LoboRESPECT unites UNM’s resources

Advocacy center will be a one-stop resource for victims of sexual assault, hazing and violence David Lynch On Friday afternoon the new LoboRESPECT advocacy center officially opened, the result of a two-year effort to provide a space for victims of sexual assault and hazing on campus.

Dean of Students Tomás Aguirre, one of the driving forces behind the center, addressed a crowd of students, University administrators and student governing body representatives, thanking the student body for prioritizing the issue.

“Think about some of the great movements of the past 100 years: the Vietnam War, apartheid – I think sexual violence is another one of those movements where we wouldn’t be where we’re at today if the students hadn’t taken more of an activist role,” he said.

Aguirre said the vision for the center is just the latest step in what started off as a task force formed by University President Bob Frank to address sexual violence. This gave rise to the LoboRESPECT mode of educating students about the problem that many college campuses face.

that rather than telling students what not to do, it would be more effective to tell students what to do, and that’s really about respecting each other and respecting oneself,” Aguirre said.

The center will provide a one-stop location for victims of sexual harassment as well as other kinds of abuse and hazing, whether physical or mental. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday, and is located on the second floor of the University Advisement and Enrichment Center.

The center also has a 24/7 hotline: (505)277-2911.

Aguirre said the creation of a streamlined advocacy center for an institution as big as UNM, with all its various departments already working to prevent hazing and sexual assault on campus, is rare.

In fact, it’s only the second center of its kind. An other is located at Ohio State University, an institution that enrolled almost 45,000 undergrads last fall.

“It’s just really hard when you have a massive institution like this where we’re very siloed internally,” Aguirre said. “You can’t bring everybody under the same roof, but what you can do is create a unit or an office that does that for you in a seminatural way, and that’s what I see the advocacy center as doing.”

I think the more we can raise awareness on these issues and continue to educate the members of our community, we slowly, bit by bit, bring it down to nothing.”

Kyle Stepp, student coordinator for LoboRESPECT, said that is the

team’s ultimate end goal: for the advocacy center’s existence to become obsolete.

“In the long-term, this places closes and we have developed a culture where everyone has an (antisexual assault) mindset,” Stepp said.

Frank thanked UNM regents, Vice President for Student Affairs Eliseo “Cheo” Torres and Provost Chaouki Abdallah for their part in making the center a reality.

He said it’s the responsibility of all higher-education institutions to teach students how to protect each other, and the LoboRESPECT advocacy center will help fulfill that.

Regent Bradley Hosmer said the center fulfills the initiative’s mission to “protect the pack” with the resources it provides.

“Getting help should be simple. Getting help should be easy. This is easy: one phone number, one place gets you the help you need,” Hosmer said.

UNM has raised a few eyebrows lately with regard to sexual assault incidents on campus. Many students say police presence on campus is lacking, and the Department of Justice examined the University for its handling of sexual assault reports earlier this year.

Nonetheless, Aguirre said that the fight to end sexual assault is one that many University facets – including the Women’s Resource Center, the SHAC and LGBTQ Center – have been a part of for a long time. Now, the LoboRESPECT advocacy center will join the fight in getting

students the resources and education they need.

“Beyond that, (our priority is) just getting rid of the problem,” Aguirre said. “That’s really where we need to go.”

Shipping container center in ship shape Local businesses take advantage of avante-garde shopping development

By Ryan Lotz A new development built completely from shipping containers opened Friday, giving a unique face to the growing brewery scene in Albuquerque.

The Green Jeans Farmery will offer a unique atmosphere and intends to focus on local business.

“It consists of small, local, quality-driven tenants with a unique look,” said Green Jeans Farmery developer Roy Solomon.

“The location right there off of I-40 and Carlisle offers good visibility and personality in the shape. It has an individual identity.”

Solomon said he got the shipping container idea after seeing similar designs in California and Colorado. He said he wanted to bring a similar style to New Mexico, where that kind of architectural design is uncommon.

The development will offer multiple rooftop patios and a central firepit, and will consist entirely of local businesses.

