By Megan Nyce @Megznham There are choices for the highest position of power in the country other than Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton — and Libertarian Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson visited UNM to make that clear.

Johnson, also a former twoterm New Mexico governor, hosted a campaign rally at the SUB Saturday afternoon, where he urged attendees and potential voters to consider his leadership when the polls open Nov. 8.

Johnson, who is polling higher in his home state than anywhere else, was accompanied

by Michael Aguilar, the chairman of the New Mexico Federation of College Republicans, and his

daughter, Seah Johnson, who spoke at the rally.

All speakers expressed disappointment in the major party nominees, and stressed that there are other options beyond Democrats and Republicans.

“I am extremely disappointed in our Republican nominee for president,” Aguilar said. “Donald Trump continues to disrespect women, the military, veterans, minorities across our nation and anyone else who does not agree with his authoritarian agenda.”

Aguilar reminded the crowd that Johnson is polling at an incredible 24 percent in the state.

“He is breaking down walls and he is within striking distance of the two-party machine,” he said. “Gary Johnson can win New Mexico.”

Mexico voters have a chance to take the decision of who becomes president to the House of Representatives.

If none of the candidates are successful in reaching the necessary 270 vote threshold from the Electoral College, the vote goes to the Republican-controlled House.

“And there is no way that they are going to vote for Clinton,” Seah said. “Us New Mexicans have a rare opportunity to make a difference — we can decide the next president of the United States.”

Introduced by his daughter, Gary Johnson then took the stage, the crowd roaring and chanting his name.

With a disclaimer that silenced the crowd, Johnson made it apparent where he stood with the Republican and Democratic candidates running

for presidency.

“I agree 100 percent with Hillary Clinton’s number one issue in this campaign, and I agree 100 percent with Donald Trump’s number one issue in this campaign: don’t vote for Clinton and don’t vote for Trump,” he said. “These are not the only two choices. There is a third choice, it’s a principled choice and it will make a difference, a positive difference for America.”

Johnson indicated that his running mate, fellow libertarian Bill Weld, and himself would provide integrity and honesty, which he claimed Trump and Clinton both lacked.

“If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything,” he said. “The one unforgivable in life is hypocrisy, saying one thing and doing another. Myself and

Bill Weld are not hypocrites.”

Citing various platform points — including wasteful spending and immigration — Johnson promised to have a solution for each.

Johnson claimed that when he was governor, he would meet with anyone after 4 p.m. on every third Thursday of the month until 10 p.m., to discuss issues and concerns that people had, a policy he called “open door after four.”

“I am pledging also an ‘open door after four’ as president of the United States,” he said.

In closing, Johnson reminded the crowd that there is still an opportunity to win the election.

“It is a matter of going out and soliciting your friends, family, coworkers and making a push over these last 30 days,” he said.

The Lion King sure to please fans of all ages

Not much else embodies the nostalgia of childhood quite like Disney movies, and of those movies we all remember The Lion King.

The film was released in 1994 to rave reviews and nearly made $1 billion at the box office. The world went crazy for The Lion King, and for the musical numbers written by Elton John and Tim Rice.

In 1997, the Broadway musical version of The Lion King premiered, and since then it has become “the world’s No. 1 musical,” spawning productions on every continent. The production is currently touring the U.S. and has found itself once again at Albuquerque’s Popejoy Theater.

Being the first time I have seen this production, I wasn’t sure what

to expect, but I was quickly enthralled by the performance.

The opening number — “Nants Ingonyama” — sung by the character Rafiki portrayed by actor Buyi Zama immediately won the hearts of the audience, letting them know this was the Lion King they knew and loved.

The opening number was followed by the iconic ballad “The Circle of Life,” and the stage was filled by the ensemble singers and dancers in the abstract animal costumes that the musical is famous for.

Animals from cheetahs to elephants made their way to the stage, either entering from the wings or through the audience.

Africana Studies seeks department status

By Brendon Gray @notgraybrendon Since its founding nearly 50 years ago, faculty and staff in UNM’s Africana Studies program have wished for full department status. A pending expansion will be helpful, but there is still work to be done.

