NCAA change may improve games’ flow By Thomas Romero-Salas The flow of the game has always seemed to be an issue in college basketball, and the NCAA has taken some steps to rectify that. In an attempt to fix the pacing of the game, the NCAA approved a change from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters starting this upcoming season for the women. “They’ve been debating them for a couple of years now, so I knew something was going to change,” UNM head coach Yvonne Sanchez said. “I really like it. It gets us more toward more global basketball. In FIBA rules (for international play), it’s four quarters.” The timeout situation has also changed: Teams will now have just four timeouts (three 30-second timeouts and one 60-second timeout) per game. Media timeouts will happen just once every quarter. The timeout will occur at the first dead ball or below the five-minute mark of every quarter. However, if a team calls a timeout before the five-minute mark, that will be treated as a media timeout. “I just think the game will flow a little bit better,” Sanchez said. “If you have a running team, the opposing coach might have to call a timeout to see what happens. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Another NCAA rule change allows teams to advance the ball to the frontcourt following a timeout after a made basket in

The University entertainment district would have included a restaruant, a coffee shop, a tap room and a live music space. Marble announced its plans to back out of the agreement on May 28.

Plans for the University to create an entertainment plaza on South Campus have grinded to a halt after project partner Marble Brewery decided to back out of the venture. Tom Neale, interim director of UNM Real Estate, which manages all property holdings of the University, said they were notified in late May of Marble’s withdrawal. Neale said that despite presenting financial figures of their plan to the Lobo Development Corporation earlier in the year, Marble became uncomfortable as they and the University worked to finalize a contract. “The proposal that Marble provided was the most attractive in terms of the economics and the design concept,” he said. “When we got into the negotiations, I think they increasingly got uncomfortable on the terms of a long-term ground lease, and then they also got uncomfortable about the ability for them to develop the project in accordance

with the economics that they proposed.” The Lobo Development Corporation, in charge of planning and building such projects that UNM Real Estate oversees, didn’t release monetary specifics from Marble’s proposal. The development would have been a 1.4-acre plaza located on the corner of University Boulevard and Avenida Cesar Chavez, in an area currently occupied by a parking lot. It would have included a restaurant, coffee shop and taproom as well as a courtyard area for live entertainment. Soren Peters, co-owner of Marble Brewery, told the Albuquerque Journal that, despite their excitement about the project, they didn’t feel content going forward with it. “We’d love to work with UNM, (but) that one (development) wasn’t going in the right direction, and instead of wasting their time, we just agreed to disagree,” Peters said. Neale said the breakup wasn’t