Solomon also has several containers that are dedicated to hydroponic farms, where he grows his own organic food that he plans to share with some the tenants.

Among the various businesses that will find residence in the Green Jeans Farmery will be Santa Fe Brewing Company,

who Solomon recruited to be the development’s “anchor tenant.”

“The Green Jeans philosophy of repurposing and recycling those containers to build the project is right in line with Santa Fe Brewing’s philosophy of using renewable resources,” said Santa Fe Brewing Company President and Owner Brian Lock. “It was kind of the perfect fit.”

Lock believes that the location of the brewery’s new taproom, along with the company’s beer making experience and strong fan base, will have a lot to offer in Albuquerque’s ever-growing craft beer scene.

“We have a following for the brand already,” Lock said. “We’re going into Albuquerque, which is one of the stronger craft beer markets in the whole country, where I think we’ll be well represented.”

Some of the other Green Jeans tenants include Epiphany Espresso, Amore Neapolitan Pizzeria, Rustic on the Green (also known as the Rustic 505 food truck), Zeus’ Juice & Nutrition, Bocadillos, Rockin’ Taco, Chill’N Ice Cream, Distillery 365 and Fit Studio.

Alejandro Albarran, a senior political science major, said he thinks the Green Jeans Farmery will offer a fun and interesting environment for college-aged students.

“What’s really attractive about it is the open-space atmosphere,” Albarran said. “There’s nothing

We need to rewrite the narrative on minorities

By Jade Rivera “Drug traffickers.” “Illegals.” “Rapists.”

These are just a few of the terms that have been used in recent months to describe people who look like me. They’ve been heard in the blogosphere, on talk radio and even from presidential hopefuls on the national stage. They have fueled a sometimes nasty, often inaccurate debate about immigration in the United States.

Along the way – amidst all the pain and vitriol – they have created a huge opportunity: one on which our generation must take the lead.

The current dialogue about immigration has put Latinos in the United States at the forefront of national discussion. And the fact that it’s not the caliber of conversation our Latino communities deserve means we have the chance to change it.

As a teacher in Las Vegas, I had more opportunities to do this than most. Every day I got to see what students are capable of when they receive the support they need.

When one of my students in my first year of teaching was acting up in class, I pulled him out into the hallway and told him I knew he was capable of more and that I had higher expectations of him. He went back into the classroom and got to work. After class he

waited around to tell me, “Thank you, Miss.”

I said, “For what?” He replied, “No one has ever told me I was smart before. Thanks.”

Like kids of color in general, my students don’t achieve at lower levels than their white peers because they are less capable or less motivated. The gaps that manifest in the classroom directly reflect systemic gaps in educational opportunity according to race, class and zip code.

As a teacher and policy maker, I’ve seen this in a million ways, perhaps most painfully in students who miss out on the special education services they’re legally entitled to because their parents don’t have the resources to advocate for their rights.

With our country’s demographic makeup moving towards majority-minority, unless we address these gaps, we will soon be living in a world where the majority of students are underserved and behind.

When I first came to UNM, my career plans looked very different. My senior year, I had plans to go to grad school for a program in Higher Education and Student Affairs. But as spring rolled around, I learned more about Teach For America and started to wonder if maybe my graduate plans could wait.

Three years later, I’ve found a passion I never knew I had. Kids need to understand

that they can do so much more than what society tells them they can. And as a generation with a widely diverse range of backgrounds and experiences, we’ve got to be the ones that tell them.

When stereotypes and insults fly, it’s easy to get angry. It’s easy to scream or walk away. It’s easy to fall victim to doubts that anything will ever change. But we have to remember that kids are listening.

It’s up to us to use our education and our experiences to help them learn how to tune out the noise. It’s up to us to

empower them to fulfill their potential and rewrite the current, untrue narrative into one that fits.

“Resilient.” “Strong.” “Smart.” Those are the words that describe my kids, my family and my community. It’s time for their country to know it.

