excellent computer science student. She was the best programmer in her class, but she just didn’t want to go into computer science,” Flor said.

After that, he said the student got an MBA at Anderson and went on to work at Lucas Films.

As for the treatment women receive online, Flor too said he thinks it’s not geeks who harass others, but cyber-bullies instead.

“There are people who love harassing other people; they get a thrill out of it. And they just look for opportunities for you to say something to disagree with and then they just jump all over you.

It’s just the most heinous — it’s terrible,” he said.

For Orr and Lanahan, though, each said the troubled waters surrounding the things they love, online or in the classroom, would not stop them from contributing to geek culture.

“I’ve learned to ignore it,” Orr said. “I love the scientific fields way too much to give it up because others think I shouldn’t be there.”

A sharp-dressed man is hard to find

By Moriah Carty Nate Gempesaw-Pangan changed his clothes four times before he sat down for an interview, trying to find the perfect outfit.

Gempesaw-Pangan, a productions coordinator for Rip Williams Photography, said dress slacks would be too formal, so he opted for earthy tones, rolled up his sleeves, added a cravat and called it good.

On average, depending on the occasion, the people and the season, Gempesaw-Pangan said he can spend as little as an hour working on a given outfit.

“I can pick my wardrobe as I choose, as I see fit, as I would like to define myself to the outside,” he said.

“Be who you want to be.”

Although fashion seems to be dominated by women, Gempesaw-

Pangan said that isn’t the case — men are equally involved in fashion.

Gempesaw-Pangan’s interest in fashion started in high school. First it was Oxford button-down shirts, then ties, bowties and eventually cravats.

He also takes pride in his hat collection. He owns a 1920s bowler hat, among many other styles.

His “uniform,” as he called it, is an important part of who he is.

“Make sure you own whatever you wear,” Gempesaw-Pangan said.

As much as Gempesaw-Pangan said he encourages comfortability, he also wishes to see people, especially men, put more effort in dressing nice.

Albuquerque is lacking in that respect, he said. It has its own style, but as compared to other metro areas, it’s not the same.

Men try too hard to blend colors and oftentimes, their clothes are too big or too short in the sleeves.

Holmes dressed well even at a young age, he said. And it doesn’t help that he is a “pack rat.”

At any given time, Holmes said he carries at least 20 different items, including knife, wallet, eye drops, a tablet, ChapStick and a mirror. If he isn’t wearing a sports jacket, he doesn’t have enough room to carry everything.

Holmes owns several accessories, such as tie bars, ties and cufflinks, he said. Socks are also a vice of his. He has 42 ties on the rack — two to a peg, and 18 more in a drawer. The socks share the same dresser.

Similar to Holmes, GempesawPangan agrees that socks are a sort of secret way to indulge. Not everyone sees them, but the wearer does.

Holmes said actor Harrison Ford is a major influence in his approach to style. He wears conservative suits but daring socks in contrast. He also has a specific shirt for each suit depending on the occasion.

He doesn’t spend more than four to five minutes preparing an outfit.

“It’s not difficult to throw this stuff on. When you tie a tie every day, you don’t really screw it up anymore, even a bowtie,” Holmes said.

Many of his items, he didn’t pay full retail. He called himself a sort of bargain shopper, as did Gempesaw-Pangan.

They both know people in the trade, and are also able to spot a good deal — a garage sale, for example. Although price is somewhat of a hindrance at times, it is still important to have quality. Even at the end of the day, quality does come at a price.

Quelab is ‘hackerspace’ for creativity

For all those people who took apart their Nintendos and put them back together as kids, for those who build things with wood or steel or circuits or wool — there is a place for you in Albuquerque.

Enter the nonprofit “hackerspace” Quelab, a literal warehouse full of tools and supplies of every kind, from sewing machines and soldering irons to 3D printers and high-tech laser engraving machines. For a small monthly fee, members have access to the building and everything in it 24 hours a day, including the vibrant community of makers and hackers that have built the space.

“The terms ‘hackerspace’ and ‘maker space’ are used interchangeably,” said Geoff Nicholson, Quelab treasurer and member of the board of directors.

“It’s really just a community workshop where folks come together and learn how to make anything they really want to, with a bunch of other folks who are like-minded and interested in creative uses and applications of technology.”

By day Nicholson, a UNM alum, works as tech support for lawyers.

But on nights and weekends, he tinkers and builds whatever he wants with a large group of friends and fellow makers.

“We’re not really a school, we’re a place where you come to learn with the community,” he said. “If there’s something you’d like to learn, there’s probably someone here who knows how to do it, and if there’s not, someone will want to learn it with you.”

A leisurely walk through the 6,500 square feet of Quelab quick-

ly reveals the projects and creative uses of materials that happen there on a regular basis.

Near the entrance sits a large teletype machine from the ’60s, a sort of precursor to the fax machine, which the team bought on Craigslist and added a Linux machine to. It can now be used to play the ’70s text-based computer adventure game “Zork”.

