Students and migrants can learn from each other, UNM associate professor says Sayyed Shah At a time when the European Union is debating plans for dealing with a major refugee influx from the Middle East, a UNM professor is helping refugees feel at home in the United States.

Jessica Goodkind, associate professor at the Department of Sociology, is pairing up refugee families with UNM

students to help them resettle in the U.S. as part of the “Refugee Well-Being Project.”

Goodkind said she believes that for many refugees that are coming to the United States, their reasons for their seeking refugee status are related to U.S. interventions in their countries.

“I think we have even more of a responsibility to welcome people who have been uprooted,

often due to policies of the U.S. government,” she said.

Goodkind has been working with refugees for the past 22 years. In 1993 she worked at a refugee camp in Thailand, where she helped prepare refugees who were going to be resettled in the United States. During her work she visited several Mong refugees in the U.S, and often found that they were isolated and not

welcomed by many Americans, she said.

“I wanted a way to connect refugees with Americans and build on the strengths that refugees bring, and have students learn from refugee families, but also (have) families able to learn from students about life in the U.S.,” she said.

According to a BBC report, European Commission President

Jean-Claude Juncker announced plans for resettling refugees on Wednesday, saying that the plans will offer a “swift, determined and comprehensive” response to Europe’s migrant crisis.

“Under the proposals, 120,000 additional asylum seekers will be distributed among EU nations, with binding quotas,” the report said.

This past Friday at Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe, Will Shuster’s Zozobra burned for the 91st time in front of 40,000 people.

The annual event hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe consists of the burning of a giant puppet nicknamed “Old Man Gloom.” The burning of Zozobra, the 50-foot mobile statue made of muslin and stuffed with shredded paper, is said on the event’s website to be based on the belief that “as fire consumes the beast, so go the feelings of gloom and doom from the past year.”

Being that the centennial of the Zozobra event is now only nine years away, the decade leading up to 2024 is going to reflect on the designs of previous decades, last year’s being the 20s and this year’s being the 30s.

City Council gives pot law another try Message from voters was blunt: leagalize marijuana

By Matthew Reisen For the second time, the Albuquerque City Council will vote on a bill to decriminalize marijuana. This new development comes after an overwhelming citizen vote that showed the majority of Albuquerque residents support decriminalization.

Albuquerque City Councilors Rey Garduño and Isaac Benton will introduce a bill to decriminalize marijuana on Sept. 9 with full council consideration taking place on Sept. 21.

Garduño, president of the Council, said the ordinance, if passed, will make possession of an ounce or less of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia a civil infraction, with a fine of $25.

A civil infraction is not considered a criminal conviction, so the ordinance also takes away the possibility of jail time, he said.

“Let’s not criminalize people who are not causing or creating a

against it should recognize that it is something the public supports, and should vote for it this time around, he said.

“It will benefit the individual by not criminalizing that person,” he said.

Garduño said that as well as the individual, it will also help the city, “so that it doesn’t clog up the court system, it doesn’t incarcerate people, which is expensive, and it doesn’t disrupt people’s lives for such a small infraction.”

According to the website for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), there were 3,198 arrests in 2012 for marijuana possession in New Mexico, taken from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports.

“I’ve said, and continue to say, that incarcerating people for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana or paraphernalia is creating criminals where there is no crime,” Garduño said. “It’s an infraction — let’s just take care of it that way.”

He said it will also unburden police from having to incarcerate for such a small infraction.

“When we are taking policemen off the street, another issue, another more important issue, is not being taken care of because they are dealing with something that is so low-priority,” he said.

Garduño said he could imagine no drawbacks to decriminalization. “None whatsoever.”

“Most of the time, people that have such a small amount of marijuana are not drug dealers, are not people we should be wary of,” he said.

Another thing Garduño considered are the individuals who are burdened and hurt by incarceration.

“Those that get a record, that are young, endure an inordinate amount of penalty by carrying that record for the rest of their lives,” he said.

Garduño said that marijuana’s ongoing illegality only encourages larger crime activity through

illicit distribution, such as cartels.

“They love the fact that it’s illegal,” he said. “It’s a sure way to price their merchandise at the highest level possible.”

Garduño concluded that legalizing marijuana will benefit New Mexico as a state.

“I think that we, as a state, would then be able to gain by being able to tax that merchandise,” he said. As far as benefits from taxing marijuana, Garduño hopes that money could go to education, among other things, he said.