LETTERS Obama doesn’t stand for justice or equality for the unborn Editor, A quote from President Obama Wednesday, addressing Pope Francis: “You call on all of us, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, to put the ‘least of these’ at the center of your concerns...to stand up for justice and against inequality, and to ensure that every human being is able to live in dignity because we are all made in the image of God.” These words are coming from our president, a man who has vowed to veto bills that would: 1. Stand up for justice and against inequity.

2. Ensure that every human being is able to live in dignity.

3. And promote that we are all made in the image of God. The bills are: Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act: This would ban abortions nationally after five months of pregnancy. Fetuses during the fifth month can live outside of the womb and feel pain as you and I do. Currently, several states perform abortion up until the day of birth for any reason. New Mexico is the lateterm abortion capital. A woman is free to obtain an emergency C-section to remove

the baby if she is in danger, This would save her life and, in most instances, the baby’s.

Born-Alive Infants Protection Act: This would protect babies that have been born alive after a failed abortion. Many victims of failed abortions have shared their stories about nearly being dumped in a bucket of Formaldehyde to die - similar to other babies killed by abortion. Others have been left in a room to die, or had their spines or necks clipped by abortionists like Kermit Gosnell.

To defund Planned Parenthood: This would put a one-year hold on tax-dollar funding to Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider (300,000 abortions performed every year), to ensure that a proper investigation is held for the claims that they are selling babies’ hearts, lungs, brains, livers and eyes for profit. Men and women would have the 13,000 federally qualified health clinics that outnumber Planned Parenthood locations 20-1 and provide more services free of charge.

I would like to ask our president why he claims to stand up for justice and against inequality, to ensure that every human being is able to live in dignity, and to believe that we are all made in the image of God, but continues to drown innocent babies inside and outside of the womb in deep waters of injustice.

I would like to ask Obama supporters and all who do not support these three bills ... why? Why do these lives not matter if they are human lives? By the Constitution, aren’t we all promised life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Can any of us have these opportunities without life in itself?

I would like to ask the church and all supporters of life, “what are you doing to bring justice to the least of these?” Are you just protesting abortion, or are you helping women who are in these situations? Are you taking them into your homes? Are you offering them resources? Are you praying for them? If they choose life, do you support them after they have their babies? If they choose death, do you love them after their abortions? Are you adopting if you can afford to? Are you discipling others to carry the torch?

I have many questions, and I know many will go unanswered. This is not a place for me to shame, but to challenge each and every one of us, including myself. If you support life, what more can you do until abortion is done away with? If you do not value life and support abortion, I challenge you to at least reconsider on these bills.

Pope’s visit to congress an ominous sign of the future Editor, Swept up in the trumpeted spectacle of this pope’s giving of audience to our government leaders in no less than the nation’s capital, inviting him to a special ceremony in the White House to show him awe, having him speaking to a special joint session of Congress, we need to stand back a tad while reaching out our hands just to get a hint of his “awesome presence” and ask, “What’s wrong with this picture?”

It is our government not obeying its constitutional mandate to stay away from respecting the establishment of religion. It is now treating the leader of the majority denomination within our majority theocracy as though he is some divine adviser who gets to whisper in the ear of the world’s most powerful government.

This dangerous conjoining has been a hallmark of empires in the past; in a nation Christianizing rapidly in response to Muslim terrorism, this is the kind of empire we can logically foresee for our future.

ASUNM error leads to emergency meeting Miscommunication may have caused student group’s slashed appropriation

By David Lynch The Associated Students of UNM, the University’s undergraduate student governing body, will hold an emergency senate meeting this week to address an appropriation that may have been unfairly reduced at last week’s meeting.

During Wednesday’s regularly scheduled full senate meeting, appropriation 13F was presented and passed to give money to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, but not before the senate cut the amount requested in half due to what at the time seemed like poor representation on the student organization’s part.

Each organization that asks for funding from ASUNM via appropriations must present before the ASUNM finance committee to explain how the funds would be used. At last week’s full senate meeting, ASUNM finance committee

chair Sen. Ashley Hawney said that she replied via e-mail to the student organization about their scheduled time and date to present to the committee.