Robert Jefferson, director of Africana Studies, said the creation of a new, state-of-the-art facility, which began last month and is chalked to finish early next year, is a sign of growth and prosperity for the program.

“The construction of the research hall shows our capacity to grow as a program,” he said.

With the growth, Jefferson is hopeful Africana Studies will be transitioning to a departmental status, which was one of his initial goals as program director.

Becoming a department isn’t just a goal for Jefferson. Since its founding in 1969, Africana Studies has been striving to achieve department status, as outlined by the original program proposal.

“The Black Studies program is to become a degree-granting program within the University as a permanent autonomous department within one of the existing colleges,” states the original program proposal, written by Barbara Brown-Simmons in 1969.

Some believe the research hall, which will overlook campus from the fourth floor of Mesa Vista Hall, still falls short of long-held goals.

“The lack of progress toward becoming a department is astounding,” said Jamal Martin, a faculty member in Africana Studies.

Some students in the program are equally frustrated that more hasn’t been done to achieve department status in

the almost half-century that it has been in existence.

“We’ve been asking the same question for years now,” said Nakia Russ, junior psychology and Africana Studies double major. “Why aren’t we a department? Why isn’t Africana Studies a department?”

Russ said she feels the absence of an Africana Studies department makes it more likely for others to gloss over her major in the program, rendering a portion of her academic resume obsolete.

One step toward transitioning to departmental status was taken in 2015, when Jefferson and a cohort of colleagues conducted a selfstudy of the program.

In the study, a plan was outlined to hire more faculty over the next four years. Along with new hiring, the review outlined goals to expand the classes available both traditionally and online, Jefferson said.

Campus and community

outreach were also top priorities in the strategic plan, he said.

Martin said he believes connecting the community with the research and work Africana Studies does will give rise to more support and enrollment, as well as, at the most foundational of levels, increasing student interest in the program, which will go a long way towards determining its long-term future.

Martin also noted the importance of Africana Studies not only at UNM, but for a state which prides itself on diversity and a variety of cultures.

“This is a program that can help inform policymakers about the needs and wants of African American people,” he said.

Jefferson emphasized how crucial the program is in supporting African American students not only on campus, but in the local community and nationwide.

“The fate of the program is inextricably related to what’s happening to African American students on campus,” he said.

Russ said seeing Africana Studies become a department is her dream.

To accomplish her goal, Russ wants to garner community support and start influencing change.

“I would love to say we did this, that we got the community involved and the support we needed to become a department,” she said.

Martin believes change will start with students, not faculty or administration.

“If it weren’t for students, a program like this wouldn’t exist,” he said. “Change comes when people who seemingly don’t have power work to change.”

Tailgating, a teenage wasteland

By Sara MacNeil @sara_macneil Tailgating might be the most dangerous activity at a Lobo football game.

Students showed up to party before Friday’s football game versus Boise State as early as 4 p.m.

A condensed crowd of students, dressed in red, bobbed up and down to house music at sunset, while paramedics stood by to respond to potential alcohol poisoning or dehydration.

As students played drinking games, drank Bud Light out of foam-covered cans and cheered each other on while downing beer bong funnels, police stood on the sidelines to monitor the activity.

One female student was so intoxicated she appeared to be passing out, while a male tried to convince her to go home with

him and, as her friend attempted to convince the overly-intoxicated woman to leave, others notified security.

Buckets and cases of alcohol littered the premises, and just who cleans the area when students are finished partying on the field before the football game starts has not yet been confirmed by the Daily Lobo.

Some might describe it as a wasteland of the college aesthetic, some might call it the way to take the edge off after another week of school, some both. However participants and observers view the scene, it is a typical one — at this point, participants in tailgating culture at large universities like UNM know exactly what to expect.

Michael Haggerty, assistant athletic director of events, said many people who attend student tailgates never make it inside University Stadium to the game.

“Many students just come to

party,” he said. “We don’t want that. We need students to support the team.”