“This is the first step, but I would hope that the state would follow with decriminalizing, like 38 other states have,” he said.

“Also, I think that nationally, it should be legalized. We’re going through sort of, a protracted prohibition that happened in the ’20s with liquor.”

“It is nice to see German people who are out welcoming refugees and giving them food and offering them places to stay,” she said.

“People in other countries like Iceland are also doing the same.”

Goodkind said she is aware of a movement in the United States requesting that the government increase its influx of refugees, Syrian refugees in particular.

Even though the United States resettles 70 to 80 thousand refugees a year, this number is small compared to the country’s population, she said.

Currently, Goodkind is working with some of the larger populations of refugees resettling in Albuquerque, she said.

“We have refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, The Democratic Republic of Congo and other African countries,” she said.

In the past two years, the proj-

ect officials enrolled 93 adults, their families and their children.

“We are about to start a new group of families in the project,” she said. “We are meeting families right now and planning to enroll 60 more adults and their families this year.”

She praised the courage of refugees who resettle in the United States.

“They are, for the most part, very resilient people, because they have been through war or conflict situations and had to leave their homes,” Goodkind said. “They managed to go first to a country of safety, and then apply for refugee status and come to the United States. I would say most refugees coming here bring a lot of strength and a lot of resilience.”

She said that refugees arriving from different countries deal

both with overcoming past traumas and the stress of resettling in a new country.

“Often, in the United States they need to learn a new language,” she said. “They can be really isolated, since they leave their families and friends behind. They usually cannot bring a lot with them, so they are really often starting from the scratch.

They need a place to live and find a job.”

She said that many refugees are highly skilled, but that it is difficult for them to transfer their credentials or educational backgrounds to work in the U.S. Kerstin Kalke, a communication and journalism student from Germany, said that the refugees face many health issues, including psychological problems.

Germany has been taking on a significant number of refugees,

according to BBC reports.

“No one leaves home without any reason. They are leaving their homes because they cannot survive in their home countries,” she said. She said she appreciates the role of Germany in helping the refugees, and that it was great to see how her country was greeting them.

Goodkind said it is the time for U.S. citizens to devise actions they can take locally, nationally and internationally to address the refugee crisis.

“We don’t want to wait and look back years later and wish that we had done something more,” she said

Thousands of people from war-torn Middle-Eastern countries have been trying to flee to Europe by sea in search of better living conditions, according to BBC reports.

The problem intensified when thousands of migrants entered Hungary and were stopped from moving to other countries. Meanwhile, a photo of a 3-year-old child who died while traveling from Turkey to Europe by sea circulated in the media and brought the issue to public discourse, according to Guardian newspaper.

Goodkind said she believes the recent refugee influx in Europe will have a major impact on the continent.

She said she was pleased to see that there have been many countries, like Germany, that have agreed to resettle a large numbers of refugees.

However, once it reached mayor Berry, it was vetoed.

Garduño said that the members of the Council who voted against it, as well as Mayor Berry, did so because they didn’t know how their constituents felt and didn’t want to vote for something that the public may not support.

A citywide vote in November showed, to the contrary, that 62 percent of voters want marijuana decriminalized.

“I expect it to not only pass, but pass by a large margin,” Garduño said. “There wasn’t a single district in the whole city that was not over 50 percent. In fact, 52 percent was the lowest, district by district.”

LETTERS Humankind oblivious to severity of skyward conditions Editor, Sometimes, what seems harmless is not. Humanity is fueling not only what subdues hopeful possibilities, but also what relentlessly generates adversities.

Humankind apparently remains unaware

Western militaries will reclaim land in name of restoration Editor,

of the wrath it imposes upon itself as result of its frequent skyward obtrusiveness.

Yet the full extent of the possible adverse fallout may not be fully recognized.

Three overlapping, possibly highly aggravating skyward paradoxes persist.

The first is air traffic, including the exploration of outer space; the second relates to the frequencies associated with wireless technology; and the third involves the pollution of the atmosphere. Each of

these disturbances is generating what could become disheartening possibilities for humankind, although the gravity of the situation does seem to be grasped.

Mounting concerns are also associated with persistently extracting vital resources from the planet that are already below a level that could demean current earthly properties. This degrading might impose horrific earthly decay that would further complicate human lives with problematic

developments, even quadruple the rate at which natural disasters could manifest.