But Hawney said that information was never relayed through to leaders of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which was to help fund the hosting of a speaker on campus.

“I think since they missed half the process, I would feel comfortable giving them 50 percent,” Hawney said. “Organizations do have to have self-generating (finances) to receive funding, so if this event is truly vital to their organization, they will find a way to put it on regardless.”

However, ASUNM Vice President Alex Cervantes said on Friday that the alleged internal miscommunication might not have been what led to the organization being absent from the finance committee’s Sept. 16 meeting.

Cervantes said Hawney, instead of replying to the primary contact listed on the appropriation paperwork for

the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, replied to the organization’s adviser, who sent the appropriation request in the first place.

“We kind of went back and forth on whether or not that was legitimate grounds for doing certain things, but I really disagree with how it was handled, so…we’re looking at the appropriation again, and I’m trying to convince senators to fully fund it, cause I feel like this wasn’t a student error,” Cervantes said.

The student group’s leaders were at Wednesday’s full senate meeting, and said they would be okay with going through the process again if that was what it took to receive funding.

During discussion of the appropriation, when senators were deliberating over whether they should reduce the amount initially requested from $2,400 to $1,200, Sen. Brad Sedillo said that they should be cautious not

to reprimand the wrong people.

“The problem with reducing to penalize them doesn’t really penalize the people asking for the money, it penalizes the people who are using the money… it affects the services that that group provides.”

Wednesday’s emergency senate meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. in the SUB Atrium, will give senators a second chance to discuss whether the organization should receive full funding for what was essentially a communication mishap on ASUNM’s part.

“I know some senators are going to be really upset because they’re going to feel like we’re undermining their committee authority and things like that,” Cervantes said. “And I’m not necessarily sure that it’ll pass fully, but I feel like all the senators didn’t have access to this information, so that wasn’t fair for them to vote on it.”

Film Review

“The Look of Silence” examines our darker side The haunting lengths that the human mind will go to to protect itself is the primary subject of Joshua Oppenheimer’s riveting new documentary, “The Look of Silence.”

“The Look of Silence” serves as a companion film to Oppenheimer’s earlier film, “The Act of Killing,” which used a unique approach to bring to light the horrendous, but mostly unknown, events of the Indonesian genocide of 1965.

The genocide was a result of the Indonesian military takeover of the government in response to anti-communist fervor brought on by propaganda.

Oppenheimer’s interviews reveal how anyone suspected of being a communist was in danger of being kidnapped and executed, either by gangs obsessed with western culture or by paramilitary youth groups, both of which operated under military sanction. Most of the victims — who number almost one million,

according to the film — were made up of poor farmers and ethnic or religious minorities.

The surviving perpetrators of these war crimes are the documentary filmmaker’s primary fascination and means of examining these events. In “The Act of Killing,” Oppenheimer allows the killers to tell their stories and even re-enact the crimes in visceral detail. The result is a gruesome yet fascinating look at how people rationalize their actions, contrasted against Indonesia’s emerging consumer culture.

“The Look of Silence” is nearly as surreal as “The Act of Killing”, in that Oppenheimer’s camera once again focuses on men who seem eerily casual as they discuss executing people. Later on, the film becomes a very specific portrayal of history, as it were, being written by the victors.

A striking element of the first film was how it examined the disconnect between reality and cultural narrative. The brutality of the mass killings are an open secret, but are not discussed

because of the narrative that justifies the actions as necessary.

The perpetrators are in some cases treated as pseudo-celebrities.

The conversations with the killers are more grounded in “The Look of Silence.” Where “The Act of Killing” follows the men down a path of selfdelusion and simultaneous loathing to become more surreal, “The Look of Silence” attempts to bridge these cognitive gaps.

Oppenheimer no longer lets the perpetrators follow their trains of thought unchallenged.

Instead, accompanying him is an Indonesian man who was born several years after the genocide took place and had a brother who was killed. The man, an eye doctor by trade, goes about fitting glasses on the men who murdered his brother.