In another room sits an old fashioned loom, which was donated to Quelab and will be hacked and repaired — another fine addition to the Fabrics Room, which already features several sewing machines and a serger.

An extensive wood shop takes up a whole wing of the place, with band saws, circular saws, a lathe and another laser cutting machine.

Off in one corner lies a dark room for developing black-and-white film, and in another is a Mig welder and an oxyacetaline torch setup.

In the 3D printing room, which features two printers and a scanning system utilizing the camera from an XBox, member Ben Cole sat diligently in front of the computer, designing and printing parts for his hydroponic garden at home, where he grows tomato plants in his upstairs apartment.

Cole has been a member for about a year, and his passion for hydroponics led him to electronics, metal working and a whole host of new skills at Quelab.

“In working on that one project, I do some of this (3D printing), I do some electronics, some elemental shop — which I never did in high school, and I’m excited to learn more about that,” Cole said. “I consider myself a newbie to the maker movement, but man, it’s fun.”

Cole is designing his entire system to be monitored and eventually run by an Arduino system, an open-source electronics platform that is very popular around Quelab and the maker movement, used to control anything from robots to any computer system.

Quelab president Walter Duran had a similar story. He said he first came to Quelab simply looking for a place to hang out, with no knowledge of the maker movement. He learned everything he knows from others in the community, and now he spends much of his free time

volunteering at the lab.

“Everyone here is a volunteer; no one does this as their day job. It’s really a labor of love,” Duran said.

Duran said he feels that Quelab is special because there are so few places like it in the world today where novices and pros get together to make things for fun.

“I think what we’re doing here is very new. You think about your public places where people get together — bars, coffee shops — they’re all places about consumption,” Duran said. “There are very few public spaces I know where

you get together for the sole process of creating. I think that adds a special sort of energy to the place, and people get into that.”

Geek culture is on display everywhere, from posters and a cardboard cutout of Boba Fett to prototype jewelry made in the laser cutter, featuring logos from Harry Potter, Star Wars and M.C. Escher.

“Our location isn’t too geeky, but all of the members are,” Nicholson said. “As an organization, we don’t all have one fandom; we’re all the

Pro wrestling is made of pure genius

Professional wrestling is a niche like no other.

There’s no other form of entertainment that can take you on the psychological ride like wrestling does. Yes, you must suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours, but that’s the same with movies and no one complains about that.

However, it’s still different with wrestling. The sports entertainers, like WWE Chairman Vince McMahon likes to say, are taking all the bumps and acting in front of a live audience all the time. Let’s just say there’s little room for error.

Maybe it’s the combination of the athletic side and the acting side that makes me love professional wrestling. Or maybe it’s the fact that I wish I could captivate an audience and have them listen to or watch everything I do with their full attention.

Regardless, I’ve always had a passion for wrestling. I started to watch during the Ruthless Aggression Era, which was around 2003. One of the headliners at the time was a bald, buff guy named Bill Goldberg, a former World Championship Wrestling superstar.

No, I was not infatuated with the former Atlanta Falcon. But I was a fan of the other bald guy who drank beer and whooped ass every Monday night on Raw. He went by the name of Stone Cold Steve Austin and my eyes never left the TV screen when he came on. Unfortunately, by the time I started watching World Wrestling Entertainment, Austin’s in-ring career had ended and he just went to the ring to hand out Stone Cold Stunners to anyone who happened to piss him off. I thought it was entertaining as hell.

The one wrestler who captivated me and turned me into an

avid fan was Shawn Michaels. “The Heartbreak Kid” always gave performances that just blew my mind away. He was good on the microphone, but what really got me was how he wrestled. It seemed like he never had a bad match.

Of course, it helped that he was a good sympathetic babyface — or “good guy” in WWE lingo — and it also worked that he was battling the heel Triple H. In 2003, Triple H started a faction called Evolution that included the 16-time World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair, “The Animal” Batista and a thirdgeneration kid named Randy Orton.

Fast forward a few months and Triple H and Michaels were battling it out for the World Heavyweight Championship. I think that feud might be my favorite in wrestling history. Those two just had a chemistry and knew what the other wanted to do.

The match that solidified my fandom was the last-man-standing match between Michaels and Triple H at the 2004 Royal Rumble, an annual wrestling pay-per-view.

Granted, I was only 10 years old at the time, but the match caught my attention like no other. It was the type of match where they just beat the crap out of each other. I had seen some beatings but nothing like that.

Both men were battered and bloody at the end of the match. Michaels had an opportunity to win it by standing up before the count of 10, while Triple H was laid out motionless on the mat. Michaels grabbed the ropes and almost came up to his feet when the ref counted to 10. It was ruled a draw.

I was devastated. Michaels had gone through hell and had nothing to show for it. Well, at least that’s what I had thought at the time.

Michaels had more than enough to show for it. He had my full attention and everyone else’s in the arena. That’s what he wanted as a performer. He wanted to captivate me as a fan and that’s what he did.

Now those moments of disbelief are few and far between, but that’s what keeps me watching. I yearn for those moments where the matches seem real and I can’t take my eyes off the TV screen.