Human-friendly properties could become marginalized; human-life sustaining innate functionalities are at risk of becoming jeopardized.

Today: Migrant escapades in hordes to Western Europe as blowback and karmic payback from Middle Eastern and African nations for having their pot churned by Western militaries bombing and fractionating existing factions even further, all in

the name of counter-terrorism.

Tomorrow? Using the threat of being overrun by the very people they once colonized as the next excuse (“white man’s burden” no longer working), the corresponding erstwhile colonizers re-colonize

the selfsame countries, all in the name of reconstruction.

Martinez addresses UNM on state of education

By David Lynch New Mexico Gov. Susanna Martinez came to UNM on Wednesday to outline some of her initiatives for higher education across the state, in hopes that new policies will be implemented to help college students finish their studies on time.

“We are falling far short of one of the key expectations that New Mexicans have of us: to see students graduate and graduate on time,” she said.

She spoke in front of a full SUB ballroom, where University administration, college leaders and others gathered for Martinez’s Summit for Higher Education.

Her strategies include lowering the credit-hour requirement for all degrees to 120, making credits easily transferable between institutions and getting students the information they need regarding what courses they should take.

enough to push boundaries and challenge norms and practical enough to thrive in the workforce,” Martinez said.

David Longanecker, president of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, said that the 46-percent graduation rate at fouryear institutions in New Mexico is far below the national average of 69 percent.

He added that New Mexico is one of 11 states in which the older demographic is better educated than the younger, giving those attending the summit a sense of urgency.

“Your older adult population will be retiring before too long,” he said. “You not only have the challenge of bringing your young adult population up to the standard in the nation, but you will be replacing a well-educated population as well.”

amounts to taking 15 hours each semester for four years.

Currently, a minimum of 128 hours is needed to graduate with a bachelor’s degree at UNM, according to catalog.unm.edu.

Martinez also endorsed what she referred to as “meta-majors,” consolidated areas of interest for students just arriving at a University.

“A little exploration in college is a good thing. A lot of wandering is not,” she said. “The light at the tunnel does not get any brighter for a student who wanders without direction.”

She said the strategy would involve freshmen taking core classes for a declared general field of interest, and later settling into a specific degree, and potentially career, pathway.

Martinez said she would also like to make it easier on students switching to new colleges, specifically when it comes to transferring credits and being able to immediately apply them to their degrees.

She said her focus is not just on graduation rates, but also for

students to be as prepared as they can be for the workforce — namely, the local workforce.

“It makes no sense to pay for all the training, and then send the student elsewhere,” she said.

Chancellor for Health Sciences Paul Roth said he agreed with the priority, and that the state’s medical workforce benefits from keeping its students. About 99 percent of all graduates in medical schools at UNM are state residents, and 40 percent of all doctors practicing in the state are New Mexicobred, Roth said.

“I think that’s at the core of everything we’re trying to do,” he said. “Given that we spend relatively high amounts of our state budget on higher education, you would hope that the state benefits by having students (stay).”

Martinez described students as an investment, saying the state should do all it can to retain graduates in New Mexico, providing a pipeline straight to the local workforce.

As a result, they end up having to take far more credits than necessary by the end of their college careers — sometimes 150 or more.

problem of rising tuition, saying that over the past five years the cost of attending college has gone up 17 percent nationally, while average income has gone down almost 5 percent in that same span.

“It’s a staggering amount that even exceeds the growth in health care costs over that same period of time,” she said. “Tuition is always going up, and that defies logic. We owe it to our students (to fix this).”

Martinez ended by saying that the state and leaders of statewide universities owe it to their students to prepare them for their futures.

Event warns of alcohol’s effect on pregnancies

By Fin Martinez The UNM Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions hosted a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome awareness day to inform students and the general public about the syndrome.

Jerome Romero, CASAA education and outreach manager, said he believes that the event brought the issue of FAS to public consciousness.

“I think we’re getting the message across,” Romero said. “When you ask students ‘do you know about FAS?’ there’s about 50 percent who do, and 50 percent who say they know a little bit about it, but don’t know the details.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control’s website, 44 percent of women in New Mexico drink, and another 15 percent binge drink. A 2010 CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System statistic states that one in 13 pregnant women report having at least one drink within the past 30 days during their pregnancy.