His instruments often obscure their faces in an absurd way while they detail their crimes, and the mixing of the banal activity with violent discussion gives the film a surreal quality. The contrast of everyday life and nearly unimaginable cruelty is shown starkly.

The eye doctor, who is never identified to protect his safety, challenges his brother’s murderers and logically examines their justifications, exposing their hypocrisy not by condemning them, but by simply stating facts. The film is very powerful when it cuts to his reactions, when the restrained but obvious emotions play out across his features as he listens to justifications for brutal acts.

When he displays basic sadness and empathy he seems to be the only sane person in mad world.

It’s fascinating to see the people’s disparate reactions as they are forced to reexamine a shameful time in their lives. Some try to trivialize the tragedy in an attempt to deal with it jokingly, while others take the opposite approach, trumpeting the necessity of the actions while minimizing the specifics of the result. One of the killers is all too ready to discuss the details of his crimes but, when his motivations are challenged, shrugs off questions by saying he doesn’t

Lobos come out with big win this weekend

By Robert Maler The New Mexico men’s golf team dominated the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate event over the weekend.

The Lobos didn’t waste any time jumping out to a 7-stroke lead after round 1, and posted a team score of 21-under for the first day. The Lobos led the scoring in all three rounds, and were the only team on the field to shoot better than par in each round.

Head coach Glen Millican said he was pleased to see the team show such consistent play and patience throughout the weekend. In fact, each player posted at least one round under par in the tournament.

“I like the way our guys played.

I’m pleased with the way we responded from not playing well in Minnesota,” he said. “There can be pressure playing on the home course.”

The event, which showcased 16 universities and a field of 100 players, began on Friday with each participant playing 18 holes over two rounds, and culminating on Saturday with the final 18 holes being played.

Millican said he was equally pleased by the final round, where several changes, such as hole locations being moved, made it much more difficult and risky for players to be aggressive. “(On Friday), the course was really scorable. The course played a little softer today; it changes,”

Millican said. “Our guys know that par’s a great score. You just have to adjust, be patient and know that our good golf is enough to get it done.”

UNM sophomore Gustavo Morantes posted the best score after the first round with an impressive 6-under par. His teammate, junior Andrej Bevins, posted back-to-back rounds of 4-under par and eventually took the lead at the end of the first day.

Bevins finished day one at 8-under par, and Morantes was a single stroke back in second place.

The final holes of the event had several players within a shot of the lead. Bevins held a 1-shot lead over UNLV’s AJ McInerney and San Diego’s Alex Chiarella going into the 18th hole.

His second shot left him with a 25foot putt, where Bevins closed things out in dramatic fashion. Instead of settling for a birdie, Bevins dialed in and sank the deep putt to end his day and the tournament with an eagle.

“I knew when I made that, it was over. I didn’t have to worry about any more holes,” Bevins said.

“I could just enjoy this win and the team win. It doesn’t get much better than this.”

Bevins topped the leaderboard at 10-under par for the tournament. UNLV’s McInerney would birdie the 18th and finish at 8-under. A bogey dropped Chiarella into a tie for third with Morantes at 7-under.

closest competitor, Texas Tech.

UNLV and Colorado State finished in a tie for third at 4-over, and San Diego State rounded out the top five at 8-over.

The other schools participating were Wyoming, San Diego, New Mexico State, Texas Christian

University, Bowling Green State, Colorado, Nevada, Louisiana Tech, Arizona, University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Denver.

The UNM players that competed as individuals also played well. Sean Carlon was third among individuals with

Offense finds its footing against Wyoming

It didn’t take long for New Mexico to find its offensive identity on Saturday.

UNM established its run game early, making several big plays on the way to a 38-28 win at Wyoming.

It’s the first time that the Lobos won their Mountain West conference opener since 2005.

The Lobos (2-2, 1-0 MW) had no problem running the ball against the Cowboys. UNM rushed 47 times for 302 yards, for an average of 6.4 yards per carry, including touchdown runs of 56 and 43 yards.

“I thought today was a key game for us more than just the first conference game,” Head Coach Bob Davie said. “Just to get back to our identity and see if we could have success with our identity. The most pleasant thing was we were able to do what we do.”

