By Matthew Reisen Bernie Sanders hosted a campaign rally at the Albuquerque Convention Center to more than 7,000 people, with hundreds more being turned away at the doors. Jim Hightower introduced the presidential candidate, addressing the Albuquerque crowd as revolutionaries. “You’re lucky here in N.M. because you don’t have to wait for Independence Day in July. You can have it on the June the 7,” Hightower said. “Bernie Sanders is our 2016 Declaration of Independence.” Sanders began his speech by thanking The Sweet Nations Dance Group for their performance at the rally and wasted no time talking brass tax. “It sounds to me and looks to me
like Albuquerque is ready for a political revolution,” he said. Sanders talked about his initial lack of presence in the polls and how that has swung to the result of Sanders’ victories in twenty states, encouraging others to vote on the June 7 primary to have a major victory in New Mexico. Sanders addressed his strong support from young people aged 45 and younger. “Our vision, a vision of social justice, economic justice, racial justice and environmental justice. That vision resting on the shoulders of young people is the future of America,” he said. “We are in this fight till the last ballot is cast.” As far as the important issues, Sanders talked about rights for health care, higher

By Matthew Reisen Donald Trump held a campaign rally at the Albuquerque Convention Center Tuesday evening, hosting over 8,000 supporters while hundreds of protesters picketed outside. David Chavez, former member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, thanked supporters for coming out to support Trump. “If you’re here because you want political correctness, you’re in the wrong event. If you think we’re going to sing ‘kumbaya,’ you’re in the wrong event. If you’re sick and tired of political correctness, you’re at the right event,” Chavez said. Finally, it was Donald Trump’s turn to take the stage, to mass applause.
“All over the country this is happening. Look at this crowd, this is a lot of people,” he said. “We are going to win this state, we are going to win New Mexico so big.” Barely five minutes into his speech, Trump ejected a protester as the crowd went wild, chanting “U.S.A.” “The safest place to be anytime in our country, is at a Trump rally. It’s love, believe me,” Trump said. “We have all night together folks, it’s a love fest.” The presumptive frontrunner for the Republican nomination ejected several protesters throughout the evening, suggesting they “Go home to mommy.” At one point, Trump supporters yelled, “build a wall” as some protesters holding an “Undocumented/Unafraid” banner

Trump protesters incite passion and violence By Sarah Trujillo As the rally in support of visiting presidential candidate and supremely divisive figure Donald Trump drew to a close, the tension from individuals protesting some of his sentiments were just beginning to heat up. Early on in the evening protesters played bongos, trumpets and chanted “Si se puede!” The evening turned rowdy, but many protesters were able to voice their opinions peacefully before things got too rowdy. One UNM graduate student, Oliver Baker, proudly displaying his anti-Trump sign. “I’m against Trump because he’s for the exploitation of the very people who are supporting him. I’m working class. I grew up working class,” he said. “This guy is gonna make it harder on my life and everyone else who works for a living.” Yaquelin Orozco, a Guatemalan mother of two, attended the protest for her husband who was recently deported to Mexico.
“All of this, for me, feels personal” Orozco said. Lisa Atwa, another protester, quoted Abraham Lincoln saying, “To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.” Amid comments made by Trump throughout his campaign, Atwa was impacted by his anti-Muslim rhetoric. “I think it’s very dangerous that he wishes to ban Muslims from our country. It’s not democratic. We should welcome all people here,” she said. “That’s how our country was founded and people came here for freedom.” Atwa’s daughter, Heba AtwaKramer, said she stands by her mother and her people. “We have to voice our opinions for those who cannot and do not necessarily have the opportunity to do that,” AtwaKramer said. Being of mixed ethnicity, Atwa-Kramer said she is hopeful for a future of acceptance.