UNMPD Lieutenant Timothy Stump said, as far as safety is concerned, multiple police jurisdictions work Lobo games, including the Bernalillo County Sheriff ’s Department, UNMPD and Rio Rancho police.

Paramedics are on site to respond to overly-intoxicated individuals, he said. Underage students caught drinking are reported to University administration, and are sometimes given a Minor in Possession charge.

Haggerty said undercover officers also attend tailgate parties, and a police force called the Special Investigations Unit issues MIP tickets to underage drinkers.

The SIU is a law enforcement unit of the Department of Public Safety.

SIU officers have statewide jurisdiction for various functions, including underage enforcement operations

and undercover operations.

There were six MIP’s issued at last week’s game, Haggerty said.

In past years, a wristband policy has been used, but the policy caused long lines and people simply avoided the security measure by partying at a different lot, he said.

There were also “a couple of fights” at this season’s first game, Haggerty said.

“When you add alcohol to the mix, things can escalate,” he said.

Cian Nudi, a senior psychology and sociology double major, said he went to the party but didn’t go to the game because he doesn’t “have much faith in the Lobos,” who lost 49-21 to Boise State on Friday night.

Nudi walked to the student tailgate before the game with his roommates, as they live close to the stadium and all wanted to avoid drinking and driving.

It was odd being at the party as a senior, he said.

Even students from different states, like South Dakota, were present at the rally to support Johnson.

Cole Steffen and Ezra Grothe, sophomores from South Dakota’s

School of Mines and Technology, explained the spontaneous decision to participate in Saturday’s rally.

Grothe said it is clear that Johnson is a candidate who sees the importance of the generation that is made up primarily of young, first-time voters.

“The views of the students

today are the views of the adult voting public tomorrow, so there lies the fact that we are the future,” Steffen said.

Gorley said he felt it was important to let students know that there is a third option.

“You don’t have to vote for the lesser of two evils,” she said. “Vote for

Nudi said he witnessed a fight break out at the party, and said one man involved was taken into custody after the incident.

“I never see police intervene until after the fight is already over,” he said.

Nudi said he would be embarrassed and worried for his professional future if he were to be caught in a photograph at one of these parties.

“I just think about my future, if I were to be caught in a picture at a stupid, big party where people are drunk all over the place and girls are twerking,” he said. “I’m too old for this.”

Critics should know the limits of their reviews

By Skylar Griego @TDLBooks In the world of journalism, the most important thing every reporter strives for revolves around one word: ethics. No selfrespecting journalist has made a career without having a code of ethics drilled into his or her brain (as it should be).

But journalism, like any kind of writing, is varied and full of subgenres. Following strict rules can get trickier the more alternative the writing becomes.

For instance, investigative reporters know to remain objective, but what about critics who write reviews where the point is to give an opinion? What ethical standards, aside from the obvious, apply to them?

Recently this critic learned a very important one: only review what you know.

That doesn’t mean don’t try new things or be

redundant. It means don’t review something you have no authority on.

Most people have enough knowledge about what makes things like movies, music, plays and books good or bad. You can break down a movie or a play into components like plot, acting talent and other aspects that determine the overall quality.

Other forms of art, however, can be far more difficult and specialized.

On Thursday night this critic attended “Dream Boxes,” a production I thought was going to be a play – but turned out to be some kind of interpretive dance performance – I think. The program only says the story is told through pure movement, so if that’s not interpretive dance I sincerely apologize for my ignorance.

With all due respect to the arts, certain performing arts are just lost on me. What are you supposed to do with something as abstract as interpretive dance? How do you determine the quality of performers moving

purposefully across the stage to tell a story – especially if you’re not getting the story?

“Dream Boxes” consists of two performances inspired by classic texts: “My Father’s House,” based on “Oresteia” by Aeschylus and the “Iphigenia” cycle by Euripides, and “The Forest, the Desert,” a narrative based on Dante’s “Inferno” and Chief Joseph’s surrender.