While UNM had its way on the ground, Wyoming (0-4, 0-1 MW) wasn’t able to establish its own rushing game. The Lobos held the Cowboys to just 42 yards on 30 attempts, including just 49 yards from running back Brian Hill.

“That’s probably our best position group, our running backs,” Jordan said. “When you have special guys like that, they can break for 60 yarders; you have to give them touches.”

Wyoming had trouble running the ball, but it did have success with the passing game. Quarterback Cameron Coffman completed 30 of 42 passes for 366 passing yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Wide receiver Tanner Gentry hauled in nine catches for 130 yards and a score.

“This is a great momentum push for us,” Cox said. “It builds confidence up for the defense and the offense, just the whole team in general.”

Lobos lack consistent libero

By Liam Cary-Eaves New Mexico volleyball head coach Jeff Nelson’s search for a starting libero continued in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Nevada.

For the third consecutive game, Nelson has had to command a jersey swap in the middle of a match due to lackluster performances from the defensive position. UNM (8-6, 1-1 MW) has completed 14 games, but the Lobos can’t seem to find any sort of rhythm at libero.

“We can’t keep playing musical chairs at that position,” Nelson said. “I think it’s frustrating for the coaches, but I think it’s more frustrating for the players, not knowing who is going to just grab that position and own it.”

Defensive specialist Stephanie Chavez received the starting nod from Nelson against Nevada (6-8, 1-1 MW) and came out of the gates strong for UNM. Aside from four receiving errors, Nelson said Chavez’s defense was phenomenal, but her shaky passing warranted an early exit.

Outside hitter Julia Warren said the group is able to conform

to whatever roster is on the court.

However, Warren said she hopes the position becomes steadier down the stretch so the team doesn’t have to deal with the midgame roster jumbles.

Despite the inconsistencies at a vital spot on the court, UNM stepped up its offensive attack in the fourset victory over Nevada, following a poor performance in the conference opener against SDSU (5-9, 2-0 MW) on Thursday night.

“We have a lot of soul searching to do,” Warren said. “I think it shows how our team is going to do in the future, after bouncing back from a tough loss like that.”

Not one of UNM’s starting hitters swung for a positive on percentage in the 3-0 loss to SDSU. However, Warren and outside hitter Devanne Sours made sure not to put together a repeat performance from the outside hitting spot, as they each swung over .333.

Warren started UNM off in the right direction against Nevada with her offensive performance, collecting 10 of her 15 kills in the first two sets alone. Warren helped propel UNM to a 2-0 start to the game.

The scorching start hit a bit of

a lull in the third set after Nevada found its offensive voice, hitting a remarkable .364 on the back of sophomore outside hitter Madison Foley.

Foley collected six kills in the third set, and finished with a teamhigh 17 kills on the night. Nelson said the Lobos were able to slow her down a bit after the defense keyed in on her. However, Nevada’s outside hitter continued to swing even with the attention of the Lobo defense, as she swung 52 times.

Foley’s 17 kills tied Sours for the most kills in the contest. Sours’ presence was felt throughout the entirety of the match. Through the first two games, Sours’ right arm was hitting a sound .700 from the field. Although that number tapered off, she would finish the day with a .394 hitting percentage.

The Lobos desperately needed some sort of consistent play amidst the team’s libero struggles, and both Sours and Warren realized their lackluster play would not be enough for the Lobos to win ball games.

“We put our heads together and just focused,” Sours said. “We realized our team needed us a whole lot more than we’ve been

giving, and we fixed it.”

Sours and Warren provided the spark, and the rest of the offense followed. New Mexico hit .354 in the match, following UNM’s collective .035 hitting performance against SDSU on Thursday.

Nelson has been saying all season that the conference is a wide-open race. The head coach said again on Saturday that if the Lobos want a shot

at the conference title, they have to come into each match ready to play.

“If you don’t show up ready to play, you’ll be in trouble,” Nelson said. “Today we showed up ready and really took care of business.”