“Drinking rates, including binge drinking, among women of childbearing age fall in the mid-

range for the U.S. as a whole,” said Derek Hamilton, associate professor of psychology and neurosciences at UNM. “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders are more prevalent in the U.S. and other areas of the world than originally thought, and it is important to keep in mind that other risk factors, such as genetic and environmental factors, are involved.”

In order to involve the public in its activities, pizza was given to participants who wore red shoes or clothing, provided they complete a quick FAS quiz, Romero said.

“I think that’s an instant message that you’re getting rewarded for that one behavior you just learned something new for,” Romero said. “I know they came out for the food, but we want the educational message to be present as well.”

Hamilton said that FASDs are estimated to occur in 2 to 5 percent of the U.S. population, which means it qualifies as a major public health concern. He said that because FASDs are the number-one cause of completely preventable mental retardation, increasing awareness of the potential conse-

quences of alcohol consumption during pregnancy could help reduce the number of cases.

“There should absolutely be more exposure about FASDs.” Hamilton said “(Exposure) is particularly important, because we now understand that alcohol exposure during prenatal development can affect the fetus in a number of different ways, including severe outcomes and outcomes that might not be easily detectable, but are nonetheless persistent and negatively affect the individual.”

Alcohol is a teratogen that, even in low concentrations, can impede the growth of a developing embryo’s nervous system, Hamilton said. This can result in lifelong problems with a child’s learning, memory, attention span, intelligence and social behavior, along with other behavioral and cognitive domains.

The event attracted around 50 people, and Romero said he wants the event to have a higher turnout next year.

“It’s interesting when you talk to the students,” Romero said. “They’ll all have a story, like one young man who said that his adopted sister has

Film Review

Lack of deep characters forms a passable plot

By Nathan Reynolds Finding adventure and challenging himself are the goals of Bill Bryson, played by Robert Redford, in the movie “A Walk in the Woods.” However, the film itself does little to challenge typical “buddy movie” conventions.

Redford plays a retired travel writer who, discontent with growing older, decides to hike the Appalachian Trail. The primary relationship in the film is that between Bryson and Stephen Katz, played by Nick Nolte, who is the only one of Bryson’s old travel buddies that he could convince to join his trip. Bryson and Katz could never get along, but seem to want to try -- Katz out of loneliness, and Bryson seemingly out of a need to reconnect with his younger self.

Redford is always a compelling presence, and here he displays his sardonic wit as the straight man to Nolte’s grumbly, cantankerous old character. Nolte’s shtick is amusing, occasionally bringing up the absurdity of old men hiking the Appalachians. It works in stints, but ultimately it comes off as cartoonish. This might not be a criticism if the script took more chances, but the main character’s escapades mostly contrast his childish attitude with his age, a joke that gets obvious quickly.

The main problem with “A Walk in the Woods” is the relatively tepid script. As they hike, the guys joke and discuss their past love affairs and adventures abroad, but they never really say anything. The film never fills in the gaps about their past

connection or why Katz admires Bryson enough to hike across several states with him. Bryson never really makes clear what was keeping him from writing, or his true discontentment with old age.

The dialogue never goes beyond a comic discussion of aging, and the characters never display much depth or learn anything from one another.

There are several moments of sadness throughout the course of the movie, but the characters of “A Walk in the Woods” are never examined closely enough to imbue the drama with much meaning.

There is also no physical intensity to the action in the film. It could have been great, but it just didn’t take that next step.

Technically speaking, the landscapes are well-shot, with

several gorgeous panoramas of the Appalachians. These add to the feel of the journey these men are taking, but there is never any real sense of danger. The film never shifts much in tone during the exploration of its subject.

“A Walk in the Woods” is not unpleasant to watch. It’s generally well constructed, but ultimately middle of the road in quality. Director Ken Kwapis paints the story with too broad a brush, going for general sufficiency over specific development, and the film doesn’t say much about growing, aging or its characters.

Weekend to feature toughest opponents of year

New Mexico’s start to the 2015 campaign has been far from a stroll in the park.

The Lobos have had no time to ease into the season, as head coach Jeff Nelson created an opening schedule against some fierce opponents. However, Nelson said his squad’s upcoming trip to Southern California will be unlike the previous two tournaments of the year.

“This weekend coming up is the toughest one of the year, we feel,” Nelson said.

UNM will begin the USC Classic today at 1:30 p.m. against Pepperdine, a team that is catching a lot of attention.

The Waves are enjoying a 6-1 record to begin the season under first-year head coach Scott Wong.