That’s what makes professional wrestling to me. It’s not the championships. It’s not the entrances.

It’s not the sport.

It’s those moments where you forget what’s real and just soak it all in. That’s wrestling.

Players, collectors keep Magic gathering

By Imani Lambert Magic: The Gathering is filling player’s pockets with a different type of paper.

The tactical fantasy trading card game has seen a popularity boom in recent years, with growth of 20 percent in 2014 alone.

Ben Kline, store manager at Active Imagination, said in Albuquerque the game was an instant success with its first public release in 1993. More than 70 expansions later, new players are still joining in the fun.

“Magic wasn’t expected to be a continuously running game. It just evolved that way,” Kline said.

Magic’s creator, Wizards of the Coast, keep fans interested in gameplay by releasing new cards three times a year. It offers a way for players to change the way they play the game and also keeps players coming back for more.

Online Magic card vendors like cardkingdom.com have cards that range in price from 10 cents to more than $500, however, many casual players said they make their cards pay for themselves.

Jamison Wagner, a senior mechanical engineering major, said the initial cost of playing Magic is

not extravagant, although it can become pricey. Wagner said he spent around $50 on Magic cards over the course of a year, but traded in an expensive card he didn’t need to cover the cost of other cards he did need.

He said he played collectable trading card games in the past, like Yu-Gi-Oh, but turned to Magic because it is more affordable.

“In Yu-Gi-Oh, the prices would fluctuate from $40 to $120 for a piece of (cardstock)—which is ridiculous, which is why I stopped playing. I’m not going to spend $500 dollars for a deck,” said Wagner.

In 2013, as people became more accepting of the game, pro Magic tournaments suddenly became more popular, said David Baca, a Level 1 judge of Magic: the Gathering at Active Imagination. Before that, there was a stigma for playing Magic professionally, he said.

Pro tour competitions for Magic are held four times a year around the globe. The second pro tour for 2015 will be held in Brussels, Belgium on April 10. The prize payout for each tour is $250,000 in cash prizes. First place winner will receive a $40,000 cash prize.

Princess alum creates role model for NM kids

The early experiences people have as children tend to shape the interests, values and beliefs they carry throughout adulthood.

Paula Bauman, a communications alumna, understands this. She is working to become a role model for children—particularly young girls— with the creation of her original character, Princess Unicorn.

Princess Unicorn is a culmination of Bauman’s interests in cosplay and feminism and was developed as a way to empower children to identify and pursue their goals.

In her handmade costume, Bauman works full time making appearances at birthday parties, empowerment parties and other family-minded events.

A quick internet search reveals dozens of local options for Disney princess appearances at parties, but none that offer original characters or empowerment parties geared toward children.

“When you look at mainstream media or even into the lives of ordinary children and the sort of role models that are available, there aren’t that many,” Bauman said. “(This is especially true) in the limited or impoverished communities that you see throughout New Mexico. I wanted to fill that niche.”

“As the brand grows, I really hope to get more into the educational side of this, again, promoting positive princessing,” Bauman said.

“Birthday parties supplement the costs of

empowerment parties. Eventually I want those to be free, but I can’t always do that (at the moment.)”

for themselves or to impress others almost always, he said.

Keator wants to see men making a better attempt at dressing better, he said.

“The question we ask all of our clients is ‘who are you and where are

you going,’” he said. “We really try to help them define who they are.”

Morgan Gangwere has been involved with Quelab since its early days and said the best part is getting to share your knowledge with other people.

“As for what I like doing at Quelab? Teaching, predominantly,” Gangwere said. “I’m a huge advocate for the ‘if you can’t open it, you don’t own it’ crowd, and I’ve

taught and been taught how to repair devices or otherwise make them better — phones, routers, mostly tech things.”

Not everyone sees a dollar sign around Magic, though.

Gwen Maitreya has been

playing casually for about two years and has about five different decks. She hasn’t spent much money on cards because she knows so many players who simply share the extras they have accumulated.

Maitreya said she likes the fantasy aspect of the game as well as

playing with others.

Kline said he agrees that Magic is a community-building game that brings friends together. Active Imagination has a room full of tables where players can build critical thinking skills and tactical language skills once they adapt to the jargon.

And for Gonzalez, the card game can be so much more.

“Magic has really been, like, my first girlfriend,” he said.

Bauman has been involved in cosplay, short for costume play, for about six years and her costumes have often reflected her fondness of unicorns. She has dressed as Lady Amalthea from “The Last Unicorn” as well as Princess Celestia from “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.”

Princess Unicorn was inspired by these characters as well as Bauman’s experiences working with kids throughout her life, she said.

She has taught dance classes and even worked at Walt Disney World for six months a few years ago.

“The overarching message of the brand is to promote literacy and creative communication via writing, reading and imaginative movement,” Bauman said. “Not a lot of young kids have the skills to verbalize their needs or wants.

By giving them a variety of skills — writing, reading empowering literature, movement — they can convey their interests in a more positive way.”