Perhaps it was a lack of familiarity with the works this production is based on, but I never had any idea what was going on with the story. I spent the entire first performance trying to figure out which performers represented each character as they danced, jumped and screamed across the stage in various costumes.

“The Forest, the Desert” was even more befuddling. There were actors sticking their faces in buckets of water, torn pillows blowing feathers everywhere and snippets of stories in various languages throughout the piece.

Not exactly what I’d call entertainment. But

what do I know?

After mulling over the performance, I realized there is no way I can write a review of this production because I have no idea what I’m talking about.

It would be unfair and unethical to write a negative review of a performance I did not enjoy when I simply lack the expertise to give a credible opinion.

So instead, I am just going to say I did not get it. If you are a fan of these classics or if you love contemporary performances that use movement, don’t let this column prevent you from checking out more experimental performances.

But if you’re a boring, literal person like this critic, you may want to reconsider attending productions of the avant-garde.

For the third time this season, mistakes in the 18-yard box haunted the UNM men’s soccer team.

The Lobos fell 2-1 to Charlotte on Saturday night after two firsthalf penalties by the 49ers.

This type of situation is nothing new for the Lobos, who dropped their first two matches of the 2016 fall season 1-0 due to penalty kicks.

With the loss, New Mexico is now 7-4 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA. Charlotte improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Prior to Saturday’s loss, the Lobos had not allowed opponents more than one goal in a single match this season.

“Pretty disappointing loss,” said head coach Jeremy Fishbein in a statement. “Gotta open well on the road. Something to learn from. I was happy with the guys’ reaction.”

by Charlotte’s Elliot Panicco.

Less than two minutes later, Marco Sunol-Rojas took a shot for the 49ers but Lobo goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu made the save.

In the 15th minute however, Beaulieu received a yellow card from a slide tackle, which gave Charlotte its first penalty kick of the night.

Senior midfielder Brandt Bronico scored from this opportunity. Bronico is a familiar face to the Lobos, as he scored a goal against them last year when Charlotte took a 2-0 victory.

The second penalty of the night came in the 35th minute.

Bronico once again took the shot, converting it into his third goal of the season.

The first period ended with the Lobos having a slight 4-3 edge in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

“Not a good first half,” Fishbein said. “Two PKs off mistakes, that was pretty disappointing. To the guys’ credit, we challenged them at halftime.”

The Lobos got on the scoreboard in the 56th minute when Hansen netted his ninth goal of the season thanks to a through ball by midfielder Devin Boyce.

Midfielder Chris Wehan was trying to convert from a free kick in the 76th minute, but Panicco stopped it from becoming the equalizer.

“We had a real good second half. Got an early one, made a couple pushes, but weren’t able to find the second,” Fishbein said.

The match ended with each side recording seven shots and New Mexico leading 6-4 in corner kicks. There was a total of five yellow cards, four of those belonging to the Lobos.

New Mexico will be back on the East Coast next week when they play the Florida Atlantic University Owls on Saturday.

Lobos improve, but not enough to take the win

New Mexico’s goal of winning a division title took a serious hit Friday night, as the Lobos lost its first conference game after getting dominated 49-21 by No. 19 Boise State.

The Lobos looked like they might be able to hang around early in the game, playing to a 7-7 tie after the first couple of series, but then Boise State started to assert itself.

Both teams were somewhat one-dimensional, but the Broncos could not be stopped in the passing game, while the Lobos were never able to challenge despite strong numbers in the run game.

New Mexico played the game without Teriyon Gipson, who suffered a hamstring injury in last week’s 48-41 victory over San José State. Davie said the running back wanted to go, but the team decided to play it safe.

The Lobos seemed to miss Gipson’s big play ability as well as his over 12-yards-per-carry average.

Prior to the game, head coach Bob Davie said if the team got into a situation where it had to throw the ball out of necessity rather than choice, it would not bode well.

Boise State scored seven consecutive touchdowns, torching the Lobo secondary with big pass after big pass. New Mexico was unable to keep pace, and the game quickly got out of hand.