Nelson said Pepperdine has been a surprise this year, and he expects to compete in three tough matches in the tournament.

Thursday afternoon’s battle will be just a taste of what the sixth-best

team in the nation will bring on national television. Friday night’s affair against the USC Trojans has been deemed the Pac-12 game of the week and will be featured on the Pac-12 Network.

UNM is no newcomer to the national spotlight after playing on ESPN3 against Ball State Aug. 29. The five-set loss came down to the wire for New Mexico’s Lobos (4-2), who will be looking to change their fortunes playing with televised exposure.

No. 6 USC (6-0) has lost just one set all season, which came in the team’s home opener against North Carolina. The Trojans started their season off in perfect fashion following last year’s loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s a weekend where anything you pick up is just a bonus,” Nelson said. “If we can come out with two wins or three wins, it’s a really big weekend for us.”

The Lobos will cap the weekend on Saturday against Idaho State, a squad that has won its past five matches after starting the season 0-2.

The Bengals (5-2) have faltered in just one set in the past five contests.

“Our schedule was like the 40th toughest schedule this year, and that’s going to bode well for us,” Nelson said. “I think we’re in a good place. I’m seeing more fight out of this group than any group here.”

UNM has dropped the final game in the past two tournaments, both going to five sets. Nelson said he was pleased by the intensity his team brought this past weekend in the Lobo Classic.

Although New Mexico didn’t end up sweeping the tournament, Nelson said he has been thrilled by the level his team has been playing at.

“We knew if we came out with two wins, it was a good tournament,” Nelson said. “If we came out with three wins then it was a huge tournament for us.

Unfortunately, we got two.”

Team aims to keep streak going against Tulsa

By Thomas Romero-Salas Now it’s time for the real season to begin.

A week after New Mexico dismantled Football Championship Subdivision member Mississippi Valley State 66-0, the Lobos will get their first real taste of competition when they host Tulsa on Saturday at University Stadium.

Even though it’s still early in the year, a win against Tulsa might define the season for UNM. If the Lobos come away with a victory it will be their first three-game winning streak since 2007. The Lobos also won last year’s season finale against Wyoming.

UNM is a four-point favorite over Tulsa.

“I think, if you look at our schedule, we’ll all probably look back on this game when this season is over and say it’s a pivotal game,” head coach Bob Davie said. “I don’t back away from that, and I’ve known that since I’ve looked at the schedule. I knew this was going to be a big football game.”

Tulsa (1-0) will look to test UNM’s defense with an up-tempo, spread offense. The Golden Hurricane will rely on its fast pace to tire the Lobo defense and make as many plays as possible. In a 47-44 overtime win over Florida Atlantic, Tulsa gained 618 yards of total offense on 86 plays.

UNM (1-0) has prepared all offseason to face these types of offenses. The Lobo defense has had the luxury of facing its own offense, which has also gone to a more up-

tempo, no-huddle scheme.

“I can understand why there’s not a lot of respect for us on their end,” Davie said. “I’m sure they’re envisioning how many points they’re going to put up and how many yards they’re going to put up. They’re talented, and we’ve struggled against these types of offenses.”

Pace is not the only thing UNM has to worry about. Tulsa’s offense will try to span the field for big plays regardless of field position. The Golden Hurricane has the weapons to hurt the Lobos everywhere on the field as it returns 10 starters from last year’s 2-10 squad, including quarterback Dane Evans.

Tulsa’s key weapons are at receiver with senior Keyarris Garrett and junior Keevan Lucas. Garrett is coming off a career-game against FAU after a five-reception, 163 yard performance. Lucas was just as dynamic as he racked up 193 yards on ten catches with two scores.

“I’ll be looking forward to them.

They’re going to come out four and five wide and are going to test the defensive backs,” cornerback Cranston Jones said. “It’s going to come down to those deep balls that they do throw and those shots that they take. As a DB you have to live for these kinds of games.”

As impressive as Tulsa’s offense was in the season-opener, their defense was less than stellar. The Golden Hurricane gave up 563 total yards of offense, 300 of which came on the ground.

Tulsa’s inability to stop runs plays right into UNM’s strength with its triple-option offense. The

“We have a lot of stuff that we

wanted to show against a better opponent like Tulsa,” said quarterback Lamar Jordan. “It’s always ‘execute the play regardless of what the play is.’

We have to beat them to the punch.”