The Lobos trailed 42-7 at the half, and finally put up two late scores to stop the onslaught.

Davie said he was proud of his team for continuing to fight. He said it’s not easy to come back out after a first half like that, but for what it was worth he was glad to see the team outscore Boise State in the second half.

Quarterback Lamar Jordan had a tough day and was under duress for much of the game. Boise State applied constant pressure and appeared to rattle the quarterback and force some bad decisions.

“I was just rushing a lot of things,” Jordan said. “Just not playing my game, you know, trying to

which made use of Popejoy’s space by breaking the wall between the performers and the audience. The thing to remember about this production is that it’s not merely a performance, but an experience where those attending are able to feel like they’re a part of the story.

When it comes to the acting, some might criticize the performance as being “cartoon-y,” but the actors are portraying cartoon animals in an adaptation of an animated movie. While some scenes are over-acted, one has to realize that this is a performance for all ages.

If the actors didn’t perform hyperbolically in some scenes, it could’ve alienated the younger audience members. It was hyperbole with the intention of inclusion, and, honestly, without it, the production wouldn’t have been as

much fun.

Mark Campbell, who played the villainous uncle Scar, embodies the character perfectly, capturing the lion’s Machiavellian personality and unstable nature.

Jeremy Irons himself couldn’t have done a better job.

Buyi Zama’s portrayal of Rafiki differed from the character in the film, but I felt her portrayal gave a more genuine aspect to the character as the goofy shaman of the Pride Lands. She was able to make the audience suspend disbelief.

Despite breaking the fourth wall at many points, Zama didn’t make the occurrences seem like the trite stylistic move that it usually is.

In terms of production value, The Lion King was top notch.

The company made perfect use of Popejoy’s smaller stage, creating depth in what would have

otherwise been a shallow set. The use of other mediums added a certain wonder to interludes, such as the use of Egyptian shadow puppets for Mufasa and Simba for their walk in the Pride Lands.

The Lion King lived up to its reputation as one of the best stage productions in history. The actors captured the characters perfectly and had amazing chemistry.

The use of the aisles, audience interaction, quality production, and talented actors added up to a powerful performance that will live in the hearts of audience members.

The Lion King is playing at Popejoy until Oct. 30.

While the offense showed improvement in its ability to sustain drives, the defense did not take advantage of the help.

Isaiah “I.B.” Brown suffered an apparent leg injury early in the game, and a thin secondary continued to let Bronco receivers Cedrick Wilson and Thomas Sperbeck run wild. Both of them had touchdown grabs of over 50 yards.

Wilson and Sperbeck receivers caught nine balls, with Wilson picking up 167 yards and three touchdowns and Sperbeck finding the end zone twice on 198 yards receiving.

New Mexico’s JaJuan Lawson notched his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter, while Richard McQuarley had a season-high four-game touchdown streak come to an end.

After keeping penalties to a minimum, the Lobos have seen

the flags increase the last couple of weeks. The team committed a season high 12 penalties for 88 yards against Boise State.

Davie said the penalties are a major concern for the team, especially the defensive ones. The issue should be easily correctable and he said he hopes they will be able to execute better next week.

The head coach said the team hopes to have Gipson and cornerback Jadon Boatright back in the lineup when it faces Air Force Saturday in Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Austin Apodaca is also trending toward being available as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury he suffered several weeks ago.

Davie said the team wasn’t able to protect Jordan and the inability to pass the ball took away the threat of play action. He said Jordan fought hard throughout the game.

Many of Jordan’s mistakes did not necessarily hurt the team.

An illegal forward pass by the QB negated a play that was ruled a fumble, and an interception at the end of the half proved to be relatively harmless.

While Jordan did go for over 100 yards rushing on the game, he completed only four passes for 39 yards. He missed a couple of wide open looks early on that could have kept the team in striking distance.

The Lobo offense covered 382 yards rushing in the game, and did arguably its best job of the season in terms of controlling field position. The team only had two 3-andouts and picked up 23 first downs, converting nine times on third and
